THE PROLOGUE, THE NEW CREATION (PART 1) John 1:1-5 (NASB)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Worship Focus Worship Christ today as the Word. By the Word the heavens were made. The Word guides us, sustains us, and through Him we have life eternally.

In Hebrew the term dabar (Word) means both “word” and “deed.” Thus, to say something is to do something. “I love you.” “I hate you.” “I forgive you.” “I am afraid of you.” Who knows what such words do, but whatever it is, it can never be undone. Something that lay hidden in the heart is irrevocably released through speech into time, is given substance and tossed like a stone into the pool of history, where the concentric rings lap out endlessly. — FREDERICK BUECHNER, WISHFUL THINKING

Prayer

In the beginning was the Word. Spoken. Creating the cosmos. Jesus, You are the Word of God. The Word spoke and the world burst into existence. Jesus, the Earth is Yours and everything in it.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

EPIPHANY* Although the scribes could explain where the Messiah should be born, they remained quite unperturbed in Jerusalem. They did not accompany the Wise Men to seek him. Similarly, we may be able to explain every article of our faith, yet remain spiritually motionless. The power that moved heaven and earth leaves us completely unmoved. What a contrast! The magi had only a rumor to go by. But it spurred them to set out a long, hard journey. The scribes, meanwhile, were much better informed, much better versed. They had sat and studied the scriptures for years, like so many dons. But it didn’t make any difference. Who had the more truth? Those who followed a rumor, or those who remained sitting, satisfied with all their knowledge? What a vexation it must have been for the Wise Men, that the scribes who gave them the news they wanted remained quiet in Jerusalem! We are being mocked, the magi might have thought. For indeed what an atrocious self-contradiction that the scribes should have the knowledge and yet remain still. This is as bad as if a person knows all about Christ and his teachings and his own life expresses the opposite. We are tempted to suppose that such a person wished to fool us, unless we admit that he is only fooling himself. – Soren Kierkegaard, “Only a Rumor”

In traditional Christian churches, Christmas and Easter are celebrated as periods of time, or as seasons of the church year, rather than as single days. In Western Church Christian tradition, January 6, known as Epiphany, is the climax of Advent and the beginning of the season that leads up to Lent. Epiphany celebrates the arrival of the magi to worship the Christ child.

6,600 meals were served by our Mobile Kitchen — including 2,100 meals in Moore, Okla., where Northland’s Disaster Response Team was deployed for eight days last May when tornadoes devastated the region.

Together we worshiped God for who He is and what He has done at 250-plus live worship services. More than 32,000 people from 125 countries joined us for online worship.

Half a million different people

visited northlandchurch.net from 182 countries, including 71 people from Benin. All told, people spent more than 3 million minutes on Northland’s website. More than 100,000 people from 171 different countries — including Iran, Pakistan and Guernsey — visited Resourcewell.org, where we give away a free threeyear children’s curriculum.

1,476 lives were saved as a result of blood drives held at Longwood. We saw more than 120,000 interactions — Twitter mentions, Retweets and Facebook stories — from 81,000 unique users.

We baptized nearly 900 people this year, including 660 people during our big

1,215 volunteers from Northland and throughout the community packaged 159,000 meals for Typhoon Haiyan survivors.

The Disaster Response Team members overhauled their equipment trailer and added an on-board freezer. Now they can be self-contained and self-sufficient for seven or more days when they arrive at a disaster site.

347 people of all ages participated in 22 Distributed Journeys to other countries, including Swaziland, Egypt, Ukraine, Brazil and Cuba. Projects included helping with construction of a new church, and serving at orphanages, schools, feeding centers and medical/dental centers, along with providing AIDS care, education and ministry training. Attendance at Celebrate Recovery (CR) meetings totaled more than 7,000 for the year, including more than 500 newcomers. 60 people either accepted Christ or rededicated their lives to Him.

Baptism Weekend, 94 inmates at the local jail and 25 people at the beach with Student Ministries.

We welcomed and followed up with more than 3,000 first-time visitors at Longwood—including 1,800 kids at children’s church. A team from CR traveled to Scotland to work with heroin addicts. A church there is now starting up its own Celebrate Recovery ministry.

