He is owner of the cheekily named firm Please Wait To Be Seated, which operates as agent and distributor of handpicked brands, artists, designers, and manufacturers, delivering quality goods to his fellow Scandinavian designophiles. The Keystone chair is a newly inducted component of his YMNBS family, designed by Studio OS & OOS and clothed in sumptuous fabrics from Danish textile company Kvadrat from the Kvadrat/Raf Simons collection. IN THE WOODS Every dot and line of Louise Haugaard Nielsen’s illustrations is drawn meticulously by hand, giving surreal and strange textures to the figures and worlds she dreams up. The Danish architect-turned-illustrator gave herself the moniker A Mile in the Woods when she began working with BoConcept at an international level to combat the ‘name in a sea of names’ phenomenon of self-titled projects – and also to allow herself the freedom to explore any idea she may have without paying heed to customers’ expectations of receiving strictly illustration-on-paper work. And true to her dream, she is now active in murals, logo designs, product decorations, and a whole lot else. The driving force behind her work is simple – she adores drawing and spending time with each piece to understand the direction it wants to go. One unexpected phone call from Hanne Wilhelm Hansen – widow of Danish master and design pioneer Finn Juhl - was all it took for the industrious duo behind Onecollection to begin the chapter in their careers which would include taking over all of the rights to Finn Juhl’s furniture. Not just any firm could rise to a challenge of this calibre, to represent and revivify the vanguard of Danish modernism, but the Onecollection team had just enough grit and gumption to agree – which they did in the blink of an eye, by their own admission. DYEING TO MEET YOU In traditional Swedish culture, garments used to identify people not only by gender, occupation, and class, but by marital status and geographic location. Even if the Swedes have since moved on from traditional costumes, the love of handmade fabrics persists. This is perhaps especially the case for Linum, a family-run business based in Uppsala, Sweden, which has designed and produced textiles for more than 40 years. ABSOLUTE OBJECT Copenhagen-based architect and curator Tina Midtgaard is working in an ultramodern concept of what a truly contemporary gallery can be – culling artists whose work skirts and flirts with the line between art and design and highlights the object as the absolute media; think Bauhaus, Dadaism, and Pop art. Since the 2013 launch of her gallery Superobjekt, she has been curating site-specific exhibitions with artists, architects, and designers whose creations are sometimes functional, sometimes not, but always united in their sculptural forms and the exploration of unconventional beauty. NOTES INTERNATIONAL DESIGN IN DENMARK Furniture store Paustian is a veritable institution on the Danish design scene, and since 1964 the business has introduced design aficionados to a wide range of international names, among these Vitra and Artek, whose products Paustian handles as the only store in Denmark. Paustian’s long-standing experience with and love for design have also resulted in their own furniture collection for the home and the office, designed by some of the best Danish architects and designers since 1969. If you visit the Paustian store in the Østerbro neighbourhood in Copenhagen, do pay attention to the architecture, courtesy of worldfamous architect Jørn Utzon, and remember to make room for a spot of lunch in your schedule – the house restaurant is run by chef Jacob Holst Hansen, whose culinary standards match the store’s ambitions of quality, aesthetics, and international class. NEW ON THE MENU
FOOD FOR THOUGHT No one saw it coming. When a new culinary movement made the world’s headlines nearly a decade ago, it hailed not from Asia or the Mediterranean, but from Copenhagen, Stockholm, and points as far north as Lapland. The New Nordic cuisine, as it was dubbed, sought to turn the culinary dial back toward the natural world by using regional produce and old cooking techniques such as drying, smoking, pickling, curing, and smoking. Restaurants like René Redzepi’s Noma achieved widespread international acclaim and made Copenhagen the gastronomic capital of Scandinavia. Now, the buzz is far from over if you ask Christian Conradsen, a Danish chef and entrepreneur who has launched the company Nordisk Naturens Forråd (Nordic Nature’s Treasure). It is based in Frederikshavn in northern Jutland and makes the Nordic country kitchen accessible to anyone with its emphasis on bottled, handmade local produce including jams, marinades, vinegars, canola oil, mustard, sea salt and much more. 2015 promises a lot of fresh collaborations between Danish design firm Menu and their ever-growing troupe of awardwinning designers from around the globe. A budding new relationship with Swedish Jonas Forman, for instance, is just one of many recent collaborations that are whetting the appetites of fans of the company’s self-described aesthetic of ‘soft minimalism’. Forman is based in Göteborg, and like