The Birth of Jesus Christ In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Worship Christ today for the mystery of the Incarnation. It is a mystery why an all-powerful God would leave the majesty of heaven to take on human flesh and joyfully encounter the ordinary, teaching us to marvel at the mundane.

L

ast week I sat down to talk to a friend I’ve known for only seven months. He’s been fumbling toward faithfulness while dealing with depression. Since I have his permission, I’d like to share some of his story.

We’ll call him John. John grew up in a pretty typical environment, with two parents, a sister and a dog. John’s dad and mom both worked in blue-collar settings and provided enough for the family. John was an athlete and a weight lifter throughout high school and college. He’s never been abused verbally or physically. If there is anything atypical about John, it’s that he’s desperately trying to follow Jesus Christ.

John hasn’t always believed. He was actually a devoted atheist for roughly six years. During college John was in a fraternity, and he willingly joked about how Christians were weakminded and fake. His understanding of Christianity was a bunch of judgmental people banding together to do potlucks and talk about how much better they were than other people as they prayed to someone who doesn’t exist.

Last year that all changed for John.

Near the end of last year, one of John’s best friends died suddenly. It opened up a box of restlessness for John on a daily basis. So John reached out to a friend who happened to be a friend of mine, and John and I started grabbing coffee together. We didn’t talk about Jesus right away.

Honestly, I don’t think that’s what he knew he was looking for. We just drank coffee and talked about life. I got to know John, and he was able to get to know me. John’s biggest question so far hasn’t been about how to stop being depressed or whether he can be fixed; it’s been, “Am I wasting my life?”

Over a few months, I’ve had the opportunity to share with him that God chose to come into this world to have a relationship with imperfect people, that Christianity didn’t start with religious authorities or the wealthiest of society. It didn’t get funded by a specialist group in support of purity.

Rather, it began with the Word becoming flesh on earth in the lowest of positions, a baby named Jesus. Jesus was born into poverty and later surrounded himself with fetid-smelling fishermen, prostitutes, tax collectors and liars. He was constantly around people

who needed Him to show them the way to live full and genuine.

If you considered Jesus just another human being, you might say He wasted his life. But if Jesus is truly who He says He is, then what He chose to give His life to helps us see how to fully experience His Kingdom on earth. John’s response was, “Then I want to waste my life for Jesus.”

Since then John and I have talked about how faith is trusting that God will take care of you during your most desperate moments. I’m talking about the moments when your heart breaks, when you lose the most important person in your life, when you’re hurt at the most intimate and deepest levels, or when the person you never thought would hurt you betrayed you.

If you considered Jesus just another human being, you might say He wasted his life.

But if Jesus is truly who He says He is, then what He chose to give His life to helps us see how to fully experience His Kingdom on earth.

John’s response was, “Then I want to waste my life for Jesus.”

It’s because of this faith that John has been courageously and faithfully open to allowing God to be the forgiving, redeeming God that He wants to be for us. John took the risk of stepping into community, which he now calls family. He decided he no longer wanted to live in a shadow of what God really intended for him. He got tired of spending many of his days secretly thinking that if he worked harder he’d become satisfied and fulfilled. John is finding that by living this genuinely in community, he doesn’t have to consider if he is wasting his life at all.

John is still learning what a relationship with Jesus looks like, but he’s discovering that a right relationship with God is like standing bare in front of our Creator and soaking in His love as He mends the wounds.

In the meantime, John is taking next steps where he can explore faith and experience community with imperfect people while being pursued by a perfect God.

Christmas House Update T

hank you for participating in our second annual Christmas House event! It was a huge success because of your giving and serving this Christmas season. Through the generosity, Northlanders were able to serve over 80 families, who shopped for over 220 children.

More important than gifts, Northland volunteers and staff members were able to spend time with each family member building relationships and share other wonderful opportunities of which they can take advantage. All shoppers from the Christmas House are invited back in January to participate in a financial study, career coaching or parenting classes. We look forward to working with our families beyond the Christmas season!

LifeHope Childcare Center Turns 1!

I

t was a year ago that LifeHope Childcare Center welcomed its first baby, a 3-month-old girl named Samara. She is now a happy toddler, nearly 16 months old, with plenty of classmates to keep her company.

LifeHope Childcare Center, housed in two “cozy cottages” next to The Rink, is a childcare program for single moms and their babies up to 24 months old. To qualify, moms must be able to meet weekly with an advocate, attend parenting and budgeting classes, worship each week, volunteer their time, and be open to other recommended opportunities.

Over the last year, this ministry served 38 babies and 31 moms. While the babies spend their days in our cottages, their moms are working toward their spiritual, financial, professional and educational goals. It truly is a holistic approach to growth.

Several moms are working toward their GEDs, while others are the first in their families to enroll in college. What a blessing to see the success stories come out of this ministry!

ith the start of a new year, we are filled with hope and thankfulness as we think about building on our current global relationships. Northland’s involvement around the world is extensive, more so than most congregants (and staff!) realize. We are partnered through relationship in such countries as Uganda, Haiti, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Brazil, South Africa, Swaziland, Japan, India ... the list goes on, and includes places we can’t name. People might be surprised by how much good is happening in these countries and around the world.

Naturally the media covers what’s sensational, which is usually a lot of negative press, but the amount of good happening through churches and through our partners is overwhelming.

A weekday cooperative learning environment.

