Faith and Finance Allies There is a 10-week personal finance class designed for the financially vulnerable in our community. We are looking for mentors (allies) to walk alongside the participants in our class. As an ally, you would attend class with the participants and serve as an encourager and partner along their journey.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

he true believer is a tree planted by the water who grows strong and produces much fruit. The tree gives freely of its fruit, yet produces even more. It prospers in and out of season and takes greater root in Me. All appreciate the fruit and the shade and the consistency of the tree; it is a fixture upon which others depend. The fruit of the godly brings life, and those who bring the Good News to others are wise and shall prosper. Such a tree thrives and will be pruned to produce even more fruit. It will stand forever.

Do not, therefore, be ashamed to grow in Me and to produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Do not deny the truth and the claims of the gospel, but grow strong in them, and proclaim them.

Be the landmark tree that produces fruit for your entire community. You have been given great grace to have your root and foundation in Me, and your every word and action are to give testimony of Me, for I have saved you and called you unto a life of integrity and productivity. You are here for My purposes, and you thrive because of My grace. Do not be ashamed to grow and to be the follower I have called you to be. Doing so will draw men unto Me. I am your Sunshine and your very Sustenance, and you must continue growing in Me through discipleship, through dedication to Me and My ways, through conformity with Me. Learn to love My correction, shaping, pruning, and perfecting. Grow stronger in the grace that I am, and always count the cost of surrender and obedience to Me. Grow without fear, for I am all you need, and you will have My love and My infinite power and My very mind. No matter how threatening the storms, stay rooted in Me, and you will remain productive until the day of the Lord.

God’s Light Shines Even in Gloomy Circumstances in Swaziland

W

hen someone says “Africa,” an image may come to mind that is similar to the image that would come to mind with any number of people from your context. That image might include stick-thin, darkskinned children with big, hungry eyes. You might see dusty brown safaris on which exotic animals roam, or perhaps the image includes a litter-strewn, run-down city street.

Recently, I had the privilege of joining a team with 18 other people on a Distributed Journey to Swaziland. I could present many images to represent the surface-level Swaziland I saw: little children in tattered school uniforms, scrawny goats running down a dusty road, faded laundry hanging on lines beside small wooden houses. Almost everywhere that we ventured, the poverty of this nation was evident. With at least a third of the population infected with AIDS, many children are left in vulnerable situations, with either one parent or neither to care for them. Lack of employment opportunities and social stigmas also contribute to the hardship many Swazis face.

Now that I’ve presented the surface-level images that were strikingly evident to me, I invite you to look deeper at some of the stories that changed my outlook on the country and its people. These stories taught me not to look at Swazis (and other Africans) merely as victims of poverty, stripping them of their dignity. Rather, I began to see people who have the right to feel joy in the midst of sorrow, have hope even in desperate situations, and be generous despite having nothing.

The generosity of the warmhearted Swazis was evident in both children and adults. I was very struck when one of my teammates shared that a student at the elementary school we worked at every day, Global Revival Primary School, had pulled out all the money he had in his pocket and tried to give it to her. The small offering of what would be just a few cents to us was an impactful gesture of the boy’s love because he was one of the school’s vulnerable children (from a home with one or no parents).

Because the school had so many children – 500 – we had been instructed not to individually give them food or money, or even empty promises to buy them much-needed provisions. Yet even after a week of having to refuse their requests for these things, this boy wanted to give us the very thing we had been “denying” him.

One of the most impactful experiences I had during our time in Swaziland was having the privilege of meeting six graduating high school seniors who had begun their education at Global. After finishing grade seven, they sought the assistance of some of the Northland team members in getting them into a local high school.

At that time, around 2010, it was nearly impossible for these kids to get into a high school because of the stigma of an orphan school attached to Global. Finally, one of the high schools allowed the students to attend, and in the last five years, they have excelled in their studies and leadership contributions to the school.

It’s a classic “defying all the odds” story that we so love to hear in America, yet these students did not tell us a story about themselves in which they were the heroes. Rather, when we asked them to tell us about how they persevered through the hardships of their childhoods to get to where

Today, Global Revival Primary School students study in improved conditions, compared with when the school began, in 2005. Then, hundreds of students were packed into a small wooden shack with a few benches to sit on, and rats and snakes living underneath the floor. Students today are divided by grade in several classrooms, with more classroom facilities being built.