More than 100 “returning citizens” transitioning out of jail have been helped by the Healing and Transition (HAT) program, a reentry ministry birthed by Northland. 80 percent of those who graduated from HAT have stayed out of jail, and 70 percent were employed prior to graduation.

We started worshiping with the Ojibway Correctional Facility, a correctional facility located in Michigan that houses 1,200 men. This is the first time Northland has streamed live worship to a correctional facility outside the state of Florida.

22,377 pounds of groceries came during the Red Bag project, resulting in 3,834 meals that were distributed among food pantries in Seminole County schools to help feed homeless students and their families. More than 595 volunteers helped sort and package donations.

21,590 gift-filled shoe boxes were collected for Operation Christmas Child to be distributed to needy children around the globe.

369 people ran in our Northland 5K, helping to raise awareness of human trafficking. More than 1,200 people have engaged in practical ministry through our volunteer website.

Student Ministries discipled more than 220 high school students through SETup Crew (for freshmen), Servant

Leadership (for students in grades 10 to 12) and Wednesday night Discipleship Groups.

Northland’s Family Advocacy Office collected 655 CrockPots for Seminole County’s homeless families and taught classes on nutritional Crock-Pot cooking on a budget. 35 homeless families have been referred to Northland’s Family Advocacy Office. Volunteers have put in more than 1,000 hours walking alongside these families and connecting them with resources to attain self-sufficiency.

In middle school, each of the 350 students involved are matched with a high school leader so that discipleship can happen. 93 kids met the 10 Commandments Challenge by memorizing and individually reciting all of the commandments!

We have 27 church planters working in a major refugee camp in Sudan, who have planted more than 30 churches among Sudanese refugees.

Care Ministries helped hundreds of congregants in their healing journey through GriefShare, DivorceCare and other support groups.

Hundreds of kids accepted Jesus into their hearts at Children’s Church, and many children and babies were baptized and dedicated. The average weekly attendance for Children’s Church at Longwood was 877, with 375 volunteers serving each week.

70 leaders at New Life Church in Kyiv, Ukraine, were trained and are beginning to transition their small groups into distributed churches.

40 Northland counseling interns studying at the Reformed Theological Seminary conducted more than 7,000 hours of service, counseling people and helping them through life’s issues through a partnership with Oviedo Counseling Clinic.

Children’s Church offerings exceeded $12,000, supporting local and global missions.

80 Muslim students from 32 countries visiting Orlando to learn about other cultures and belief systems stopped by Northland to participate in a Q&A with Dr. Dan Lacich about the Christian faith. The bookstore began featuring products from such groups as Market Colors, The Latitude Store, Claro Candles, Ragamuffin and Work of Our Hands, organizations that emphasize fair wages and treat their artisans with dignity and respect.

More than 2,002 dads and daughters bonded at the daddy-daughter dance, with 150 volunteers serving at this annual event.

35 children monthly attended Buddy Break, a free respite program designed to give caregivers of kids with special needs a break from their caregiving responsibilities. FaithAbility, a Bible study and fellowship group for adults living with disabilities and their families and friends, kicked off in July, growing quickly to more than 40 members. A new sensory-friendly classroom was renovated in the grade school wing, allowing us to better serve our elementary students with disabilities and their families. We now offer three classrooms specifically designed for children with special needs and have Buddies available to help children learn about Jesus in an environment that best meets their educational needs. We trained more than 800 pastors and leaders from 17 countries, and helped plant 4,000 new churches around the world.

A partnership was established with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Eurasian Region, to train leaders in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Russia that will result in training in all of those countries in 2014.

served at the Central Florida Dental Outreach, organized by Greenberg Dental, and treated 283 patients, performing nearly $200,000 in free dental services.

Pastor Joel took a well-deserved sabbatical, during which the Lord “restored my soul and revealed a vision for Northland’s future.” During his absence, we considered what it means to reach out to our neighbors, asking God to make His character shine in us and to be people after His own heart during the “ZIP Code” preaching series.