God of Wonders Celebration Every December, our first through fifth graders join together to celebrate what they have learned in children’s church about who God is and what He has done. This year, at our God of Wonders celebration, the children shared Bible stories and scripture songs with family and friends.

Beginning the weekend of January 1, we’ll be doing things a little differently in Children’s Church. Children will connect with their teacher in the classroom before going to large group worship as a class. Parents, this means you will take your child directly to his or her classroom after check-in. We are excited about this opportunity!

JUMPSTART! Do you have a fifth-grader in your home? If so, you are aware that middle school is right around the corner, and your “little kid” is beginning the journey into adolescence. Northland’s Student Ministries and Children’s Ministries together want to help you and your child navigate through this transition with a fun and relational program called JumpStart!

Let’s face it, change can be scary at any age, but JumpStart is designed to help your student transition smoothly from elementary to middle school.

During JumpStart, your soon-to-be middle school student will have a chance to connect with other fifth-graders who are also making the jump to middle school and meet his or her future leaders in Student Ministries, all while having a blast!

Parents, this is your chance to get to know other families and an opportunity to receive great advice from Student Ministries leaders and other parents who have gone through the same transition, ask questions about Student Ministries programs, and ultimately become better equipped to continue to disciple your student.

We want to help form relationships with you and your kids that continue through their middle and high school years so we can disciple them and support your discipleship efforts at home.

This gathering is for current high school seniors and meets weekly. It is intended to help current high school seniors prepare for the phase of life after high school, no matter what that looks like. Students will have an opportunity to spend time together, share a meal, and engage with a variety of topics.

Middle School Fall Retreat “Throughout the weekend, students had a chance to pause to spend time with strengthening their relationship with God, each other, and their leaders. On the final night, many students responded to believing in Jesus for the first time and to restart living new life in Christ. Thanks for all those who prayed for the students, leaders, and for an amazing retreat,” Middle School Minister Bryan Royals said.

SHORT-TERM MISSION TRIP INFO MEETING: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - MIDDLE SCHOOL TRIP Saturday, January 14, 8:30 to 9 p.m., fellowship hall. It is an informational meeting for the middle school mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The meeting is for both the parents and the student(s). The trip is June 9 to 17. The purpose of this trip is to bring God’s love to the Dominican people by sharing God’s word, serving His people and building relationships. We want to change lives and bring hope. In addition, we desire for each middle school student and his/her parent to grow in their relationship with Christ and be confident of their God given gifts. We will partner with TIME Ministries to build and provide a chapel for a pastor and his congregation in a local village. We will serve one or two communities with an eyeglass clinic. In addition, we will partner with Quisqueyana Baptist Church and help run a children’s VBS program in an unreached community. As directed by our ministry partner, Radical Life Church (“Iglesia Radical”), we will work on construction projects at the river and the church and lead VBS lessons with the children. Our boat is a medical boat, reaching out to the villagers with medical and dental needs. If you are in the medical field, this is a wonderful way to serve. We are also a Helping Hands team, so many of us will go into the villages offering VBS for the children, visit homes building relationships and sharing Jesus Christ, and participating in men, women and teen ministries. SUICIDE PREVENTION FAMILY WORKSHOP Wednesday, January 18, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., The Hub. This training is a two-hour interactive skillsbased workshop that provides families with the opportunity to learn how to identify suicide risk factors, warning signs and protective factors; how to interact and communicate with youths who may be thinking about suicide; and how to build a safety net around youths to keep them safe. A $30 stipend will be provided for childcare and transportation to each family. At the end of the training, participants will be asked to take part in a three-month follow-up survey. USF will contact participants and will pay them for their time ($25). This is a free training to all members.

TRANSFORMING SPACES: A GUIDE TO FORMING KINGDOM-SHAPED COMMUNITIES Sundays, 1 to 3 p.m., Jeremy Penn’s home. The goal of this course is to guide young adults (18- to 35-year-olds) into Kingdom-shaped communities.

Mission To Japan takes care of the students during the day with English and Bible classes at Northland as well as sightseeing trips. Host families are needed to receive students in the evenings and provide meals, a room, and Christian friendship. This is a great way for the whole family to learn about a foreign culture, share God’s love, and make a new friend for life.

What We Believe THE BIBLE — We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16) GOD —

The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. THE MEANS OF SALVATION — We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary.

All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. MAN — We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race.

We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23) THE CHURCH — We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those

who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation.

THE CHRISTIAN’S WALK — We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. Pastor’s Bio During Dr. Hunter’s tenure, which began in 1985, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a Florida-based congregation of 20,000 that worships worldwide via the web. Before accepting the pastorate at Northland, he served as a United Methodist minister for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. Becky is the former president of the Global Pastors Wives Network and is the author of “Being Good to Your Husband On Purpose” (Creation House). The Hunters raised three sons and have seven grandchildren.

Northland is becoming a church of distributed churches, a family of spiritual families. More and more, the larger congregation of Northland is also comprised of smaller, distributed churches – spiritual families that form outside the walls of the building as they follow Jesus together and live out the mission of Jesus in their everyday lives.

All of Northland will continue to gather together for weekend worship services, whether in person or online, but being the church isn’t limited to the worship service. The distributed churches also form the church right where people live, as they get together in homes, in offices, on campuses or in coffee shops for meals, fellowship, the study of Scripture, prayer, service and reaching out to those not yet included (Acts 2:42-47).
