RODEO EVENTS KEEP THE WEST ALIVE

With few exceptions, today's rodeo events have their roots in the daily activities of the Old West. Following is an explanation of events in the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

Steer Wrestling The concept seems straightforward enough --- drop from a horse, grab a steer by the horns, and wrestle it to the ground, stopping the clock as quickly as possible. Easily said; not easily done. In fact, steer wrestling is so difficult that consecutive titles in the sport are rare. Timing, technique and the horsemanship of the hazer, who guides the steer in a straight path for the cowboy, are primary necessities for this popular event. If the cowboy breaks the barrier, a 10 second penalty is tacked onto his time. Your One Stop Service Shop

Saddle Bronc Riding Rodeo's "classic" event was truly born in the Old West, where ranch cowboys would test themselves against one another and the rankest of unbroken horses. Not much has changed. A bronc rider must begin the ride with his feet placed over the bronc's shoulders, then synchronize his spurring action with the animals bucking style to receive a high score over an eight-second trip. Tie-down Roping A tie-down roping run begins with a mounted cowboy giving a head start to a calf, then chasing it down the arena. After roping the calf, the cowboy dismounts, runs alongside the rope (which is attached to the saddle horn and kept taut by the horse), flanks the calf onto its side, and ties any three legs

together with a "piggin' string" he carries clinched in his teeth. The calf must remain tied for six seconds. If the cowboy breaks the barrier, he receives a 10-second penalty. The event was previously called calf roping. Bull Riding This event is the easiest in the rodeo to understand, and maybe the most popular among fans. A cowboy tries to ride a bull for eight seconds while holding a simple rope looped around the bull's midsection. The rules aren't complicated: Cowboys can't touch the bull with their free hand or fall off before eight seconds have expired. It sounds simple. But with angry 1,500-pound bulls trying to throw the cowboys off--then stomp them into the arena dust-it's one of rodeo's most unpredictable and dangerous events. Barrel Racing Competitors on horseback race around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern and gallop back across the start-finish line. The fastest time wins, and times are recorded to the 1/100 second. Barrel racers are penalized five seconds for knocking down a barrel. This even is sanctioned by the Women's Professional Rodeo Association, while the other events are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

Bareback Riding This is one of the wildest and most physically demanding events in rodeo. Contestants must ride a bucking horse for eight seconds holding nothing but a single-handed rigging clinched around the horse's middle. A rider is disqualified if he touches his equipment, himself, or the animal with his free hand or if he is bucked off before eight seconds. Half of the cowboy's score comes from his spurring technique and "exposure" to the strength of the horse; the other half is determined by the bucking strength of the horse.

Team Roping Team roping requires precise timing and anticipation between header and heeler, making it rodeo's true team event. The header's job is to rope the steer around the horns, neck or a horn-neck combination, then turn the steer to the left so the heeler can ride in and rope both of the steer's hind legs. If the heeler catches only one leg, a five second penalty is assessed. If the header fails to give the steer its allotted head start, the team receives a 10-second penalty.

The Budke High School Motor-cross Chute out features a coach, principal or athletic director from area schools who will square off against another school's representative, as they race minibikes in the Wild West Rodeo Arena, during the Buffalo Bill Rodeo! The winner from each night of rodeo will advance to the finals on Sat., June 16, where they will race for $250 for their school's booster club. Wear your school colors and join in as the minibikes roar around the cloverleaf pattern!

NEBRASKAland DAYS CAKE BAKE MAKES NEW CHANGES Let the competition begin on Thursday June, 14 at 11am! The cake bake made numerous changes this year in hopes that there will be more competition, according to event chair Mary Thompson of the North Platte Hostesses. It will be moving from the Eagles Club to Shooters this year, allowing more room while the competitors creatively make their own invention of a winning cake. Teams can consist of all male, all female, or a mixed team. The public will be able to vote for their favorite cake at the auction, taking place on Friday June, 15 at 1:00pm. Lunch with the Wild Bunch will also take place there prior to the auction. For additional information go to www.nebraskalanddays.com.