1,665 folks from the church and throughout the community came out to the Family Fall Festival. 102 students attended Worship in the Arts Camp and put on an amazing program benefiting children and families in Haiti through the I Am Hope Club.

Longtime Northlanders Paul and Teresa McCaskill were distributed to Scotland, where Teresa is pursuing a Ph.D. in practical theology at The University of Edinburgh.

Hundreds of Bibles were collected by the bookstore for the homeless. We also purchased Bibles to send over to students in Ghana.

A team of doctors, physician assistants and nurses from Northland traveled to Ukraine to provide basic care for pastors and their spouses.

The Hub was launched in March, providing countless opportunities to connect to one another and to various opportunities to serve at Northland and in the community.

During the month of April, there was an emphasis on orphans, which marked the beginning of a new ministry at the church focused on adoption and fostering (northlandchurch.net/orphans). Many families have since signed up to be foster parents, and many others are exploring adoption as a result.

Great strides were taken to assist couples with their marriages. Hundreds of couples were impacted by marriage classes, including the Marriage Preparation Class, The Art of Marriage, Marriage Oneness and Marriage 911. The first cohort of the Antioch School was piloted for development of leaders who desire to continue their ministry and leadership education, focusing on discipleship and distributed church planting. Northland at Oviedo hosted a Change This World foodpacking event, where 80 people packed more than 17,000 meals. The Oviedo site also participated in the annual Christmas in the City outreach, which blesses more than 250 families with food, gifts, clothes and more. Northland at Mount Dora nearly doubled in weekly attendance year over year, with almost four times as many serving on volunteer teams. The site also launched new worship arts, tech, congregational care and guest services teams. More than $164,000 in financial assistance was provided through LifeHope, which serves people in need for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God. Recipients attend budget classes and participate in weekly worship and Local Serve projects. As of this year, a total of 9,947 people have been registered in the Resource Point database, which connects people in need with resources that can help.

Five ministers who have been serving the Northland community in various roles were ordained as pastors: Jeff Bell, who shepherds our Mount Dora congregation; Sean Cooper, who leads us in local and global service and equipping areas; Jeremy Jobson, who cares for our Oviedo congregation; Brian Katauskas, who leads Student Ministries; and John Tardonia, a licensed counselor and pastoral care minister who is shaping the development of our healing communities at Northland. Northland volunteers completed a documentary on Creation Care called “Our Father’s World” (ourfathersworldfilm.com). This resource is now being used by churches and groups throughout the country.

Witness How God Is Touching Lives in Egypt

gypt – the land where God instructed Joseph to take his family to protect Jesus from Herod’s massacre, and a country that was once predominantly Christian. Now only 10 percent of its people are Christians. Despite that, Egypt is considered by believers worldwide to be central to the mission of breaking the stronghold Islam has on the Middle East and, in turn, on the rest of the Muslim populations throughout the world. Could God use you to be part of His perfect plan regarding Egypt? Yes, He could – if you choose to serve on our 2014 Distributed Journey (DJ) to Egypt. This DJ is about strengthening and sustaining relationships both with Kasr el Dobara (KDEC), our partner church in Cairo, and with Christians in Egypt. We will be accompanied by members of KDEC throughout our trip and will serve with them in various ways. This year two serve days with KDEC’s Mercy Ministry team in Cairo are planned. While in Cairo, we may visit an orphanage, a children’s hospital and a facility for people with special needs. In the villages of Upper Egypt, we will spend time with Christians. We’ll visit them in their homes and possibly in

their churches and preschools. We’ll give them food and other practical items, hang out with them and pray with them. If we serve at a children’s retreat, we’ll share a Bible story, sing praise songs and do crafts with the children. We’ll teach them some health fundamentals, such as handwashing and teeth-brushing, and we’ll provide them with school supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other items for the children and their families. Flexibility is a key component of this DJ. We won’t know exactly what we’ll be doing until a couple of months before the trip; even then it could change. This trip is truly an adventure. A major component of this DJ is the privilege of witnessing how God is touching the lives of many Christians in Egypt through KDEC’s Healing Grace Child Sponsorship and Village Transformation Ministry. This ministry is dedicated to transforming villages by teaching the children about Jesus, ensuring that they attend school and get the help they need, promoting health, providing for families in need, and offering classes and retreats for children, mothers and families.

