— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them.

True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. — We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Pray for, care for, share the gospel with others! “Love your neighbor,� Jesus said in Matthew 22:39.

Jesus called us to love as He did everywhere and in our everyday lives. By living and loving as Jesus did, we have the opportunity to be vessels for building bridges to the gospel and for His Kingdom.

Beginning September 19, over 1,000 churches in Florida are set to participate in an event called 40 Days of Love. This campaign is encouraging people to show love to others in three different ways: by praying for them, by caring for them and by sharing the gospel with them. By connecting with at least 10 people in our communities during this time, we have the opportunity to express the distributed church by loving those around us.

With the emphasis on these three fundamentals of loving others the way Jesus did, this can be an incredible opportunity to identify how God has established a community of faith at work, at school, in your neighborhood or in your distributed church.

These 40 days are an opportunity to invite those who have not yet been included in the Kingdom of God. Do you have compassion for your neighbors? Are you trusting God to transform your neighborhood? The power of faith communities collaborating can result in a beautiful picture of loving our neighbors, just as Jesus called us to do.

orthland is involved on a large scale with mission work around the world. Recently, we talked with Sean Cooper, Northland’s Global Missions pastor, about this, along with our global missions strategy and how you can participate in building the Kingdom worldwide!

Northland: People are usually surprised when they learn more about Northland’s Global Missions involvement.

Why? Sean: Northland’s involvement around the world is extensive, more so than most congregants (and staff!) realize. We are partnered through relationship in such countries as Uganda, Haiti, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Brazil, South Africa, Swaziland, Japan, India — the list goes on, and includes places that we can’t name. People might be surprised at how much good is happening in these countries and around the world. Naturally the media covers what’s sensational, which is usually a lot of negative press, but the amount of good happening through churches and through our partners is overwhelming.

The variety of relationships is astounding. Northland is partnered with churches and Christians in Middle Eastern countries, and we hear stories of those who stay in dangerous places to serve their homes. One of our oldest partnerships is with Kithu Sevana, a church in Sri Lanka that

takes the lead on some incredible church-planting efforts, as well as anti-human trafficking and ethnic reconciliation movements.

Northland: What is Northland’s global missions strategy?

Sean: We highly value relationship and networking, or building connection between churches and organizations that we are in partnership with. While investing deeply in our existing relationships, we always seek to identify places and new relationships and partnerships. For example, we’re connecting with church leaders in northwest Brazil, where there is a high number of unreached people groups. The small role we can play is bringing to the table a variety of organizations we are in relationship with that can bring the best of what they do. For instance, a Bible translation organization is helping with translation, a separate organization is helping deliver creative evangelism tools, while another is introducing leadership and discipleship training to help sustain the growth of new churches. It’s exciting when a variety of organizations can all play a small part in an effort like this!

Northland: How can congregants be more involved, plugged in, tuned in?

Sean: We don’t have to come up with something catchy and new to offer. The things that have rung true for centuries are what will make a difference. Congregation, please pray. We’re developing new ways to get information to the congregation so that they can stay updated on developments and prayer requests. Look for these in the Respond paper!

As always, there are short-term trips. It’s an exciting time to get involved in this way!

Lastly, it would be foolish not to encourage people to keep giving financially. Right now we are in the process of establishing next year’s budget, which impacts a lot of efforts around the world. I want our congregation members to know just how meaningful their financial contributions are, not just to Northland at Longwood, but to the church around the world.

What is so important for Northlanders to remember is that this church is connected all over the world.

Evangelism, disciple-making, training of church leaders and church planting are massive efforts taking place every day. Northlanders’ prayers, financial giving and even their involvement in serving here locally — all of those things link us to God’s work around the globe.

New Life Church (Ukraine) — Located in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city, New Life is passionate about impacting its entire nation through efforts that include, but are not limited to, church planting, youth ministry, gypsy ministry and front line outreach. New Life is currently involved in supporting a network of 60-plus churches throughout the country. Known for engaging current social issues, New Life was a constant presence during the 2014 Maidan revolution through setting up a prayer and relief tent. Today, the church is actively engaged in supporting churches, troops and communities on the warfront in the East.

Compassion And REconciliation (CARE) Center

Disaster Response Team Helps People in Clendenin T

he Disaster Response team returned July 30 after spending three weeks helping the folks of Clendenin, West Virginia, in the aftermath of the flooding.

The team members provided three meals a day to many in the community, and found these mealtimes to be an excellent time to talk with and listen to the residents as they developed relationships with them. This provided lots of opportunities for ministry and prayer. The team also delivered about a dozen meals into the community each mealtime. Several people lost their cars in the flood and had no transportation, had no utilities, or were too elderly or ill to make the trip to the team’s staging area.

The team mucked out homes, removed drywall/ air-condition venting, and helped with cleaning out the church basement as well as the pastor’s home, which also was flooded. This helped to free up the pastor, who

was overwhelmed with the needs of his congregation and community. The team had many opportunities for prayer and to show Christ’s love.

As the team pulled out, it was hard to see that many businesses were still not open, but the disappearing piles of debris and the community trying to find some kind of normal warmed our hearts. The process is slowgoing and will take many months as individuals decide whether to stay and rebuild, or relocate.

Thank you for your generous support of Clendenin. The team was able to supply several families with the family packs, which included a mini refrigerator, a microwave, a slow cooker and a toaster oven. Plans to return to Clendenin are uncertain, but the team stands ready to go back in a few months if teams are needed to help with the rebuilding process.