The six high school students who will be graduating this year began high school with six other students. Most of them were girls who had to drop out of high school due to pregnancy. Of the six remaining students, only one is female. She wants to pursue a career in nursing, while some of the boys are interested in business and economics.

they are today, they talked about how thankful they were that God had blessed them with the opportunity to even go to school at all. They boldly said becoming “success stories” had nothing to do with their own strength, but it was by God’s grace. I was humbled by these students, who were so eager to learn and so thankful for the opportunity to do so.

After hearing their stories, I walked away with a transformed view of them. I no longer saw victims of poverty who had defied the odds; rather, I saw a group of students who were so incredibly blessed with the gift of education and are humble enough to credit God for it.

These are only two small glimpses deeper into the beauty of Swaziland’s people. After having spent only 10 days there, I feel as if I’ve merely scratched the surface of all there is to be learned about humility, generosity and faith from the people I encountered. My hope and prayer is that these words have whetted your appetite to learn more about the incredible things about God and His kingdom from people across the street and across the world!

This mother holds her seventh child. Her current husband is her second, and he has committed to try to help her provide for their children, but even buying school uniforms ($10 each) for the kids is a daunting obstacle. Education at Global is free, but this mother faces not knowing where their next meal is coming from, let alone how they will purchase the uniforms.

On Friday, Global Revival Primary School competed in a soccer and netball tournament against three other local primary schools. It was several years ago that Global’s male soccer team won the first-place trophy, which made this year’s win a huge celebration for the school!

CARE Center Welcomes Angela Davies

T

he CARE Center welcomes Angela Davies as the newest Northland staff member. Angela will provide leadership for the expanded collaboration among the church/ congregation, the local and global community, and government agencies. Angela is a catalyst for any recommended changes, implementation strategies and development plans resulting from the synthesis of the compassion and reconciliation ministries (LifeHope, the Prison and Jail Ministry, the homeless initiative, anti-human trafficking and so on) to the

vision of the distributed church.

This is important in the long-term success of Northland’s resourcing and partnership development with the community.

She will work closely with community leaders, establishing pathways for progress and long-term commitments to our community. Angela’s wealth of experience in juvenile justice, mental health counseling and local public schools will aid in her collaboration activities among the church, government, nonprofits and the community.

Angela is the eldest daughter of Northland Pastor Gus Davies and Jeneba, and has grown up in both Sierra Leone, West Africa, and Orlando. She has been part of the Northland family for 17 years. Angela has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of South Florida and a master’s in social work from the University of Central Florida.

In her spare time, Angela enjoys traveling and connecting with friends new and old. She is always discovering new dining experiences and activities in the Orlando area.

orthland is addressing homelessness in Seminole and Orange counties through a program called AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America), hosted by UCF’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Management.

Aaron and Alexis, our two Northland VISTAs, are making a yearlong, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at Northland. They will focus on building the organizational, administrative and financial capacity of Northland’s benevolence ministry, LifeHope. They will help implement and expand projects within the LifeHope ministry to better assist homeless and low-income individuals and families. We welcome them to our Northland family.

od has really been working at and through Northland over the past several months. We’ve seen His hand move us toward distributed churches, families living life together, focused on Jesus in such a way that their existence and interactions profess the gospel.

We also celebrated alongside our CARE Center as it launched 121Hope, Northland’s new anti-trafficking ministry.

Hundreds of you came out to learn how we can help men and women trapped in local slavery through partnerships and building community awareness.

And we’ve watched God grow and expand Access Ministries at Northland. We offer specialized classes, studies, retreats and service opportunities for children with special needs, and high school students and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as their families. It’s amazing to see this happen through our church family members (Us), each using their unique and God-given gifts and wiring (for) to make a difference in the lives of others (Them) in our church and community (There).

But what about doing something to benefit and grow ourselves (which still really benefits others in the end)?

This fall we’re launching Finding Financial Freedom, a “First Principles” study. We’ve partnered with Compass— Finances God’s Way to bring you a study that will transform not only your finances, but your life. When we view stewardship as the management of God’s resources

entrusted to us, our outlook on how we handle those resources changes and it becomes a part of our worship toward the Lord and outpouring of our heart to Him. Dr. Hunter’s “family moments” at the beginning of each service have been small reminders and teachings of what the Bible has to say about this subject. Finding Financial Freedom is the opportunity to expand, grow and more fully understand your role in the context of your family, your church and even your community. Further, it’s a step toward living a more generous life that not only benefits your family, but allows you to live generously for the benefit of others.

Why not journey through this study with other Northlanders near you? If you’re in a distributed church, we hope you will consider this study for your gatherings. If you’re looking to connect with a group to study, we can help! Proceeds benefit ConnectCity, one of the few residential communities in Central Florida serving women survivors of sex trafficking, sexual trauma and prostitution. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010).

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
