RESPOND TO GOD by Dr. Joel C. Hunter
Share Your Story D
id you know that our lives have been arranged so that God can tell His story through us? From the time that we become Christians, most of us are told to be witnesses for Jesus. As a matter of fact, that’s one of the last things Jesus said on this earth: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8, NASB). Not very many of us realize what that means. As a matter of fact, most of us have a misconception of what this means. We think it means forcing Jesus into our conversations over and over again. Don’t get me wrong; it’s great to talk about Him. But what is necessary for witnessing isn’t just your lip; it’s your life. I once asked Steve Douglass, the head of Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ), one of the world’s leading evangelistic ministries, how he witnesses and shares his story. He said, “I have three steps in what I do: I listen. Then I connect. Then I help.” I was kind of startled because nowhere in there did he say, “Then I spring Jesus on them!” LISTEN If we want to win people to Christ, we need to listen to their stories and hear what’s going on in their lives. That’s different from listening long enough to be able to talk about ourselves. The kind of listening I’m talking about is when we really are interested in people’s lives, and we’re listening intently to what they are going through and what brought them to this point. If we listen long enough, we’ll hear pain. We’ll hear regret. We’ll hear loneliness. All of us have had those times in our lives and can relate, and that’s exactly what people are looking for: somebody to say, “You know, I think I can relate to what you’re going through.” That’s our point of connection … CONNECT Then we connect our story with theirs, sharing with them how God has helped us supernaturally or surrounded us with people who loved us and cared for us. Remember, we’re not the main character in our story; God is. The focus is this: How did God enter in? That’s also the third point. That’s the help ...
HELP We don’t need to point people back to ourselves. We’re not the answer. We can’t solve their problems. We must take people to the same One who helped us, who cares for us, who loves us. That’s why our stories are so important and the activity of God in our lives is such a powerful witness. There’s a misconception that many of us deal with, and it’s this: “My life’s story just keeps happening, and it seems random because it’s not what I planned. Therefore, it just seems like chaos to me.” It may seem like chaos to us, but it’s not chaos to God. Proverbs 16:9 says, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (NASB). Many of us made plans for our lives, and they didn’t quite work out. Do we really think that was a surprise to God? Do we think our lives happened by accident? That’s not what the Bible says. God always places us in the right place for His strategic purposes. In the end, it’s not about showing people how much we know about Him. It’s about sharing our stories about how God is working in our lives. Psalm 139:23-24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way” (NASB). Why? So we can help others find it. Our stories are a part of His story. Great things happen when we respond to His call, not just with our voices, but with our lives. RESPOND If you have never specifically, personally acknowledged Jesus as the Author of your story, now’s your chance. Think of it as an altar call without the altar. Pray this prayer: Dear God, I admit that I’m a sinner. I’ve lived separately from You by some of the decisions I’ve made, and I don’t want to live there anymore. I know that when You died on the cross, Jesus, You paid for my sins. So right now I ask You to come and be Lord of my life. Live in my heart, and live Your story through my story. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ name, amen. If you’re praying this prayer for the first time, we’d love to hear from you and help you get started on your journey with Jesus! Eternal Bonds
Mission trips build stronger relationships with God, others BY KAILA TINDLE
T
he family trip to the Dominican Republic is an amazing experience for all ages. Whether you are a “single rider” looking for a safe trip to take alone or in a family of five, this trip is designed for you. Last year, we had a team of members from ages 10 to 55, including single college students and families of up to six. The organization this trip serves to assist is New Missions. The goal of New Missions in the Dominican Republic is to provide a Christian education to every child possible. New Missions’ fulltime missionaries work hard to instill Christian teaching in children who may otherwise be uneducated. The villages we serve include Bombita, La Cienaga, Redemption Village, Policlinica and Palm Village. Each has its own unique story. Bombita recently was blessed with a brand new New Missions school. Before this, school was held under a tent next to the highway. La Cienaga, meaning “the swamp,” is on the outskirts of what used to be a golf course. Redemption Village is a Haitian village, and they are considered “the dogs of the Caribbean.” In the Dominican, simply being Haitian is grounds for arrest, which is unfortunate because the people here are absolutely lovely. Policlinica was founded when a natural disaster displaced a nearby village, and the people inhabited a health care center that was under construction. Families live in what would have been exam rooms and have built around the clinic using anything they could find. Finally, Palm Village is a run-down apartment complex where these families are squatting. Many of the women here do whatever it takes to make a living and therefore have many children without any help. Although each village is different, they all welcome us into their homes with open arms. Think about it; would you? Preparation for the trip includes planning a Vacation Bible School lesson consisting of crafts, music with motions, and an interactive story time. Team meetings are designed to organize the lesson, but also serve to unify the team. Mission trips require an extensive preparation of the heart.
