Rail Fest to take a step back in time Telegraph, commemorative knives among historic touches By HEATHER JOHNSON hjohnson@nptelegraph.com

Rail Fest 2011 attendees prepare for a ride around Cody Park on the UP mini-train during the celebration in September 2011. The mini-train and other popular Rail Fest attractions will return again this year, along with new events such as a fireworks display and birthday cake celebrating Union Pacific Railroad’s 150th birthday.

Celebration station 2012 Rail Fest will honor North Platte’s railroad heritage, UP’s 150th year By ANDREW BOTTRELL abottrell@nptelegraph.com

Union Pacific Railroad and North Platte have a very unique relationship. This weekend, the two will celebrate 150 years of Union Pacific and North Platte’s partnership during the fifth annual Rail Fest with the Star-Spangled Spectacular fireworks display and a giant birthday cake social. “North Platte, I think, is the quintessential railroad town,” said Brenda Mainwaring, UPRR director of public relations for Nebraska and Iowa. “Such a large portion of the population works for, did work for or has relatives that work for UP. someone “There’s around every dinner table that has ties to UP, Mainwaring added. “We don’t have that in very many communities. Where we do have that, we want to make sure we celebrate it with the community.” Union Pacific will present a giant birthday cake for the community from 6-8 p.m. in Cody Park on Saturday to help celebrate Rail Fest and the company’s 150th anniversary. After dusk, the celebration will be capped off by a fireworks display. “We have really staged our 150th activities to collaborate with communities,” Mainwaring said. “Rail Fest was obviously a great fit.” Mainwaring praised Rail Fest, calling it a unique festival.

“Rail Fest keeps getting bigger and bigger every year. It’s the only Union Pacific-oriented festival of its kind,” she said. “It’s very organic — the community has created it and it gets bigger every year.” Union Pacific will also sponsor mini-train rides, as well as having the historic UP 844 steam engine on display throughout the weekend. People will also be able to take tours of Bailey Yard, including a museum car. “People who take the bus out to Bailey Yard will be able to climb aboard the museum car and get a little taste of the history we display at our museum in Council Bluffs,” Mainwaring said. Rail Fest Chairman Dave Harrold said a birthday celebration for Union Pacific, with a display, fireworks seemed to be the perfect fit. “All of our entertainment, we want it to look

like a wedding reception, where grandchildren and grandparents are all out there at the same time,” Harrold said. “Fireworks were the perfect way to do that.” Harrold said with Union Pacific dating back to the 1860s, and the historical ties between the end of the Civil War and the transcontinental railroad, a patriotic theme

seemed inevitable. He also said Union Pacific has been recognized nationally for hiring veterans. “How do you [celebrate] all those things at one time — it just seems like fireworks is just perfect,” he said.

Visitors to this year’s Rail Fest celebration will take a step back in time thanks to a unique, historical display that has been added. A telegraph line has been set up at the train depot exhibit at the southeast corner of Cody Park, 1402 N. Jeffers St. According to Jim Griffin, Lincoln County Historical Museum director, a telegrapher will be stationed inside the building throughout Rail Fest, demonstrating how the antiquated system of communication used to work. “It’s just another great activity to showcase the railroad,” Griffin said. “The telegraph came across just before the Union Pacific Railroad. It became instrumental in keeping trains on schedule and helping them to not run into one another. The line basically became the life link for all the people out here in rural Nebraska.” According to Griffin, a permanent telegraph line is set up at the historical museum, 2403 N. Buffalo Bill Ave. “I can’t prove it, but I think it’s the shortest in the world,” he said. “It goes in one end of our building and out the other.” Wire and posts from the original transcontinental line are also on display at the historical museum. “The Creighton brothers started that,” Griffin said. “The

