WE ARE: CHRISTIAN,

6 OUR DISTINCTIVES: CHRISTIAN

North Park is the University of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Founded in 1891 by Swedish Christian immigrants, it continues to embody Covenant values and affirmations. Accordingly, we foster respectful discussion and engagement among people of all beliefs.

UNIVERSITY MINISTRIES (UMIN)

UMIN provides an authentic spiritual community and rich opportunities to put your faith into practice. North Parkers are encouraged to grow their faith via CollegeLife—our Sunday evening gatherings—weekly Wednesday Chapel services, and global partnerships that offer chances to explore Christianity in different parts of the world. Chicago provides countless opportunities for students to serve, seek justice, and spread God’s love.

One of the reasons I chose to attend North Park was for its commitment to being a space of religious diversity. I appreciate the opportunity to be part of a Christian community where I am in a space safe and loving enough to be able to share and respect different ideas.

CRUX: NORTH PARK’S FIRST-YEAR DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

Incoming students interested in growing their faith while journeying together with like-minded students often choose North Park’s Crux program. During this first, formative year at North Park, students in Crux explore what it means to be a Christian through an immersive experience that includes daily devotionals, service projects, mentoring alongside seminary students, and exploring Chicago.

CITY-CENTERED,

We engage Chicago as a dynamic place of learning and service. We see Chicago as our neighborhood and all of Chicago as our classroom—it’s a doorway to fantastic opportunity.

I always wanted to live in a more progressive part of America. So for me, that ended up being Chicago. North Park does seem to be more open, inclusive, and conscious of the way that it treats people who aren’t part of the majority.

CATALYST

This is North Park’s Chicago-based curriculum. Catalyst courses are regular credit-bearing courses in which you spend at least two Wednesday afternoons per semester learning outside the classroom and exploring the city during faculty-guided group excursions. You’ll engage with the city through applied academics, serving, and learning from the diverse people of Chicago. All Chicagoans are our teachers.

INTERCULTURAL.

North Park embraces and values all people and celebrates the global cultural tapestry that is reflected on our campus. We work to ensure the success of all our students, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religious belief.

THE OFFICE OF DIVERSITY AND INTERCULTURAL LIFE

Our Office of Diversity, located in Sohlberg Hall, is a welcoming space where students can come to study, enjoy a snack, or hang out with other students. It is a safe space for the entire community.

DIVERSITY ASSOCIATIONS

As part of our mission to encourage greater integration of in-class and out-of-class student life, we invite you to get involved with one or more of these student groups:

Black Student Union, East Asian Student Association, Latin American Student Association, Middle Eastern Student Association, Pacific Cultural Association, Queers and Allies, Rising DREAMERS United, Scandinavian Student Association, South Asian Student Association

I love North Park’s commitment to being intercultural. Growing up multi-racial and multi-cultural has always made me curious about others, to learn more about their ethnicity and culture.

North Park’s renowned School of Education has been producing some of the area’s most highly sought-after teachers for decades. Professors with experience, compassion, and connections throughout the country mean you are getting an education unlike any other.

LEARN HANDS-ON FROM EXPERIENCED TEACHERS!

Students complete four clinical experiences while in the School of Education. During these clinicals, students benefit from being mentored by experienced teachers in a variety of educational environments: public, private, city, and suburban schools.

We are far away from home, but we have created a home here; we’re not a club, we’re a family.

As an education major, I’ve learned the most from my clinical experiences working in the Chicago Public Schools. This has provided me with hands-on experience while working alongside professionals. As I approach my professional career, I am driven by North Park’s fundamental values and leading a life of service.

I chose NPU because of its well-known nursing program, the beautiful campus, and the overall high quality of the university. The Ethics in Health Care was definitely my favorite class. HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Networking events, guest lectures, and international travel are all a part of your SBNM education.

After a 17-year postgraduate career in investment banking, I was drawn to the opportunity to join the exceptional SBNM faculty on a full-time basis as a professional track faculty member— bringing my experience into the classroom. My heart is particularly drawn to creative economic development in under-resourced areas within the city of Chicago. What a gift it is to serve here.

MUSIC, ART, AND THEATRE SCHOOL OF

Chicago is brimming with talent from iconic theatre productions and venues, to world-renowned museums and a thriving classical and contemporary music scene. North Park faculty are immersed in this world, and students have easy access to it.

HANSON HALL

Our newly updated music facility—with climate control and acoustical treatment in all rooms—gives you ample space and modern resources for practice and performance.

The Certificate in Music for Social Change and Human Values, the only undergraduate program of its kind in the nation. The professors have helped me to connect with wide-branching networks of educators and nonprofit organizations interested in music as a medium for social change. Being with active professionals, has broadened my perspectives of possible paths in music.

28 A COMMITMENT TO SERVE

TO SERVE

At North Park, we are a part of a broader community. We encourage students to enrich their lives and those of our neighbors by serving others.

GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS

Whether you serve alongside local partners right here in local disaster relief zones, or as distant as the Zulu hills of South Africa, your eyes are sure to be opened and your heart ignited with the things closest to God’s heart.

URBAN OUTREACH

From North Park Service Days, to tutoring local students, to International Justice Mission (an anti-human trafficking group), and more, we offer a wide array of ways to get involved and make a difference in the world.

What excites me about my field is the way it has the ability to improve the health and well-being of people everywhere, and lead to radical positive change in the way our communities interact with nature, the nonhuman life. My most memorable learning experience was when I went as a part of a North Park group to the Standing Rock protests in North Dakota. I was able to not just learn in a classroom but participate in a community of people passionate about environmental justice and stand up for my convictions.