Young cowboys participate in rodeo camp

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

By Ruth Nicolaus Buffalo Bill Rodeo Curtis, Neb.- Basketball players, football players, and volleyball players have camps at which to hone their skills. So where does a young buckaroo go to learn the fundamentals of rodeo? They go to the bi-annual Rodeo Camp, hosted by the Buffalo Bill Rodeo and the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. This year's camp was held March 10 in Curtis at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. Forty young cowboys, ranging in age from eight to the midtwenties, showed up for four hours of learning. They learned everything from how to set their equipment to how to get off on a pickup horse, to how to dismount from their bull when the buzzer sounds. Students came from Nebraska, Kansas and Wyoming. Clayton Cossairt, of Columbus, Kan., drove eight hours to attend the camp. The sophomore, who competes in Kansas high school rodeo, said the drive was worth it. "I had my (bronc) saddle set wrong, and (the instructor) helped me set it right. I always want to learn something, because everywhere I go, there's always something to learn." Jaden Clark, another camp attendee, didn't have as far to drive. The 17 year old, a junior at Medicine Valley High School in Curtis, focused on bareback and saddle bronc riding at the camp. He says he attends the camp "to get better, to review the things I may or may not know. I like being around cowboys." More importantly, for Jaden, the camp "was a good motivation day. If anything, I got reminded to set my goals. I've been slacking lately, as far as keeping things in order and being responsible." He competes in Nebraska high school rodeo. The three instructors were PRCA members, with two of them National Finals Rodeo qualifiers. Kelly Wardell, a four time NFR

qualifier, taught the bareback riding, and Fred Boettcher, a six time NFR qualifier, taught the bull riding. Jake Griffin instructed the saddle bronc riding. Before Boettcher retired from bull riding, teaching gave him an edge. It "made me fresher, and I went back to the basics." Now that he is no longer competing, "I like to pass on something that I'm passionate about, that I want to see go on. When I go to these camps, I want to see the next kids that go on to win a world championship or (compete) at the circuit finals." The camp was free to participants and their parents, and plans are to host the camp again in 2014.

North Platte, Neb. - June, 2012 - A new face replaces a fan favorite at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo this June. Bullfighter Wacey Munsell was hired to replace Greg Rumohr, who retired after 23 years of working the North Platte Rodeo. The 25 year old cowboy is no stranger to rodeos and arenas. He grew up in the shadow of his granddad, dad, and uncle, who either rode bareback horses, bulls, or worked as a bullfighter. When Wacey wasn't even two years old yet, he was helping his dad Doug, Jr. with his comedy acts as Doug worked as a bullfighter and clown. "He took me to quite a few of those rodeo weekends," Wacey remembers. At the time, the Munsell family, which included mom Lori, lived in Goodwell, Okla., and Doug worked rodeos in Texas, Kansas, and Nebraska. At age 13, Wacey went to Rex Dunn's bullfighting school. Since then, he has served as bullfighter at high school, college, and pro rodeos. This year, he'll

other places. The word "bullfighter" is a misnomer for the job these fearless men do in the arena. They do not fight bulls, as it is perceived in the Spanish world of matadors. Their job is to distract the bull, after each eight second ride, to give the bull rider time to scramble to the fence. And, in the instance that a wreck happens, the bullfighter steps in to protect the rider. Wacey graduated from Ulysses, Kan. High School, and earned his associate's degree in farm and ranch management from Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. He is honored to work such a prestigious event as the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. "It's a historic rodeo," he said. "It draws good contestants, and they have awesome crowds. It doesn't get any better than working with (announcers) Hadley (Barrett) and Randy (Corley)." Munsell will partner with fellow bullfighter Quirt Hunt to handle the duties for the 2012 rodeo. He and his wife Donna, who grew up in Texas as a stock contractor's daughter, have two daughters, ages 12 and 5.

