A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR (Read about Pastor Joel at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. Stay informed about his involvement with current events at pastorjoelhunter.com.)
Dying to presumption James 4:13-17 (NASB) Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Devotional Thought
There is an idiom that often was heard in the everyday speech of Americans back in the days when our country was more agrarian: “If the good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise ….” While the speaker was not always asserting a personal faith, this idiom does indicate a cultural acknowledgment that the events of our lives, and certainly the events of nature, are in the hands of God. It is believed that this idiom originated from the words of James found in this week’s Scripture.
Worship focus
It is easy for us to get so taken up with our plans and responsibilities, the busyness of life, that we forget whose goodness our plans, our very breath, depend on.
Worship God today for His goodness. Every good and perfect gift is from above. While we trust His perfect purposes, we must not presume upon them. Instead, we must remember that whatever He sends our way today or tomorrow is something He has promised to use to our benefit.
As disciples, our lives should reflect a thankfulness for God’s goodness and a trust in His grace, rather than a sense of entitlement to His blessings.
NOTES
How aware are you in a given moment or on a given day of your dependence on God and His goodness? Would a change in speech help to make you more aware?

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Harvest Prayer Whatever is foreseen in joy Must be lived out from day to day. Vision held open in the dark By our ten thousand days of work. Harvest will fill the barn; for that The hand must ache, the face must sweat. And yet no leaf or grain is filled By work of ours; the field is tilled And left to grace. That we may reap, Great work is done while we’re asleep. When we work well, a Sabbath mood Rests on our day, and finds it good. –Wendell Berry, Walking Meditations

Where Is Your Mission Field? BY KAILA TINDLE
A
call to the mission field is not on every person’s heart; however, those who are called have been handchosen by God. If you’re reading this article, that could be you. I challenge you to take the next step. Life is full of unknowns, and deciding to go on a mission trip is no exception. “Will I be able to raise the money? What if my passport doesn’t come in time? Who will watch my dog?” All are valid points. But remember, there is an enemy. Serving God and spreading His Word to the nations is our purpose. If the enemy can keep us from fulfilling God’s plan, he sure will. Traveling to a developing nation is absolutely lifechanging. I can remember being a little girl and feeling confused as to why God would allow people to be born into families without faith, or with other kinds of faith. It didn’t seem fair they wouldn’t have the opportunity to know God because of their surroundings. Now I know this is not the case in any part of the world. We are disciples. We are responsible. We carry God’s love to every inch of the earth to proclaim the Good News of God’s love, and in doing so, we give every human the opportunity to know God. All we need to do is plant a seed. It’s wonderful that we can serve others. It is mandatory. But it’s also in serving others that we comprehend the love Jesus has for us. I cannot imagine the daily difficulties these people face; however, I envy their undeniable love for Christ. And maybe we aren’t called only because we are to serve, but we are to be served. This realization is indescribable. I have brothers and sisters in all parts of the world – those I’ve traveled with and those I’ve missioned. It’s an amazing feeling to know that when I get to the gates, I will have so many beautiful faces to spend eternity with. That’s the ultimate feeling of hope. We have an unbreakable bond in Jesus Christ. Teams have gone on Distributed Journeys to all parts of our nation and the world. Many people have experienced the fullness of participating in a mission trip and can relate to these feelings. Those who haven’t been cannot comprehend. God wants you to be a part of someone else’s bigger picture. All you need is a willing heart, and He will take care of the rest. Take the next step. Find out more. Pray continually, and ask God to lead you where He desires. Your mission field could be in your backyard, but if it isn’t, listen to where He is calling you. It means the world to others.

SERVE LOCALLY Christmas and YOU BY LIFEHOPE TEAM
C
hristmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ. It is a time of giving and receiving, and a time of joy. For hundreds of families in Central Florida who are experiencing unemployment, the loss of jobs and other crises, it can be a time of stress and even fear as they try to explain to their children why there will be no gifts for them. This year we are doing things a little differently, and we need your help. As disciples, we can all serve others in various ways. Do you want to purchase a gift for someone else? Do you want to give of your time? Do you know a family in need? We have opportunities for you! Once again, we are partnering with Christian HELP and its Dove Tree Christmas gift program. We encourage you to select a dove from the tree to help a child have gifts for Christmas. The Dove Trees will be in the Longwood site’s lobby from November 29 until December 16. During this time, you can pick up a dove card, purchase one of the suggested gifts, and return it to the tree the next week. We also would love for you to participate in the Local Serve Day project with Christian HELP to distribute Dove Tree gifts. Sign up for these teams at northlandchurch.net/ serve. Distribution will take place on December 17, 18 and 19 during the day.
Servant Leader of the Month
E
laine Donnellan has been serving at Northland since 2008. She dedicates much of her time to Local Serve projects, the Healing and Transition program, the Prison and Jail Ministry and the Celebrate Recovery leadership team. In addition, you will find her singing with the worship band Broken on Friday nights at Celebrate Recovery. Thank you, Elaine, for your dedication and leadership.
If you or someone you know is in need of help this Christmas, please go to the Northland LifeHope website (lifehope.northlandchurch.net) and complete the application labeled Christmas Gift Help. Each request will be reviewed for eligibility by the Northland LifeHope team. We understand the community need is significant, and our desire is to help as many families as possible. For more information about Christian HELP, visit its website, at christianhelp.org. For information about the Dove Tree program at Northland, contact Judy Head at 407-937-1744 or judy.head@northlandchurch.net. Operation Christmas Child Help a child experience Christmas!
T
he Operation Christmas Child season is upon us, and once again you have the opportunity to bless children around the world by bringing your gifts to Northland. National Collection Week for the shoe boxes filled with gifts is November 18 through 25. Through your gifts, you would minister to boys and girls who suffer from war, poverty, disease and natural disasters by demonstrating the love of God. Operation Christmas Child distributes the gifts in almost 100 countries, and works in and through local churches where possible, offering children gospel literature and culturally appropriate evangelistic and follow-up programs. You can help by delivering a completed shoe box to Northland during collection week. You also have the opportunity to serve by helping with the collection of boxes at Northland. Children 13 years and older accompanied by an adult are welcome. For more information about signing up to help with collection, visit serve.northlandchurch.net, and click on “serve locally,” or contact Judy Head at judy.head@northlandchurch.net or 407-388-5798.

VOLUNTEER at Northland 5K Benefits Anti-Human Trafficking Cause BY JAMES LI
W
e are so thankful for the opportunity to have hosted the Northland 5K Run/Walk. It has been a great opportunity to connect the Northland congregation to the community and to the fighting of the social injustice of human trafficking. Here are the stats: • 369 people ran in support of the anti-human trafficking cause. • More than 750 people came out to run the 5K, cheer on a friend or family member, or learn more about the many connection points Northland has to offer. • Nearly 75 children participated in the Kids Dash, and thankfully there were no boo-boos. • We had 32 ministries represented at the Ministry Fair, and lots of connections were made. • Finally, we had close to 80 volunteers who helped make the 5K and Ministry Fair a success. We could not have done this without them!

HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church.
