Announcing our 2020 - 21 season, which will see a packed program featuring new work, the best of international artists and some old favourites. North Lands Creative has supported brave, creative and amazing ideas since 1995. This season marks the third year of our new strategic vision for our organisation and preparation for our 25th anniversary. North Lands Creative is the UK’s premier glass studio; an independent and ambitious organisation on the peripheral part of Europe with a local, national and international remit. We are a home for contemporary studio glass, a producing studio, a resource for artists and a critical hub for international glass making. North Lands Creative works with artists across all art forms to make and present extraordinary work that inspires and provokes audiences. For artists and audiences, it is an opportunity to be immersed in an environment where there is sometimes no differentiation between sea and sky, where isolation is experienced in all four directions. On a human level, the purity of the environment makes artists re-think and re-imagine their practice and brings much needed time to breathe, unplug and tap into the natural surroundings for inspiration. North Lands Creative independence and history has always been defined by three things ‘Artists, Location and Ambition’ these will continue to play an important role in our future. As we roll out our new season in the coming months, we look forward to welcoming you to North Lands Creative to experience some of that inspiration. The founding spirit of North Lands Creative was centred on artists. We are proud of our legacy but it is not a history that lies heavy on our shoulders; it is a history of reinvention, of evolution, of looking to the future and of change. Looking to the future is embedded in our DNA. Our new strategic plan has provided a catalyst to re-examine our purpose as a space for artists and audiences. As a centre of excellence for glass we use this to reflect, to re-imagine our future and to develop new ways to ensure that everything we do remains innovative and is delivered to the highest possible standards under the best possible conditions. We are proud to play our part in building a stronger glass community and discovering new talents and offering opportunities; we are thankful to Creative Scotland and other supporters for making this work possible. It is an exciting time for North Lands Creative, as the arts are needed in ever more challenging times, and we hope that you will join us as audiences, participants and partners as we move forward. Check out our new season brochure. Come and make the visit to North Lands Creative in 2020.

‘Defining Tradition’ Dante Marioni (USA) 13 – 19 August 2020
Glassmaking, Design, Japanese Aesthetics All levels welcome Price: £780
Glassblowing, Design, Colour, Form, Light Intermediate to advanced level Price: £1,300
Ikebana, the Japanese art of arranged flowers is a simplified and stylized aesthetic in which all elements of a composition combine to make a harmonious whole. Guided by precision, a core value of Japanese culture. This class will explore the ethics of Ikebana, through the medium of hot glass and glassblowing.
This class is ideally suited for those already possessing hot glass making skills. With demonstrations daily, this class will teach a combination of American & Venetian glass blowing techniques. The facilities at North Lands Creative create an intimate atmosphere in which to watch and learn from this glass master.
Beginning with the simple bubble, students will be shown how to design and develop containers that have an intended purpose, before using their finished glass work in personal Ikebana arrangements. The significant Japanese narratives of harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity will be carefully explored throughout the class. Culminating in a collaborative traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.
Dante Marioni was born into a family of glassblowers; from an early age Dante spent summers at Pilchuck Glass School. Before studying glassblowing at The Glass Eye, Washington, where he met Benjamin Moore, who confirmed his passion & commitment to pursue glassblowing. Over the years, Dante has taught extensively in many countries with influences from Lino Taglipietra and Richard Marquis.
Makiko Nakagami is associate professor at Toyama City Institute of Glass Art in Japan. Toyama City Institute of Glass Art was founded in 1991, and is located on the Northwest coast of Japan’s main island of Honshu on the outskirts of Toyama City between the Tateyama mountain range and the Sea of Japan. Toyama City, as part of the Toyama City Total Planning Project, has begun ‘The Support of Creation of a New Art and Culture’ and has been working hard to create a supportive structure and community for glass artists to work within. Makiko creates simple blown glass tableware and vessels designed for eating and drinking and also for plants including simple Ikebana traditionally used for Japanese flower arrangement.
His execution to combine American and Venetian techniques is world-renowned. ‘I have never really been in love with all the obvious qualities of glass. I am more in love with the process and the traditions, age-old and of the contemporary studio variety. Form is always my primary concern; light manipulation and colour are almost an afterthought.’ Dante Marioni is considered a master of glassblowing and his work is held in numerous private and public collections worldwide.

