Worship Focus

THE BREAD OF HEAVEN

Worship Christ today as the living Bread. When we believe in Him, we have life in His name. Only He can satisfy the hunger of our souls.

John 6:26-69 (NASB)

Prayer

Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.” Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.”

These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble? What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”

As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”

We do not presume to come to Your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under Your table. But You are the same Lord whose property is to always have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of the body and blood of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to remember His sacrifice for our redemption. Keep us until the day when He returns. Amen.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

repositions can be very eloquent. A man is “in” architecture or a woman is “in” teaching, we say, meaning that is what they do weekdays and how they make enough money to enjoy themselves the rest of the time. But if we say they are “into” these things, that is another story. “Into” means something more like total immersion. They live and breathe what they do. They take it home with them nights. They can’t get enough of it. To be “into” books means that just the sight of a signed first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland sets your heart pounding.

To be “in” books means selling them at B. Dalton’s.

Along similar lines, New Testament Greek speaks of believing “into” rather than believing “in.” In English we can perhaps convey the distinction best by using either “in” or no preposition at all.

Believing in God is an intellectual position. It need have no more effect on your life than believing in Freud’s method of interpreting dreams or the theory that Sir Francis Bacon wrote Romeo and Juliet.

Believing God is something else again. It is less a position than a journey, less a realization than a relationship. It doesn’t leave you cold like believing the world is round. It stirs your blood like believing the world is a miracle. It affects who you are and what you do with your life like believing your house is on fire or somebody loves you.

We believe in God when for one reason or another we choose to do so.

We believe God when somehow we run into God in a way that by and large leaves us no choice to do otherwise.

When Jesus says that whoever believes “into” him shall never die, he does not mean that to be willing to sign your name to the Nicene Creed guarantees eternal life. Eternal life is not the result of believing in. It is the experience of believing.

God’s Working in Children’s Ministry in Uganda

G

od is doing great things in Uganda! Churches are being planted, leaders are being trained, and God’s Kingdom is growing by leaps and bounds – literally!

Children’s ministries are full of active learners who want to be challenged in their faith, and God has given Northland the opportunity to partner with Ugandan churches through our online children’s Bible curriculum, “The Worship, the Word and the Way.” A small team from Northland visited Kampala in March to train and equip children’s ministry leaders from 23 churches throughout Uganda. The team cast the vision for a vibrant children’s ministry that uses sound learning theory and developmental best practices to teach children who God is and what He has done. Through the generous hosting of Kampala’s Miracle Center Church, Ugandan children’s ministry leaders got a clear picture of how to take children through the entire Bible in a fun and interactive way, and then put into practice what they learned by teaching more than 80 children from a local Christian school and surrounding villages three lessons in the life of Moses over three afternoons in a camp format. On the final evening, parents and families came to hear the children perform memory verse songs they had learned and see the art they had created during the camp.

Please pray for the churches in Uganda, for the pastors and teachers who work faithfully as agents of the gospel, and for the Word of God to grow in the hearts and minds of the children in this region of the world.

How to Have a Conversation With Someone Asking for Help

I

f you’ve been coming to Northland lately, you’ve probably heard expressions such as “serving to empower” and “helping others in a way that preserves the dignity of both parties.” What does that mean, practically speaking? How can we serve others in a way that honors God, preserves the dignity of both parties and fosters both self-sufficiency and interdependence that is characteristic of authentic and healthy relationships?

One way is to respond with a hierarchy of questions.

First, appreciate the request. Then ask ...

1. “What are you going to do to help yourself?”

This starts the empowering process.

2. “What are the people in your life (family and friends) going to do to help you?”

This opens the door to speak about community.

3. “What can we do together to help you?”

This could be your opportunity to help that person see their worth—that dignity is a gift that is already theirs!

Follow up with questions such as, “What do people say you’re good at? What do you enjoy doing? What would you like to learn?”

4. “What can I do?”

Don’t be afraid to linger at the first and second questions.

God desires for us and the other person to feel the discomfort long enough for each of us to lean into Him more. Remember, God is the one who reconciles ... we are the ambassadors.

Also, remember there can be a temptation to value effectiveness (quick solutions). There isn’t a quick fix to any broken relationship or system.

The goal of human transformation toward empowerment is to discover true identity—we are made in God’s image and bear His gifts, talents and treasures— and vocation. In the end, “meaning” matters more than efficiency.