Union Pacific Railroad ended up following basically the same path.” According to information from the Nebraska State Historical Society, Edward Creighton, an Ohio native, was one of the most successful businessmen of Irish ancestry to settle in Nebraska. His younger brother John worked for him, according to Griffin. In 1858, Edward assisted in building a telegraph line from St. Joseph, Mo. to Omaha, which gave Omaha its first connection by telegraph to the east coast. He visualized the construction of a line that stretched even further west, and in 1860 was commissioned to survey, by stagecoach and muleback, a route between the Missouri River and the Pacific Coast. “People started putting in orders for them last year,” Griffin said. “Five were reserved ahead of time, and a banker bought another 15 about three weeks ago.” That leaves only two, which will be raffled. Tickets can be purchased for $5 each at the museum or at the Rail Fest information booth at the main entrance to Cody Park. Griffin said one knife was made in honor of the Canteen and the other is in recognition of the UPRR’s 150th anniversary. Two knives from 2011 are also still for sale at a cost of $200 each. the building of a telegraph line from Julesburg, Colo., to Salt Lake City, Utah, where it connected with a line built by the California-based Pacific Telegraph Company. Edward became the first general superintendent of the company, but resigned in 1867. He later built a line from Salt Lake City to Montana. Edward invested both in PTC and in a freighting company which operated from Omaha to Denver, then to Salt Lake City, and to the Montana gold fields. He also contracted for grading for the UPRR. In 1864, Edward became a cattleman near Laramie, Wyo., and supplied beef to UPRR construction crews. According to Ann Milton, Rail Fest committee member, the telegraph recreation at the depot will be open to the public on Friday from 2-6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4

This year’s Rail Fest celebration in North Platte is historical for a number of reasons. For train buffs it might be the appearance of the entire line of Union Pacific Heritage Locomotives. All six locomotives, representing the six lines that were merged into the Union Pacific across the company’s history will be on display near the diesel shop at Bailey Yard Friday through Sunday. “We’ve never had all six of them together at one time,” said David Thalken, with Union Pacific. “We brought them here, cleaned them up, and they will be on the west side of the shop.” The six locomotives represent the Chicago and North Western Railroad, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas

Railroad, the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Western Pacific Railroad. Those six engines are also joined by the commemorative Boy Scout 100th Anniversary Locomotive and the Breast Cancer Awareness locomotive. Union Pacific will also have on display the newest engine in UP’s fleet, the 5,000th General Electric Evolution Series Locomotive, as well as Locomotive No. 844, the UP’s historical steam engine. “We’ll have the oldest, the newest and the engines that made up the railroad,” Thalken said. The six commemorative engines were built in the mid-1990s, and display the flagship colors of each of the six different rail-

roads that incorporated into the Union Pacific fleet. “Having them all in one place for the first time is a very significant event. North Platte and Rail Fest will reap the benefits of that,” said Brenda Mainwaring, UPRR director of public relations for Nebraska and Iowa.

Chicago and North Western Railroad

In 2006, UP unveiled the green, yellow and white Chicago and North Western Railroad commemorative engine No. 1995 at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago on July 15. It is the fifth unit in the heritage fleet. The Chicago and North Western Railroad serviced Chicago commuters, as well as the iron mines of Michigan and the coal fields of Illinois, and was the first railroad to connect with Union Pacific at

Council Bluffs in 1867. The Chicago and North Western also partnered with UP in 1984 to open a line between the coal fields in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, and 11 years later the two companies merged. A predecessor of the Chicago and North Western Railway, the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad Company, constructed the Cowboy line in the 1870s and 1880s that serviced Nebraska northern from Norfolk to Chadron.

Missouri-KansasTexas Railroad Highlighted by its bright red and maroon paint scheme, with pink highlights and a white star on the front of the engine, the MissouriKansas-Texas Railroad commemorative No. 1988 was issued in September 2005. The commemorative train runs on routes originally

used by the Katy — the unofficial name for the line. The Katy was commissioned in 1865 and initially had lines extending from Missouri and Kansas down through Arkansas and Oklahoma into Texas. By 1988, when it was incorporated into the Union Pacific, the Katy served six Midwestern states. The line served an important role in the coal shipping business, while in operation, as a connection between the upper Midwest and the southwest. The line is the namesake for Katy Trail State Park in Missouri, which roughly follows the original line for 240 miles beginning in St. Louis, and is open to hikers, joggers and cyclists.

