A MESSAGE FROM DR. DAVE ROEVER (Read about Dr. Roever at daveroever.org.)
TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH Philippians 1:12 (NIV)
Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.
Worship Focus Worship Christ today for His sacrificial love. He came as the atoning Sacrifice for our sins. We have been made holy through the sacrifice of His body once for all. In response to this love, we can present our bodies as living sacrifices for the benefit of others. Prayer
Son of David, You entered Jerusalem with a triumphal procession that left You alone and in humiliation on the cross. We thank and praise You for Your selfless sacrifice … for the redemption of creation … for those who offer their lives in Christlike service around the world … for Your work as it continues in our community … for the sacrificial love of those who serve us in Your name … for our redemption. – Adapted from The Worship Sourcebook
Notes
One secret act of self-denial, one sacrifice of inclination to duty,
is worth all the mere good thoughts, warm feelings, passionate prayers, in which idle people indulge themselves.
– John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)
Man
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)
OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.
OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE
A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.
OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO
At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worship God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Read the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Share your story — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Be in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Pray — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serve others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Live generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.
We believe that as we respond to God together we will be transformed into the image of Christ.

The Church
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

Doing Christmas Parties a Little ‘Differently’ T
hroughout the last year, the Northland family has been gathering throughout Central Florida for neighborhood parties. And it has been awesome! We’ve connected with other Northlanders who (surprise!) live right down the street from us. We’ve swapped stories, shared meals and caught a glimpse of what it looks like to be the church everywhere, every day. Now we’re excited to announce this year’s Christmas parties because this time, we want to do things “a little differently,” as Pastor Vernon likes to say. This Christmas, we’re hoping that hundreds of you will host Christmas parties—opening up your homes to other Northlanders who live near you, and also being much more intentional about inviting those who aren’t yet included in God’s family. This could be your friends, neighbors, family or coworkers. A Christmas party is one of the easiest places to bring up Jesus, talk about our spiritual journeys and invite others to join us. This could mean inviting them to a Christmas Eve service, or to check out a Bible study or a First Principles group. Basically, we’d love to see hundreds of Northlanders step up and say, “OK! I’m going to have a Christmas party, and I’d be willing to bring up Jesus a little more intentionally than I have before.” Interested? All it takes is a willing heart. More details are on page 6. Not able to host a party? No worries! Even though we’re looking for hundreds of hosts, we’re counting on EVERYONE to bring someone to a party. As Pastor Joel has been preaching for months, the distributed church is all about “us for them, there.” So for hosts and attendees alike, this is a great opportunity to invite “them” into community.

Ministry Shares Jesus With Muslims BY DR. DAN LACICH
F
or three years, we have been in a partnering relationship with Way of Life Ministry in Bangladesh and our brother Jatish. The ministry began several years ago and focuses exclusively on sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with Muslims. Since the start of its work, the ministry has planted more than 10,000 house churches in Bangladesh and spun off two more ministries doing similar work. We have helped this ministry by training its area leaders as well as several hundred of the house church leaders. Many of the area leaders are former imams who have begun to follow Jesus. Instrumental in the work they are doing is that new followers of Christ begin to tell others of their faith right away. Everyone who is a follower of Christ is expected to share his or her faith and reach at least five others as soon as possible. We also support four missionary church planters who are sharing the gospel and starting churches full time. The cost to support them is only $100 per month. They are taking the gospel to places that have not yet been reached by the gospel. It is not unusual for them to find people who have recently had dreams about Jesus or other miraculous encounters and who are looking for someone to tell them about Jesus. This is our most recent letter from Jatish, giving an update on the work in Bangladesh.
big loss. Finally, he failed in business and owed money to the people and could not pay. In this situation, [he] hid himself from the people he [owed] and was not able to sleep in his own house. One day he met our missionary at a tea stall and listened to him talk about Jesus. While he was listening, he found some peace in his heart. Later he met the missionary again privately. The missionary brother began to share the gospel from the Bible. He was reading from the Gospel of Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV): “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He said listening [to] the words, he felt somebody talking into his heart, and he immediately made [the] decision and accepted the Lord as Savior.
Disciple-making meeting.
Since then, he said he began [to] see new hope in his life even though the situation was the same. A few weeks later, he received a call from one of his relatives that they all became owners of a valuable property. This was completely unexpected. By selling the property, he received a large amount of money, started a new business and paid the loans to the people he owed. He said his personal life and his family are in complete peace in Jesus. In the six months since he started following Christ, he has led 62 people to Christ and planted 11 house churches. Praise God.
Greetings to you in the Lord’s name from Bangladesh! I’m happy to [share with] you that recently I visited the four church planters who are supported by Northland church. I visited some house churches they have started and met new believers and the house church leaders. The four church planters had a goal of planting 400 new churches in 2014. We believe they will exceed that goal and get closer to 500 new churches. Currently, they have planted 344 churches, baptized 2,365 new believers and reached 1,032 families. Our total ministry goal for this year was to plant 3,000 house churches, and [we expect] to reach the goal as the Holy Spirit leads our people. The reason for the tremendous growth is the disciples. The new disciples are making more disciples and planting churches that multiply and plant other churches. We do not wait for them to get lots of training to be able to reach others for Jesus, but immediately ask [whom] they know who also needs Jesus, and together we share the gospel with them. In this way, they learn how to share Jesus with others. We challenge the new believers that every disciple should go out and make at least five new disciples, and that results in huge fruit in the ministry. Everybody gets involved doing ministry, sharing the gospel, and making the disciples for Christ. Here is a testimony that is typical of the people coming to faith in Jesus: A brother named Suman is 41 years old, married and has two children: one son and one daughter. He came to the Lord six months ago. Suman was born into a rich Muslim family and followed Islam faithfully. He had a good business with a big investment of money, and everything was going well. But the last two years, his business [went down], and in reality he found the result as

