THE DIVISION LEADERSHIP CAUSES John 10:1-21 (NASB)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.

So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

Prayer

Most righteous God, we remember the perfect sacrifice offered once on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ for the sin of the whole world.

In the joy of His resurrection and in the expectation of His coming again, we offer ourselves to You as holy and living sacrifices.

Together we proclaim the mystery of the faith.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Understanding that story is crucial to our growth and effectiveness as believers.

This fall Northland’s elders are leading a class called Firm Foundations, which moves through the Old and New Testaments and highlights the themes that run through all of God’s Word. This builds, from lesson to lesson, an understanding of the Bible as a whole.

We caught up with Don Pederson, who leads the study with fellow elder Mike Sheffey, to learn more about this unique opportunity.

You and Mike offered this class last year. How did that go?

Great! Last fall about 50 Northlanders embarked on a seven-month adventure that ended in the spring. We studied the great themes of Scripture as revealed in the Old and New Testaments, starting in Genesis 1:1 and ending with the ascension of Christ. We can’t wait to get started again.

That’s quite a list! Can you talk a little more about the God of the Old and New Testament being the same? Sometimes they seem so different.

That’s a great question. There is a common belief that the God of the Old Testament is angry and vengeful, while the God of the New Testament is loving and kind. In fact, at a membership seminar here at Northland recently, a woman at the table I was hosting said, “I’ve been reading the Old Testament lately, and I’ve got to tell you, God really seems mean, and I don’t like Him at all.” That perspective comes from focusing on only one aspect of some of the well-known events in the Old Testament. Some examples: • God banished Adam and Eve from the garden and told them they would die just for eating fruit from a tree He had forbidden.

• He destroyed all but eight people in the flood because of their wickedness.

• He commanded Joshua to destroy the city of Jericho.

However, there is another side to each of these stories. God Blesses Dominican Republic Team provides VBS and medical education, builds chapel.

O

n July 4, an awesome group of adults and teens ventured from Orlando on a journey to serve in the Dominican Republic. In all the months of preparation, never could we have imagined that our mission would be accomplished in such a beautiful way.

What amazed us is how God could bring a group of people together that perfectly fit as a team to accomplish one set goal.

During our week in the Dominican Republic, we ministered in the villages of San Felipe and Manta de los Indios, and a church called IBQ (Baptist Quisqueyana).

Our Vacation Bible School message was twofold, teaching about germ transmission and the importance of washing our hands and how soap and water cannot clean our hearts, but Jesus does when we invite Him in.

Our health message was a different twist on the Bible stories generally expected in a VBS message, but with much encouragement we prepared what we felt the Lord lead us to share. The message to the children was very well received, and the residents were grateful for the attention to their health through education. We ended with the focus on the importance of receiving Jesus to clean our hearts, which resulted in many village children receiving Jesus.

In addition to our VBS message, our medical professionals (two nurses and pharmacists who were moms who randomly joined our team, as God would have it) were able to conduct educational workshops and medical clinics for the adults and children. They cared for people with everything you could imagine: cuts, third-

degree burns, rashes, pain and discomfort due to viruses, and many types of bacterial infections, to name a few. They served hundreds of people during the course of our week.

Another exciting thing that our med team got to do was conduct a first aid/CPR workshop for a group of 40 men and women who are the first responders in Villa Mella, Santo Domingo. The 911 system had just gone into operation weeks before our arrival, and while these citizens stepped up to volunteer, these individuals had no formal training. This educational workshop was a huge success.

On top of how God blessed in these workshops, our team, with His help, started and completed a chapel for Manta de los Indios during that week. The pastors of this village were grateful for their new place of worship.

There is no real way to put into words the experience of serving others in a foreign country. When you go expecting to bless those you are serving and then find that somewhere in the midst of it all, your heart has been deeply touched, it is a testament to how God works.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Gain Wisdom in These Serving to Empower Opportunities Community Action Poverty Simulation Friday, August 29, or Saturday, October 11, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The Rink. What is the Poverty Simulation?

It is a guided experience designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security.

When Helping Hurts: Small Group Experience Thursdays, October 23 through December 11 (except November 6 and 27), 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., room 4205. Join them as they explore and unpack the principles of poverty alleviation in an accessible way. Each of the lessons includes discussion questions, application exercises and materials for further learning. Be a Financial Ally Attend orientation training.

ongregants Carol Davila, Patricia Harper and Maria Penzes recently attended training to become facilitators of the “Faith and Finances” program offered by the Chalmers Center.

“As a public educator for 38 years, I have witnessed the effects of a lower-income standard of living on students,” Patricia said. “It affects not only the material part of their world, but also the social and emotional. What makes Faith and Finances different from other financial management classes is the emphasis on the relationships with God, self and others, and how the healing of these relationships many times can begin through better money management skills. It will be an exciting new chapter in helping those in need.”

Carol Davila, a LifeHope Budget counselor, recently shared, “I’m really excited about offering a financial course designed specifically for the lower-income sector of our community, which teaches more than just the nuts and bolts of financial management, but guides the participant into a reconciled relationship with God, self and community.”

