John 13:1-17 (NASB) Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.

Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”

For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Growing in Christ Children’s Ministries volunteers make big impact on little lives.

erving in Children’s Ministries for many years has given me many opportunities to experience and witness little lives being changed. I have watched children grow not only in stature, but in maturity in their faith. They start out as crying infants and in just a couple of years are excited to show off the crafts they make.

Before long they are making the decision to ask Jesus into their hearts, and their lives have been changed forever.

It takes time to teach our children the stories Jesus gave us in the gospel. It takes parents, other family members and people at church to teach children how much God loves them. It is a worthy and rewarding task.

I recently heard a story from one of our volunteers that is a great example of a life changed. She had a little girl who came to church with her grandmother each week. The girl was very sad because her mom had died and her dad did not live at home. Her grandmother, who is now raising her, continued to bring her to church. This child never missed her Sunday school class. The teacher continued to tell her she was loved and that God would never leave her.

Several years later, this teacher was sitting in service in “big church.” She whispered to her husband, “Look! This child and her grandmother are serving us Communion!” The little girl was so focused on the task, she did not see the teacher until she looked up to serve the bread. She smiled big and said, “Hi! It’s the body of Christ!” The teacher gave the girl a hug and told her how proud she was of her. The girl beamed from ear to ear. The small, broken child the teacher had met years before was now serving her. What a joy it is to teach this next generation who God is and what He has done!

Far From Home, Close to God What my summer internship taught me about God’s love.

he love of our God is so big and so beautiful. This summer, I got to experience it firsthand. My name is Emilee Jae. I’m 18 years old and just finished high school. I have a wonderful family, an incredible church community, the most encouraging friends and a loving boyfriend. I am immensely blessed, and although I’m young, I’ve had my eyes and my heart opened to some really incredible things.

I have spent the last three months serving as a summer intern with TIME Ministries in the Dominican Republic.

Although I have spent one week serving here each summer for the past five years, as this year approached, I knew God was calling me to do something more. I thought it was crazy. Three months in a country that doesn’t speak my language, doesn’t eat my food, doesn’t have my family or my friends, doesn’t meet my standards of comfort – it just seemed absurd. But I couldn’t drop it; the thought was constantly pulling at me. So I applied for the internship, thinking nothing would come of it, I would never have to think of it again. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Suddenly, it was June. High school was over, and while my friends were anxiously making plans for college, I was packing for my summer away. It all seemed so surreal until the morning of June 6, when I found myself sitting at the airport alone, waiting to board my plane. I called my boyfriend, and I cried, but as we talked, I knew wholeheartedly that this was exactly where Christ was calling me.

I could tell you the summer was easy, or that I adjusted within a few days, or even that I became a perfect example of Christ, but that wouldn’t be the truth. I can tell you, though, that God taught me a big lesson. It’s easy to say, “God loves you.” I think we often use that statement as a sort of bandage for those who are hurting. It’s easy to tell someone else that God’s grace and compassion for His people are enough. But it isn’t quite so easy to believe and accept that statement for yourself. I’ve always heard that God is love, but I didn’t really understand what that meant – that is, until I met the children in a small Haitian refugee community.

These children didn’t speak English, and to my dismay, they barely spoke Spanish. For most of them, their first language is broken Creole, one of the official languages of Haiti. I think Rachel was the first child to approach me.

She’s only 5, and she has the prettiest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. Jututu, Yohansen, Alberto and Ejendi played on the hill behind her. I had been mixing cement for the foundation of a new chapel all morning, but I longed to speak with these children watching us work. When I realized we could barely speak to one another, my heart ached. I wanted desperately to know these beautiful children and to tell them about Jesus. That’s why I was there.

Suddenly, I noticed the older boys, Ejendi and Alberto, tossing a plastic bottle back and forth. It gave me an idea that seems kind of silly, but at the time, it was the only thing I had to go on. Through a messy exchange of broken Spanish and hand signals, I asked if I could play, and soon the other children joined us as well. When you caught the bottle, you said your name. It was kind of awkward and

chaotic, throwing trash around in some weird game of volleyball, but eventually I got them all to speak to me. By lunch, they all knew my name. They shouted it from the hill, begging me to come and play. How could I possibly resist?