Join the Community Action Poverty Simulation

W

hat is the Poverty Simulation? It is a guided experience using a simulation tool designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive in today’s economy.

During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their selfsufficiency on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during

the simulation while interacting with various community resources portrayed by volunteers – often individuals who themselves lived in poverty.

Although it uses “play” money and other props, fictional scenarios and time limits, the Poverty Simulation is not a game. It is a simulation tool that enables participants to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting. Join in the Poverty Simulation on August 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in The Rink. Help Others ‘Take Northland With Them’!

“T

hank you for bringing the church into these rooms.” That’s a familiar saying at Northland, heard every week during worship ... but what does it mean?

It’s an acknowledgment of the people who gather from all around the world to worship God for who He is and what He has done. It represents the folks gathered in Longwood, our congregations in Oviedo and Mount Dora, individuals who join us online from their living rooms, and families who gather in one of our nine house churches each week. It also includes our brothers and sisters from the growing number of correctional institutions and transitional facilities we serve, and all the faithful volunteers who are passionate about bringing the gospel there. It’s a tangible example of the thousands of people from across the globe who call Northland their church home.

Most importantly, it illustrates the truth that church is who we are, not where we go. You don’t have to come to one of the five worship services at Longwood to be part of the Northland congregation. In fact, we are working to become even more distributed, and that’s why we need your help.

Northland is a diaspora, meaning we’re scattered in many places, a church distributed that’s made of disciples of Jesus near and far. How can we connect them all together? We’re working to help people stay connected to Northland or find Northland-like churches across the country. Moving to Indiana? Take Northland with you.

Going up north for the summer? Take Northland with you.

Going off to college? Take Northland with you!

Every week we receive the same question over and over. It goes something like this: “I’m moving to ..., and I want to know if Northland has a house church nearby, or can someone recommend a similar church to Northland?”

Of course we have partner churches around the United States, and we do have our existing online worshiping communities (house churches), but you can help us in one of three ways: • Online Worshiping Communities. Do you know a group of people who gather to worship online with us each week? We have nine identified house churches, but perhaps there are more. By identifying these groups, we can put them on our existing house church map, where others can find them. We also can come alongside to help connect them to Northland leaders and resources, and other network leaders who can encourage and support them, and we’ll mention them in worship to help them grow. • Northland-Comparable Churches.

We are always looking for existing churches that we can offer folks when they are looking for a church in a new area. Did you attend a church like Northland in a previous season of life?

Are you aware of churches in other places that you feel are like Northland?

• Distributed Churches. The future and current vision of Northland is to organize as a church of churches. More and more, the larger community of Northland also is comprised of smaller, distributed churches that network together with a common vision, mission and leadership. These distributed churches are part of Northland’s goal of planting 1 million churches. To accomplish a vision this big around the world, we must begin right here at home. You can have a role in this by starting a distributed church of your own.

In short, a distributed church is disciples of Jesus in community for the benefit of others where they are. Drilling it down even more, a distributed church is a group of people who are choosing to arrange their lives together around the gospel in such a way that their very existence, activities and

conversations proclaim the Good News of God. Connected to a network of churches and committed to the others, a distributed church is an extended family whose identity and arrangement centers on who God is, what He has done, and what He calls the church to be and do in this world. Our hope is that as we continue growing and multiplying distributed churches, you’ll feel the Lord calling you to take part.

Sunday, September 14, 1 p.m., fellowship hall. Make a difference in a girl’s life by joining Girls X-Cel, a girls mentoring program launching in the fall. We are looking for women and couples to mentor girls in middle school from single-parent families, enriching the quality of their lives. We are encouraging girls to participate and develop a meaningful relationship with their mentors. Mentoring in a faith-based ministry offers a framework of teaching, modeling values and educating on life skills to promote growth for both the mentor and the mentee. At the meeting, all mentors, mentees and families will receive information about the program, including the purpose, goals, rules and activities of the ministry. Community Action Poverty Simulation Friday, August 29, 9 a.m. to noon, The Rink, Student Ministries and Care Center.

This guided experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family while trying to survive. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the simulation while interacting with various community resources staffed by low-income volunteers. This event also empowers the volunteers by allowing them an opportunity to interact with leaders from their community. The cost: $10.

This is session 3 of the training to serve men and women in our congregation behind bars. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010).
