The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. What if I ...

let someone else win? stopped trying to come out on top? didn’t take advantage of someone who is weaker than I? redefined my idea of success? stopped comparing myself to others? stopped competing and started helping? said, “I’m sorry.” worked hard to make someone else successful?

When we compete with others, we have a tendency to de-humanize our opposition. They cease being people we love or people we respect. Instead, they become a kind of enemy to our need to win. So we do what it takes for us to come out on top and also to stop them from winning. It’s either me or you. We forget that when we win, someone else loses.

What we need is a change of mind-set. We need the mind of Christ in order to make the decisions of Christ. We are talking about a personal choice that will have repercussions for every relationship we have or will have. Every single person I encounter will be affected one way or another by my choice to protect my pride or lay it down, to fight to come out on top or to just stop competing, to do whatever it takes to succeed or to work hard to make someone else successful. Because of the personal choice of God Himself to lay aside His rightful throne, humble Himself, and come to earth as a lowly human and die on a cross, He made it possible for us to make the choice not to harden our hearts toward other people. Without Him our hearts grow hard and we fight for our own agenda and our own success. With Him we can choose humility.

Strong Medicine O

n a scorching Tuesday morning, dozens of people are lined up at Harvest Time International in Sanford to shop at the ministry’s food pantry, which looks and operates more like a grocery store.

Northlander Kim Mosley makes her way through the crowd, greeting people by name as she passes by. She touches the shoulder of one young woman, smiles and enters through a back door.

“My 17-year-old son likes this song by a Christian rapper named Lecrae that I like to quote. He says, ‘I can play the background ... and You [God] can take the lead.’ That’s my motto,” she says.

About a year ago, Kim was “floundering,” as she puts it. A mother of five and co-owner with her husband of a successful property management business, she had recently moved to Lake Mary. Having left behind her friends, church family and everything that she knew, Kim was “very sad, depressed. But I’ve always told my children if you’re bored, then you’re being selfish. There’s always someone in need!”

So Kim started praying and looking for open doors to serve others. She signed up and helped during one of Northland’s Local Serve Days, and it was there that she learned about Harvest Time.

One of Northland’s partner ministries, Harvest Time works both locally and globally, and assists more than 500 families in Central Florida with food, household goods and more, while helping them move toward self-sufficiency.

“I stopped by Harvest Time for a tour, and I knew right there that I had found where God wanted me,” Kim recalls.

She started out by stocking shelves in the store and eventually was asked to help out around the office. Putting her experience in the business world to work, she quickly made a name for

Soon, Andre Smolinsky, Harvest Time’s chief operating officer, asked Kim to take a big step of faith by helping to organize a free medical clinic at the ministry.

“I had no background in this, but I was willing to do what I could with what I had,” Kim notes. “So I trusted God and jumped in with both feet. It’s a miracle how He has brought us to this point.”

On August 19, the Harvest Time Medical Care Center will hold a grand opening for the public that will include free resources, kids entertainment and more. The clinic will start seeing patients this fall, when qualifying families will be seen by volunteer doctors and nurses in one of five brand-new examination rooms, and basic medical care will be provided for uninsured individuals with an income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Currently, the clinic has only enough volunteers to open one or two days per week, serving between 20 and 30 people per day. “We know that we’re going to have to turn folks away, and that breaks our hearts,” Kim says.

“We need many more volunteer doctors, nurses and administrative volunteers so we can expand the program and help more people.”

Kim is reminded of one more quote, this time from theologian Henry Blackaby: Find where God is at work, and join Him. She concludes, “I know there are so many more people in the medical field who want to be where God is working. He is working here.”

Serve GLOBaLly Celebrating Recovery in Scotland

C

elebrate Recovery at Northland is approaching two years of ministry. We started it in November 2009 with the hopes of providing a safe place where people getting out of jail could go to meet with others and find hope and recovery from life’s hurts, hangups and habits. Celebrate Recovery at Northland has grown to minister weekly to more than 125 adults and 20 children from all walks of life, including members of our congregation.

This year Celebrate Recovery was invited to send its first Distributed Journey team to Fraserburgh, Scotland.

Six men and six women worked for 12 days with an addiction ministry. Since Northland first sent a team in 1999, Sunnybrae, a men’s drug rehab center, has been established.

Two years ago, Benaiah, a women’s rehab facility, opened. Teen Challenge Scotland is operating both.

The men were housed at the Sunnybrae rehab facility, and the women Everyone felt welcomed. went to Benaiah. Our team consisted of leaders and participants from Northland’s Celebrate Recovery, a Celebrate Recovery group from New Smyrna Beach and local AA leaders. This was the first mission trip for many on the team.

We arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, after a seven-hour plane trip from Philadelphia and then began a four-hour drive across the breathtaking Scottish countryside to the northeastern tip of Scotland. When we arrived at Sunnybrae to drop off our men’s team, there was a wonderful welcome awaiting us by the staff and residents. The women’s team then traveled a bit farther to Benaiah. After both groups were settled in their respective locations, we began our message of help and healing from life’s hurts, hang-ups and habits.

Our teams began to lead the worship each day during daily chapel time. We were then given the regularly scheduled classroom time to teach Celebrate Recovery Teen Challenge bus. lessons. We modeled

small sharing groups and explained how and why they are vital in keeping us strong in our recovery. Small sharing groups, or support groups, are where we can help others find the recovery we now enjoy through Christ. It appears this is what may be lacking in the region. Many are getting out of the rehabs just to go back to the same people, places and things that rapidly result in relapse. Encouraging the residents of the rehabs to start their own support groups when they get out became our number one priority.

Another aspect of Sunnybrae and Benaiah that new residents find hard to adjust to is the discipline of work. This is new to many of them, while for others, it is something they have given up due to their lifestyle while living their addiction. However, the ability to work and keep a job is an essential part of everyday life. While in recovery, they focus daily on learning life and job skills and adjusting to daily work schedules. Our men’s team was able to work with the Sunnybrae residents in their lawn maintenance business.

We also joined Sunnybrae in their bus outreach.

The bus goes out to the villages of Banff, Buckie and Peterhead. The bus is staffed with Teen Challenge workers who are able to offer advice, counsel and support to people from all walks of life, especially those who in some way are experiencing substance abuse. We, along with the bus workers, made contact with substance abusers who were seeking a way out of their current bondage of abuse. We prayed silently, and we prayed aloud. We touched lives and were touched by lives.

The people of Scotland are so warm and welcoming and fed us so fabulously!

We had “Scottish Night” in each of the centers. We were served classic Scottish dishes: mince and tatties, neeps and haggis! The women learned a few Scottish dances and were entertained by the Canadian national champion for Scottish Highland dancing. The men at Sunnybrae had their own Scottish Highland Games with the caber toss, hammer throw and tug of war. They didn’t fare too well in Scottish football (soccer).

As we finished up our week of ministry and teaching, we had the opportunity to experience a real version of the Highland Games. We also visited Pennan, a beautiful seaside village. And what would visiting Scotland be without visiting a castle? So we toured Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire.

Returning to Scotland, I renewed many friendships I had made over the years. I ran into some of the same substance abusers whom I had ministered to on past trips.

Some had found recovery, but many returned to streets and their lives of bondage to drugs. Recovery groups are few and far between or, in most cases, nonexistent. It is our hope and prayer that Celebrate Recovery will be launched in Scotland. Since returning home, we have been asked to come back next year, and they are sending a team to

Northland to experience our Celebrate Recovery in the hopes of duplicating it in Scotland.

Our team members were impacted greatly by this experience. We will never be the same again. We bonded with one another and with the substance abusers of Scotland. We know that we can’t keep it if we don’t give it away.

Our prayer is that those attending the two Teen Challenge programs, Sunnybrae and Benaiah, as well as others who are seeking recovery would have a place to go when they complete their program, as after care is vital in keeping sobriety. Again, that appears to be the greatest need. Please join us in continuing to pray for these two facilities, that they can expand and provide support for more men and women who are desperately seeking recovery from the enslavement of addiction. And consider joining our team for next year’s Distributed Journey!

n July 16, Northland held the third Local Serve Day of the year. It was our largest Serve Day yet, with more than 500 volunteers signed up to serve at six different projects across Central Florida! Northlanders packed lunches, cleaned up parks and waterways, provided people with an opportunity to learn about creation care through gardening, and helped local partner organizations meet the needs of others by serving in their pantries and warehouses.

We started the morning with some uplifting music with our worship team and a great devotional by Pastor Leon from our partner church in South Africa. Meanwhile, friends and families had a chance to catch up and enjoy one another’s company over breakfast, provided by our Disaster Relief Kitchen Team. It was great to see so many coming together in community with the sole purpose of serving locally and worshiping God with our willingness to serve those around us!

In addition to the projects going on in Orlando, the home church from Ponce Inlet decided to join in on the fun. On July 16, Mary Teasley and her home church

group organized their own Local Serve Day. They met for breakfast and worship, and then headed out into their local community to serve.

By working with a local church counseling facility where Mary volunteers regularly, the group from Ponce Inlet was able to identify a local family of seven in need. Those in the home church spent their morning serving and building relationships with the family, and were able to provide the family with much-needed school supplies and food. The Ponce Inlet home church is an awesome example of what it means to be a church distributed!

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.

LIFEHOPE Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Northland’s Student Ministries and Care Center. LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen to, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you.