‘Digital Manufacturing Experiments with Murano Glass’ Nicola Moretti with Damiano Frison (Italy) 24 – 30 August 2020
‘A Master Class of Disorderly Inquiry’ Kit Paulson (USA) 14 – 20 September 2020
Murrine, Hot-glass 3D Digital Moldblowing Intermediate to advanced level Price: £1,100
Flameworking, Sculpting, Installation All levels welcome Price: £ 1,100
The experimental undertaking for this class is based on the study of two traditional techniques: glass blowing and melting on refractory plaster molds. The class will look at the experimentation that concerns the combination of computational design, 3D printing and fused glass mold casting using murrine. By looking at different techniques of digital manufacturing students will learn how to make hand blown glass with different digital technique molds and how this could help in the production process. Nicola will be joined by Damiano Frison, designer and maker that investigates the possibilities between new technologies and the millenary tradition of glass craftsmanship.
This class will focus on creating complex glass structures from solid borosilicate rod. Beginning with basic flame working techniques students will learn how to draw with the glass. Developing and building an intricate web like structures from scale drawings and simple motifs.
Nicola Moretti is a skilled and histrionic glass master who has the innate spirit of curiosity. His specialities are custom productions and the using of murrine, but above all what strive is his propensity to experiment new solutions that dialogue with traditional glass processing techniques. After a thirty-year experience in glass processing and with a long family tradition that dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century, in 2013 the brothers Alberto and Nicola Moretti founded a dynamic company, specializing in murrino glass processing and glass fusing. Damiano Frison worked in Del_Fablab of University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, and continues to explore how experimentation can evolve into production with Lunardelli Venezia.
Bring grand ideas, a pencil, and a compass and be taught how to convert your paper machinations into delicate, complex drawings of glass. Kit Paulson received her MFA from Southern Illinois University and her BFA from Alfred University. She has taught at schools including Penland School of Craft, Pilchuck Glass School and Bildwerk Frauenau. Kit has completed residencies including the Rosenberg Residency at Salem State University, S12 Gallery in Bergen, Norway and the Tacoma Museum of Glass. She has received scholarships from Pilchuck Glass School, Corning Museum of Glass, Pittsburgh Glass Center, The Windgate Foundation and Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. She is currently a resident artist at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina.

Archives and research-based work will be a dominant thread throughout our 2020 artist residencies signalling the launch of an in-depth enquiry into the layered histories of North Lands Creative. The Active Archive Residencies is an extensive research initiative that will delve into North Lands Creative 24 year history, to look at imagined futures and proposals for transformation contained within its archives. Over the residency period, the residency artist will have access to documents and collection pieces contained within our archive as well as privately collected materials. From this will emerge the many entangled histories of the UK’s premier glass organisation. The residency artist will be asked to show a new body of work created during their residency to be presented within our 25th anniversary year programme in 2021. North Lands Creative is seeking proposals from individual artists who would like to develop their practice and respond to our archive and collection through a one month-long solo residency at our campus in Lybster. The opportunity includes: an artist fee, materials budget, travel expenses, free accommodation and complementary studio access at our Alastair Pilkington Studio. The successful residents will also receive 1-2-1 support from our team in producing, developing, and discussing their work and critical practice. Proposals from artists who would like to work collaboratively with another artist will be accepted, although the budget will then be shared between collaborators.

I received a great deal of support and encouragement from Michael Bullen, Technical Manager at North Lands. The results were excellent both technically and aesthetically. 2020 “Some may find it hard travelling away from friends and family. The prospect of living in a remote town 700 miles north of home is somewhat daunting. However, the North Lands family made it clear, fast, that my friends and family were right there with me. I just hadn’t met them yet. I had the most amazing time at North Lands, working with world renowned artists, learning how a studio is run and of course developing skills. The summer internship has opened a barricade of opportunities for me including how to assist effectively in the hot shop and invites to work in studios across the country. “ Bailey Shooter 2019 Summer Intern

It has been a meeting place for glass artists, ceramicists, painters, sculptors, architects and designers and those who wish to explore the technical and artistic potential of glass either on its own or in combination with other materials.
