RESPOND TO GOD by Dr. Joel C. Hunter PaRT 3: sERVE oTHERs

Russian philosopher, Nikolai Berdyaev, said this: “Bread for myself is a material question. Bread for my neighbor is a spiritual one.”

You cannot pay attention to other people without seeing a spiritual transformation in your own life.

Serving others is a response to God’s grace, and it’s absolutely necessary if you ever want to have more of a relationship with God than a fleeting moment of closeness from time to time. Jesus said this about Himself in Matthew 20:28: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (NASB). When we serve others, we’re conforming ourselves to the image of Christ and moving from an earthly mentality to a heavenly one.

I’ve heard talk that people can become “so heavenly minded they’re of no earthly good.” But I’ve never seen that because quite frankly, the people

who are doing the most good on earth are doing it in order to show their faith. As a matter of fact, James 2:17-18 says that “faith, if it has no works, is dead” (NASB).

When we do good works, we’re not earning our salvation. (We don’t earn salvation.) Rather, we’re following the new nature that has been implanted in us by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. It’s about bringing heaven to earth. Why? Because Jesus didn’t come just to get us into heaven. He came to get heaven into earth through us! “Thy kingdom come … in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10, KJV).

We are called to a life of sacrifice. The Bible says in Romans 12:1, “I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship” (NASB).

I want to challenge you with this: The greatest impediment to spiritual maturity that I see in our society is “consumer Christianity.” That means we have just enough to want more and will be happier if we have more. So even when we are asked to give a little, we hold back because we worry that we won’t have enough.

If we’re not careful, we will be swept up in the values of the culture, and we’ll be taken to a place where we don’t want to go. You’ve probably heard me tell this story before, but it bears repeating: There was a peaceful, prosperous and loving Indian tribe that lived near a river. That river gave the people of the tribe clean water and a source of food for all but two times a year, when the river turned into a raging torrent due to snow melting on the mountain. Nobody could stand in the current no matter how strong the person was.

It was during one of those seasons that they were attacked by a fierce rival tribe. It was apparent in the first hours of battle that even their strongest warriors would not be able to withstand the onslaught. Night fell, and this peaceful and formerly prosperous tribe had all night to deliberate what it was going to do. The people of the tribe were all gathered around the campfire, all of them, not just the chief and warriors, but the women and the children and the elderly.

Somebody said: “I think we have only one chance of survival, and that is if a few of our strongest warriors cross the raging river. If somehow a few of them get across, then at least a part of our tribe could go on living.” But the warriors stood up and looked around that fire and saw the sick, the elderly, the children .... They couldn’t bear the thought of surviving at the cost of those lives.

So the warriors said: “We will go out into the river. If we die, we all die together.” So every one of those warriors picked up an elderly person, a sick person, a couple of children, and they waded out into the current.

You know the end of this story already, don’t you? Not one of them died because the weight of those they carried gave them the gravity to withstand the current that ordinarily would have taken them to their deaths.

It is the weight of the weak that saves the strong. Use your strength to carry somebody who doesn’t have it.

Pray with me: God, thank You for the example of Jesus Christ, who was emptied of all strength so that He could be strength for all of us, who would not leave any behind no matter how unworthy, no matter how weak. So Lord, give us that spirit, and send us out to serve others in Your strength and with Your heart. Amen.

eople in need are all around us. We hear so many stories on the news and in our communities of families and individuals that are facing situations they never dreamed would happen to them. Chances are, the person sitting to the right or left of you in church has a need he or she has not shared with someone else. It is sometimes overwhelming to think about so much loss and need. The biggest struggle we have when helping others is our own feeling of helplessness in knowing what is needed or what to do to help others who are in need.

At Northland, we have resources to help equip you and our congregation with the tools to serve those in need in our community.

Resource Point, our online database of resources, began as an answer to the growing needs of Hurricane Katrina victims. We have learned in Florida that in times of disaster, we can form a community that serves one another in seconds flat. With a common purpose and an understanding of what is needed, we can help our neighbors around us get their lives back together. It was in these moments of disaster that the model of helping others was developed.

Knowing that we each have or will experience “everyday disasters” of our own, it is important that we think about how we can serve one another in the same way we would if there had been a hurricane or other natural disaster. Resource Point gives guidance and provides the link to resources that are an answer to many everyday needs. Whether you are looking for a local food pantry, mental health resources, a support group or even a sofa, Resource Point is the place to start.

Want to volunteer your services to a local organization or another congregation member? Have something you want to give, such as household items or furniture? You can search for that, too, through our Web-based search portal at resourcepoint.org.

If God has called you to serve others with your talents and time, there will be numerous ways to plug in. We have established a Case Manager Academy, open to all levels of expertise to equip anyone who is interested in walking alongside a homeless family to help it on its journey back to self-sufficiency. People of all levels of experience are encouraged to participate.

An information session about the Case Manager Academy is set for November 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Seminole County Public Schools’ Educational Support Center, 400 E. Lake Mary Blvd., Lake Mary.

As we move forward on our journey to help others in need, here are three practical ways you can get involved:

1. Know. Get to know someone in need. Listen to what is going on in this person’s life, understand what the person’s needs are, and show God’s love to him or her.

Each of us has been called to love one another. We are all qualified to listen to and pray for one another. We do not need special training to bring someone to God in prayer.