An especially unique aspect of this Egypt DJ is associated directly with the Healing Grace ministry. Many past Egypt DJ team members and other Northland families sponsor Christian children in Upper Egypt. We will visit those children and their families. Some sponsors will send along small gifts for their Egyptian families. We truly and very personally connect with them. Our 2014 team members also may decide to sponsor children and would get to meet them. In addition to our time of service, we’ll also do a little sightseeing and perhaps end the trip with a couple of days of relaxation and debriefing prior to flying home. We will only make this trip if KDEC and Northland believe it is safe to do so. Know, too, that if God wants you on this (or any) DJ, He will open doors to make it happen. SERVE LOCALLY Join the Prayer to End Slavery, Trafficking J

anuary 10 through 12 is National Weekend of Prayer to End Slavery and Trafficking. On January 11, Northland will be hosting the second annual Prayer Breakfast for community and church leaders. The National Weekend of Prayer exists to bring awareness to the issues of human trafficking in America and inspire people of faith to stand unified in prayer that leads to action. The National Weekend of Prayer started in 2011 when a group of abolitionists from around the country wanted to respond to the Congressappointed National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, on January 11. Early in 2012, such abolitionists as Tomas Lares, founder of Florida Abolitionist, and Dai Sup Han from Prayer Surge Now were inspired to launch the first National Weekend of Prayer to End Slavery and Trafficking. Since that time, they have partnered with organizations and denominations throughout the nation to educate the public and inspire prayer that’s focused on ending modern-day slavery. Through the unified efforts of mobilizers throughout the country, they have been able to bring considerable exposure to this injustice, witnessing the power of prayer as incredible testimonies of prevention, rescue and restoration come forth. With the annual weekend activities at the heart of who they are, the National Weekend of Prayer participants seek to place a year-round emphasis on the

issues related to human trafficking. Through empowering existing organizations, providing resources and training, and uniting the efforts of others in one collaborative grassroots movement, the National Weekend of Prayer is a nonstop effort to end slavery in America. Human trafficking is among the largest and fastestgrowing criminal enterprises in the world. Today, more than 20 million people are enslaved in the world. Trafficking exists in every state in our nation, in every major city and in many rural communities. In the last 10 years, efforts to eliminate or reduce trafficking have intensified on both a federal and state level, yet trafficking continues to increase. It’s morally intolerable that slavery still exists in America in the 21st century. The groups and individuals this effort represents believe that it can best fight this scourge of evil through prayer and wisdom from God. It’s fitting that people of faith exercise leadership in taking a stand against human trafficking. The participants in this initiative are asking congregations, businesses and organizations in every community in our nation to join together in this nationwide prayer initiative. They hope you will be led to participate, putting the power of prayer into action and helping free modern-day slaves, and even to offer redemption to the traffickers. iana Ludwig is a servant leader who has been faithfully serving on multiple projects with the Family Advocacy Office (FAO) since its inception, in March 2012. Her passion for children and helping others led her to serve with FAO. She is at home serving families that are in crisis, coordinating outreach events and helping out with administrative tasks of the office. She hopes the positive difference in the families that are served and the joy of giving help and hope to families in need will encourage others to serve. xciting news! We’re bringing two new prisons online for worship — Tomoka Correctional Institution, in Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Polk Correctional Institution, in Polk City, Fla. Fact: Of the eight prisons within a two-hour drive of our Longwood site, there are 11,000 prisoners. We would love for them to consider Northland their home church! Can you help? If you are located near (within an hour’s drive or so of) a Florida state prison, and you’re looking for a way to serve and see lives changed, then we’d LOVE to talk to you. This is a great opportunity for online worshipers to engage in ministry to other members of the online community. And couples are encouraged to serve together.

