— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them.

True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness.

We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done.

Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often.

Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life.

Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship.

Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you.

Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. The Eternal State

Do you have questions … about God, Northland or anything else?

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

What’s Your Next Step?

PRAY. GIVE. LIVE.

t was a year ago, last October, when Northland launched the Tipping Point Initiative! We made a commitment to take the next step to PRAY, GIVE and LIVE out the church in a very personal way.

“A tipping point is the idea that small actions contribute to big results. For us at Northland, it is a coming-of-age culmination of the vision that God gave this congregation in its earliest days. God is introducing a new way, and with us the new way is the fulfillment of the ancient way.

Now more than ever, we’ve got to have a heart and an outreach to those who are outside the institutional church.

As we continue forming the church outside our walls, while strengthening ministry inside our walls, we’re becoming part of something bigger than ourselves. This isn’t a program. This isn’t even a process. It is a matter of prayer and reinvesting our lives in a fuller way in the winning of the whole world to Jesus. Just as individuals are not replaceable, Northland is not replaceable. God has given us a unique place in the future of the church. And the best is yet to come.”

What are we asking each member of the congregation to do?

1. PRAY: Pray for the vision, asking the Holy Spirit what He is asking you to do in your commitment to Him and to His church.

2. GIVE: Take the next step in your giving journey.

• Start. If you are not currently giving to Northland, we are asking you to start. For first-time givers, the amount is not nearly as important as the act of trusting God with your finances.

• Be consistent. If you are giving occasionally, we are asking you to give consistently in proportion to your income.

• Tithe. If you are giving consistently, we are asking you to start tithing (10 percent of your income), putting God first before meeting personal needs.

• Give extravagantly. If you are tithing, we are asking you to give extravagantly as the tithe in Scripture was never intended to be the finish line and perhaps the Lord wants you to excel further in your giving.

• Finally, consider a resource gift, asking God if He is asking you to sell possessions or assets to propel this movement forward.

3. LIVE: Pursue this vision in your own life and the relationships around you.

What’s the goal?

We have a financial goal of $40 million over two years (2016-2017), but that is not the measure of success. The measure of success will be identified in two areas. The first is the number of people in the congregation taking the next step in their giving journey to see this movement of God realized, resulting in the spiritual growth of our people because of their sacrifice.

The second is the number of changed lives through the sharing of the gospel and the discipleship of believers in a growing network of distributed churches locally and globally.

What are some highlighted results so far?

• $1,596,659 in mortgage principal has been paid.

• More than 500 network leaders have received church multiplication training in such countries as Cuba, Egypt, Haiti, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Honduras, South Africa and Uganda. Through the collaborative efforts of these leaders, hundreds of churches have been planted in these countries this year alone.

• Northland has been integrally involved in community engagement and development projects. One example is the opening of a piñata factory in Costa Rica that provides alternative employment to prostitutes.

• Establishing a network of churches and faith-based communities in Central Florida to work in connection with the government toward “housing first” methods of fighting homelessness.

• An expanded Prison and Jail Ministry to reach new correctional facilities and a special focus on youth offenders charged as adults.

• Established Northland’s anti-human trafficking task force collaborating with the MBI (Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation) to assist in the rescue, healing and restoration of the most vulnerable in our community.

• The expansion of our local network of personal churches, which are the visible presence of Christ’s family in their neighborhoods, workplaces and networks of relationships.

• The establishment of personal churches on school campuses, including Lyman, Lake Brantley, Milwee, Seminole State College and more.

What’s next?

Watch for stories celebrating this halfway mark in what God has done in this first year of the Tipping Point. There also will be an opportunity for those who were unable to make a two-year commitment last year to join us in the movement with a one-year commitment.

The Treasure in the Chest: The Face of an Orphan

A

Northland team recently returned from a trip to Ukraine to work with Hope for Orphans, a Ukrainian team that ministers to orphans in their country.

The Northland team was struck by this statistic: Only 1 out of 10 16-year-olds who “age out” of an orphanage in Ukraine becomes a healthy member of society. The other 9? Oftentimes they are at a high risk of being trafficked immediately after “graduating” out of the orphanage at age 16.

The Hope for Orphans team seeks to teach orphans that God values and loves them, and to give them a sense of purpose by the time they go out into the world.

This summer, the team hosted a treasure-themed camp, teaching each child “You are God’s treasure.” At the end of the week, a locked treasure chest was opened, and each child was invited to look inside at God’s treasure — only to be greeted with his or her own face reflected off the mirror at the bottom.

Janet LeClair, one of the Northland team members, reflects: “I’m not asking [people] to get angry; I don’t expect [anyone] to take on a new concern, and I am definitely not asking for financial support. Instead, I’m begging you to go — go to Ukraine and love on these kids, go and tell them that God loves them and that Jesus is the only One who will never leave them.”

Miracle Centre Kawempe (Uganda) — Located in Kampala, Miracle Centre Kawempe was established in 2005. Gatherings began in a muddy parking lot, but over time, the church plant grew into what it is today. In addition to holding five weekly services, Miracle Centre Kawempe hosts leader and youth conferences, pioneers free community medical outreaches, runs a nursery and primary school, hosts outreaches for girls and women, oversees a radio ministry, and ministers to local police and inmates. It is a church that is living and fulfilling its mission to reach the world with God’s love in action!