Essentially, you represent the face of Jesus when you walk into a village. Accepting differences and learning to love outside of your comfort zone are important qualities of any missionary, but these must be properly sought out. Learning about the country and knowing what to expect are also crucial to be prepared. To help, team leaders have been on the trip in the past and serve to make sure you are wellinformed before departure day. While the VBS lesson is a large part of what we do, the priority is to build relationships and love the children. Many families consist of struggling single mothers with multiple children. Unfortunately, the kids become responsible for taking care of their younger siblings at a very young age and do not get to fully enjoy being kids. Having mission teams come to play gives them the opportunity to feel safe and loved and just be kids. The children in the villages have a joy that is contagious. They may not have shoes or a clean outfit, but their smiles are their best accessory. Leaving their sweet faces is difficult each day, but having the pleasure of experiencing their laughter is worth the pain. It is normal to feel a bit of separation anxiety after returning home; some of us cried on the plane. Without knowing it, these children created a deeper relationship with God for the 23 people on our team last year. Attending church services is also an exciting part of the trip. Participating in worship in another language is very touching; it almost feels as if you connect with the Lord on another level. No matter the language, we share a common hunger for Christ, and it is powerful to interact with people who are equally passionate for Him, despite their circumstances. This becomes evident in the women’s ministry that we plan for as well. Having a night of fellowship with the women in the villages is a moving experience. Their stories are full of hope and complete reliance on the Lord. It is a time to teach us how to be Christians. The women made sure to write down our names so we can be included in their prayer chain. What a blessing. I still wear a yarn bracelet we made on the trip to remind myself to pray for all of my friends there. The country is full of beautiful people, but the children need our help, our example. It is a remarkable feeling to
know that when my time comes, I will get to the gates and see some of those gorgeous smiling faces. Our bond will extend into eternity. Not only do we get to share a connection with the people in the Dominican Republic, but the people from home who support us on our journey hold a special place in our hearts. Those people who helped support our team members, both prayerfully and financially, cannot imagine the impact they have made by supporting the mission team. Someday is today! Make a commitment to serve those who need it most. We can save these children from a future of bondage and pain by giving them the opportunity to know God. Believe it or not, the children on the mission team provide the most important example. As all of the mothers expressed this year, seeing their children love unconditionally is the greatest gift for which they could ever ask. My first trip changed my life, and I fully understand why God called me to enter the mission field. I urge you to listen for the calling God is giving you, whether it is to the mission field or not, because there is no other feeling like fulfilling His purpose. May God bless you.

SERVE LOCALLY FILL a bag FEED a child STOP childhood hunger BY EMILY TALLMAN
I
t is heartbreaking that there are children in our communities who go to bed hungry at night. The constant worry and lack of food affects their learning and development each day. We want to find ways to solve the problem of homelessness and childhood hunger. We look for answers and sometimes even people to blame for this epidemic. How can there be those who hunger when we have so much around us? How can we serve God by helping those who have such great need? Seminole County Public Schools experienced recordbreaking numbers of homeless students at the end of last school year. This crisis prompted local churches and organizations to come together to find new ways to help these students and their families. Through the collaborative efforts of Seminole County Public Schools and local churches, food pantries were set up in the local schools for these students and parents who are in need of food and basic hygiene supplies. It was through food contributions and volunteer efforts from Northland and other local churches that these pantries have operated and currently serve children and their families each week. The Red Bag Campaign began when these local

churches came together and wanted to provide opportunities for everyone in the community to be involved in this effort. And it all starts with a grocery bag! Fill a bag; feed a child; stop childhood hunger is an important community effort that many concerned congregants and citizens have come together to build. At the end of this article is a list of the items that will be collected for the children of Seminole County Public Schools who are in need. We want to make sure the items that are collected are appropriate for the age group to which they are going. It is easy to do. Pick up a red bag, take it with you to the grocery store, and buy the items on the list. These items have been carefully selected as what a child can easily carry home on the weekends. Each student who receives these items will bring the food home in a backpack, which will be refilled the next weekend. Each item you purchase and donate goes directly to the children and their families on the weekends. Food is so important and, of course, is something we all need. Whether on a special occasion or holiday, or at a family gathering, food shows love to others. For someone in poverty, food can become only about survival. The constant worry about having enough food for his or her family can overwhelm someone in need. God has called each of us to participate in helping those who are less fortunate than we are. Let’s face it, hunger seems like an overwhelming problem. Recent studies state that one out of five children in America struggles with hunger. These could be children who are in your children’s or grandchildren’s classroom, or even a next-door neighbor. Many families are struggling to survive each and every day. School becomes a safe haven for many children, as that is the only place they know they will have something to eat. The weekends can be a scary thought for many, as they may not have access to meals until school starts again on Mondays. We can come together and make a difference for these children and their families. By picking up a red bag and taking it with you to the grocery store, you can provide hope for these students. We cannot overestimate the impact of the simple act of kindness of giving a gift of food. It is amazing to see how a can of ravioli or a box of macaroni can show God’s love to a student.
The suggested list here provides a purchasing guideline. Please try to purchase 16-ounce cans or smaller so young children can carry them. Ravioli/spaghetti Canned soup Boxed macaroni and cheese Breakfast items (bars, cereal, oatmeal) Protein (beans, peanut butter, canned meat) Canned fruit Canned vegetables Packaged pasta Canned spaghetti sauce Snack/treat items Non-fat dry milk Canned stew Rice These personal items can be included: Deodorant Toothbrushes Shampoo Conditioner Toilet paper Other personal items GET YOUR RED BAG You can pick up a bag in the lobby of any Northland site after the worship services October 13, 14 or 15. Then, return the bag filled with items listed to any Northland site the next weekend. It’s that simple! Questions? About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