SHARING THE LOVE (and the experience)

Ainsworth named community of the year for NEBRASKAland DAYS

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

By Ruth Nicolaus Buffalo Bill Rodeo Ainsworth, Neb. (May, 2012) NEBRASKAland DAYS people like to share the love. Every year, NLD organizers in North Platte choose a Nebraska community as a sister community, and residents of that town receive free admission to most major NLD events. This year, the residents of Ainsworth are the lucky "winners", and it's a good fit, says Graig Kinze, owner of Ainsworth radio stations KBRB AM and FM. "It's just a two hour drive (to North Platte). For years, we had a country music festival, so it's nice for the folks here to still have some of the bigger shows they can go to that are fairly close." This year's acts for NLD are country music superstar Toby Keith on June 22 and rock act Daughtry on June 23.

With roots tracing back to July 4, 1882, when North Platte requested William F. Cody to throw an unforgettable Fourth of July celebration, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo has evolved into a renowned western adventure. Following that first fateful performance of western entertainment, Cody discovered the value of showcasing the American cowboy. That early event has evolved into Nebraska's largest outdoor rodeo, recognized for its efforts by repeated nominations as the outdoor rodeo of the year and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in July, 2009. This years rodeo will also include Hall of Fame Inductee's Rodeo Announcer Hadley Barrett and Stock Contractor Bennie Buetler.

TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

By Ruth Nicolaus Buffalo Bill Rodeo

You have to be tough to ride a bull. But you have to be even tougher to fight cancer. And fans of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo will join hands with the Callahan Cancer Center to help those who are fighting cancer. For the seventh year, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte will host its Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on Thursday, June 14. Rodeo cowboys, personnel, and committee people will wear pink to show their support of the fight against cancer. Fans are also asked to wear pink. In the last six years, $3600 has been raised to help those with the disease. The money is given to the Callahan

CARNIVAL Moore's Greater Shows Carnival returns to NEBRASKAland DAYS for the 3rd straight year. And they will have specials almost every day. The carnival specials this year are as follows: 20 dollar wristbands on June 14 and on June 20 with 2 cans of food. All canned food will be donated to local food pantries. The wristbands are 25 dollars on June 15, 16, 20, 22, and 23. During the Kids Fun Festival on June 19 all rides are just one dollar a piece.

"Whether we buy a piece of equipment or make an improvement to the cancer center, we use it for the good of the patients." With last year's poor economy, the funds were used to help cancer patients who couldn't provide for themselves. "We bought gas cards for a patient who drove three hours one way to get treatment," Feagler said. The money also bought a lymphoma sleeve for a

T-shirts, jelly bracelets and other pink merchandise will be for sale at the Wild West Arena rodeo grounds. Volunteers will pass the plate through the crowd to pick up donations. "We feel it's a worthy endeavor," said David Fudge, Executive Director of NEBRASKAland DAYS. "I would wager to bet there's at least one person in everybody's life who has been touched by cancer. Anything we can do to give back to the cause is a worthy thing to do."

MARK SWINGLER

Specialty Act Mark Swingler

By Ruth Nicolaus Buffalo Bill Rodeo Mark Swingler has done a little bit of everything in the rodeo world. The rodeo clown and barrelman will serve as entertainment for the 2012 Buffalo Bill Rodeo. But he's also been a bull rider, a bullfighter, and has even served in executive council positions with the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. Swingler, from Austin, Texas, rode bulls and bareback horses in high school, and even tried to rope calves. But it was the calf roping that turned him into a rodeo clown. "I started clowning because my roping was a joke," he laughs. He loves to entertain rodeo fans and brings a variety of acts with him: his 1927 Model T with a YMCA Act; the original moonwalk; UPS delivery man, and hot dog vendor. No matter what act he's doing, he loves to make people laugh. "I enjoy the fans, watching people kick back for a couple of hours, letting their worries go away, and having fun. That keeps me going." This is not Swingler's first time to North Platte. About five years ago, he worked the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and he has good memories of that trip. "I enjoy coming back. It's always fun to come back to different parts of the country

and watch people have a good time." Swingler's 2011 rodeo season was entitled the "Daughter in College Tour," as he joked about paying for his daughter's tuition at Texas Tech. This year, he's called his 2012 season "Needin' Readin' Glasses" and laughs that he's "finally reached that age, and you can get a three-pack of reading glasses at Wal-Mart for a buck." Swingler remembers his last trip to North Platte and an incident in the arena. The fighting bull hooked Hadley Barrett when he was on horseback, and Hadley ended up on the ground. "Everybody ran," towards Hadley, Swingler remembered. "Luckily, when Hadley bucked off, the horse was between Hadley and the bull, and the bull never saw Hadley. It got everybody on their toes pretty quick." Swingler will do his comedy acts during each performance of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at the Wild West Arena in North Platte June 13-16. 2011 BUFFALO BILL RODEO CHAMPIONS Bareback riding champion - Jared Smith