A pilot of this class is being offered now to the HAT program participants. Starting in January, Faith and Finances will be available in the evenings as we partner with other organizations in outreach. The 12-session Faith and Finances teaches basic technical financial management skills, awareness of good financial practices, and how to overcome real world pitfalls. It also offers encouragement from brothers and sisters coming together to experience how Jesus can provide peace, healing and freedom through restored relationships with Him, with others, with ourselves and with our money.

Come and join us and other Northlanders as we embark upon a new journey in serving to empower others as Financial Allies! If you have attended Crown Financial Ministries or Financial Peace University courses, we need you as a Financial Ally.

An ally walks alongside a class participant as someone who also has broken relationships that need to be restored, and it is in this mutual brokenness that relationships can be restored and dignity is preserved for both parties. Both parties bring strengths and gifts to the table that can empower. Change is both hard and messy, and Allies can be the difference between success and failure in making long-lasting changes in behavior. An Ally maintains once- or twice-a-month contact for several months after the class. An Ally serves as an accountability partner as well as an encourager to celebrate success and help solve missteps.

Steps to Be the Church Everywhere, Every Day Dr. Hunter answers your questions.

O

ver the past several weekends, we have heard Pastor Hunter talk about the vision God has given him for this church – the same vision God gave His original church. Pastor Hunter shared his passion about Northland’s next step in becoming a church that is distributed everywhere, every day, starting right here in our own communities. He began laying the groundwork for how this church of 20,000 can become a church of “a thousand churches of 20” that eventually multiply even more churches – all made up of disciples of Jesus in community for the benefit of others where they are. The most powerful force for good is a community of people, transformed by Jesus, serving others.

This transition will take time. We’re being asked to be part of a movement, to go beyond simple participation in worship services and to reflect the nature of God through arranging our lives together with others, around the gospel.

Pastor Hunter will unpack what that means for us over the coming months. He is committed to walking with us through this journey so we can be the church everywhere.

With that, let’s hear from Pastor Hunter as we address some of the questions you’ve been asking.

Hi, Pastor Hunter! You introduced us to “I AM = US FOR THEM, THERE” in your recent sermons. Would you explain how this connects us toward becoming a church distributed?

Sure! The first-century church met not only in the Temple, but also from house to house (Acts 2:46). That is what God is calling us to do: re-form our existing relationships so that we can better serve others in Jesus’ name. It’s a biblical model that makes loving our neighbor as ourselves simple – not always easy, but simple. Just last week I wrote a blog discussing the nuts and bolts of the statement “I AM = US FOR THEM, THERE.” You can find it on our website, at northlandchurch.net/blogs.

How do I find my “us”?

There are a couple of immediate ways to find your “us.”

One is to begin to consider the Christian relationships you already have as the beginning of a “team for ministry” and eventually a “distributed church.” An “us” is not just a friendship; it’s a relationship with someone who connects you with Christ and those He loves. It goes beyond simple friendship. A good way to begin the discussion of moving those relationships into a team and a distributed church is to go through booklets we have called First Principles. This will help everyone get the training he or she needs while learning how to make disciples.

Another way is to form new relationships with those at Northland who are already beginning First Principles groups or distributed church gatherings. The Hub is a great place to go to help you connect with them.

And another avenue is to pursue deeper relationships with those in the various ministries and classes you attend (or would like to attend) to see how you can create an “us” with

them “for them, there.” To learn more about all the classes and ministries available for you to connect with, visit The Hub after service.

I’m currently in a small group/Bible study. How is this different from a distributed church?

Bible study groups and other small groups are great, but they don’t have the same form, or function in the same way, as a church. A small group generally focuses on those in the group for the sake of the group. They are a tight-knit group of people focused on either the spiritual maturity of those in the group, or a particular study. There is no problem with this type of group, and it can be beneficial for discipleship, but the distributed church functions in a different way. The best way to describe how the distributed church functions is through these four S’s: 1. Self-identity – Those in the community understand their identity and function as that of a church. It’s not just a slice of the pie, but a whole pie. And they align with the historical theological creeds.

2. Sacred practices – They integrate the sacred practices of Communion, baptism, weddings and funerals – practices that affirm identity – into their community life and worship.

3. Service to empower – They are who they are for the benefit of others, and embrace the opportunities for ministry that God brings their way.

4. Spontaneous expansion – They are focused on the expansion of the church. They are churches that plant churches that plant churches.

Is a First Principles group a distributed church?

If not, what’s the benefit of going through this series, and how does it relate to our distributed church vision?

Every group or relationship that is trying to know God better or do God’s will can be the beginning of a distributed church. The best way to begin to grow in maturity in Christ is through discipleship in community.

First Principles groups are Northland’s core discipleship process, teaching what it means to be in community with others who point us toward Christ. This study clearly teaches us what it means to be not only a disciple, but a disciple who makes disciples, who plants churches. It is through this kind of grassroots discipleship and church planting that we will become a church of churches.

When Jesus, in Matthew 28, said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (vv. 19-20, NASB), He was saying, “Go … be the ‘Us for Them, There.’” We are called to be in close relationships (communities or churches) with one another that help us grow to maturity in Christ so that we can be the church for others everywhere, every day.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010).
