FACING FORWARD:

A conversation with our board president, Tess Dubois-Carey What were Jibe’s successes in 2021? As we know, North Natomas is growing by leaps and bounds. In 2021, Jibe was at the vanguard, enhancing livability, weighing in on projects, working with our business partners, and launching viable alternatives to driving alone.

What was most challenging? The Jibe Board leads with innovation, serving with intention and fiscal responsibility. As a transportation management organization, we grapple with the impact of telework. On the one hand, the practice is helping to ease congestion, and on the other, some members of our community still need to commute downtown. We continue to get inquiries about Jibe Express, but there’s not enough ridership at this time to warrant restarting the service.

What is most fulfilling about your board service? It’s fun! Our staff truly believes in the organization and its mission. I always look forward to seeing what they’re rolling out next.

STEPPING FORWARD: ADVOCACY

Jibe works with a diverse and representative community of stakeholders, partners, and leaders to generate ideas and practical solutions to transportation problems that arise alongside developments and infrastructure: • Writing support letters and delivering formal recommendations as a regular part of local planning processes. • Participating sensibly in discussions with developers and stakeholders. • Removing 20-plus jumbo bags of trash, shopping carts, and other large debris along Jackrabbit Trail. • Funding engaging connectivity, bike, and pedestrian friendly amenities. • Installing new trail signs, bike racks, and fix-it stations at points around the neighborhood. • Promoting public transit and mobility options.

PEDALING FORWARD: JIBE BY BIKE

Jibe wove new activities into its existing robust array of services. Programs are open to all, regardless of skill level.

Bike Doc

Better on Bikes

Jibe’s free, on-demand bicycle repair service put nearly 900 bikes back on the road this year.

This skills-based training program for cyclists aged 50 and older was offered twice, with 50 riders participating.

Bike Month Jibe celebrated Bike Month with gusto this year: • Bike & Seek, a month-long exploration challenge in which cyclists navigated to local destinations to collect points and badges. • Break Fast Wednesdays, a program offering yummy breakfast treats for cyclists and pedestrians. • Bike Resource Guide, a colorful booklet that inspires and educates, was mailed to North Natomas residents.

Bike Trek Team Members of Team Good Jibes joined us on our annual ride in support of our longtime partner Breathe California.

Neighborhood Exploration Rides Jibe organized 2 neighborhood bike rides – one which was family friendly and another that was more challenging.

Helmet Sale and Freedom from Training Wheels Event More than 150 $5 helmets were fit and sold to local kids and adults, while pre-k kids rode balance bikes. Unlike training wheels, balance bikes transition easily to pedal bikes and teach children how to ride properly.

Smart Cycling Class Alongside our partner Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, Jibe recruited and trained new cycling instructors and advocates.

Josh P: Not every community offers this service (Bike Doc), let alone for free! It was so easy and convenient. Thanks Bike Doc and Jibe!!!

Colleen S: Jibe handed out free bike lights tonight!! Thank you Jibe! They are always such a great supporter of the community!! North Natomas Jibe rocks!!

MOVING FORWARD: JIBE TO SCHOOL Bike Tech Inderkum High School continues to offer Jibe-sponsored bike training to students as part of a vocational career pathway in the exciting bicycling industry. More than 60 students completed the program this school year, learning on-bike riding skills and hands-on bicycle repair.

Project Ride Smart Jibe restarted its 5th grade bike skills education class at two partner schools this year. More than 100 students completed the required 10 hours of in-class and on-bike education.

Lala G: Thank you for ensuring our kids get to school safely!!! I certainly appreciate it.

Amber JH: She was so proud to see her drawing displayed in front of the school! We are so grateful for the different options to get to school everyday!

Jibe to School Program The Jibe to School program benefits our entire community by minimizing the traffic and long drop off lines that are commonplace during the school year. Student participants experience an increased sense of emotional and physical well-being when walking, biking, or rolling to school, while their parents gain peace of mind knowing they will be notified when their child is scanned in at the school’s entrance. Jibe added a new school, Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, to its growing list of school partners. As schools reopened and started reoffering in-person instruction, Parent Champions encouraged students to walk to school and get moving: • Five Senses Bingo kept kids engaged. • Go for Gold Step Challenge tracked steps on Jibe pedometers and students logged 9,120,695 steps over a two-week period. • Bike Month presented ample opportunities for students to log bike miles, participate in a scavenger hunt at North Natomas Regional Park, and enjoy free desserts for biking to set locations. • Walktober contestants walked 2,827 miles during this annual promotion. • Student Art Challenge produced 58 student art banners at 8 schools. Art was hung in locations easily seen by pedestrians and cyclists.

PAYING IT FORWARD: PLACEMAKING

Jibe partners on projects that strengthen connections between our North Natomas community and the places we hold in common. • As part of the Community Murals Sacramento Pilot Program, Jibe collaborated with the Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture and Natomas Unified School District on a mural that celebrates youth and active transportation. • As part of the City of Sacramento’s Artist in Residence Program, Jibe presented Wisdom Travels, a visual and oral history project featuring older North Natomans and their transportation history. Project photos were featured on pole banners, in N Magazine and The Sacramento Bee, and were displayed at the North Natomas Public Library.

FORWARD THINKING: JIBE TO WORK Grants to Businesses Our Transportation Improvement Grant Program is designed to make it easy for business owners, their employees, and their customers to swap their solo car trips for active transportation modes or work from home. 2021 funds were awarded to: • Emfor Group: Improved a consulting group’s existing work-from-home operations with technology, subscriptions, and peripherals that enhance productivity and accountability. • Westlake Charter High School: Provided bike racks and a fix-it station to create a bike friendly high school campus. • North Natomas Community Center and Aquatic Facility: Will encourage recreational rides to the new amenity by providing bike racks. • Natomas Unified School District Headquarters: Helped to fund two new electric vehicle charging stations that will be used by staff and visitors.

Danielle M: Jibe’s grant allowed for a permanent and seamless work-from-home transition for myself and my team.

California Clean Air Campaign Jibe engaged its business partners and community in a series of events that featured the Coalition for Clean Air’s Clean Air Pledge, and the simple actions that can make a big difference for air quality in California. Here’s a short summary of accomplishments: • Universal Technical Institute: Thirty-one employees took the Clean Air Pledge, completing 167 actions for cleaner air. • Bike Tech at Inderkum High School: Conducted air monitoring experiments to understand the makeup of air pollution and ways to combat it through fewer car trips and more bicycling. • Natomas Unified School District: Forty employees took the Clean Air Pledge and completed 278 actions in support of cleaner air. • Mexican Consulate of Sacramento: Completed 330 activities that contributed to a cleaner environment and healthier lifestyle by combining California Clean Air Month and Mexican Health Month.

Saddle Up Saturdays Jibe expanded its popular business program that rewards customers for biking to restaurants. This year, all restaurants in Jibe’s service area were included in the promotion. Cyclists visited local restaurants more than 700 times, riding approximately 5.70 miles per trip.