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

The 23 year old cowboy rode Beutler and Son Rodeo Co.'s bareback horse Wonderland for 87 points and a check for $2,565. It wasn't Smith's first trip on the horse, but it was his best. In 2010, he drew Wonderland during the short go-round of the Austin, Texas rodeo, where he scored 79 points, which placed, but didn't provide a first place finish. His ride in North Platte was better. "She really bucked that day," he recalled. "I just kind of kept up with her, and she got most of the points." Smith, who lives in Cross Plains, Texas, grew up in Florida but moved to the Lone Star State to be closer to more rodeos. When he's not on the rodeo road, he shoes horses, and enjoys hog hunting. Last year was Smith's third time to compete at the North Platte rodeo. Jared Smith PRCA ProRodeo Photo/Mike Copeman

Saddle bronc riding co-champion - Steven Dent Saddle bronc rider Steven Dent got a bit of revenge at last year's Buffalo Bill Rodeo. For the second time, he had the chance to ride Dirty Joke, the bronc that bucked him off at the Austin, Texas rodeo in early 2011. But Dent made an 83 point ride on the bronc this time, to share the co-champion title. He was complimentary towards the horse. "He was a lot nicer in North Platte than I thought he'd be." Dent is no stranger to the Wild West Arena. He's competed there in high school rodeo, and at the pro rodeo five or six times, he estimated. The Mullen, Neb. cowboy also competes in the bareback riding, and has won money in that event in North Platte three times, including last year, when he tied for second place with an 86 point ride. Saddle bronc riding is his favorite, though. "I like bronc riding a little bit better but I usually win more in the bareback riding." He and his wife Kay live on a ranch near Mullen, where they help out with Steven's parent's ranch and run cows of their own south of town. For Dent, North Platte is a hometown rodeo, and his family, friends, and neighbors come to see him ride. "North Platte is the closest big town to us. It's dang sure the closest (pro) rodeo. There's usually quite a few people from Mullen there." Dent has competed at four National Finals Rodeos.

Saddle bronc riding co-champion - Luke Rush Luke Rush was riding on a borrowed saddle when he scored 83 points to tie for first place in the saddle bronc riding at the 2011 Buffalo Bill Rodeo. The Clay Center, Kan. cowboy was supposed to be first out, but after his horse, Night Moves, rared up and caught his saddle on the slide gate, the riggings broke. So he borrowed a saddle from another bronc rider, and he was the last to ride. It was Rush's first year to compete in North Platte, and only his third year in the PRCA. He grew up roping calves, qualifying for the National High School Finals Rodeo three years in the tie-down roping. He didn't start riding broncs till college at Garden City (Kan. Community College, then at Ft. Hays (Kan.) State University. Rush liked the Beutler and Son Rodeo horse he'd drawn. "She's a nice horse with some power, no dirties in her. She lets you do your thing." The 30 year old cowboy trains roping and working cow horses when he's not on the rodeo trail.

Bull riding champion - Danny Schlobohm Bull rider Danny Schlobohm's 88 point ride at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo won him the 2011 title and a check for $3,249. The Lamonte, Missouri cowboy competed in PBR events before getting his PRCA card last year. He qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in 2002 and 2003, and for a while, was in the PBR's elite Built Ford Tough Series. He had never seen the Beutler and Son bull Classic Red, but he friends filled him in. "I didn't know the bull, but my buddies told me I'd love him. He shot out (of the chute), turned to the right, I stepped off of him, and I knew I was going to win it." Danny competed on Thursday, but with the rodeo not complete till Saturday night, he went home. While home, he watched old National Finals Rodeo tapes. "I saw (the bull) on there, and saw Tyler Smith win a go-round on him at the NFR (in 2010). He was 90 points on him and I was 88," Danny laughed. He hopes to enter the North Platte rodeo again this year. "Beutler has a good pen of bulls and that rodeo pays real well."

