What’s Current
The First and Future Church II A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR
Here’s a sampling of the many upcoming opportunities to respond to God.
(Read about Pastor Joel at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Stay informed about his involvement with current events at pastorjoelhunter.com.)
Acts 15:4-11, 28-29 (NASB) When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses.” The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.” “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell.”

YOU.
The Distributed Church = By Dr. Margi McCombs with Tracy Weiss
“Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in Love with God, stay in Love, and it will decide everything.” — Pedro Arrupe, SJ (1907-91)
S
ure, the distributed church is a corporate vision, but it only holds weight and impact if it’s your personal vision as well. The question for each of us is one of identity and life mission. Going forward, each one of us must consider these simple and revealing questions: How am I the distributed church? Whom am I discipling? To whom am I being the church? With whom have I connected to be discipled? Have I fallen in Love? Let’s play with a metaphor. If each cell in the human body contains the entire DNA of that particular body, then we can postulate that each individual in the church body also must carry the entire DNA of that church body. That is, the full identity of the distributed church should be evident in each person who is part of it. So, what is our DNA?
AM learning more about who God is and what He has done through reading and studying the Bible, and so on. But you are not doing it alone. “I Am = Us” means that you are connected to others who share the same identity in Christ, who have a common passion for spiritual formation and who are pursuing spiritual growth. We were never meant to do life and ministry alone — remember, a cell of the body, even though it carries the full DNA of that body, cannot survive apart from the body. “I Am = Us” is a beautiful statement of the body of Christ, the corporate connection we have, sharing together the life-giving qualities of the same blood — that is, the blood of Jesus, which cleanses, heals and restores us to salvation. But there’s an even greater purpose in God’s desire for us to work together. “for Them, There” gives our connection in the body of Christ a missional impulse; it states the reason we’re still here on earth — for the benefit of others! Just as Christ didn’t stay in heaven, but came to us so that we can know Him, we are each called to go to where people are and, through building relationships and loving them well, help others become disciples of Christ. As we go, we’ll do a lot of good along the way. In Christ’s name and for His sake, we will help the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor teens, build houses, care for orphans and encourage single parents. Yet, the underlying, overarching reason we do all these things and more is so that people would know God and, ultimately, enter into a personal relationship with Him, becoming a lifelong follower and disciple.
We, the church, are designed for participation in the gospel in an “all in, all day” kind of way that reflects who God is and what He has done.
I AM = US FOR THEM, THERE We, the church, are designed for participation in the gospel in an “all in, all day” kind of way that reflects who God is and what He has done. God, who identified Himself as the great “I AM” and is a triune God as Father, Son and Spirit and so refers to Himself as “US,” didn’t stay in heaven apart from His creation. Instead, the great “I AM US” came to earth, where people lived, to bring salvation and restoration to a broken world. So, the odd sentence, “I Am = Us for Them, There” becomes a succinct statement of who God is and what He has done for us. We, His church, can use this same odd sentence to describe who we are and what we should be about every day. It’s a statement of identity, one that requires present and personal participation. That’s the “I AM” part — YOU, with the indwelling of Christ. I AM making disciples and helping others grow in their faith and knowledge of God, I AM growing in my own faith, I
GET EQUIPPED How can I fulfill the mission of the distributed church? Whom do I know that I could encourage toward spiritual growth and who could becoming a disciple of Jesus’? How can I grow in my own faith and knowledge of God? No doubt, these questions and others pepper your mind and can seem daunting. Immobilization is not an option. Personal participation is the answer. There are lots of opportunities at and beyond Northland to learn about God, to study the Bible, and to be encouraged in your marriage, parenting and other relationships. Training in how to meet the needs of others, manage your money, improve your health, and enhance the well-being of your family and friends is literally a page flip away! The back of this paper is chock-full of ways to grow as a disciple and as one who disciples. Those opportunities, the corporate worship and teaching you participate in each week, and the special events that sprinkle the calendar throughout the year all are offered for a single purpose: to equip you to be the distributed church — proclaiming Christ and making Him known in every relationship you have, everywhere, every day.