One way you can get to know someone in need is by signing up to be a Seminole County Public Schools Dividend, or volunteer, at Hamilton or Idyllwilde elementary schools to do one of these things: • Distribute food on Fridays to participants in Seminole County’s Families in Transition (FIT) program.

• Mentor a child.

3. Go!

If God leads you, become an advocate for a family or individual as this person or these people work through their plan and walk toward self-sufficiency. Whether you are a social work professional or simply someone who wants to learn more about this process, God can use you to help someone in need. To learn more about being an advocate for a family in need, visit resourcepoint.org and make plans to attend the aforementioned meeting November 17.

Together we can serve our community. Each one of us has been called to love our neighbors in need, whether it is through listening, praying, donating or serving. We can make a difference by doing our part.

2. Show.

Using Resource Point and other tools, show someone in need where he or she can go to get help.

Educate yourself about how different resources work and how to direct someone to a place where the person can go to get his or her needs met. Go to resourcepoint.org, and click “I Can Help” to access the Community Tool (charitable organizations) and The Common (people helping people).

One way to equip yourself to show someone in need where to go to get help is by learning a little more about the tools available. If you are interested in an overview of these tools, training sessions will be available these dates for learning more about Resource Point, The Common and the Community Tool: Sunday, November 20 at 5 p.m.; Saturday, December 10 at 5 p.m.; and Monday, January 23 at 10 a.m. Each will take place in room 4205 at Northland’s Longwood site.

seRve GloBallY Cares Teams Share Life-Changing Experiences

W

e have been attending Northland for six years and love being part of a church that is service-driven!

Pastor Joel has been talking about finding ways to respond to God in service with our lives. We prayed about what that meant for us as a family, and God directed us to an organization called Apartment Life, a nonprofit that specializes in community-building.

We are now Apartment Life area directors out of Northland. This job gives us the opportunity to train, shepherd and care for teams that live in apartment communities, or what we affectionately refer to as Cares Teams. We work with amazing people who are called to serve and care for residents in everyday life. These servants are truly the church distributed, and it has been awesome to watch! Cares Teams plan events, welcome new residents, and care for them in life’s trials and victories. Team members become the first people the residents call when they need help or just a friend with whom to spend time.

It is a privilege our teams take seriously. They take every opportunity to love the residents and share the hope that God has given them.

We are so proud of our teams and are honored that God has called us to serve alongside each and every one of them. Lots of people ask us how it’s been working for Apartment Life and Northland. Our answer is the same every time: “Responding to God and serving Him with our lives is the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done. We feel more alive when we serve and are excited every time we interview a new team. We know that as they respond to God’s calling to serve, they are going to feel the same way we do.”

By Dana Kobosky Church-wide Food Drive Northland’s yearly food drive will take place the weekend of November 12 to 14. During that weekend, bring your nonperishable food donations with you to church and place them behind your vehicle. A team of volunteers will collect donations while you are in worship. It’s that easy!

This year food donations will go to Christian HELP and to feed homeless children at Hamilton and Idyllwilde elementary schools. The nonperishable items needed most include peanut butter, pasta, jars of pasta sauce, cereals, oatmeal, canned soup, canned vegetables and granola bars.

We also need volunteers to help collect the donations that weekend during the worship services. To serve as a volunteer in the food drive, visit serve.northlandchurch.net, and click on “serve locally.” There you will find a list of all the upcoming service opportunities and you can sign up!

Operation Christmas Child The Operation Christmas Child season is upon us, and once again you have the opportunity to bless children around the world by bringing your gifts to Northland.

National Collection Week for the shoe boxes filled with gifts is November 14 through 21.

Through your gifts, you would minister to boys and girls who suffer from war, poverty, disease and natural disaster by demonstrating the love of God. Operation Christmas Child distributes the gifts in almost 100 countries, and works in and through local churches where possible, offering children gospel literature and culturally appropriate evangelistic and follow-up programs.

You can help by delivering a completed shoe box to Northland during collection week. You also have the opportunity to serve by helping with the collection of boxes at Northland. For more information about signing up to help with collection, visit serve.northlandchurch.net, and click on “serve locally.”

To deliver a completed shoe box: 1. Use an empty, standard-sized shoe box or a sixquart plastic container. You may wrap the box (and lid separately), but wrapping is not required.

2. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Print out the appropriate label from www.samaritan.org, or cut out labels from the Operation Christmas Child brochure.

Brochures are available at all Northland sites. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box.

3. Fill the box(es) with gifts. Gift ideas include small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, coloring books, writing paper, hard candy, gum, lollipops, jewelry, flashlights (with extra batteries), and hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and washcloths. Other ideas are at www.samaritan. org. Do not include used or damaged items; war-related items, such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items, such as snow globes or glass containers; or aerosol cans.

4. You also may include a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family in a separate envelope.

5. Samaritan’s Purse asks that you donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You may write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on the memo line), and place it in an envelope inside your box. If you are preparing more than one shoe box, please make one combined donation.

6. Place a rubber band around each shoe box and lid, and drop the shoe box off at a collection site. Collection will take place at a semi truck in the parking lot across the street from Northland at Longwood at these times: Monday, November 14, 3 to 8 p.m.

Four hundred Northlanders answered the same call in 2011 and made their someday “today,” serving globally in 12 countries and locally in three states.

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory.

We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

pastoR’s BIo Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