Menu, is motivated by innovative, user-friendly design. His new Arc chair uses a distinctive mechanism that enables both the seat and backrest to fold up and down simultaneously, achieving the clever detailing that Menu is known for, as well creating a sleek and storable profile when not in use. These details become all the more meaningful when you consider the typical awkwardness and discomfort of typical folding chairs – the likes of which we soon will no longer have to suffer. THE NORTHERN STARS When international media and design critics talk about Danish design, it is no longer just the giants of the past like Børge Mogensen and Finn Juhl who get mentioned. A new generation of designers charges ahead and help classify Denmark as a modern design nation. Here are three new talents you should keep an eye out for. “I OWE IT TO MYSELF TO TRY TO MAKE IT INDEPENDENTLY” Andreas Fjeldborg, 31, only just founded his company in July of last year, but the product designer has already gained praise for his ingenious yet surprisingly simple lamp. Like a sophisticated 3D puzzle to be assembled by consumers, the Flatlight invites us all to play along.
I got the idea for the Flatlight while doing an internship with the renowned Danish architect and industrial designer Knud Holscher back in 2007. He gave me the task of designing a candlestick, and I came up with the first model for the Flatlight. Thankfully Holscher loved it and immediately put me in contact with some of his manufacturers. However, though I got quite far in the process of putting the candlestick into production, the manufacturers and I couldn’t agree on which material to make it in. Obviously it would have to be fireproof seeing as a live candle was to be placed in it. We toyed with the idea of making it from all kinds of materials, steel among others, but to me the whole concept of it being assembled by the consumer from a flat piece of material went out the window if it was going to be made out a something as heavy as steel. Also, it would make the candlestick more expensive. Ultimately, the production plans fizzled out. I have created The Flatlight lamp in plywood, but I have still to think of another, non-flammable material for the candlestick. When I was growing up, I was the kind of kid who loved to take things apart only to try to put them back together – old computers, TVs, etc. People say that’s very typical of budding product designers. And as an adult I’ve come to really value the honesty of a product. Take a Mac computer, for instance – it’s an amazing piece of equipment, but you have no idea how it really works, and you can’t very well take it apart yourself. Similarly you can’t immediately spot all the components in most normal lamps where the cords and all the technical parts are hidden. I like the honesty of giving people a drawing and a flat piece of plywood for them 22
to assemble. Of course for this simple idea to work, the design has to be thought through and all lines must be absolutely perfect, otherwise it won’t fit together. I graduated as a product designer from Central Saint Martins in London in 2010. While living over there I worked in a tiny lamp shop in Shepherd’s Bush. A lot of students from school had a hard time finding internships, so I asked this guy at the lamp store if he would hire me. For six months, many, many hours a day, I stood in the basement of that shop fixing up lamps, learning a lot from the owner who did a bit of designing himself and who was my first real mentor. My studio is part of my mother’s store space and used to serve as a storage room. I lived here for the first six months after I got back from London. Today I spend about ten hours a day here, and not just designing. This is my little man cave, where I can hang out, watch YouTube videos, or just be myself. I don’t want to take my work home with me as I would end up constantly feeling guilty for not working whenever I was just watching TV on the couch. I still don’t know if I’ll be able to live as a fulltime designer for the rest of my life. All we have is time, and it’s all about prioritizing. Sure, I could be sitting in an office doing something completely different from designing, or I could work for a larger design company with more job security. But now is a time when I don’t have that many commitments or obligations, so I feel like I owe it to myself to try to make it independently. Flatlightdesign.com

“SUCCESS IS ALL ABOUT BEING AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME” Naja Utzon, the 41-year-old granddaughter of the world-renowned Sydney Opera House architect Jørn Utzon is carving a design niche of her own with beautifully patterned carpets and mesmeric sculptural figures. To be honest I don’t know why I became a designer. But it definitely runs in the family, seeing as my grandparents were architects and artists, my mother is an artist/designer, my dad an architect, and my brother is an artist. The love of design seems to have claimed every branch of the family tree. I myself got a degree in ceramics from the University of Westminster in London in 2001, and actually only returned to Denmark about two years ago.
