Telemedicine Appointments As we phase into a 'new normal' world, appointments with health care providers are shifting to telemedicine options, where the visits occur over the phone or through mobile devise, desktop or laptop. NSMC registered dietitians are following suite. Our virtual appointments are easy to schedule and will continue to be an option moving forward.

Tools For Virtual Nutrition Visits To help you provide accurate information during your appointment, here are some tools: Digital home scale - use this to track weight trends. Weigh yourself no more than twice a week, first thing in the morning (preferably Monday and Friday). Place the scale on a tile floor for best results Digital food scale - weigh cooked meat, fish and poultry Small notebook to record food intake Measuring cups and spoons to gauge portions.

The North Shore Community Development Coalition (North Shore CDC), in partnership with The Salem Pantry will continue to provide bi-weekly mobile food markets on Saturdays in the alley next to the Espacio Community Center, in Salem. Telemedicine Appointment Preparation Have your paperwork ready in advance Include a list of current medications and dosages of vitamins and nutritional supplements you are currently taking Provide recent blood work if you don't think your provider has access to this information Use the right technology Decide what device to use (cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc. Do a trial run for virtual visits to make sure your camera, speakers and microphone work properly Familiarize yourself with the volume and mute buttons Choose the best place in your home for a virtual appointment Choose a quiet area with privacy and minimize background noise. Headphones may help you hear your provider/dietitian more clearly Arrange for children and pets to be taken care of Have an idea of your goals The more specific you are about your goals, the better your provider/dietitian can guide you Have a pen and paper handy Write down questions in advance of your session and take down questions as you think of them Take notes of key points, and strategies Ask for written handouts and/or educational materials Communication Enable Patient Gateway for confidential exchange of information

Berry Almond Smoothie Bowl 2/3 c frozen raspberries 1/2 c frozen sliced banana 1/2 c plain, unsweetended almond milk (cow, pea or soy milk can be substituted for a protein boost) 5 Tbsp sliced almonds, divided 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/8 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 c blueberries 1 Tbsp unsweetened coconut flakes Instructions

1. Blend raspberries, banana, almond milk, 3 Tbsp almonds, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla in a blender until very smooth. 2. Pour smoothie into a bowl and top with blueberries, then remaining 2 Tbsp almonds and coconut. Yield: 1 1/3 cup serving Amount per serving: 360 calories; 19g total fat; 45g carbohydrate, 3.3g saturated fat, 9g protein, 89mgs sodium, 14g fiber and 21g sugar Exchanges: 2 1/2 fruit, 3 1/2 fat Adapted from: EatingWell.com