Missouri Pacific Railroad Adorned in two-tone blue and white, the Union Pacific introduced its No. 1982, a commemorative engine from the 1940s celebrating the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 2005 in Omaha. The streamliner-esque locomotive features the screaming eagle graphic introduced by the Missouri Pacific in the 1960s on their passenger trains. The Missouri Pacific was commissioned in 1849 in St. Louis, and a ground-breaking ceremony was on July 4, 1851 in St. Louis. The rail company had lines extending through Missouri, Colorado, Ne-

braska, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana, and passenger routes in the south-central portion of the country. In 1982 the Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific merged, and in 1997 the Missouri Pacific legally merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.

To celebrate California’s Southern Pacific Railroad, Union Pacific introduced UP No. 1996 in 2006, the last of its commemorative engines, in stately red and black. Founded in San Francisco in 1865, the original Southern Pacific rails took trains from San Francisco to San Diego. Eventually the line carried freight and passengers along the western seaboard from Seattle to San Diego and Mexico

City. A line from San Diego into Texas and on to New Orleans was also established in the late 1800s. One of the distinct features of the Southern Pacific Railroad was the Great Tehachapi Loop descending into the San Joaquin Valley in California where one train would curve back on itself as it descended the switchbacks. The Southern Pacific incorporated the Central Pacific Railroad in 1959, and merged with Union Pacific in 1996.

Western Pacific Railroad UP No. 1983 was introduced in Omaha in July 2005, with a distinct orange, green and grey paint pattern, to commemorate the final paint scheme that Western Pacific introduced in the 1970s. From 1910 to 1982, Western Pacific operated from San Francisco to Salt Lake City and into Colorado. It was incorporated into Union Pacific in 1983. The most famous aspect of the Western Pacific Railroad was the California Zephyr passenger train, which ran from Chicago to San Francisco and operated jointly by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and Western Pacific.

Canteen spirit still lives on in North Platte By DIANE WETZEL dwetzel@nptelegraph.com

What happened in North Platte during World War II really was the best America there ever was, said author and CNN contributor Bob Greene. “Back in the 1942, no one told the people of North Platte that they had to do what they did — and if they hadn’t done it, no one would have ever known. But they did do it — and they made millions of soldiers forever grateful. Day after day, night after night, every day of the war, the people of North Platte were there to meet every train and greet every soldier,” Greene wrote in an email celebrating the 70th anniversary of the day a group of people in North Platte collected food and gifts and gathered at the Union Pacific Railroad depot in North Platte to meet

a troop train. The train, it was thought, was full of local National Guard members passing through on their way to war. Even though the train was filled with soldiers from Kansas, not Nebraska, the gifts and food were distributed and the Canteen was born. Greene wrote the best selling book, “Once Upon A Town” about the North Platte Canteen. More than five years later, the Canteen closed its doors after serving more than 6 million servicemen and women who traveled across the country. The North Platte Community Playhouse will present the “Canteen Spirit Experience” in conjunction with the 2012 Rail Fest Celebration again this year. The event will feature showings of the NET file “The

Canteen Spirit” and a panel of volunteers and service men and women who experienced the Canteen. “The Canteen is a big part of North Platte’s history and part of the railroad history,” said Rob Martinson, who is one of the organizers of the event. “This event is another way to keep the story going, even though every day we are losing people who were veterans of WWII and Canteen volunteers.” The Canteen Spirit Experience will be Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. Each session will begin with a showing of the film, followed by a panel discussion. A “canteen authentic” meal will be served after each session. The event is a fundraiser for the Playhouse. Cost is $5 per person. On Sunday, Mayor Marc Kaschke will present Canteen Spirit Awards to North Platte resident Chuck Scripter and Ainsworth middle school student Vanessa Taylor. “I think Chuck volunteers more hours than a lot of us work in our regular jobs,” Kaschke said. “He pours his heart into everything he does and if something needs to be done, he is the first one in line.” Taylor is the Nebraska winner of the “Salute to Freedom Award” sponsored by the National World War II Museum for her essay on the Canteen. She and her family will be in North Platte on Sunday to receive the award.