columns that I originally started working on because I wanted to create something that expressed individuality. We may look alike on the outside, but each individual has his or hers own personal beliefs and means of expression. At the same time, though, we’re also all part of a greater community, something that is bigger than us, be it family or the city you live in. The columns are tall, as I want them to symbolize the way we strive to do better.
After finishing university, I started working with ceramics and sculptures. Later on a British company commissioned a line of carpets, and I had so much fun doing it that I eventually launched my own brand of carpets. My daughter Savannah was very young at the time, and so I couldn’t bring her along to my ceramics and sculpture studio anyway, with all the dust and heavy objects around. I designed the carpets from home and went on to showcase them at design fairs in New York, London, and Paris three times a year.
I pour a lot of my own personality into my designs. Sometimes maybe even a bit too much. If I’m working on a project for a company, I have to tone the ‘me’ in my designs down a bit so the design will eventually fit with the given company’s profile. I’m very loud with colours and patterns, which is not necessarily the most commercially viable style, but people have come to know me instantly because of it.
Via the design fairs people started noticing my work. Some people discovered me through my carpet line, others through my sculptural work. In this way all my works came together in a kind of parallel world of artistic expression. Funnily enough, I don’t particularly feel as if my family name has opened any doors for me throughout the years. Sure, people – especially Danes – ask if I’m related to Jørn Utzon, my grandfather on my mother’s side, but other than that they are more interested in evaluating my works than in discussing my background. I have recently experienced a lot of interest in the sculptures I’m now showcasing at Northmodern. They consist of long, slender 24
Living and working as a full-time designer is tough, and I wouldn’t actually recommend it. But it’s part of who I am. I grew up in a family where you express yourself creatively, and if you encounter a hill on the way, you find a way to climb it. When you finally see yourself getting somewhere it’s enormously satisfying. Making a living from something that truly inspires and fascinates you is such a privilege. In the end, success is all about being at the right place at the right time. You want your works to be at the top of the pile when people need something new and exciting. “CLEAN SHAPES, THANK YOU” The 27-year-old curiously experimental Central Saint Martins graduate Troels Flensted, who was recently awarded 3rd place in the Muuto Talent Award 2014, has made Copenhagen the base of his Flensted Studio – a highly creative space in which the designer has produced a line of beautiful wooden chairs and stools.
I got my studio space in Østerbro in Copenhagen about two months ago, after an autumn spent deciding on whether to set up shop in London or Copenhagen. Finding a studio was more important to me than finding an apartment. I need a space of a certain size to work in, as I experiment with all kinds of materials, as well as designs in wood. I spend every last penny on new materials and thus have tons lying around. To exercise my creativity and indulge in the playful side of designing, I needed a space with room to move around and make a bit of a mess sometimes. This basement studio, which I share with my girlfriend, who’s an artist, proved perfect for that purpose. I graduated from Central Saint Martins as a product designer last summer, and initially felt a bit torn between going home to Denmark or staying in London, where I had built up a great network and where interest in my designs had really started to grow. But because of the huge differences in rental costs between London and Copenhagen, I ended up settling in Copenhagen, a decision I’m very happy about today seeing as I’m also now building momentum as a designer on the home stage. I will continue to travel back and forth to London, though, for meetings and networking – and not least because a handful of my Poured Table designs have recently been picked up by the design store The Conran Shop.
