Approval

Talk About It!

(The Most Dangerous Strongholds Come in Disguise)

Use thes questions in your community group this week to get things started.

A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR

• God’s opinion should matter more to us as believers than anything else. Yet His approval is not something we need to earn. How do you resolve these two contradictory thoughts?

(Read about Northland’s senior pastor, Dr. Hunter, and his life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter.) SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

QUOTE:

Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

“Whatever our position in life, if our lives and works are to be of the kingdom of God, we must not have human approval as a primary or even major aim. We must lovingly allow people to think whatever they will. We may, if it seems right, occasionally try to help them understand us and appreciate what we are doing. That could be an act of love. But in any case we can only serve them by serving the Lord only.” —Excerpt from The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God, by Dallas Willard

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” WORSHIP FOCUS:

Worship God today as the Father from whom the whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. We are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, baptized into Christ and clothed with Christ. We all have the same standing in Christ Jesus, as heirs according to the promise. (Ephesians 3:14-17; Galatians 3:26-29)

• How would you assess whether or not this is a stronghold in your life? • What are the telltale markers that your emotional state is based on someone’s reaction to you? • How would doing your good works in secret help you to seek God’s approval first?

NOTES:

Think About It! All of us, to some extent, want the approval of others. At what point do we lose perspective and put the opinion of others first?

orthland is excited to welcome the 2011 summer interns! Twenty-one students representing 10 colleges and universities have joined us to serve in the areas of Worship, Student Ministries, Pastoral Care, Media Design and Children’s Ministries. Many of the students listed here are participating in the True North Internship, a short-term program designed to “train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work” (Ephesians 4:12, The Message). Northland is privileged to host such an amazing and diverse group of individuals.

Lessons Learned School provides opportunities for children in Namibia Nan Parker is a Northland missionary serving in Namibia. In the following article, she tells how God used a shortterm trip to give her a long-term vision of using her gifts and experience in education in ministry to orphans and vulnerable children.

By Nan C. Parker

A

s Christians, many of us have times in our faith walk when the Lord calls us to follow a path that will change our lives forever. My journey to full-time ministry in Namibia began nine years ago. The mission trip many of us joined we hoped would “transform a nation.” We found out several years later that we had a dramatic impact on the youths to whom we taught an abstinence curriculum based on Christian values. Statistics proved that the group of young people we targeted was the only age group that showed a decrease in the HIV/AIDS infection rate five years later. Each summer I returned with teams from Northland to continue the work we had started in Namibia. When I retired from Seminole County Public Schools in 2005, I was looking forward to a future of relaxation away from the stresses and demands that had consumed my life. The Lord must have been chuckling as I began my retirement because within a year, He had firmly planted me in Namibia. All my knowledge and training in America would be put to use to help orphans and vulnerable children in Namibia. He called me to 10 years of service with a ministry that then was called Hope’s Promise Orphan Ministries Namibia, which supports the foster families that care for abandoned and orphaned children. Like it has many other sub-Saharan African countries, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has crippled the entire nation. Of the 2 million people in Namibia, 50 percent are children under age 14. Namibia struggles to educate its children. Elementary school classes are huge by American standards. The typical class has 36 children, and most classes are larger. It became obvious that if HPOMN was going to impact the lives of the

children under its care, a special school was needed. The vision for Talitha Kumi Christian Academy (TKCA), a Christian school with small classes that could meet the children’s educational needs, was cast. A school where orphans and vulnerable children from all over Namibia could receive a high-quality education was founded. The classes would never be more than 22 children, and community children would be included so the ministry children would not be isolated. TKCA Primary School started in 2007 in a small mining town, Arandis. Once the Lord called me to TKCA, He provided a home for me and a building for the school. The school began with grades one and three and eight children. The school has served many children in the ministry and the community, but we have struggled. It was only this February that we received official recognition from the Namibian Ministry of Education and became a fully registered private school. We are now approved to operate as a lower and upper primary school with grades one through seven! In addition to my position with TKCA, in 2008, the Lord fulfilled my lifelong dream of being a mom when Thuialeni Elizabeth Dax was placed in my permanent foster care. I have experienced firsthand the struggles foster families face as they provide homes for children who come out of orphanages, off the streets or from farms. At ten years old, Elizabeth had not completed a full year of school. She is handicapped, was born with spina bifida and is paralyzed from the waist down. She is incontinent, so she was shunned at school and in the orphanage. Elizabeth’s situation, while extreme, was not far from the scenario we often see: bright, capable children who are way behind in school. Some children have not attended school due to a lack of care or physical and intellectual handicaps. There is little or no accommodation for these children in the public schools. It has been one of my greatest blessings to see Elizabeth flourish in my home and at TKCA. She is now in fourth grade and doing very well academically. The beautiful love and intelligence that the Lord placed in her has blossomed. I hope to adopt Elizabeth in the near future. To continue, TKCA desperately needs volunteer teachers. We hire Namibian teachers, but the majority of them are not fluent in English and have not had the training to meet our children’s needs. We need teachers who can come alongside these teachers for six months to a year. The cost of room and board here is provided, but individuals will pay their plane fare and personal expenses. If you are a certified teacher, please prayerfully consider hearing the call and joining us! In all ministries, God prepares partners who will go, pray, and support financially. Northland has been involved in Namibia for more than a decade. I give thanks for how God has used Northland and for how He will use the members in the future. When you hear God’s call to teach in Namibia, contact me at nancparker@msn.com. We need teachers for the 2012 school year, January to November, in grades one through six. This letter is written with love. I am reminded daily that this journey called life is not about me, but about Him. May the God of all creation continue to bless Northland as the community of faith continues to serve Him.

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Vision Statement

To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

Mission Statement

To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

What is a “church distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities. If you wish to learn more about the church distributed, you may purchase the book Church Distributed, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, at the Northland Bookstore or Amazon.com. All proceeds go to Northland.

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

northlandchurch.net

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

WE’RE MAKING THE SWITCH!

S U N DA Y S

Beginning August 7, the Sunday evening worship service time is moving to 5 p.m. (EDT)! Why? First, this gives Sunday evening congregants more time to connect with one another after the service. Secondly, for families with children, Sunday is a school night, and an earlier service time will make it possible for them to join on Sunday evenings. Finally, since our Sunday morning services are bursting at the seams (praise God!), we thought this change might alleviate overcrowded classrooms in Children’s Church by making it possible for more folks to worship Sunday evenings where there is still plenty of space.