Steer wrestling champion - Ronnie Fields

Tie-down roping champion - Hunter Herrin Hunter Herrin is getting used to picking up checks in North Platte. The tie-down roper from Apache, Okla., won the rodeo in 2011, 2010, and was runner-up in 2009. Last year, his combined time of 18.5 seconds on two head earned him a total of $3,271. He rode a nine year old quarter horse named Hustler, who was also his mount for the 2011 National Finals Rodeo. Last year was the first year Herrin used him. "I'm glad to be fortunate enough to ride a good one." Herrin has competed at five NFRs, and is the 2011 Prairie Circuit Finals average and all around winner. When he pulls in to the Wild West Arena lot, "it usually rains," Herrin joked. But "there are some places a guy has continuously good luck at, and for me, it's North Platte. It's been a good spot." He is married, with a five year old son. Hunter Herrin PRCA ProRodeo Photo/Mike Copeman

Charles Pogue PRCA ProRodeo Photo/James Phifer

Walt Woodard PRCA ProRodeo Photo/Mike Copeman

Team roping champions - Charles Pogue and Walt Woodard Ropers Charles Pogue and Walt Woodard teamed up to win the average at the 2011 Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Their two runs combined for 13.1 seconds to win them a total of $3,284 each. Pogue, Ringling, Okla., has competed since he was eight years old. He's been to twelve National Finals Rodeos and more Prairie Circuit Finals than he can keep track of, ending several years as Prairie Circuit champion. Now that his daughters are involved in their own activities, Pogue stays closer to home, roping at circuit rodeos and teaching others how to rope. He gives private lessons near his home, and flies to Utah every other month for lessons. He's taught at roping schools across the nation, and is part of the group of team ropers that hosts the TotalTeamRoping.com website. In addition to his roping, the 46 year old cowboy has a realtor's license and specializes in ranch and horse properties. He and his wife Londa's daughters are ages 11 and three. Pogue's partner Walt Woodard made history at last year's North Platte rodeo. Unofficially, he's the only contestant to win the same rodeo, thirty years apart. Woodard, Stephenville, Texas, competed at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in 1981, winning the gold buckle. And he repeated the feat last year, with header Charles Pogue, to win a second North Platte buckle, thirty years later. Today, both buckles sit side by side in his trophy room, and he gets a kick out of people's amazement at his accomplishment. But Woodard has accomplished more in his rodeo career. He is the PRCA's 1981 and 2007 World Champion Team Roper, and has twenty National Finals Rodeo qualifications, with 2011 being his most current. At last year's NFR, he was the oldest contestant at age 56, but it doesn't bother him. "It means nothing to me," he said. "It doesn't help you. I wish I was 25, roping against those guys. The guys I rope against are so fast, so young, you have to go at it like you're 25. You still have to have a good work ethic and a good attitude. Age is not a factor." Woodard enjoys competing in North Platte. "The ground is always great. They do a great job. It's always been an enjoyable rodeo for me to go to." He and his wife have a son, Travis, who is 27 and also a team roper.

Ronnie Fields PRCA ProRodeo Photo/Mike Copeman

For Ronnie Fields, and many other contestants, the North Platte rodeo kicks off their busy summer season. And for Fields, a steer wrestler from Oklahoma City, it was a great way to start his summer. He won the average at the 2011 Buffalo Bill Rodeo with a time of 9.0 seconds on two head, and for his efforts, cashed a check for $3,122. He travels with Nebraska cowboy Dean Gorsuch, and they usually meet in North Platte before hitting the rodeo trail. "We start there, I meet up with Dean, and we go off for the summer. We'll leave to go to Reno (Nevada)." Fields, who married four years ago, knows his full time rodeo days are coming to an end once he and his wife have children. "For me, once kids are in place, rodeo will probably back off drastically." He plans on continuing to compete but staying closer to home. He has competed at North Platte since 2002, and even when his family situation slows down his rodeo schedule, he'll come to North Platte. "Even after I'm done rodeoing full time, it's a great circuit rodeo for me. It's one of the top rodeos we have in our circuit." Fields has competed at three National Finals Rodeos and won the average at the 2004 NFR.