The Poured Table was what really got me noticed as a designer. It was a project focused on materials in which I investigated the behaviour and quality of a given material through quite intensive experimentation. When pouring different colours of a material into moulds, the 26
material would come together to create its own patterns that were difficult to predict. These ‘frozen moments’ make every product unique. There is a growing trend among young designers to work on the storytelling aspect of their creations as well as showing consumers the process behind the design. While working on my graduate project in London, I created a pop-up factory, The High Street Factory, in Clerkenwell, where people could come in from the street and watch me work. I rented the space for five days and it gave me an amazing opportunity to interact with consumers and ask them what they thought of the stuff I was doing. Inviting people into the creative process itself, sharing one’s thoughts behind the design, makes the consumer feel included and close to the design in a whole new way. My collection of wooden chairs and stools in cherry wood, beech, and walnut are in some ways a bit less experimental than some of the things I’ve done, which have been a bit crazy. As a Dane I believe it difficult to escape the Danish design tradition, no matter how many years you spend abroad as a designer. Growing up in Denmark surrounded by the design classics of the 50s and 60s and with the everpresent design tradition that in so many ways permeates our society and daily lives – it just shapes you in more ways than you might think when you’re young. When I tell people that I’m from Denmark I can see something falling into place in their eyes. It’s something about the minimalistic approach to design we Danes tend to practise. A personal taste for the golden drops progressed into a world famous beer brewery for owner Mikkel Borg Bjergsø. The former physics teacher began experimenting with hops, malt, and yeast in his kitchen in 2006, and today Mikkeller exports micro-brewed beer to 40 different countries and serves it from his own cool and classy bars in Copenhagen, Stockholm, San Francisco, and Bangkok. With beers named Beer Geek Vanilla Shake, Vesterbro Wit, Santa’s Little Helper and Funky E-star, Mikkeller has set new standards for beer branding. But not only are the labels appealing – Mikkeller makes some of the world’s most inventive beer with ingredients like yuzu from Asia.
The name of this restaurant means Beer & Bread, which is pretty much what to expect. The restaurant specializes in the traditional smørrebrød, the open-faced rye bread sandwich – paired with home brewed beer. Have a taste of the new Nordic kitchen in a stylish yet streetwise atmosphere and try herring, potato, ham, and cheese like you have never had it before. The restaurant also has an extensive menu of snaps – maybe the largest in Copenhagen with more than a hundred different kinds.
Have dinner in Christiansborg Castle, home of the Danish Parliament, in the centre of town. The original castle was built by founding father and bishop Absalon in 1167 and thanks to two serious fires, it is now testimony to three eras of Danish architecture. The tower of Christiansborg is the highest in Copenhagen and from here you can see all the way to Sweden. Last year it was opened to the public and in addition to enjoying the view, you can treat yourself to a culinary experience in Restaurant Tårnet, which claims to serve Danish food ‘in the spirit of democracy’. UNION KITCHEN In a side street off lively and touristy Nyhavn, you can find the newly opened The Union Kitchen. Here the proprietor, British Paul Muldowney, who also owns The Union Bar across the street, has in record time created a haunt where locals meet for scrambled eggs in the morning and cocktails in the evening. The restaurant is just one of many new initiatives that have given the little street a hint of New York in recent years. Actually Union Kitchen with its grey panels, dark woodwork, and jolly atmosphere would not have seemed out of place in East Village, and with both sliders (mini burgers) and homemade chips on the menu comparisons to the Big Apple are staring you right in the eye. Union Kitchen’s culinary focus is meatballs, however, and invitations like ‘meat our balls’ and ‘keep your balls company’ say it all. ATELIER SEPTEMBER In a former interior shop by the same name, Atelier September is now serving light, organic food in a relaxed, homely atmosphere. Take your seat by one of the large windows facing the street and watch people watch you while you are enjoying the almostfamous avocado sandwich on rye bread. Remember to document it on Instagram like the art and fashion in-crowd sitting next to you – wearing slim jeans from Acne and chequered shirts in

KARMAMAN
Much attention from foodies all over the world was directed at American cook and former chef at Noma Matt Orlando when he opened his own restaurant called Amass a couple of years ago. Amass means more or less the same as ‘to gather’, and that is exactly the intention: gathering with friends for a good meal. The restaurant, located in the former tool depot at the B&W shipyard on Refshaleøen, has the unique Table 153, where you are seated among other guests you do not know in advance to enjoy a meal, which in Amass’ own words is ‘spontaneous, fresh, exciting, and thought-provoking.’
