Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.”

When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Hope is the ability to hear the music of the future.

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them.

True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:27-29; Romans 8:1939; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation.

(Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith.

It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. Christmas is not a day or a season, but a condition of the heart and mind. If we love our neighbors as ourselves; if in our riches we are poor in spirit and in our poverty we are rich in grace; if our love of others isn’t for show, but suffers long and is kind; if when our brother asks for a loaf we give ourselves instead; if each day dawns in opportunity and sets in achievement, however small; then every day is Christ’s day and Christmas is always near.

A

dvent, the season beginning four Sundays prior to Christmas and ending on Christmas Day, has been celebrated by the church for centuries. It is one of the most spiritually significant seasons of the year for believers.

It is the already, but not yet. Christ has come, and we eagerly await His return, but in the meantime we have a mission as His church. We can participate with Him as He brings His Kingdom to earth as it is in Heaven. We can acknowledge and celebrate His coming as we prepare our hearts to realize His presence at work around and through us.

Advent began as a season of confession, a time for discipline and repentance in the confident expectation of Christ’s return, and a celebration of baptism for new believers.

The Council of Tours in 567 established the period of Advent as a time of fasting. The same council also proclaimed the 12 days from Christmas to Epiphany a sacred, festive season.

Over the years, the Christmas season has become a time associated with great joy. Perhaps that is why it can be especially difficult for people going through personal hardship, loss or struggle. There is no other season that brings home in such a dramatic way the bittersweet journey of life.

But regardless of our personal struggles, Christmas can be an opportunity to intentionally focus together on Christ’s presence and work in our lives. But it isn’t easy in today’s culture to keep the true meaning of this holiday season uppermost in our hearts and minds. There is so much pressure associated with this time of year.

This year we are providing a study guide that will give a weekly framework for spiritual conversations with friends, family or small groups. Each week you can read together the stories of those who participated in the coming of Christ and consider how we can participate in bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to earth.

The study is a companion to Northland’s Advent sermon series. Instructions will be included for using an Advent wreath as a focus for your time together. Believers have used the Advent wreath for centuries, as it holds great symbolism for the coming of Light and Life into the world. It is our hope that this study guide will help you keep Christ at the center of Christmas, and will help you make Christmas a condition of your heart.

New Film “Queen of Katwe” Portrays Members of Northland Partner Church A

recently released biographical drama film, “Queen of Katwe,” is deemed by critics as “irresistible” and “uplifting.” But for Northland, it is more than an inspirational movie, as it portrays people who attend Northland’s partner church in Kampala, Uganda, Miracle Centre Kawempe. Senior Pastor Robert Nabulere recently visited Northland and shed some light on the new movie and the real people behind it.

The film portrays the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl who grew up in Kampala’s slum called Katwe, and Robert Katende, a young pastor from Miracle Centre, who teaches Phiona how to play chess. Phiona excels at the game, and the film portrays the surprising journey she takes into international recognition. Through the teaching process, Phiona accepted Christ, and Katende discipled her in her faith.

“Chess teaches people to think, to plan, to count your costs,” says Pastor Nabulere. “It’s a game of life. … You have to make one move at a time.”

Katende, the story’s passionate young pastor who disciples children in impoverished life situations, knows a

life of poverty all too well. He himself lost both his parents at a young age, and his personal life story motivates him to mentor children like Phiona.

“He has that passion to help other children break their limits, no matter what their background is,” Pastor Nabulere says of Katende.

Besides serving with a sports ministry called Sports Outreach, Katende serves as a leader at Miracle Centre Kawempe. Pastor Nabulere recalls days when Katende would be slotted to preach and would get on stage to lead service in a tracksuit.

“I would wonder, Why is this guy in a tracksuit?” Pastor Nabulere recalls jovially. “He eventually told me, ‘Pastor, those were the days I didn’t even have money to pay for the bus. So I ran across town.’”

The story of transformation portrayed in “Queen of Katwe” is close to the hearts of Pastor Nabulere and other believers in Uganda. It powerfully portrays how building bridges to those who need love and discipleship can lead to life transformation.

The film (rated PG for thematic elements, an accident

scene and some suggestive material) is currently playing in theaters everywhere. In addition to the film, author Tim Crothers wrote a biographical book called “The Queen of Katwe.”