As the day crept on, more children joined our games.

I held so many hands, kissed so many dirty heads, and bandaged scraped knees and elbows – and my heart was filled to the brim.

I explained to the children what the new building beside the hill was. I remember telling them, “That’s God’s house, and He wants you to come play there someday,

His love is never-ending. Now I know that, and I want the whole world to know it too. The Dominican Republic may have been my mission field this summer, but now my mission field is here at home. Yours is too. As Christians, we’re called to love one another. Not just the other Christians, but everyone, everywhere. In our schools, at our jobs, in our homes, where we eat and shop and drive, we should always show the love of our Savior. That’s my call to you: Love like He loves, and know that His love is so much greater than we could ever imagine. Take peace in that, and carry it with you.

so He can be your friend too.” Because of the language barrier, I can’t say for sure that they all understood what I meant, but a few days later, when we returned to erect the little wooden chapel, all of my new friends were there anxious to meet Him. You see, that’s the thing about God’s love.

I served in almost 15 different villages this summer, and each village has its own story, its own children. In every village, despite the barriers, I was able to tell the people that God loves them so deeply, and then, best of all, I showed them. Those kids may never know it, but they were the purest form of God’s love that I have ever known. Poor, hungry, even naked children showed me that God’s love will always be enough for them and for me. Through Him, for Him, by Him, His love is abounding. It’s so immense, and it runs so deep within all of us.

The team completed this chapel as a place where a local community could hold worship services.

SERVING TO EMPOWER Interns Assist in Many Ministries A

s part of Northland’s master’s of social work internship program from the University of Central Florida, eight women are at Northland’s Care Center for 10 to 12 months.

Those in their first year of the social work program are in their first internship and are considered generalist, or first-year students. Those in their second, and final, year of the master’s program are clinical social work students.

We also accept bachelor’s in social work students, who will be here from January through April. The bachelor’s program is the “fast track” of the first-year generalist. After receiving a bachelor’s in social work from UCF, students will be automatically eligible for their second year clinical internship at a qualifying university.

During the internship, the students manage and serve in a number of ministries, including the LifeHope, Family Advocacy, Human Trafficking, Disaster Response/Local Serve, and Prison and Jail ministries. The students are here for personal, professional and spiritual growth, and they help walk individuals and families through various journeys.

Faith Alliance Fights Human Trafficking

he Prison and Jail Ministry at Northland is making a big impact serving congregations behind bars.

Each week more than 15 volunteers travel to various correctional institutes throughout Central Florida, where the volunteers have the opportunity to disciple more than 150 inmates.

Many new and exciting discipleship opportunities continue to be offered to the Prison and Jail Ministry. In our latest opportunity, we are forming a ladies softball team that will travel to women’s prisons for a day of sports and discipleship.

Boxes will be available in the lobby the first week of November. Pick one up, fill it with the recommended items, and deliver it to Northland during National Collection Week for the boxes, November 17 through 23.

Through your gifts, you would minister to boys and girls who suffer from war, poverty, disease and natural disasters by demonstrating the love of God. Operation Christmas Child distributes the gifts in nearly 100 countries,

and works in and through local churches where possible, offering children gospel literature and culturally appropriate evangelistic and follow-up programs.

D

id you know Northland probably has the best volunteers on the planet? When it comes to giving time and using gifts, our volunteers set the standard for others to follow. The way they serve our congregation is an amazing, real life example of responding to God’s call to be the church to those around us.

Knowing that words of gratitude aren’t enough, we held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on September 6. We had over 500 volunteers (and their families) join us for food, fun and fellowship. We had volunteers from children’s ministry, congregational services, facilities, jail and prison ministry come out and enjoy the festivities. We had raffle prizes that ranged from four 2-park passes to Universal, to a Northland gift basket to a “family night out” basket. It was a blast!

Dr. Hunter explained how our church simply could not function without the support of our volunteers. They are the “muscle,” as Dr. Hunter put it, and the driving force that will help move our church into the future. We could not agree more!

As other students in the class begin scribbling the words “God Is Dead” on pieces of paper, Josh finds himself at a crossroads, having to choose between his faith and his future. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have six grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke and Ava (2004-2010).