Newly opened Karmaman is a cross over between a cafe, a deli, a food market, and a coffee shop. You can buy fresh vegetables, homemade meals, and wine to go, or join the locals at the long wooden community table and order the dish of the day. The emphasis is on the social aspect of eating – hence the long table where strangers become friends – and on locally grown and produced food.

If you do not know this perfect place for a drink or a locally produced brew you will never find it. Located in a former drugstore in the back of a building in Vesterbrogade, it is hidden from the main traffic of this busy neighbourhood. Liedkoeb offers the best drinks available in the city – served by an accommodating staff who willingly recommends their own favourites from the extensive cocktail menu.
OSTERIA 16 ‘Osteria 16 is potentially cult’ Danish food magazine Gastro wrote when this restaurant opened last year. Their prediction was spot on, and unoccupied seats have been hard to come by since then. Osteria 16 is an informal eatery with Italian dishes on the menu, served in rustic settings with a spirited atmosphere just like in, well, Italy. The

SEE Copenhagen has a thriving art scene and is – based on a boom in the last couple of years – celebrating its position as a unique place for experimentation and innovation. The city offers a great variety of independent galleries showing contemporary art at shifting art shows and exhibitions, but the established museums and historic galleries are also worth a visit.
LARMGALLERI Larm is the Danish word for ‘noise’, and at this gallery there is no quiet-please tone of voice. The venue was founded in 2005 and quickly made a name for itself as an acclaimed space for contemporary art with exhibitions from primarily European artists, but artists from North America, The Middle East, and South America have occasionally found their way into the elegant space. DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK This is Denmark’s largest museum of Danish and international design and a central exhibition forum for industrial design and applied arts in Scandinavia. NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum founded in 1888 by local brewer Carl Jacobsen (18421914), who also is the father of the famous Danish Carlsberg beer. The museum showcases one of Europe’s finest collections of art and artefacts from Mesopotamia, pharaonic Egypt, Ancient Greece, Etruria, and The Roman Empire, as well as French and Danish art of the nineteenth century. Designer YVONNE KONÉ Designer Yvonne Koné has recently opened her own store in Store Strandstræde in central Copenhagen, where you can buy her elegant shoes and bags. But even though she likes the city centre, the Vesterbro neighbourhood occupies a special place in her heart, and she has lived there with her family for 14 years. She is especially fond of the diversity, which makes the neighbourhood vivacious and colourful. “I love Vesterbro because here’s room for everybody. The neighbourhood used to have this rather dubious reputation because of the prostitutes and the drug dealers. They’re still here, but in so relatively controlled numbers that the area feels safe. In recent years many families with children – like us – have moved here, and this diversity, in terms of age, ethnicity, and economic status, helps give Vesterbro a great splash of lovely colouring. Within 50 metres you find a bunch of upmarket bars and restaurants,
a porn shop, and some of Copenhagen’s most expensive flats. I’d especially recommend the little cocktail bar 1656, Gasværksvej 33 because of the original flavour combinations and the cosy atmosphere; the café Granola, Værnedamsvej 5 because of the early opening hours (opens at 7 am), their soft-boiled eggs and cheese sandwiches with apple; and the yoga place senses, sommerstedgade 7, which is the absolutely loveliest place to exercise in Copenhagen.”

