Art House Orlando: Building God’s Kingdom Through the Arts BY MELODY OLSON

hen I moved to Orlando a year ago, my emotions swirled as I left behind my beloved Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and a new movement of creative community I was involved in called Art House North (AHN). I spent six years traveling as the background vocalist for singer/songwriter Sara Groves, who, along with her husband, Troy, founded AHN. After dreaming with them for a couple of years about beginning AHN, Troy and Sara took the plunge and bought a 100-year-old church in St. Paul. They were working on transforming it into a gathering place for artists when I felt God calling me to move away. God’s timing perplexed me. The vision of AHN was so near to my heart. I loved the Groves dearly, and had several Art House plans of my own to connect AHN artists with local homeless ministries, prison ministries and low-income school programs. However, shortly after I moved, as God always does, He answered my questions in His timing when I was informed by some close friends that the True North Foundation (www.truenorthfoundation.org) had been discussing launching an Art House Orlando (AHO) for quite some time, and that the launch would take place in the next year! Immediately, I sensed, very gratefully, that God had directed my path to assist in beginning yet another Art House. History of Art House Orlando True North Foundation (TNF) founder and Northland Pastor Vernon Rainwater, along with a few friends and TNF affiliates, traveled to St. Paul to witness the launch of AHN in February. They thought, If they can do it, so can we! Soon after, they formed the AHO committee (of which I am a part), rented some office/performance space (shared with Orlando Ballet Co. and Central Florida Community Arts) in the Dr. Phillips Center on Lake Ivanhoe, a beautiful building strategically located in the heart of the Downtown Arts District, and began planning the inaugural event, which will take place in the Dr. Phillips building November 30. Art House North, Art House Orlando and 2-yearold Art House Dallas are all inspired by Art House America. Charlie Peacock, a Grammy Award-winning

artist/producer in Nashville, started Art House America when he and his wife, Andi Ashworth, purchased an old church and transformed it into a recording studio, their home and a place of mentorship for artists. Many great musicians, such as Sara Groves and The Civil Wars, have benefited from connecting with Art House America. Charlie has helped these and many more artists find their voice. While AHO functions independent of the Art House America network, AHO is pleased to operate with the blessing and encouragement of Art House America and is born of the same DNA, with a heart for inspiring a movement of creative communities that enable stories of recreation and advance the good of people and planet. So, how will AHO benefit people and planet? It will inspire creativity in people’s lives by holding monthly, and eventually weekly, events that will bring the artistic community together. As people experience fresh creative undertakings, they, too, will be inspired to create. After all, God, the ultimate Creator, has designed us all in His image to create. A key strategic factor of AHO must be mentioned: While AHO is very connected with the mission of Jesus—we want to mirror Him in every way possible— we are intentionally not connected with one church community. We exist to unite the church in Central Florida. While uniting the church, the hope is that we will reach out to the entire city. (We already have begun strategic partnerships with the city of Orlando, the Downtown Arts District, Downtown Credo, CityArts Factory, Food Truck Wars and many more.) We believe that the church is called to be salt and light in the world, so AHO is working to build those relationships, not necessarily for evangelism’s sake, but because we believe that as we inspire as many people as we can to live fully creative lives, eventually the broader community will see glimpses of the beauty of our God and the purposeful life He has designed every human being to live.

We already have events in the works. There will be concerts—local band Civil Parish (December 22), Pete Geiger CD release of Hallowed Ground (January 18), Sara Groves (February 8)—at various venues in the city. We also are starting a series of monthly citywide interactive art/worship nights titled “Downtown Church.” The first installment will be Pete Geiger’s CD release. Also, we are sponsoring a traveling CIVA (www.civa.org) art exhibit that will be held in Northland’s lobby in April. At our launch event November 30, we are showing art by several local artists and premiering an interactive piece by local dance company Canvas (www.canvascoalition.com). We also will hear from renowned and nationally beloved singer/songwriter Pierce Pettis that evening. Many key city officials, community organizers, church leaders and artists will be in attendance. Is your heart stirred, like mine is, to encourage artists in their endeavors? Do you believe that all creation, when made by God’s people for His glory, can bring the church together and reach out to the world around us? Pray for us as we reach out to the surrounding artistic community. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1, NIV). It is our deep desire to be led by the Holy Spirit in this endeavor. Distributed Journeys 2012: A year of new beginnings BY PATTI HARSHEY

hen 15 team members returned from Pisgah, Alabama’s Camp ToknowHim in October, the 2012 Distributed Journeys came to another successful close. This year 362 Northlanders and others served on 22 different short-term mission teams. In addition to our annually recurring trips, such as those to Brazil, Swaziland, Ukraine, Scotland and Jamaica, four of the teams were first-time journeys: two to the Dominican Republic, and two to Africa! Partnering with Summit Church, Hunter Vision and New Missions, the Dominican Republic Eyeglass Project took flight in May. Armed with hundreds of pairs of glasses, the team set out with the goal of helping to fit as many