Responsibilities include setting up some equipment, welcoming the inmates, praying with them and caring for them as we would any other members of our church family. We also hope to get word to their families that they can worship online with their incarcerated loved ones. That way, they can discuss during visitations what they’re learning about God! Don’t live near Longwood? No problem! We can arrange for you to receive the training from a local correctional facility. Also, if you live near a jail or prison we’re not currently serving, and you’d like to help us bring worship to that facility, please let us know! Want to learn more? VOLUNTEER at Northland Volunteers Use Their Gifts to Make an Impact BY REBECCA LANG

“S

ure, I’d love to join the team!” I excitedly responded when asked. I knew what mobilization meant, but not in the context of God’s purpose for my life and expanding His Kingdom. I wasn’t even sure why God had called me to this role. I’d spent 17 years working for Gap. During that time, I led as few as two people as a product specialist to hundreds as a district manager. Along the way, God was using the interactions with customers and employees to hone my skills around finding what “needs” they had. Be it the best-fitting pair of jeans or the need to be challenged in their work, these conversations were building the foundation of my ability to effectively Sausage, anyone? identify what people were really saying. I was learning to truly listen, to “see the people” as Pastor Hunter mentioned in worship recently. Of course, at the time, I did not realize the path God was paving for me, and I certainly never thought that selling jeans and leading people was setting me up to work with an amazing team whose primary goal is to help others fulfill their call from the Lord through practical ministry. Coming off Dr. Hunter’s teachings about the church in Acts 2, we started off the year knowing we needed to create a platform that easily allowed folks to get involved through volunteering. So I spent the next few weeks meeting with ministry leaders and cataloging all the volunteer opportunities available at the Longwood site. We felt that for the congregation members to easily answer the call to get involved using their individual talents, giftings and strengths for God’s purposes, we needed to highlight as many opportunities as possible, and in one simple way. With that,

we launched the volunteer website January 26, 2013. In the first month, 400 congregants signed up to volunteer through the site. We were off to a great start! We spent time promoting the site in the foyer and The Hub. It was a blast seeing how excited congregants were when they realized how easy the site was to navigate and how many roles there were … more than 200, and nearly 1,500 opportunities to connect. We spent weeks explaining that opportunities to volunteer go well beyond the needs for our children, Communion or greeter roles. We built the site with the capability to filter by ministry or interest. Even if someone wasn’t sure where he or she wanted to volunteer, the person could find a role based on what he or she was passionate and gifted around. Throughout the year, we’ve seen more than 1,000 people connect through the volunteer website, and we are so thankful for every single one of them! One of our primary focuses has always been recognition. Let’s face it, volunteers give freely of their time to help Northland, many of them in addition to working full time or leading their families, or both. We wanted a simple way to show our gratitude. In June, we held our first volunteer appreciation breakfast. More than 500 folks came out for food, fun and fellowship. I was amazed by the generosity of so many individuals who donated food, time and amazing raffle prizes for the event – tickets to Disney and Universal, golf packages and more! We also tried to raffle off a pan of leftover sausage, but no one was biting. Ha! Our single biggest endeavor this year was the Northland 5K. I think God knew this was going to be a powerful connection for those in our congregation and our greater community. The 5K was a mix of our very own Northland family, runners from Longwood and the surrounding cities, and even folks from the extended community. In fact, we welcomed 22 UCF students from Delta Epsilon Mu, a professional pre-health fraternity, who volunteered with all aspects of the race. Seventy-five volunteers in all helped facilitate the run and Ministry fair, where 700-plus people participated in the morning’s events. Not only was it a time of connection and community; proceeds from the run supported the anti-human trafficking efforts of our local partner Florida Abolitionist. Our team still hears from folks who loved all that the 5K represented ... family, fellowship, connection and care for others. (But I’m not sure how many really liked the running part.) As the year winds down, we’re still in high gear! Our team has been diligently working on organizing Northland Christmas parties all over Central Florida. We are thrilled to see how God works in these gatherings, connecting Northlanders in their very own communities. Looking back, I couldn’t be more excited about all the ways God used mobilization to engage our congregation, encourage family and community life, and support our

church across all ministries. My favorite memories are of the moments when I sat down with new friends for coffee, listening to their stories. Maybe that’s part of what mobilization is – listening to people, hearing their stories and connecting them to their next chapter. We know God will continue to reveal that to us over time. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
