About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

MYTH

“Here is your Roku box and the necessary cables. Now, please sign here stating that you will never set foot on the Longwood campus again.”

“Remember, seven nights in a week equals seven chances to get together! Please add a distributed church to your weekly worship attendance, your small group and your other ministry activities.”

TRUTH

A distributed church does not replace a central worship gathering. These two are complementary. In fact, the richness of a central worship gathering increases as our points of connection increase with others. The weekly worship service becomes a celebration of what God is doing in our communities.

MYTH

Distributed churches are best formed in the midst of relationships you already have. It’s not about mashing you up with a group of strangers – or people who live near you but with whom you have nothing else in common! The point is to form the church in your context and in your relationships. While we all need to learn to be more vulnerable with one another, it doesn’t have to be forced in a weird and awkward way with people you don’t know. And when groups form with people who are getting to know one another, the distributed church moves at the speed of the relationships.

MYTH

“Good news! After posting your address and meeting time on the website, 30 new families have signed up to join you at your gathering this week. Let me know if you need more chairs.”

TRUTH

A distributed church expands through the network you already have. It expands by serving people within your circle of influence, not by randomly routing people to your home. That would be like inviting a bunch of strangers to your house at Thanksgiving without your permission. Rest assured, we won’t do that, because ultimately, the goal of distributing the church isn’t solely to get Northlanders connected to one another, but to equip us to take the gospel to a wanting world.

“At your first gathering, go around the room and say your name, the top three sins you struggle with, and how you can hold one another accountable as you carpool to work!”

It isn’t about adding another activity; it’s about increasing the intentionality of what you do, integrating your spiritual life with your everyday life. For example, a distributed church wouldn’t be in addition to a small group. More than likely, your small group is a distributed church in formation. The relationships you have with those who follow Christ hold the potential to be a distributed church in formation. There just becomes a greater degree of intentionality and prioritization, which happens naturally as you grow in relationships.

We want to help people develop spiritual families that endure. The last thing we want is to break up those families! Is starting new groups a part of the distributed church’s life and growth? Yes. But that also happens naturally as we respond to opportunities God brings our way to expand the church and take the love of God into new contexts. Expansion is driven by the Holy Spirit and the love of people we’re serving, not a preprogrammed number. It doesn’t matter how big the church is—that’s not the key thing. The key thing is the heart to include the unincluded. Expansion is born out of that desire.

Planting Churches, Making Disciples in Uganda BY DR. DAN LACICH

he church is alive and well, expanding around the world, and Northland is a part of that expansion. Few places where we are involved are experiencing that expansion faster and with greater impact than Uganda. Over the past three years, we have partnered with Pastor Robert Nabulere and the Miracle Center Church to train hundreds of pastors and church leaders in the basics of ministry, especially the multiplication of disciples and churches. The results have been stunning and beyond our wildest dreams. The work began with the training of more than one hundred pastors and leaders in the capital city of Kampala. That three-day training gave them the basic philosophy of the distributed church and the planting of distributed churches. It also covered how to interpret the Bible, and the life of a Christian leader. Before that training ended, those pastors were so energized by the vision and training they received that they self-organized into four regional teams with a plan to have the training take place in all four regions of the country.

When we returned six months later to do the second level of training with those pastors, they were already set for level one to take place in the Western Region in the city of Kabale. That was followed by training in the Northern Region in the city of Gulu, and finally in the Eastern Region in Soroti. In the time that we have been partnering with our brothers and sisters in Uganda, we have directly trained more than 500 pastors and leaders in the distributed church principles of church-planting and disciple-making. What is more exciting is that many of those we have trained have become trainers in their own right and have continued to pass on what they have received so that even more pastors and church leaders have been trained. The result is that churches are being planted all over Uganda, with many people coming to faith in Christ. On the recent visit to finish the training and introduce the Uganda leadership team to the concept of Distributed Training Centers for ongoing training, our team was blown away by some of the new churches we visited. One church was started a year ago by Pastor Sejemba. After he took the Level 1 Distributed Church Training, he went to the local prison and was able to begin holding regular services there. Sean Cooper, Josh Stephans and I, along with some of the Ugandan pastors, were able to go into the prison and worship with more than 100 of the inmates. You cannot imagine how rough the conditions were – extreme overcrowding, dirt floors, no shoes, everyone in tattered bright orange jumpsuits – yet these men and women had a joy in the Lord that was contagious. They would not have met Christ if not for a pastor taking his training and deciding that church did not have to be in a traditional building. We also heard from Pastor Michael, a young man in his mid-20s who has planted more than 50 churches in the two

years since he participated in the training. In addition, he has trained dozens of others and is seeing a rapid multiplication of churches and disciples. One recent convert to Christ was a bodyguard for the Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony. That man is now being mentored by Michael every day, studying the Scriptures, praying and sharing Christ with others as he prepares to plant a church. The next step is to establish these leaders even deeper in the faith and improve their understanding of the Bible, practical ministry and the leading of networks of churches. That is where the Distributed Training Center comes in. In partnership with BILD and The Antioch School, the Uganda network is being introduced to the “First Principles” studies that many Northlanders have done as well as the Leadership Training Materials that potentially can lead to degrees in ministry. The stories of lives being changed, churches being planted and communities being transformed could fill a book. Almost on a weekly basis, I receive reports of great things God is doing from pastors in all four regions of Uganda. In each case, they are quick to credit the distributed church principles for revolutionizing their thinking and freeing them to plant churches and make disciples as never before. As apostle Kiiza in Kabale put it: “I was planting churches the hard way. When I learned the principles of the distributed church, I was taught the easy way.” Doing it the hard way – by first getting a building and sound system and chairs, and holding a big rally – apostle Kiiza and his church had planted three churches in five years. Since the training, they have planted a church a month, and some of those churches have planted churches that also have planted churches. They are at the third generation of church multiplication … and they are only just beginning.