Northland Thanks Summer Intern Asher Loy

A

s the director of Mobilization not so long ago, I had the honor and privilege of working closely with some pretty amazing volunteers. Some gave time equivalent to working a full-time job; others, who couldn’t give a lot of time, gave an enormous amount of heart, making a significant impact on the ministries with which they served. I’ve always marveled at the generosity of our Northland volunteers, and it’s never been lost on me the blessing they have been to me and in my role over the years.

This summer was no different.

For many college students, summer is a time to unwind and reconnect with old friends from high school or in the neighborhood. It’s a time to work only as much as needed for gas and lunch money for trips to the beach or theme parks. It’s an important break in an otherwise busy time of learning and growing in a young adult’s life.

Asher Loy Then there’s Asher Loy, an incoming senior at the University of Florida (Go, Gators!), a statistics major (What?) and an all-around incredible person. This summer, he was my hero.

When June 1 rolled around, I began a new role mobilizing churches to join Community Resource Network (CRN), dedicated to walking alongside families in need. One component of this initiative was building online training in a platform I knew nothing about. That’s where Asher came in. He showed up every day ready not only to help with the

technical aspect of the training build, but also to shape some of the content, offering ideas on language and design.

His influence goes well beyond CRN. Have you seen that clever photo of Pastor Gus holding up a billboard?

That was Asher’s work. Are you attending the When Helping Hurts seminar September 23 and 24? Asher helped craft the supporting materials for it. He also created the driver training for our Prison and Jail Ministry volunteers who drive the team van, and he even used his creative side to help shape a logo the CARE Center will use later this year. These are just a few ways Asher supported me and the various CARE Center staff members over the summer. His impact reaches well beyond our doors. It extends into the community and among the families we serve every day.

I don’t know if he’ll be back next summer, as he is graduating. Wherever he goes, I know he will bless others with his boundless gifts, the most evident being his love for Jesus, shown in his service to others. He does have two younger brothers who started popping up in the CARE Center over the summer, and for some reason, I think they’ll be following in their brother’s footsteps.

Thank you to Asher and all of our volunteers who give time, talent and resources, and who pour their heart into serving others and serving Northland. We appreciate you greatly!

very weekend throughout Central Florida, men and women from Northland respond to Matthew 25:36 by bringing relationship and live webstreaming worship to congregations behind bars. As you know, our mission, and what we do at Northland, is to believe God’s call as a body of believers and to respond to Him for the benefit of others. We have a mission and a calling to serve our brothers and sisters behind bars!

Bawili Family Heads to School

H

uge news! Our refugee family of 13 from the Congo, the Bawili family, has started attending Seminole County Public Schools! The kids were able to join all the other children in Seminole County in waking up early, eating breakfast, grabbing their backpacks and heading to school. We have been impressed with the love and support the children are getting not only from their teachers, but also from their principals and guidance counselors. The kids will be attending Altamonte Elementary School and Lyman High School.

Since moving to the United States in March, the family has made tremendous strides in acclimating to life here. We ask for prayers as the children continue their transition into formal education, and that supportive teachers and tutors continue to surround them.

Choosing to Love People Where God Places You

R

ecently, I was sitting at a local coffeehouse with a few friends, talking about the weekend. As conversation took place, I couldn’t help but notice a small group of people sitting around a table next to us. They seemed like regulars. Everyone who served them knew their names.

What happened next is what made me pause. They weren’t just drinking coffee and eating scones; they were sharing about a friend who had medical problems, and they were passing around a card for him. They were staying put and talking about who would be stopping by their friend’s house to bring him a meal that evening and who would help him get to his next doctor’s appointment.

The longer I listened, the clearer it became that the friend was a barista who worked at the coffeehouse who had become ill and had been out of work for several weeks.

Those regulars were being a caring community right where they were. They made this coffeehouse their mission field and people their purpose.

Maybe we could learn a bit from staying put.

We love escaping the daily grind of life, and retreating to enchanted and beautiful places. Many of us find God there in the mystery of exploring different cultures, but we must not find him only there. Why wait for your next epic adventure when you can devote yourself to the ordinary spaces, places and relationships God has already placed before you?

When we think of missions, we usually think about shortterm trips, passports and third world countries. But what if God’s mission is actually alive everywhere? What if God’s mission is right in front of you and among your family, friends and community? You don’t need to jump on a plane; you just need to be present.

For God’s work to become tangible, it must first become a lifestyle, invading our everyday thinking and the places we inhabit. That means it happens here before there. It means we begin to see our mission in practical ways, right where we are, like acknowledging the cashier across from you or asking your waiter if you can serve him.

It’s the art of staying put, and sometimes it’s far more radical than heading out to Africa for a week.

Here’s the reality: This is countercultural, but it might just be what your soul is craving. Maybe instead of scheming an escape plan, it could be time to stop long enough to consider what the impact would be if you stayed put.

It’s not easy putting roots in the soil that is already beneath you. It takes time when you don’t have time to give.

It takes staying put when you want to leave. But this is how communities are transformed — by staying put until the Kingdom comes. My friend Alan Briggs sums it up like this: “God’s mission of drawing wanderers into His family always takes place in the midst of ordinary places and relationships. This can take just as much energy, finances and careful planning as a trip across the ocean. In some ways, it might be more uncomfortable than sleeping on a dirt floor and eating strange food.

“Our mission trip started the day we were born; it ends when God calls us home.”

PASTOR’S BIO During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Floridabased congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web.

Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren.

More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