people as possible with the proper prescription for clearer vision and their own eyeglasses. The team accomplished its goal and returned home having given the gift of sight to many thankful Dominicans. We’re actually already gathering glasses for next year’s trip — The Eyeglass Project collection boxes will be in foyer at all sites from December 1-17. Partnering with TIME Ministries, a team of high school students set out to build a chapel and conduct Vacation Bible School in the Dominican Republic, following the lead of the middle school students who for several years have traveled to this country to accomplish this goal. Hopefully, this was the first year of many that high school students will take up the worthwhile cause of providing a community with a “house” of worship. Another partnership, with Christ’s Hope International, had a team of nine traveling to Kisumu, Kenya, to help set up a Care Point for preschool and elementary school children in the rural village of Ombeyi. This is a community greatly affected by the AIDS pandemic, poverty and malnutrition. With the help of sponsorships for about 25 to 30 children, the Care Point will provide three meals a week, school uniforms and tuition, and proper medical treatment. Finally, working with Kuyasa Empowerment, a student-leadership Children in Ombeyi in need of development program sponsors. in South Africa, a team

went to a township called Kayamandi, serving in various capacities. The team helped plant a garden of fruits and vegetables that would feed children at the Kuyasa School. The team also taught the women in the community to knit so they could provide their own blankets and clothing. Also, the team coached soccer, cleaned and organized classrooms, and participated in a tutoring program. Next year we are excited to continue these kinds of partnerships by broadening our scope of Distributed Journeys. We will be including many more trips on our Someday Is Today website (www.somedayistoday.net) that will be facilitated and led by sending organizations other than Northland, giving our congregation a wide variety of opportunities to serve globally! In next month’s Respond, look for information on our 2013 Distributed Journeys. Our Passport to the Nations event is scheduled for Friday, January 18. orthland’s Disaster Response Team was invited to serve those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The team deployed to The Community Church of the Nazarene in Far Rockaway, N.Y., for 11 days. The team wants to thank you for your prayers and financial support that allowed us to accomplish the mission.

Team info: • 11 days of deployment • 13 team members • 20,000 meals cooked and served Distributed: • 1 ½ semitrailers loaded with cases of water distributed • 1 semitrailer of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) distributed • 1 semitrailer of diapers, baby wipes and baby supplies distributed • 22,500 blankets distributed • 20,000 individual bags of nonperishable food distributed • Warehouse full of used and new clothes distributed Food and goods that were distributed came from FEMA, churches, businesses, restaurants and individuals from every corner of the United States.

e were watching a “60 Minutes” story on homelessness when, wait ... Seminole County, Florida? Homelessness? Families living in their cars, trying to keep together, so Bev and Jim Sullivan. close to home? We were saddened and shocked. Our hearts ached. Then we heard Beth Davolos explain the school district’s Families in Transition program, which helps with temporary shelter and basic needs. Children need their basic needs met so they are capable of learning while at school. Lines of children at local motels were getting on school buses. Wow, 1,800 homeless children? That’s a lot of kids. Later, Pastor Joel discussed Northland’s helping the school district with volunteers. There aren’t enough social workers. Could we really help? Doubts raced through our minds. Then we thought of our loved ones, our 10 grandchildren. Pastor Joel said, “All you need is a willing heart.” Well, we have willing hearts. When we joined the first class of Advocates, we were overwhelmed. The classes were very informative. We prayed we had learned enough. Then we were given a family! We were nervous. We started with a mom with three middle school boys. She was so hopeful and appreciative. The training started paying off. We taught her to “fish” online for information from www. resourcepoint.org. (This is an awesome tool; look it over). We helped her fax, find job training, and get help with bills, the basics and services for her sons. When we had questions, we had folks at Northland and the FIT program to consult. We never felt alone. Advocates meet monthly to learn and share experiences. Every meeting we learned about a new critical resource. During every hurdle the mother faced, we walked beside her. The stress faded from her face as together we overcame the obstacles. The mom was empowered, and had resources and a plan. After three months, she moved forward with the tools she gained. Our next family was a disabled dad with three little girls living in a motel. They needed housing. We helped get the various deposits. The dad found housing but needed furniture and household items. My friend’s cousin donated most of the household items. Then, a Northland member and his son donated their time and truck. The adorable three little girls hugged and kissed us all. The past six months, we have watched in awe and amazement as miraculous events have unfolded. God orchestrated all the things the family needed — things we take for granted. We saw so many caring people all working together to help and doing their best. We witnessed the families turn the corner and transition to a better place. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.

About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
