What’s Current
Being a Person of Prayer A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR
Here’s a sampling of the many upcoming opportunities to respond to God.
(Read about Pastor Joel at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Stay informed about his involvement with current events at pastorjoelhunter.com.)
James 5:13-18 (NASB) Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.
DISTRIBUTED CHURCH INITIATIVE
Worship focus Worship Christ today as our Intercessor. He hears the prayers of His children and is always interceding for us before the Father.
PRAY Engage in conversation with God.
Dear God, silence all voices within our minds but Your own. Help us to seek and be able to follow Your will. May our prayers be joined with those of our sisters and brothers in the faith, that together we may glorify Your name and enjoy Your fellowship forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

THE DISTRIBUTED CHURCH From Adding to Multiplying BY LAURA YOUNG
I
n 1998, Dr. Joel C. Hunter cast a vision for our church — then Northland Community Church — to become Northland, a Church Distributed. It’s a name that more accurately describes our efforts to fulfill the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). This vision has unfolded in stages: The past 16 years ... • We changed our church name to Northland, A Church Distributed. • Dr. Hunter hosted the “Distributed Church” television series, interviewing local ministries and highlighting ministry opportunities outside our church walls. • We added worship sites at Lyman High School, West Oaks, Mount Dora, Oviedo and a number of jails, and house churches both online and offline continue to increase. (All but Lyman and West Oaks remain active sites today.) • Dr. Hunter wrote a book, Church Distributed: How the Church Can Thrive in the Coming Era of Connection, that lays out the vision. • We transitioned from being a church with a mission department to one that cultivates relationship development and is intentional about expanding increasingly relevant and effective outreach opportunities. We build church and ministry partnerships locally and globally. • In 2008, we built our current church building and housed within it technological capabilities that allow us to distribute our ministry and the ministry of others. • We made our worship services available online. As a result, groups and individuals are forming many additional worship sites. Where we are now ... Currently, we are focusing on a church multiplication movement that will happen by discipling people who disciple nations. We are working toward the goal of planting 1 million new churches around the world and will be much more intentional about making disciples and multiplying the church. Dr. Hunter desires to equip, empower and unleash each of us for ministry everywhere, every day. One way this vision is being carried out ... Significant church multiplication is taking place through an alliance we have with churches in East Africa (Kenya, South Sudan, Burundi and Uganda). We have been training pastors in these nations to plant and grow churches. They receive two levels of training with time between to implement what they learn. Their successes and challenges are reviewed at the next level. Level 1 covers The Life of a Pastor, Planting Simple Churches, and Understanding and Teaching the Bible. Level 2 consists of Understanding the Basics of the Faith, Making Disciples by Mentoring, and Reaching Muslims With the Gospel. Since fall 2010, when we began these training levels, the church in East Africa has multiplied beyond what we expected. As of the end of October, we have facilitated levels 1 and 2 training in each of these countries, training 500 pastors and church leaders. We also hosted a Training
of Trainers for 20 pastors and leaders. These trainers are now able to teach both levels to more pastors and church leaders in their respective countries. Each country also has a national coordinator of distributed church planting. These are the national coordinators and some of their progress: KENYA Dr. Rev. George Mamboleo Director of distributed church planting in East Africa Lead pastor of Antioch Community Fellowship in Nairobi, Kenya Global leadership consultant with Campus Crusade for Christ International (now Cru) Pastor Dominic Marabu Matunda National coordinator of distributed church planting for Kenya Lead pastor of City Community Fellowship in Kisumu, Kenya • Since October 2010: 255 Kenyan pastors have been trained on levels 1 and 2 • April 2011: 89 pastors returned to complete level 2 • Planted more than 350 churches • 3,550 have become new believers • 75 of those pastors have been trained by Kenyans who have become trainers Pastor John with Zion Harvest Mission in Kisumu shares: “It has been a challenge reaching people with the gospel, but [starting] the moment we began to show love and concern for our neighbors, we have seen a positive response. We realized that most of them are needy and need assistance, and decided to start two church gardens [to assist] most of our needy members with the foodstuffs from the gardens. We also decided to give a special offering every third week of the month toward assisting our needy people. As a result of this initiative of love, our membership has increased.” BURUNDI Rev. Sylvestre Hakizimana National coordinator of distributed church planting for Burundi Pastor of the Evangelical Church of Central Africa in Bujumbura • April 2011: 79 pastors trained on level 1 • October 2011: 52 pastors returned to complete level 2 • Planted 109 new churches and reached 1,511 new people • 31 more leaders are being trained on levels 1 and 2 by the Burundians who have become trainers SOUTH SUDAN Rev. Patrick Jok Ding Wic National coordinator of distributed church planting for Sudan and South Sudan Pastor of Juba Sudanese Reformed Church General secretary of Sudanese Reformed Churches in Juba, South Sudan • December 2011: 140 Arabic and English pastors trained on level 1 • April 2012: 87 Arabic and English pastors trained on level 2 • Planted 130 churches • More than 900 people have become new believers
UGANDA Pastor Robert Nabulere National coordinator of distributed church planting for Uganda Lead pastor of Miracle Centre Kawempe in Kawempe, Uganda • April 2012: 96 pastors and church leaders trained on level 1 • October 2012: 62 pastors and church leaders trained on level 2 • Planted 206 churches • 5,456 have become new believers • 1,207 lay leaders have been trained • Additional leaders have been trained by Ugandans who have become trainers. As you can see, the results of these training levels have been incredible. These pastors and church leaders are discipling people everywhere, every day! Our partnership with Cru’s GACM ... Along the way, we recognized we would be able to accomplish Dr. Hunter’s vision of establishing 1 million churches worldwide better in partnership with Cru’s Global Alliance on Church Multiplication (GACM). Through partnerships, the GACM objective is to establish 5 million multiplying communities and 5 million multiplying disciples by 2020 — to help reach the 5 billion people worldwide who do not identify themselves as Christians — and help fulfill the Great Commission in our generation. We became a vital, charter member of GACM. Both Cru and we are thankful for and excited about this partnership. What this means to us individually and corporately ... Let’s find out together along the way! We invite you to engage and respond in any of these ways: See and Hear Join us Friday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. in our Worship Center to hear from Dr. Joel C. Hunter as well as Dr. Steve Douglass and Dr. Bekele Shanko from Cru about the vision and partnership to plant a million churches. The national coordinators of planting distributed churches in East Africa will be here to share firsthand how they have adopted the distributed church model, and the explosive growth they are seeing! Pray ... • For our congregation to disciple people who will, in turn, disciple the nations. • For those nations to which God has called us, that those we have trained will continue to multiply this movement. • For the provision of funds needed to continue the equipping and multiplication. Be a Disciple Making Disciples • People you know — family, friends, coworkers • People you used to know • People you don’t know yet Contact: Pastor Gus Davies at gus.davies@northlandchurch. net or 407-949-4008, or Dr. Dan Lacich at dan.lacich@ northlandchurch.net or 407-937-1815