The Evangelical Church of Haiti — Founded in 1950 with five churches, the ECH has since grown into a network of 60 churches throughout Haiti. On December 13 and 14, we will host our second Christmas House, a fun and festive shopping experience for parents facing financial challenges.

ean, originally from Maryland, moved to Florida in 2015 and has been attending Northland since 2012. Currently, he serves with the Security Team and will be working with the CARE Together ministry by coordinating the logistics of our quarterly serve projects.

Sean previously worked in law enforcement for three years with local and federal agencies. He graduated from Virginia Intermont College, where he played baseball and received a bachelor’s degree in pre-law. He recently married his wife, Claire, and he enjoys taking trips to the beach with their yellow Lab, Hampton.

The New Song Project

G

iven a choice between crafting the laws of a nation and creating its songs, which would you pick?

For many, meaningful change often is associated with new rules for governance, fresh policies and the implementation of structures that uphold a seemingly dominant worldview. Andrew Fletcher, a 17th-century Scottish politician and writer, saw things differently. He is quoted to have said, “Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.”

Fletcher’s approach apart, songs hold the potential ultimately to shape the consciousness of all people, everywhere. The final biblical scenario is every nation, all tribes, peoples and languages before the throne of God, worshiping God with a new song. In a world that seems increasingly oblivious of the unique and ultimate creative potential in Christ, what would it look like for us at Northland to create songs that invite all to be their creative best in Him? The hope is that in working together on creating the song, we, the body of Christ, in effect together learn to become the song — God’s “new song” — for and with the world.

WHAT’S IN A SONG? First, we recognize that it’s not just any song that we, the body of Christ, are singing. It is a new song. “New” refers not merely to newness in terms of sound, lyrics or theology (the ways in which we justify our beliefs). It is more than newness conceived in terms of a higher level, a different intensity or a new degree. Here, “new” refers to something that is wholly and entirely of a new substance.

Second, we notice that chronologically speaking, the new song is actually an “old” song. It is a song that is performed in historic continuity with the voicing of creation by the Creator, God. Therefore, it is a song that is continually unfolding, echoed throughout Scripture and evidenced in the poetic structure of the Hebrew Bible, the sonic significance of God’s voice through the testimonies of His people, and the essential beliefs of the early church captured in what we now know as some of the earliest hymns of the Christian church (for example, Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:1-3; 1 Timothy 3:15; and 1 Peter 2:21-25).

Third, more than just sung, the new song is lived out in community with the very people who brought into being all creation. It is the diversity of the community of the Trinity that forms the basis for the expression of new song.

Diversity, therefore, is a key characteristic for both the first and the last creative communities. But what does all this mean for us today?

Invitation to the “New Song” It is important to realize that creativity is not restricted to the so-called creatives or artists. All people are creative.

However, the birthplace for creativity is being in an active and ongoing relationship with diverse others.

The New Song Project, therefore, represents a movement of the Holy Spirit to intentionally engage and embrace the diversity of our contexts for the sake of authentic community with others. It is a place for inclusion (that is, work hard to contextualize the gospel without compromise, but use technologies and language relevant

for our global context), dialogue and partnership. It is a movement focused on being intentional in the missional charge we share in Christ to create together with others, collaborate on projects that invite the public at large in the city to encounter Jesus Christ, and extend to others the opportunity to share in the restorative justice of God. The Longwood chapter of The New Song Project meets at Northland on the second Tuesdays of every month at 6 p.m. in The Hub. Please consider praying for this ministry and joining as together we: • Explore what it would look like to unearth a wellspring of creativity at Northland that impacts our community and ultimately the world. This means calling out the creativity in each person, charting a course for discipling core creative competencies through missional projects, and offering a venue for connecting patrons with emerging creatives and their projects.

• Develop fresh “indigenous” cultures; in other words, expand our worship presence and vocabulary to include

the diversity of creative voices, sounds, musics, colors and movements of the world at Northland and beyond for God’s glory. This includes creating new songs, scripts, films and so on.

• Impact the larger community with works of creativity that inspire worship and create new spaces for dialogue with others.

• Network, both locally and globally, with creatives through the exchange of ideas and resources for the sake of multiplying creative communities.

• Distribute the church by catalyzing the spinning off of fresh creative communities as a way of planting churches for distribution.

• Play. The group 100 Guitars meets Thursdays at 6:15 p.m. in The Rink, building bridges for community through something we love — guitar!

PASTOR’S BIO During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Floridabased congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web.

Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren.

More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
