Dying to Cheap Grace James 4:1-6 (NASB) What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?

You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Worship focus Worship God today for His radical grace shown to us in the cross of Christ. Christ willingly gave His life for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for sin, once and for all. We are to offer our lives to Him as our holy and reasonable service.



Devotional Thought

This week, as we begin a new series on “Dying to Live: The Cost of Discipleship,” reflect for a moment on the word cost. Cost can be defined as an expenditure made to achieve an object — an outlay of resources, effort or sacrifice. We give in order to gain. The greater the gain, the greater the cost.

But cost, when applied to the gospel of grace, takes on greater meaning. At face value, grace is free. Jesus Christ purchased our pardon with His own perfect life and sacrificial death, once and for all (Romans 5:6-8). Grace is the ultimate bargain for sinners — a free ticket to feast at God’s banquet table. Isaiah 55:1 reads, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost” (NIV).

But grace, while extended freely, is not cheap. First Corinthians 6:19b-20 reminds us, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (NIV). Our physical bodies, our thoughts, our work, our time, our resources — all of it belongs to God. The mark of a true disciple is one who recognizes he can do nothing to earn or purchase his salvation, and as a result, he surrenders everything he is and has to God. How do you respond to grace? Is it a glorified safety net, or does it define and shape how you live? Ask God to impress upon you the cost of your salvation, and respond in worship to His radical grace.

Prayer We shall do as our Lord commands. We proclaim that our Lord Jesus was sent by the Father into the world, that he took upon himself our flesh and blood and bore the wrath of God against our sin.

We confess that he was condemned to die that we might be pardoned, and suffered death that we might live.

We proclaim that he is risen to make us right with God and that he shall come again in the glory of his new creation. This we do now, and until he comes again.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

First and Future Church

L

ast September, Pastor Joel shook a few things up at Northland. At the center of his emphasis was the need for our church to get back to its first-century roots. While God has always stayed faithful and worked in incredible ways over the last 25 years, Pastor Joel sensed a stirring by the Holy Spirit to get back to the New Testament mission uniquely given for the body of Christ.

Here we are, one year later, and more is becoming clear on just what God is doing all over the world. A reawakening is taking place not just at Northland, but with many of our national and global church partners. God is on the move, and the worldwide work of discipleship and church planting is coming back to the center.

Specifically at Northland, what does this look like?

In Church Distributed, Pastor Joel writes about the unique way that God designed the Church as a vehicle to change the world. What started in the first three centuries continues to unfold today: “As the movement builds, specific territories are put in the hearts of the sent ones (Acts 16:9-10) resulting in a network of churches sharing resources to better help people (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).”

One of the key questions our leadership is asking at Northland is this:

How do each of us link together to continue the expansion of God’s Kingdom?

A significant part of the answer is found in the book of Acts and Paul’s early letters to the Church. In this article are three images that provide a framework for continuing in God’s movement in the 21st century.

At Northland, the Great Commandment is central to everything. Why? In Matthew 22, a religious expert asks Jesus, “Which is the greatest commandment …?” Jesus’ response: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (vv. 36-40, NIV).

In addition to loving God and loving others, Jesus also gives instruction for all followers of Jesus.

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV).

Jesus gives an additional directive in Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (NIV).

The book of Acts and Paul’s letters then provide the framework for the first church and future churches.

When we read the narrative of Acts in the New Testament, we PAULINE see that Luke wrote with great CYCLE intent for the Church. The book is subdivided into six sections that repeat a pattern of work that the Holy Spirit accomplished through the believers. • Trustworthy leaders cared for believers (entrusting).

This worldwide work was the mission of every Christ follower then, and it’s the same mission for us today. You are an apostle of Jesus (someone who is sent on mission). There is a great deal of work ahead of us. This worldwide mission will require everyone to join the movement of God, this movement that began some 2,000 years ago.

Over the coming months and heading into 2014, we will begin to identify specific ways to involve ourselves in this great movement of the Holy Spirit.

In the meantime, here is what you can do: • Read Acts. Zero in on the way God unified the early church with one-mindedness. Look at the following passages, and discover how the Holy Spirit was moving and see the summary of each section of Acts: Acts 1:1-6:7, Acts 6:8-9:31, Acts 9:32-12:24, Acts 12:25-16:5, Acts 16:6-19:20 and Acts 19:21-28:31.

• Pray together. Look at Acts 2:42-47, and pray for Northland to have the same desire for unity. Think of specific people God has placed in your life – at work, at school, in your neighborhood, etc. – and continue seeking God and His heart for those people.

• Stay connected. Be purposeful in seeking ways to serve in the community. Look of ways to apply Pastor Joel’s preaching every week. Be ready and available for the opportunities that God presents to you.

Sharing Jesus With Children in Kenya 21 children commit their lives to the Lord!

y name is Ranwa “Nin” El-khoury, and I have been attending Northland since 2008. If you know me, you probably know my brother, Bubba. He is my passion and joy! I have been blessed with amazing opportunities to both work and volunteer with the special needs community, but just in the past few years, Bubba and Nin. I felt the Lord tugging on my heart to start serving other populations too.