Northland + Ombeyi = Urafiki (Friendship) BY PATTI HARSHEY, Distributed Journeys Administrator
N
orthland + Ombeyi = Urafiki. That’s what was printed on the T-shirts we took with us to give to the children we served while in Kenya on a 12-day mission. And while we certainly did form friendships in Ombeyi, Kenya, our experience was so much deeper and wider than that. When asked to pen this article about my mission trip to Kenya, I was at a loss for what to write. How would I, an inept, uncreative writer, describe this “mountaintop” experience with God, this journey that was like nothing I have ever witnessed, this mission that brought me to my knees in prayer and in despair? As I type this, it has been less than a week since my team of nine returned from Kisumu, Kenya. Trying to process all that happened to us and through us there and put it on paper at this juncture is like trying to push a hippo through a porthole. Trust me on this one. We saw hippos up close and personal on Lake Victoria; they are humongous. I guess my best shot at beginning to describe the experience is through pictures. Take a look at the faces of the beautiful children on this page. Our team worked with Christ’s Hope to begin to set up a Care Point in Ombeyi, a rural village north of Kisumu. Children in Ombeyi are very poor. We hear all the time about children living in poverty. The word has lost its meaning for many of us, as we have never been close to it, and seeing it depicted on TV or in magazines is a far cry from being present in the day-to-day unforgiving reality of it. Until you see it with your own eyes, and touch and smell it — children with bloated bellies and skeletal frames from malnutrition, children with no shoes, clothes, beds or toilets — you just can’t grasp the inhumanity of it. Many of them
either are orphaned, having lost both parents to the AIDS pandemic in Africa, or are living with one parent, who may or may not be sick with the disease. Many of the children have AIDS themselves or tuberculosis or both. Their guardians cannot afford to provide enough food to feed the children, let alone send them to school. That’s where the Care Point comes in. The Care Point at Ombeyi hopes to “adopt” 25 children (hopefully 50 in the near future) to give them the opportunity to go to school, get three meals a week and receive medical care. We registered 38 children during our time in Ombeyi, but unless sponsors come forward for them, 13 of the 38 will be cut from the program. Yet humbly, in the face of their deplorable circumstances, they praise God joyfully and freely with raised-up voices and carefree dancing, pray to Him fervently, trust Him with everything, and thank Him for His love, His provision, His goodness and His gift of salvation through Christ Jesus. It is a wonder to behold, and I felt extremely small in my devotion in comparison, but so grateful that I was given the chance to affirm and strengthen my relationship with God as a result of these precious Kenyan children’s abiding faith. They were delightful — so easy to love, so willing to please. Laughter, smiles, games, singing and frequent hugs were our means of communication. They live and breathe by 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (NIV). I have meditated on that verse every day since I left Ombeyi, and I pray that God will burn it in my heart. I urge you to find a child on this page, and pray hard for him or her. Pray that God will bless the child with a sponsor. In the coming months, you may have the opportunity to become directly involved in the Care Point in Ombeyi, either going to Kenya yourself on a Distributed Journey (which you would never regret) or becoming involved in sponsoring a child. Having lived it, I think I would now have the T-shirt read “Northland + Ombeyi = Abundant Love” — and a life-changing, faith-building, Godinfused journey that will live on in me and through me for all the days of my life. SERVE LOCALLY Local Service in September BY DANA DEVRIES
O
ne of the most practical ways to “be the church” everywhere, every day is by serving in the local community. At Northland, service is not just something we do; it’s an essential part of who we are. Serving in the local community is a very tangible way of demonstrating God’s love for those around us. We know that figuring out where, how and when to serve can be challenging, so here are a few specific opportunities to serve in September and beyond: Harmony House — Along with Habitat for Humanity and several other houses of worship, we are helping to build a home in the Altamonte Springs community through an interfaith build initiative, appropriately named Harmony House. The house will bring together Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths for the purpose of building a simple, decent, affordable home in partnership with a family in need. These family members already have gone through budgeting classes to prepare them for meeting the demands of their new mortgage and have put in “sweat equity” helping to build their home as well as other Habitat houses. We are looking forward to welcoming them into their new home in November! Construction will resume in early September, and we need plenty of volunteers to help out. There will be needs for both skilled construction volunteers as well as unskilled volunteers every Saturday and Sunday through November. Come work alongside friends of different faiths to serve those in need! Look for details on days and times volunteers are needed on our Serve Beyond Northland blog page at northlandchurch.net/blogs/category/serve_beyond_ northland.
LifeHope — You may have seen the opportunity to meet the financial needs of those people walking through the doors of LifeHope on our Live Generously page at generous.northlandchurch.net. Did you know that you also can volunteer your time with LifeHope? LifeHope needs volunteers to assist with greeting and meeting guests, data entry and answering phones, as well as volunteer case managers and more! Interested in volunteering with LifeHope? Just visit northlandchurch.net/ministry/lifehope, and register for an orientation session that fits in your schedule.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