Barrel racing champion- Rachael Reichenberg

A local cowgirl is the 2011 barrel racing champion for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Rachael Reichenberg, who lives just twelve miles from North Platte, in Hershey, Neb, was thrilled to be crowned champion with her 17.27 second run. "It's extra special, very sweet," she said. "It was exciting to be so close to home, to have everybody, the people at the feed store, your shoer, everybody tell you, 'oh, yeah, I was at the pro rodeo this weekend,'" and see her win. Reichenberg rode her horse Mijo, out of Dash for Cash. "He worked really, really good. I remember flipping my reins over his head on the second barrel, but he worked good and ran fast." Even her neighbors were aware of her 2011 title. "The week after, my neighbor stopped by and said, 'it was so cool to see you win.' Now they know why you drive 12 hours to go to a rodeo." Reichenberg plans on entering the 2012 North Platte rodeo. "It's fun to win a rodeo, but it's really fun to do it at home."

National Finals Rodeo. Mackenzie will travel more than 100,000 miles during her reign representing Miss Rodeo America, Inc. and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association. “Miss Rodeo America is a spokeswoman for western heritage, embodying and exemplifying the qualities of self-reliance, bravery and true grit to the utmost capability” Carr said. “I am so blessed to be the first Oregonian to have the prestigious honor and privilege of serving as Miss Rodeo America.” Mackenzie graduated from Lower Columbia College with an Associate of Arts degree in Speech Communications and will later transfer back to Oregon State University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management Engineering with a minor in Speech Communications. She will be able to use the $26,000 in scholarships she was awarded as Miss Rodeo America from the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation to help further her educational goals. When Mackenzie isn’t promoting the sport of rodeo either in or out of the arena, she enjoys cooking, singing and playing the piano. She also loves to dig it up and slam it down on the volleyball court, riding, training horses and giving riding lessons to young children. She is excited about the prospect of spending 2012 traveling across the country being a role model for people of all ages, remaining a cowgirl to the core and promoting the Miss Rodeo America organization as well as our great sponsors! Carr will be in North Platte June 4-7 for the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant. The public will have many opportunities during that time to meet her and get her autograph.

horses, the Meyers ranch. The Meyer Triangle L Ranch is in the third generation of the family, and horses run in the family. Lynn and his wife Linda have five grandkids, and "they were all horseback from the minute they were big enough to straddle a saddle horse." Meyer's son partners on the ranch. A daughter and her husband live on the ranch, and a second daughter lives in Arizona. Meyer is proud of being a recipient of the Dale Studley award, given annually to a NEBRASKALand Days volunteer who gives selflessly of his time and talent. He received the award in 2006. "I felt quite honored," he said. "It made the front page of the paper. A small town boy, from Maxwell, getting in the local paper. That's good." Meyer and his fifth wheel hitch wagon will be at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo June 13-16 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in the lower grandstand and $13 for adults and $7 for upper grandstand seats. They are available online at or through the www.nebraskalanddays.com NEBRASKALand DAYS office at 888-313-5606. For more information, visit www.nebraskalanddays.com.