The Christmas House to Serve Families in Need I

n 2015, Northland decided to serve families during the Christmas season a little bit differently. Last year’s Christmas House was such a success, Northland has decided to bring it back. By embracing the “When Helping Hurts” model, we are changing the way we help those in need in our community while serving them with dignity. We realize that although we have good intentions in serving those in need around us, sometimes we end up hurting them by disempowering them.

Keeping this in mind, we decided to engage in helping others in a more empowering and dignified way. Preselected needy families will pay a small fee to purchase various Christmas gifts — including large, medium-sized and small gifts — for each child. Parents will have the opportunity to wrap the presents at the Christmas House, and enjoy refreshments and crafts, if they bring their children.

Imagine the sense of dignity parents will have knowing they were able to buy gifts for their children! The Christmas House will be not only an opportunity for the parents to get gifts for their children, but also a way they can connect with our church body, other ministries and one another.

UCF Interns Are Here

T

he interns are here! Every year the CARE Center hosts a few University of Central Florida master’s of social work students to complete their internship.

This year we have seven master’s-level students completing their internship. During the internship, the students manage and serve in a number of ministries, including the LifeHope, Family Advocacy, anti-human trafficking, Disaster Response/Local Serve, and Prison and Jail ministries.

We look forward to seeing them learn and grow in the next 10 to 12 months. We look forward to seeing their professional, personal and spiritual growth during their time with us.

How to Get Involved You can help in two ways: 1. You can donate gifts to the Christmas House. We need gifts for children from toddler age to age 17. The Christmas House structure will appear in the foyer in midNovember, and fliers will be available with gift ideas. Gift drop-off will begin starting the weekend of November 26 through 28.

Join the Poverty Simulation

P

overty Simulation is a guided experience designed to help participants understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family, trying to survive. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their selfsufficiency on Social Security.

During the simulation, the task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities while interacting with various community resources staffed by low-income volunteers. Although it uses play money, props, fictional scenarios and time limits, this is not a game. It is a simulation tool that enables participants to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting, while empowering low-income volunteers by allowing them an opportunity to interact with leaders from their community.

y name is Ajoa, and I’m pleased to be joining the CARE Center team at Northland. I will work with the Bawili family as it continues its resettlement process in the United States.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering in different ministries before officially joining the CARE team, and I’m proud to continue to serve alongside such a wonderful, dynamic group of people. I’m looking forward to growing and learning here while serving those in the community.

My family and I have been attending Northland since 2007 and love it.

LIFE INSIDE A STORY

O

ne of my family’s favorite shows right now is NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior.” It’s a sports entertainment competition spin-off of the Japanese television series “Sasuke.” If you tune in to watch the show, you’ll see hundreds of competitors attempting to complete a series of obstacle courses of increasing difficulty to make it to the national finals on the Las Vegas Strip, in hopes of becoming an “American Ninja Warrior.”

My 7-year-old daughter, Ella Jay, is so infatuated with this show that her birthday party had an “American Ninja Warrior” theme. We had flying nunchakus, floating boards and even a makeshift balance beam built by yours truly. Guided by Pinterest and The Home Depot, we created a course on which no one was injured, and everyone made it through.

Shortly after the party ended, we were cleaning up, and I asked Ella Jay why she loved the show so much. Her answer floored me. Instead of going on about the Spider Wall or Cannonball Alley, she said, “It’s because of the people’s stories and what they’ve overcome. And it makes me want to be like them.”

Isn’t that true for all of us?

When we hear a story that moves us, we are inspired to do the same. Stories give to us the gift of understanding someone’s beginnings and struggles.

They have within them the power to move us from being overcome to overcomers.

Every one of us has a story, but sometimes our story is so hard to share. Like Adam and Eve, we find ourselves hiding because some part of our story seems less than impressive. We’re not left in this, although sometimes we can feel like this is the end of our story. But it’s not.

Jesus chose to come into this world to have a relationship with imperfect people, just like you and me. Jesus was born into poverty and later surrounded himself with fetid-smelling fishermen, prostitutes, tax collectors and liars. He was threatened with hardship and even knew doubt and fear. He didn’t have a mind-blowing house or even the best of friends. Yet He overcame the obstacle of the cross that the Romans created as an instrument of destruction so our story might not end in hopelessness. That’s the gospel, and that’s our story too.

When we fix our eyes on the story of Jesus, we’re freed to live inside that same story with abandon because it doesn’t end with the fall; it just leads back to the Hero who’s authored a story of relationship, redemption and restoration.

Not one of us is perfect! We’re all just fumbling toward faithfulness. But when we share our story, we move out of the basement of fear and into the family room of the Kingdom of God. That’s a story that inspires others, not because of who we are and what we’ve done, but because of whom we know and what He’ll never stop doing. And that makes us want to be like Him and just start throwing parties everywhere and every day.

Offering Update

During the month of August, children collected an offering to send to Military BibleStick, which provides Bible sticks (God’s Word in audio) to military personnel who are stationed overseas.

This is true! Ministers on Duty (MODs) are at the church daily and available to meet with you for prayer, biblical guidance or encouragement as you seek the Lord and His will in your life.

We believe Matthew 18:20, where Jesus says, “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst” (NASB).

MODs are spiritually mature Christians who love God and love people. We do not try to take the place of counselors or Stephen Ministers, but we do desire to encourage you through prayer and the Scriptures.

If you would like prayer or a listening ear, you are welcome to come into the church between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and one of the MODs will meet with you. If you can’t come in, you can call the church at 407-949-4000, and a MOD will pray with you over the phone.

PASTOR’S BIO During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Floridabased congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web.

Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren.

More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