Chef Mikkel karstad Mikkel Karstad is a chef, author of the cookery book Spis, and the man behind the blog Weyoutheyate.com. He lives with his family in Østerbro, which has been his hood the last 17 years. He could not live without the water, the space, and the light in the neighbourhood. “Some might say that Østerbro is kind of boring, but there’s a calm here that suits me very well indeed, as my daily life is totally hectic, with four kids, full-time job, and plenty of other activities. At the same time it’s close to the city centre with its shopping possibilities, to Nørrebro with its quaint little shops, and to the coast and the beach, where I spend a lot of time with my family. Here’s a sense of space and light that you just won’t find anywhere else in the city. I feel at home in Østerbro when we grill in the yard on summer

evenings and when I ride my bike to Svanemøllen Havn in the early winter mornings and jump into the icy water. I’d recommend the menswear boutique Goods, Østerbrogade 44, because of their style and amazing service; our local coffee and wine bar La esquina, ryesgade 76 where the food and the atmosphere are top-notch, always; and Normann Copenhagen, Østerbrogade 70, which is a beautiful and different shop, located in a former cinema, with clothes, furniture, books, and accessories.”
DO The perfect leisure activity depends on the time of year. In the summertime the city comes alive in the numerous green park spaces and especially at the waterfront where people go for a dip during their lunch break. In the wintertime it is all about the Danish concept of hygge. It literally translates into ‘cosiness’, but really it is about candlelight, fireplaces, good friends, and nice food – all at the same time.
PAPIRØEN Across from Nyhavn, on the opposite side of the water, lies the little island Papirøen (The Paper Island). The large industrial halls and warehouses in the area were previously used for paper storage, hence the name, but today the island is home to a number of creative companies, as well as Copenhagen Street Food, where you can but quality food from some 40 culinary caravans, sheet metal sheds, and other provisional stalls. MEATPACKING DISTRICT The old meatpacking district has become a happening place with a variety of bars, cafés, and fine dining, and is home to creative companies and high-end galleries. The area is the former red light district, and some places the
buildings are still run-down, adding to the shabby, relaxed-cool ambience. Try restaurants like Kul, Fiskebaren, and Paté Paté and bars like Jolene, Bakken, and Mesteren & Lærlingen.
BICYCLING You will need a bicycle to get around in Copenhagen, at least if you want to blend in. In fact, 55 percent of all Copenhageners bike every day, and the city’s town planners aim to make Copenhagen the world’s best cycling city. The newly opened two-lane elevated orange Cycle Snake (the latest of the city’s safe bike lanes) wriggles its way over the harbour, connecting new parts of town for the two-wheelers, who – as the western world becomes increa-singly aware of the environmental damage of the car industry – attain ever more recognition and street coolness. City-Bikes can be borrowed for free at many junctions in town.
EMPIRE BIO At this local cinema located in Nørrebro the repertoire is a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and small, independent productions. The last row is reserved for kissing couples with double seats and anyone with long legs will appreciate the generally large space between the rows. VÆRNEDAMSVEJ Dividing Vesterbro from the district of Frederiksberg is the small street Værnedamsvej, also known as ‘The Food Street’ for its Parisian atmosphere and cosy eateries and gourmet cheese, wine, and chocolate shops. Here you will find Falernum, a cosy bar serving wine and tapas from a dedicated staff, and Granola, which is the place to go for soft-boiled eggs and coffee in the morning – and the rest of the day, for that matter.

SHOP Copenhagen offers a variety of department stores like Illum and Magasin. They are great if you are in a hurry, but you will get a more genuine shopping treat in many small independent stores scattered around the districts. Every district has its own flavour – and the city centre is the hub tying it all together.