NEBRASKAland DAYS AND THE 2012 BUFFALO BILL RODEO GUIDE

North Platte, Neb. - June, 2012 - Lynn Meyer is a collector of beautiful old horse drawn vehicles. And every June, he gets to put one of them to work, carrying dignitaries at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. Meyer, Maxwell, Neb., has been driving a fifth wheel hitch wagon, pulled by a team of four horses, into the Wild West Arena in North Platte for at least the last twenty years, he estimates. His freight? The sailors from the USS Nebraska, stationed at Bangor, Wash., who are guests of NEBRASKALand DAYS. The Meyer family, beginning with Lynn's dad, Cliff, has been in the draft horse business since 1961. Lynn's dad, and then Lynn, fed hay in the winter and stacked it in the summer with six head of horses. The Meyers have shown draft horses since the early 1960's, and also compete in farm draft shows across the nation. Meyer has collected a variety of horse drawn vehicles over the years. His collection includes a chuckwagon, a one-horse driving cart, and a farm wagon. The Buffalo Bill Rodeo isn't the only place where he drives a team of horses. He often participates in the NEBRASKALand Days parade, and drives the Cozad Chamber of Commerce Yellowstone Touring Coach for parades in Sutherland and Maxwell and for the opening of the dress horse classes at the Nebraska State Fair. For the last fifteen years, he's driven the farm wagon for the Nebraska State Corn Picking Contest. The fifth wheel hitch wagon that Meyer uses to carry the USS Nebraska sailors is about 100 years old. He found it near Bridgeport, Neb. with original hardware, rebuilt the wheels and put on a new wooden box and chrome rails. Meyer drives the wagon in the arena during the Friday and Saturday nights of rodeo and loves hauling the sailors. "It's quite an honor for us to haul them," he said. "I've always felt real privileged to get the job of hauling them." Meyer said the North Platte people love recognizing the sailors. "This area is especially patriotic. North Platte takes good care of them, and the crowd sure seems to enjoy seeing the sailors." In addition to his hobby of raising and showing draft

MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST

A NEBRASKAland DAYS Original event comes home for 2012. The Mayor's Prayer Breakfast returns to NLD, and features an excellent speaker. "The prayer breakfast is a chance for the community to come together to give worship and give thanks," said Chuck Scriptor, the event coordinator of the prayer breakfast. This is an original NebraskaLand Days event that takes place on Thursday June, 14 at 7am at the Salvation Army. This year, the breakfast will feature Tom Osborne as the speaker. Chuck explained that, "since the beginning, the prayer breakfast has been the opening celebration to kick off NebraskaLand Days. Tom Osborne's availability was open for the second week this year, hence why the time is changed." You will not want to miss this event, so come on out for an enjoyable time! Tickets are $10.

The barrelman and comedy act for the 2012 Buffalo Bill Rodeo is Mark Swingler. The Austin, Texas cowboy will make rodeo fans laugh with his YMCA Model T, hot dog vendor, UPS delivery man, and original moonwalk acts. He's been entertaining rodeo fans since 1993, and this is his second trip to North Platte. Swingler likes to name his yearly rodeo tours. Last year, because his daughter was a college freshman, it was "Daughter in College Tour." The 2012 tour is "Needin' Readin' Glasses" tour. He laughs about it: "I finally reached that age (to need glasses). I've been putting it off." In addition to working in the arena, he has served in leadership roles in the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors for four years and the contract personnel executive council for five years. "The association has given me a good career. I feel you ought to give back." Swingler has good friends in North Platte, and he is anxious to work the Buffalo Bill Rodeo again. "I like North Platte, and I'm looking forward to coming back." For more information, visit his website at www.markswingler.com.

A new face replaces an old fan favorite at the 2012 Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Bullfighter Wacey Munsell, Ulysses, Kan., fills in for Greg Rumohr, who retired last year. Munsell, 25, is the third generation of his family to be involved in rodeo. His granddad, dad, and uncle either rode bareback horses, bulls, or worked as bullfighters. When Wacey was just two years old, he was helping his dad with comedy acts at rodeos. When he was 13, Wacey attended a Rex Dunn bullfighting school. Since then, he's worked high school rodeos, college rodeos, and in 2004, got his Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association card. He'll work rodeos in Denver, Tucson, Austin, Texas, Dodge City, Kan., and North Platte this year, among others, and he's thrilled to come to North Platte. "It's an historic rodeo," he said. "It doesn't get any better than working with (announcers) Hadley (Barrett) and Randy (Corley)."