God Comes Along in Amazing Ways on Cuba Distributed Journey BY DUSTY COOPER
O
ur faith journey sent 15 of us to Cuba recently, and, as always, God showed up in amazing ways! The connection to the church and the people of God in this island nation has always been expressed to us by our partners as “vital for our ministry.” The journey in October made this even clearer to each and every person on the team from Northland. God gently nudged our direction and focus in a new and exciting direction, and we spent the majority of our time not on construction, but on teaching. Classes were held in the training center there to train leaders in congregational worship, worship for children, worship through dance/ movement and women’s ministry, and a new men’s ministry was started.
Our men did work on the training center facility, with the new church building reaching the final stages. We worshiped there with the new floors and lighting even though there was no front or rear door and no window glass in yet! God came down and touched us all in the services, reminding us that we are one people, one faith, and He is the one God and Father of all. The family of God in Cuba consists of amazing people of tremendous community, dependence on God, faith in His promises and love for others. Northland is blessed to have this connection to what God is doing so close to our own state, yet so far in so many other ways. Keep praying for your family in Cuba! Keep praying for your family in Cuba!
A new men’s ministry was started.
Classes were held on worship through dance/movement.
Worship takes place in the new church building even though it’s not fully constructed yet.

SERVE LOCALLY Sharing Faith, Hope, Love W
hen I began serving at LifeHope six years ago, I didn’t foresee how much God would develop and refine me through His ministry. In the fall of 2006, my youngest daughter entered school, and I was anxious to finally begin focusing on my career. I began applying for finance jobs, and I received a fantastic job offer. By Carol Davila, Yet something wasn’t right; God’s LifeHope Volunteer voice and inspiration were missing. I searched my heart and knew God’s greatest calling on my life was to continue to be an available mom to my three kids and faithfully serve Him in any way He’d have me. So I called the church and asked if it needed assistance in its finance department. I was told, “No, but we could really use some help in our benevolence ministry!” I grew up on the mission field in Papua New Guinea (my parents are Bible translators with Wycliffe), and I have a heart for reaching out to and connecting with people from all demographics and walks of life. This, in fact, is my passion. So I began serving at LifeHope alongside four others, sitting and praying with guests, entering data, making phone calls … whatever needed to be done. We also developed a budget class for our guests, and I began teaching the classes. The majority of people who walk through LifeHope’s doors are not connected in regular worship at a church, so the opportunity to minister and be God’s vessel of hope and love to them is immense! I enjoy praying with guests, encouraging them, loving them, bringing them into

community, teaching them how to be better stewards of their finances, and encouraging them to serve others as well. Benevolence ministry also can be challenging, as the needs are great, and the resources, seemingly limited. It is in these discouraging times that I seek His face and His encouragement. Faithfully, He renews my spirit, reminding me to be still and remain open to serving Him, and that I am His girl. His words encourage me to continue. I am passionate about the Lord and want others to be blessed by a deeper relationship with Him. Earlier this year, God placed a yearning in my heart to begin leading, equipping and training others for this ministry. I was restless as this yearning grew. Months later, Pastor Hunter beckoned the congregation to serve, and 75 congregants responded. I immediately saw the need for someone to coordinate and minister to all these volunteers! I now serve as LifeHope’s volunteer coordinator, coordinating volunteer schedules and training, and, most importantly, ensuring that volunteers are supported and connected. Serving the Lord at LifeHope has developed in me a deeper, more intimate walk with the Lord, a boldness of faith to pray with anyone anywhere and anytime, a sense of community and belonging at my church, and a deep joy to be walking in His purpose for me. I would encourage you to come and be a part of serving our community and sharing Jesus’ hope and love through LifeHope. Join Carol and serve at LifeHope! Orientation is November 14. Did you ever want to know who that voice is behind the fun puppets in Early Childhood Praise Time? For the past six years, Luke Fischer has been ministering to the children at Northland every week as a puppeteer, sound tech and mentor in worship for the 4and 5-year-olds. His creativity, faith and commitment have made him an outstanding example to all of us! Thank you, Luke, for your passion to serve using your many gifts and talents.
Why did you draw that? Giovana drew a picture of Paul’s shipwreck. We learned that God saved everyone on that ship just as He had promised. Paul trusted God even when it seemed impossible. We too can trust God’s plan no matter what is happening around us.

HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church. About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