SERVING TO EMPOWER Join the Adoption and Foster Ministry M
ore than 143 million orphans exist worldwide. The time for God’s people to get involved is now! The Bible presents adoption as a positive, gracious act that is part of God’s plan. Moses was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, and his adoption was part of God’s overall plan for the deliverance of Israel from Egypt (Exodus 2:1-10). When Esther’s parents died, Mordecai, her cousin, took her as his own daughter and adopted her (Esther 2:15). This adoption also led to a wonderful deliverance of the people of God! Joseph, who raised Jesus as his own, was not His biological father. Joseph gladly accepted Jesus, providing Him with all the love, encouragement and guidance a son needs from a father (Luke 1-2).
The Bible tells us there is only one way for us to enter the Kingdom of God: We must become God’s adopted children through Jesus Christ. “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves” (Ephesians 1:5-6, NIV). If you have ever thought about adopting or fostering a child, or just want to learn more about how you can help these children, join us in Northland’s Adoption and Foster Ministry. The Adoption and Foster group meets the third Thursdays of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Prison and Jail Ministry Studies
Dove Tree Project
M
any incarcerated parents have not had contact with their children for 5, 10 or even 15 years, often creating a generational pattern of crime and abuse. Northland’s Prison and Jail Ministry is working to bring two studies that use Scripture to help break these patterns: Hannah’s Gift, for mothers, and Malachi Dads, for fathers. The 10-lesson Hannah’s Gift uses the prophet Jeremiah’s words and warnings to help incarcerated moms prepare to build healthy family structures upon their release. Malachi Dads challenges Christian men and teaches them how to grow into godly dads, equipping them to spiritually train their kids regardless of their circumstances and intentionally build a legacy of faith in Christ. The program develops their skills in five key areas: parenting, spiritual, educational, moral and vocational. For more information on these studies or Northland’s Prison and Jail Ministry, contact Dale Cowart at 407-9497165 or dale.cowart@northlandchurch.net.

Faith Alliance Works to End Human Trafficking
N
orthland has the great opportunity to work with organizations across the community that are working together to end human trafficking. These organizations include The Greater Orlando Human Trafficking Task Force along with its local partners and ConnectCity. While Faith Alliance mobilizes efforts in the faith-based community, ConnectCity works directly with individual victims and survivors. In October, a team of Northlanders attended the Human Trafficking Summit in Tampa, as well as the Thistle Farms Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The Human Trafficking Summit heightened awareness
of the violence and volume of the brutality experienced by human trafficking victims, as well as the necessity for advocates. Thistle Farms shared the great impact folks there are able to have in the lives of survivors through love and community support. Northland is eager to share information learned from professionals working for similar causes through educating partners in the local community and expanding relationships that allow for greater impact. For more information about the Faith Alliance, contact Dale Cowart at 407-949-7165 or dale. cowart@northlandchurch.net.

Top 10 Questions About Hosting a Northland Christmas Party Thinking about hosting a Christmas party? Great! Here are answers to the most common questions we hear. Got a question not covered here? Email hub@northlandchurch.net.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Q: Does Northland provide anything to help me plan a party? A: Yup! We’ve prepared a Christmas Party Pack (tool kit). It even comes in a big red box with a silver bow. Q: How will Northlanders learn about my party? A: Northlanders can find parties (including yours) at northlandchurch.net/neighbors. When people sign up for your party, we’ll let you know so you can connect with them directly and give them more details. Q: Can I invite people who don’t attend Northland? A: YES! In fact, these Christmas parties are all about being “us for them, there.” Start with your neighbors, your coworkers and your family. If Northlanders show up, then consider it a bonus. Q: What should my party look like? Should I have activities planned? A: Honestly, it’s totally up to you! Your Christmas Party Pack will include fun ideas you can use, but don’t feel obligated to use them. Q: How long should my party be? A: We find these parties work well when you open your home for a few hours so people can just drop in. Q: Should I wear an ugly Christmas sweater? A: Umm … that’s optional. You make the call. Q: Which Christmas album should I play? A: Again, your call, but may we recommend The Don Ho Christmas Album? Q: What kind of food should I serve? A: These parties are designed to be potluck-style, so you’re free to ask guests to bring something specific, or you can ask them to bring their favorite holiday dish and look forward to the surprise and variety. Q: Do I need to be a longtime Northlander to host a party? A: Nope. This is an opportunity to take a first step toward connecting the people in your life more fully to Jesus. You don’t need any spiritual pedigree to tell people about Jesus, and you don’t need any Northland tenure either. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been with Jesus for a short while or a long time. If you’re excited about telling people about Jesus AND you love getting together with others, you should host a party!

Q: I want to host a party! What’s next? A: Stop by The Hub after service, and we’ll help you get started. You also can connect with Rebecca Lang at 407-937-1807 or hub@northlandchurch.net.

PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 20,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. The Hunters are parents to three sons: Joshua, Joel and Isaac (1977-2013), and are in-laws to Lisa, Lizzy and Rhonda. The Hunters have seven grandchildren: Noah, Jada, Ella, Lincoln, Luke, Lena, and Ava (2004-2010). Learn more about Pastor Hunter’s life in ministry at northlandchurch.net/joelhunter. HOUSE CHURCHES Even though Northland is what could be called a “megachurch,” we are committed to helping others do church on as small a scale as a few people in a home. That means we want to bring resources and encouragement, and training for ministry to people where they live, and work and play. The house church allows that to happen anywhere in the world. Visit northlandchurch.net/housechurch for an introductory video from Dr. Hunter which will help you learn more about starting a house church. For more videos on how to build a simple church, so that you can effectively gather with others to transform your community, visit www. doingchurchsimply.com.