SERVING TO EMPOWER Join Faith and Finances Class helps the financially vulnerable

aith and Finances, a study for equipping financially vulnerable individuals with a biblical vision of money management, is gearing up, and you can get involved in many ways. You can join as a participant or a financial ally, or train to become a facilitator. If you have struggled with finances or have a heart to serve those struggling, join the Faith and Finances community. The next class starts September 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in room 5106. • Are willing to pursue their group members through phone calls and visits after Faith and Finances ends. • Have had success and have experience in other helping roles that require high levels of patience. • Have the time and emotional stamina to walk with someone through ups and downs.

The Typical Participant The typical Faith and Finances participant: • Is a financially vulnerable adult. • Has limited financial training and a high school-level education. • Has some personal debt. • Has no emergency fund. • Does not live within a budget. • Has a net worth near or below zero. • Is a low-income single mom (on Social Security, disability or other assistance).

How to Become a Facilitator If you are interested in being a facilitator, these are the steps to take: • Complete four weeks of online training, unpacking the principles of effective poverty alleviation and adult education. • Attend the live training event, practice facilitating the course, and use the curriculum with other ministry leaders and Faith and finance staff. • Join the online community of facilitators and staff members, and learn from one another’s experiences and support one another in prayer.

Characteristics of Financial Allies Financial allies: • Have a passionate relationship with Jesus Christ. • Are willing to be vulnerable about their own lives. • Have experience in mentoring someone else or raising children. • Are willing to really listen and pray with others.

The training cost to become a facilitator is $450 at the early bird rate and $500 within one week of the training. The LifeHope ChildCare Center will holistically serve single mothers with newborns to children 18 months old and who face the barrier of child care in order to achieve their goals. Stuff the Bus Collects 500 Bags of School Supplies

e collected more than 500 bags of school supplies, which were given to A Gift for Teaching-Seminole. This program puts school supplies into the hands of teachers who are closest to the need and allows the teachers to provide the necessary supplies to kids throughout the school year. Thank you for helping to meet this need!

Red Bag Project Helps School Pantries

e collected 12,673 pounds of food, which allowed us to make 1,475 bags that will help stock the pantry for two Seminole County schools: Winter Springs Elementary and Milwee Middle. A special thank you goes to the 182 volunteers who helped pick up, sort and package the food. We could not have done this huge project without you!

MAKE A CONNECTION … “Put the Brakes” on Human Trafficking BY JAMES LI

James: In your recent workshop, what kind of training was involved for the congregants?

orthland’s 121Hope ministry launched in May and had its first training session August 13. Recently, I spoke with Abi Mills, the manager of the new initiative, about her thoughts, perspectives and hopes for this ministry. James: Abi, please share with us a little about your background, education and role as the manager of 121Hope.

Abi: In 2009, I joined a Distributed Journey to serve with a Ukrainian ministry called Hope for Orphans. I bonded so well with the Ukrainians that I started serving with their ministry nearly every summer (and a few winters). It was through these trips that I was confronted with the reality of human trafficking, a crime many Ukrainian orphans fall victim to. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English from Rollins College, I moved to the U.K. for a year to intern with International Justice Mission. Once I returned to Florida, I realized human trafficking exists right here at home, and that led me to join Northland’s anti-trafficking efforts and launch 121Hope. James: What is human trafficking? Abi: Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery. Victims of human trafficking are subjected to force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of commercial sex, debt bondage or forced labor. It is a crime that happens all over the world. James: Human trafficking is obviously a serious issue internationally. Is it true that it happens in the United States?

Abi: On August 13, we had T1 Orientation and Safety Protocol training. These were foundational “ground rules” trainings, establishing how we speak about and respond to human trafficking. Our trainings are organized into three tiers of engagement: Tier 1 focuses on understanding human trafficking and building awareness; Tier 2 involves training for people who want to become advocates, speaking publicly in different settings to compel the community into action; and Tier 3 involves ministering directly to survivors of and people vulnerable to human trafficking. James: Does 121Hope work and partner with other agencies to fight human trafficking? Abi: 121Hope collaborates with many wonderful local and national organizations fighting to end trafficking. Many of our trainings come from other groups already doing amazing work. We also partner with ConnectCity, a nonprofit housed at Northland, to serve women coming out of human trafficking. James: September 26 is the 121 Hope 5K Run/Walk. Please share about this event and how people can get involved. Abi: We are so excited about this event! It’s a great opportunity for our community to unite for a worthy cause. All net proceeds will go to support ConnectCity’s two-year therapeutic residential community for trafficking survivors, and everyone who participates in the event will have the opportunity to learn more about how to identify and respond to human trafficking. We need runners, walkers, cheer squads and volunteers to make this event happen. People can register for the race on Northland’s website and at 121Hope.com, and they can contact me if they are interested in volunteering the day of the event.

Abi: Absolutely. Both labor and sex trafficking are issues deeply ingrained in our communities all across the States. More than 350 cases of human trafficking were reported in Florida alone last year. As recently as August 14, two men were arrested in Gainesville for trafficking a 15-year-old girl. Trafficking happens right before our eyes; often we just don’t see it. James: What is the goal of the 121Hope anti-human trafficking ministry? Abi: The goal of 121Hope is twofold: to bring hope to victims and survivors of human trafficking, and to empower local abolitionists, all through one-to-one discipleship. We recognize that human trafficking is a symptom of a deeper issue – broken relationships. If we can learn to live justly together and build strong, healthy relationships in our community, then we will help stop human trafficking.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives. All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