Livestock Provider For the 65th year, Beutler semi-trailers, trucks, and livestock trailers will leave Elk City, Oklahoma, get on Highway 83, and head north to North Platte, Nebraska. Beutler and Son Rodeo Co., in its 90th year of existence, has been providing livestock to the Buffalo Bill Rodeo for over two-thirds of those years. Elra, Jake and Lynn founded the business, and now Bennie and his son Rhett, the third and fourth generations of Beutlers, will be in North Platte with their bucking horses and bulls. Rhett, who is 35, has been coming to North Platte for the past dozen years, and he enjoys the town and the rodeo. "The committee is a great group of guys, and it's a good set-up. That time of year, the weather is usually nice, and it's fun to hear the 'Platte Valley thunder', when the fans bang on the bleachers. They fill 'em up on Friday and Saturday nights, and Randy (Corley) gets 'em going." The Beutlers provide bucking horses and bulls for about 25 events a year, and have had animals selected to buck at the Wrangler National Finals nearly every year of its existence. Bennie is a 2010 inductee into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs. For more information, visit www.BeutlerandSonRodeo.com.

North Platte resident Quirt Hunt will serve as a bullfighter at the 2012 Buffalo Bill Rodeo. The 33 year old bullfighter grew up near Merna, Neb., graduating from AnselmoMerna High School in 1996. He competed in high school rodeo as a bareback rider and bull rider, but it wasn't his cup of tea. His calling was protecting bull riders. Quirt broke into the pro rodeo world in 2002, and since then, has worked such prestigious rodeos and Pro Bull Riders events including Prescott, Ariz., Denver, Colo., Rodeo Austin (Texas), Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, and the PBR World Cup Finals. He likes being in the arena with bulls from the Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. "A lot of Bennie's (Beutler) bulls have heat to them. I get along great with his bulls. They fit my style of fighting. An aggressive bullfighter, a guy who will really get in there and get ahold of the bulls will get along, because his bulls will all come to you." Quirt and his wife Amber have two daughters, ages four and two. The older girl loves it that her daddy is a bullfighter, and thinks all daddies go to work at rodeos. "She doesn't know any different," Quirt said. "She thinks it's cool."

Randy Corley has been calling the play-by-play at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo since 1982. The Silverdale, Wash. man is no stranger to North Platte. He grew up in Lusk, Wyo., and spent several years working as the morning DJ on KODY before becoming a rodeo announcer. Corley has won the PRCA's Announcer of the Year award 11 times, including last year, and the humble man joked about the honor. "Somebody got the voting machine stuck," he laughed. Now that the couple's four kids are grown and gone from home, his wife Michelle often travels with him, working as a rodeo timer. "My life has gotten so much better because Michelle goes with me nearly all of the time. It's rejuvenated what I do." They have been married for 27 years, and "she happens to be my best friend, still. You find out pretty quick if you're best friends when you stay in a fifth wheel or motel room together," he laughed. He will announce alongside his father-inlaw, Hadley Barrett, and he loves working with him. "He's just super as an announcer. There will never be anybody who can touch him, on how great he is."

Hadley Barrett Pro Rodeo Announcer Hadley Barrett is a legend in North Platte. He was born and raised in the area, and began announcing the Buffalo Bill Rodeo a year before he even had a PRCA announcer's card. Old timers remember Hadley in a different role - as front liner for the band Hadley Barrett and the Westerners. They traveled through the Midwest, entertaining with their brand of country music. The PRCA Hall of Fame member got his start in rodeo when the announcer at the Arnold, Neb. rodeo got sick. The committee asked him to announce, and it started from there. In 1964, the chairman of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo told the Rodeo Cowboys Association (predecessor to the PRCA) that Hadley was going to announce his rodeo, even though he didn't have his RCA card yet. The RCA informed him that Hadley couldn't. The chairman told the board that the North Platte rodeo would not be sanctioned by the RCA if Hadley wasn't allowed to announce, and "that got everybody off their dead center," Hadley remembers. "In fact, I still have the letter in my files that gave approval" for him to announce without an RCA card. He and his son-in-law Randy Corley work together at about six rodeos a year, and they enjoy it. "He's good to work with, and we understand each other. We were good friends before he married my daughter, and we made a vow to not let marriage screw up the friendship. It hasn't." Hadley now lives in Greeley, Colo. with his wife Lee. He has three children and ten grandchildren.
