Spiritual Autism A MESSAGE FROM DR. JAMES L. COFFIELD, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF COUNSELING AT REFORMED THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, ORLANDO

What’s Current

(Read about Dr. Coffield and his life in ministry at rts.edu/orlando/faculty/bio.aspx?id=94.) SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

James 4:1-4 (NIV) “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (NIV) “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” WORSHIP FOCUS:

Worship God today as our relentless Redeemer. It is His nature to restore and rebuild, though we may grow weary or helpless in our process to get better. God is always working in us to complete the work He has begun. He will give us the mind of Christ.

How do you tend to get lost in meaningless, repetitive behaviors in your spiritual life?

Talk about it:

Use these questions in your community group this week to get things started.

• Three common indicators of autism are the lack of ability to build significant relationships, the tendency to repeat meaningless actions, and a developmental delay that results in a lack of understanding. Where have you seen these symptoms present in your spiritual development? • How does Christ help us overcome our spiritual autism? • What are the signs that we are developing the mind of Christ?

RESPOND TO GOD by Dr. Joel C. Hunter Part 1: Worship God

Northland’s mission statement reads, in part: “We believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others.” Following is the first in a series of teachings from Dr. Hunter on what it means to respond to God through corporate worship. Explore responding to God at northlandchurch.net/respond.

W

orship: It’s what we’re going to be doing for an eternity. It is so important because it absolutely reorients our lives. Worship is a way to say: “God, You created all this; You’re sovereign in all this. Help us to consider Your perspective. Help us to understand that all things are under Your power and control, and everything that’s happening is for our good.” Jesus says in John 4:23: “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (NASB). There are two components to worship. One is emotional and relational, and one is intellectual and propositional. When we worship Him in spirit, there’s an affective connection with a God who is very connected to us. The Greek word that is used here for “worship” is proskuneo. It literally means to prostrate ourselves so we can be closer to kiss. But there’s also worshiping in truth ... There are times when we just aren’t feeling it. What do we do in those times? Worship in truth, the Bible says. When we worship God, it is not to seek His hand, but to seek His face.

We worship God not so we can get what we want, but so we can give Him what He wants. We worship Him not so we can move higher in the rankings, but so we can rank Him where He belongs. We worship God for who He is, not only for what He has done. Richard Cook wrote this: “Worshiping a God of truth is more difficult because the truth is that God is the healer, but it’s more difficult when He has not healed yet. The truth is God is the provider, but it’s more difficult when He has not provided yet. The truth is God is able, but it’s more difficult when He has been unwilling so far. Nonetheless, I will worship God for who He is because that is what is true.” He is calling us to worship in spirit and in truth. In John 4:23, Jesus goes on to say, “for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers” (emphasis added). Everything that happens is at God’s leading, for His purposes and His glory. It’s not something we came up with; it’s something He has arranged and we’ve responded to. Do we know why we are here today? It wasn’t our idea; it’s because the Father has sought us out. First John 4:19 says, “We love, because He first loved us.” We’re chosen by design. When I was young, I lived in a small town, and often the YMCA or some organization would sponsor dances to give the kids something healthy to do. We’d go to a dance, and all the boys would be on one side, and the girls would be on the other. The music would play, and the girls would dance with one another. We guys didn’t really dance because we thought we would look stupid. But every once in a while, the DJ would call out, “Ladies’ choice.” That’s when the girls would come over and ask the guys if they would like to dance. You could just feel the tension in the guys because they didn’t know who was coming for them to do the Mashed Potato. But some of us knew who would be asking us. We had a “prearranged relationship,” and we looked forward to being chosen. Brothers and sisters, we have a prearranged relationship. We’ve been chosen by the God who has loved us since the beginning of time. There’s nothing in our flesh that wants this. We’re here because God has put it into our hearts to glorify Him, to do the right thing, to worship God together. Gathering together is important whether or not we feel like we’re getting much out of it because we are doing what Christ showed us to do. In Luke 4:16, we read, “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath.” If Jesus needed to go to church, don’t we? Seriously, here’s the Son of God, and He could have just said, “Got it,” because He did ... He was it! But He chose to be with other believers. There is something we get in corporate worship that we can’t get in personal worship. The more often we find ourselves in the company of other Christians, the surer we are of our own identity and the more strength we have to live according to God’s ways. I heard a story about an old guy who went to a little church and sat in the same pew every Sunday. His hearing started to go, and pretty soon he couldn’t hear anything. But he was in that pew every Sunday. Finally, someone wrote him a note: “Harold, we know you are stone-cold deaf. You can’t hear a thing that’s going on! Why do you keep coming?” He wrote back, “I just want to show the devil whose side I’m on.” It matters that we gather together and worship God.