I found myself on mission trips of all sorts, and for the first time ever, I found myself volunteering in Children’s Ministries with “typical children.” I started learning more about the Bible than I have in other settings. I was able to learn games, activities and ideas that I could transfer to other areas of my life. I watched children lift their hands high while singing how great our God is, and I experienced so much joy!

Every August, after summer camp work ends, I try to go on a mission trip. I have many reasons for going, but mostly I want to abandon my responsibilities, essentially give up what I have for a week, and wholeheartedly offer my focus to God to serve Him and His people in need. I wish I would do this all the time ... but I am a work in progress and am learning how to make every day the mission field.

Selecting a location was not easy, and I prayed long and hard about where I should be. When the idea of Kenya came around, I was instantly drawn to the idea of serving children who are in some difficult conditions. I found myself making a pros and cons list, and after discussing them with my boyfriend, he determined that all my cons were either worldly issues or simply not bigger than my God. Nothing is bigger than my God. At that point, the trip felt like an act of faith. I needed to trust God with every detail of the trip if I was going to commit, and I did (sometimes more reluctantly than others).

Ministry Conference Now for the big surprise! On November 8, Northland will host an all-day event. Families for Children is having a conference on engaging faith for foster youths. Families for Children will inspire and equip churches and families for effective, sustainable ministry to children and families touched by the foster system. Building on the success of the Christian Alliance for Orphans’ (CAFO) annual summit,

this first-of-its-kind event will provide a deep-dive focus on effectively serving foster youths.

Families for Children will serve three distinct audiences, with emphasis on specific models, resources and action steps for each: • Church and nonprofit leaders will learn from top church-based foster ministries, regional church networks and experts from across the United States.

• Families and individuals will build a deeper knowledge of how to wisely care for children and families, from foster care and mentoring to foster-to-adoption.

• Government and child welfare professionals will explore the most effective faith-based partnerships making a difference for children and families nationwide.

James: Please give us a temperature gauge of human trafficking and the efforts to fight human trafficking in the Greater Orlando area.

James: What are some of Northland’s goals heading into 2014 to fight human trafficking?

Dr. Gretchen Kerr.

Gretchen: It is reported that modern-day slavery is human trafficking and is a $32 billion industry affecting 27 million people worldwide, and is tied with arms dealing as the second-largest criminal industry in the world. There are more people in slavery today than during the trans-Atlantic slavery period. Most shocking of all, these victims are not only foreigners, but U.S. citizens, including children and adults from our communities.

Northland is actively involved in the fight against modernday slavery in several ways. First, as a member of the Faith Alliance to End Slavery Today (FATEST), a subcommittee of the Greater Orlando Human Trafficking Task Force, I am the co-chair of this committee, along with Tomas Lares from the Florida Abolitionists. Interested congregants meet monthly with 32 other churches to discuss the pressing issues.

Awareness is the necessary starting point, as so many are simply not aware of the problems in our own backyard. Each month there is training or we hear from experts throughout the community. The details are often horrifying, and the statistics, alarming. In 2011, Florida ranked third in the number of calls received by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center’s hotline, used as an indicator of the immensity of the problem. Here in the Greater Orlando area, the problem is significant, following closely behind Miami and Tampa.

James: Northland’s 5K proceeds are heading to the fight.

Which nonprofit are the proceeds heading to, and please share the beginnings of this partnership and its efforts.

Gretchen: ConnectCity is a 501(c)(3) that was birthed out of Northland in 2007 and currently provides leadership and oversight for the Healing and Transition (HAT) program.

HAT serves men and women coming from incarceration, and since many of the women may be discovered because of their arrests for prostitution, it became a natural segue for this ministry to expand into serving those who are involved in modern-day slavery. Through a partnership with Northland, Florida Abolitionist – a 501(c)(3), and the Faith Alliance, women rescued by law enforcement will be served by this established collaborative venture. Case management services will be provided by Northland in partnership with

Gretchen: The goals for the anti-human trafficking ministry will revolve around awareness and hands-on activities. The October monthly meeting will feature young adults from throughout the community interested in working together as a work group of the Faith Alliance subcommittee. Their energy and passion for this ministry are inspiring. Identifying and vetting ministries and organizations providing services to the victims throughout the state of Florida will be an ongoing endeavor.

The Internet has exploded with online ads for escorts. At any time, there are thousands of ads online, and we hope to establish a call center at the Florida Abolitionist office where trained congregation members will make calls to begin forming trusting, nonjudgmental relationships with these men and women caught in modern-day slavery. The ministry and discipleship opportunities are wide open. There are currently two Florida sites that have made over 2,000 calls so far this year. Training will begin in October.

Volunteers of all ages are needed.

We are praying for a team that will develop appropriate emergency and short-term housing for rescued victims.

Gretchen: The first step is to attend a monthly meeting. The Faith Alliance meets on the first Thursday of each month.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