Grand Island is the latest Nebraska town to be named to Union Pacific Railroad’s Train Town USA registry. The designation is part of UPRR’s yearlong 150th anniversary celebration. According to a press release, the community received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Jim Young, UPRR chairman. A description of the town’s historical connection with the railroad will also be featured on www.up150.com. According to the website, the registry is a way to recognize longstanding community relationships. It’s open to all incorporated towns along UPRR tracks or terminals. Grand Island joins Nebraska communities Omaha and North Platte, which received the honor in May, on the list. Mark Davis, UPRR spokesman, said a total of 48 towns across the U.S. have received the designation and said more will be added to the registry throughout the year. “We are proud to recognize Grand Island as we commemorate our railroad’s sesquicentennial celebration and growing up together,”

said Brenda Mainwaring, UPRR director of public affairs for Nebraska. “Union Pacific has been part of the country’s fabric throughout the railroad’s 150-year history. That bond between us and the nearly 7,300 communities we serve continues to strengthen.” The original transcontinental railroad went through Grand Is-

land in July 1866, according to the press release. Located 146 miles west of the UPRR starting point at Council Bluffs, Iowa, Grand Island became a major locomotive and crew change point. A depot and maintenance shops were constructed and enlarged Please see GI, Page D8

Riley family remembers groundbreaking engineer Telegraph staff reports

Among the thousands of people who will be attending the 2012 Rail Fest Celebration this weekend will be Deb Riley of North Platte. husband Riley’s William died on Sept. 18, 2011. At the time of his death he was working as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. He became the first African-American hired to work at Bailey Yard in North Platte in 1968. “Bill was from the era of the late 1960s and had seen a lot of racial hatred and violence,” Deb Riley said. “He was pretty quiet about being the first African-American hired until after he had been inducted into the Golden Spike Hall of Fame.” Riley was among the inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fame. “He was a very humble man and was very proud of the honor,” she said.

Before his death, Riley was a supporter of Rail Fest. “He adored working for the railroad and he loved trains,” Riley said. In an interview in 2010, Riley talked about his role in breaking the color barrier. He grew up in Valentine and moved to North Platte after high school. “I didn’t even know I was black until I came to North Platte,” he said at the time. “All the blacks and Mexicans were on the north side of town and on the other side were the whites.”

Hired by the UPRR the same year as the assissination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Riley remained the only African American on the railroad in North Platte for 10 years. Riley was a graduate of North Platte VoTech with degrees in automotive and carpentry. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. “He was a quiet man,” Deb Riley said. “While the life of an engineer is hard, where they are always on call with no actual schedule, the railroad provided a very good life for us.”

over time as the city prospered steadily from the commerce and convenient transportation provided by the railroad. A roundhouse offered local employment as workers carried out repairs and maintenance on the steam locomotives. At its peak in the 1920s, the roundhouse consisted of 40 stalls where locomotives were serviced. A second main line track was built through the community in 1900. “Our shared heritage with Grand Island is a source of pride as we remember our past while serving and connecting our nation for years to come,” Main-

waring said. It was 150 years ago that Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act of July 1, 1862, creating UPRR. Today, it is the principal opercompany of ating Union Pacific Corporation, linking 23 states in the western twothirds of the country by rail and providing freight solutions and logistics expertise to the global supply chain. From 2000 through 2011, Union Pacific spent more than $31 billion on its network and operations, making needed investments in America’s infrastructure and enhancing its ability to provide safe, reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible freight transportation.

UPRR’s diversified business mix includes agriculture, automotive, chemical, coal, industrial and intermodal products. The railroad serves many of the fastest-growing U.S. population centers and emphasizes customer service. UPRR operates competitive routes from all major West Coast and Gulf Coast ports to eastern gateways, connects with Canada’s rail systems and is the only railroad serving all six major Mexico gateways. Elected city officials as well as those from Chambers of Commerce can nominate their communities for inclusion in the Train Town USA registry at www.up150.com.