Serve GLOBaLly Opposite Sides of the World, One Purpose By Laurie Barker Copeland

I

t was after midnight, and I was leaving for a Northland Distributed Journey to Ukraine that morning. While finishing up the final packing, I was struck with the idea to give the girls at the orphanage the message of Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV): “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” I wrote down the Scripture, translated it into Russian using my phone app, and made and decorated enough copies for approximately 40 orphan girls. I had no idea how I was going to distribute the verses, except to simply hand them out once I got there. Our team arrived in Ukraine, which used to be part of the former Soviet Union. The orphanage isn’t Christianbased, but the folks there allowed us to hold evening programs and Bible lessons, teach crafts, play games and simply love the kids. We worked side by side with a hardworking Christian Ukrainian team. During morning announcements on the fourth day, the program director, Ula, announced that we were going to hold a girls get-together that afternoon, and they would like an American to do the speaking. I have spoken to groups before, but not without preparing for days! This idea scared the living daylights out of me, but I knew this was what God

had prepared me for. I thought about Nellie, an orphan who spoke of committing suicide. She needed to know she was not a mistake, but part of God’s plan. The weather was perfect. We set up under a big shady tree, laying out bedspreads to sit on. Olesya was trying to convince Nellie to attend, but she refused. I said a quick prayer that she would change her mind. About 50 mostly teenage girls showed up. I shared, through a translator, my own insecurities and how I have to plant my security on Him each day, not on my inadequate self. We passed out the verses and had a question-and-answer time, when lots of questions were asked. Then we followed up with spa time, with makeup and nail polish that another team member, Marylee, brought. Afterward, a member from the Ukrainian team, who knew I had written these verses ahead of time, said: “It’s funny how God spoke to us before camp, telling us to have a special girls get-together. But we had no idea what would be said or what we would do. Then God spoke to you all with what to say and do. Isn’t it amazing how God can arrange for people from two countries on opposite sides of the world to come together with one purpose?” It’s amazing indeed. I don’t know the direct outcome of that get-together, but I know we planted seeds. The girls were receptive, attentive and inquisitive. Later in the week, quite a few orphans came to know Jesus as their personal Savior! God still speaks. It’s our job to listen. Are you part of God’s plan for these orphans? These children are in desperate need of our prayers. The Christian Ukrainian team, in Kiev, does a fantastic job, but doesn’t live locally to provide the daily discipleship. This was our second year visiting this orphanage. Some of the orphans who became Christians last year fell away, perhaps due to a lack of fellowship. As one orphan said, “Our faith leaves when you leave.” This sobering comment drives our team to pray for these orphans daily. Just like God led the Ukrainian and American teams in a common direction, we pray you will join your faith with ours in praying for these orphans. First, you can pray for those who have made commitments to Jesus: Pasha, Olesya, Nina, Tolic, Yulia, Yanik, Marianna, Yura, Leanna, Natasha, Misha, Julia, Renada and Nazar. Pray that they will continue to trust in God, placing their

At the airport, ready to go! security on Him and Him alone. Other children who are not Christians who need our prayers are: Nellie, Nadia, Natasha, Victoria, Vova, Kolya, Yulya, Zaryana, Lyosha, Sasha, Vitalik, Lena, Ivan, Oleg, Kristina, Maryana, Liana, Veronica, Leyona, Tanya, Ruslan, Bogdan, Yura, Max, Gena and Dima. Pray also for a local Christian leader to rise up among this group, and for Laura, an administrator who was especially open to our Christian presence. I remember the eyes of these orphans, and then I think about my own daughter here in the States. I’m reminded how the orphans are just like my daughter, except for a few things that keep them worlds apart. By going on Distributed Journeys, we see how God works our two worlds together, and we see their (and our) desperate need. Please join us in prayer for these incredible children. Then, consider joining us on a journey next year! What ever happened to Nellie? After telling me she wouldn’t come to the girls get-together, she showed up! I don’t know what was happening in her heart, but she started to smile a lot more. God’s Word doesn’t return void, and I believe God’s love is working on her. That’s all the more reason to pray. ast month Northland held its yearly backpack and school supply drive. The Longwood, Oviedo and Mount Dora sites all took part! Once again, I was blown away by the way our church family pulled together for this opportunity to serve our community. At a time when so many families are struggling and in need, Northlanders gave more than 1,180 backpacks! It was truly a blessing to see all of your smiling faces bring in your donations over the weekend. The backpacks collected at Longwood went to three local organizations: Christian HELP, Harvest Time International and A Gift for Teaching Seminole County. These organizations then worked within Seminole County to get the supplies into the hands of kids in need. The Oviedo and Mount Dora sites also gave their backpacks to organizations serving kids in need in their respective areas. I had the opportunity to deliver most of those backpacks to our partners, and I can’t begin to express their gratitude toward everyone who donated.

Thank you, Northland, for meeting the needs of so many people in our community. Thank you for reaching beyond the walls of the building and going the extra mile to share God’s love with your neighbors. The next Local Serve Day is Saturday, October 8. If you’re looking for a place to start serving the local community, this quarterly event is the perfect starting point! Local Serve Day starts bright and early in the morning with breakfast and live music at Longwood before everyone heads out in teams to various service projects. Project registration opens Saturday, September 10. Projects fill up fast, so get your friends and family on board early! Register at serve.northlandchurch.net.

What is a “church distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities. If you wish to learn more about the church distributed, you may purchase the book Church Distributed, by Dr. Joel C. Hunter, at the Northland Bookstore or Amazon.com. All proceeds go to Northland.

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

our purpose: Why we are here From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

our vision: What we see

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

our mission: What we do

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