SHOP OF THE NEW Kim Dolva and Søren Bech Jespersen from Københavns Møbelsnedkeri (Copenhagen Furniture Makers) have achieved star status among people who like design, solid handicraft, and things with history. Last year they opened a shop called The Shop of the New in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen, where they sell their own products and designs from others. Here you can buy yourself silly in chairs, lamps, carving boards, and art prints in beautiful wooden frames. HENRIK VIBSKOV Multitalented wild child Henrik Vibskov creates not only clothes but entire universes with titles like The Transparent Tongue, The Stiff Neck Chamber, and The Spaghetti Handjob. Since his student years at Central Saint Martins School of Design in London he has produced numerous collections, shows, and art exhibitions, and he is currently the only Scandinavian designer on the official show schedule of the Paris Men’s Fashion Week. GUBI STORE Design company Gubi has in recent years made a name for itself by reproducing design classics such as Bestlite’s lamps, the Paradiset collection by Swedish designer Kerstin H. Holmquist, and a series of products from French designer Mathieu Mategot. Collaborations with contemporary talents like Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi from GamFratesi, and Poul Christiansen and Boris Berlin from Komplot Design have helped emphasizing Gubi’s position as international design house. The furniture company’s latest invention is a concept shop of international standard; a beautifully appointed shop, which just like somebody’s home contains both furniture and a carefully chosen selection of books and interior design. But if you have time to spare or simply need a break from the hustle and bustle, a trip up the coast is a lovely way to spend the day. The art museum Louisiana is almost mandatory if you are interested in Danish architecture and contemporary art.
KAREN BLIXEN-MUSEET Karen Blixen, also known as Isak Dinesen and Pierre Andrézel, was one of Denmark’s greatest storytellers. With the book Seven Gothic Tales, published in 1934, she made her presence felt on the international literary scene. The book was written in English, which was the language that Karen Blixen felt most at home in after 17 years in Kenya. In 1931 Karen Blixen moved home to Denmark, to her picturesque childhood home, Rungstedlund, which has remained more or less unchanged since her death in 1962. The place gives you a vivid impression of a well-to-do Danish family, of the author’s day-to-day environment, and a colourful, passionate life, as depicted in the blockbuster Out of Africa from 1985, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART In the mid-50s, when the founder of Louisiana, Knud W. Jensen, asked the architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert to build a museum as an extension to an old villa, their basic conception was to link the architecture with the

natural surroundings. They succeeded to such a degree that visitors flock to Louisiana to enjoy its beautiful gardens and scenic view of Øresund. Once you step inside the museum offers an extensive permanent art collection of more than 3,500 works and features special exhibitions of contemporary art, and you can easily spend a full day there, taking lunch in the scenic cafe and browsing in the museum shop selling design items, posters, and books. ORDRUPGAARD Ordrupgaard is most definitely worth the fifteen minutes’ drive from Copenhagen the museum itself is located in a manor house with surrounding parkland, which today constitutes the framework for a wonderful sculpture park in which a series of artists create works inspired the scenery. The museum exhibits French impressionism and Danish paintings from the early 19th century and has a large and exclusive collection of artists like Monet, Gauguin, and Danish. In addition you can visit Danish architect Finn Juhl’s house, which stands just as he left it, and in 2005 an astonishing extension to Ordrupgaard was built, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. Photographer Line ThiT KLein Line Thit Klein is a photographer working for Danish and foreign lifestyle magazines such as Elle, Vogue, and Food & Wine. She has lived in Frederiksberg for 20 years and treasures the roominess and the latitude. “Frederiksberg is cosy, spacious, and green. Here are elderly, well-to-do ladies with hats and fur coats next to younger, sort of scruffy artist types. It’s like a suburb without being one I feel at home in Frederiksberg when I feed the ducks in Frederiksberg Have together with my children. We always walk the same route and eat the same ice cream, also in the winter. In my neighbourhood I’d recommend a walk down Gl. Kongevej, because of the abundance of shops restaurants with plenty of local ambience,
including Meyers deli, gl. kongevej 107 serving super delicious food made from great produce and sold at reasonable prices, and the shop black, gl. kongevej 105, chock full of interior design and clothes and art wares. Finally I’d definitely recommend Verdens Mindste kaffebar, Tullinsgade 1, situated right at the Vesterbro border, but belonging to Frederiksberg, in my opinion – here you’ll get the best coffee in the city, served with a smile that’ll keep you warm for the rest of the day.”
