We celebrated our three-year anniversary in Bermuda, and we were surprised to find so many wonderful things to do on such a small island — from cliff jumping into the ocean, parasailing over the turquoise-blue water and romantic walks along the pink-sand beaches. But our favourite was simply driving our scooter around the island. It’s truly the best way to see and explore Bermuda.

Above all else, it’s surely Bermuda’s natural beauty that makes it such an enticing getaway. There are many ways to experience the island’s unspoilt environment, and Bermudians go to great lengths to protect that which makes the destination so special.

GOING BACK TO THE 1600S, long before
the concept of environmental conservation came to the forefront, Bermudians recognised the importance of the sea turtles that call the island’s waters home. Five of the world’s seven known species of sea turtles frequent the island’s seagrass beds and coral reefs. From studies to conservation efforts to educational courses to the care of sick and injured sea turtles at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ), Bermudians pursue a variety of methods to preserve local sea turtle populations. To interact with these gentle creatures, head to BAMZ, where green sea turtle are kept in an outdoor pool area. If you’d prefer to observe turtles in their natural habitat, try the protected inlets around St. David’s Island. Modern conservation efforts include the implementation of Seabins, floating trash cans that filter seawater to capture litter and debris. The devices are now in place at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club and the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club’s Princess Marina. Another modern conservation effort involves the attempted eradication of a single fish species — the invasive lionfish, whose venomous spines and incredible appetite for native juvenile fish make it a serious threat to the health of Bermuda’s marine life. Bermuda was the first island to initiate a culling programme, and today many countries use it as a template for combatting their own lionfish invasions. “The problem is that the lionfish population hasn’t levelled out yet, so it’s hard to say how much of an impact culling has as far as a long-term benefit,” said Chris Flook of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Services. Chris is credited with first urging the Bermuda government to implement the lionfish culling programme in the early 2000s, finally gaining traction by bringing a live lionfish in a bucket into the office of then-Minister of the Environment,
El James. “If the problem was left alone, we would probably lose certain species forever, because the lionfish eat them.” Land-based conservation efforts, like Dr. David B. Wingate’s 1960s initiative to bring the island’s national emblem, the cahow, back from near-extinction, have led to a thriving bird population. Nearly 400 bird species have been recorded on the island’s tiny 21 square miles. Fall is the best time to see a wide range of species, and birds can be spotted from numerous locations across Bermuda.

Check out a variety of wildfowl and herons at the mangrove-fringed ponds at Somerset Long Bay Nature Reserve East and West, or warblers and bluebirds at Fort Scaur, which offers bonus panoramic views of Ely’s Harbour and the Great Sound. One of the most versatile eco-friendly experiences in Bermuda is the Railway Trail. Bike, jog or meander by foot along 18 of the railway’s original 22 miles. The railway once spanned the island, taking passengers between St. George’s and Somerset, operating for less than two decades in the 1930s and 1940s. Reopened in 1986 by the Bermuda Parks Department, the trail is divided into sections ranging in length, allowing you to drop in or leave the path at your leisure. You’ll encounter beautiful views and varied flora and fauna along the way, and the trail provides easy access to popular attractions like Elbow Beach, the Crystal Caves and the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. ermuda reigns supreme when it comes to aquatic adventures, whether they involve skimming above the waves, hauling in a great catch, scoping out underwater sights or many more waterbased wonders. The tricky part is what to choose, since all the options can be a great fit. Here are some ideas to help you narrow things down.
B O AT E R ’ S PA R A D I S E Letting a pro handle the navigation allows you to just focus on kicking back and hanging out. The island has a number of outfits where you can rent a small 25-foot to a larger 45-foot boat or catamaran, each skippered by a private captain. Smaller ones are specifically fitted for families or small groups of 10 or less, but all can be made-to-order charters that can include sightseeing, reef snorkelling, cliff jumping or anything your heart desires. With tailor-made charters the possibilities are endless. Some larger boats and catamarans give you the option to enjoy the whole vessel to yourself, or you can join a larger group and enjoy a Champagne sunset cruise or a sailing and snorkelling cruise. HOOK UP Cruising can be great, but maybe you’re up for a bit more of a challenge. If so, try booking a fishing charter and spend a day out trawling Bermuda’s waters for game fish. Only about a mile or so offshore, the water is filled with all manner of game fish, including tuna, wahoo and mahi mahi (or dolphinfish, as it’s known in Bermuda), and, if you’re lucky, you may even reel in a recordbreaking marlin. WILD RIDES You can also pick up the pace beyond sportfishing by jumping on WildCat, a highpowered catamaran that takes passengers on a revved-up sightseeing adventure
around Bermuda’s coastline. A wet and wild ride aboard an inflatable 12-person Banana Boat is another thrilling option. The boat captain tows the group whilst you hang on and try not to fall off. It’s a great way to have a blast with family and friends — over and over again. MAKE A SPLASH To keep the rush going after those wild rides, try a leap off Bermuda’s cliffs.
There are a number of hot spots for this around the island, but Admiralty Park has some of the best cliff jumping options. If cliff dives involve too much of a leap of faith, hop on a Jet Ski. Knowledgeable guides will show you some of the best places to see on the water and can point out many historic landmarks. FORMED BY A VOLCANO, BERMUDA’S COLLECTION OF 138 ISLANDS is surrounded by epic
reefs that make it quite the playground for snorkellers and divers. The island has more than its fair share of spectacular coral, shipwrecks and marine life. We’re talking tiny blennies, moray eels and parrotfish galore. Whilst in Bermuda, here are some snorkel and dive spots you must see to believe. South West Breaker This special snorkel spot is beautiful enough that is was featured in the opening scene of The Deep, a 1970s movie starring Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset. It’s perfect for intermediate snorkellers because it’s typically very calm. However, it’s not uncommon for the occasional ocean roller to come through. Keep your eyes peeled for schools of barracuda, creole wrasse, chub and bream, as well as beautiful parrotfish, butterflyfish and angelfish. Church Bay Make a beeline to this beautiful secluded beach, located on the southwest side of the island. Here you’ll find a sheltered bay without much in terms of wave action and blue parrotfish

galore. The main reef chain comes within 100 yards of the beach, which makes it easy for all levels. However, be careful from April through June — that’s when the southerly breeze typically washes Portuguese men-ofwar ashore. Pollockshields This English cargo steamer smashed into the reef during a storm in 1915. Today it makes an awesome dive or snorkel spot because you can still see the two massive boilers, a spare propeller, live ammunition and shell casings scattered about. Because of its location, 300 yards from Elbow Beach shore, Pollockshields is best suited for more experienced, adventurous divers. The swim back to shore is long but well worth it.

HMS Vixen This partially submerged wreck on the island’s west side is in a well-protected part of the island, so conditions are usually great for snorkelling and diving. Sunk in 1896 as a block ship to defend the dockyard, the wreck is now home to hundreds of hungry bream, chub, snapper and the occasional black grouper. Constellation and Montana The Constellation and Montana sank about a century apart and are now almost on top of each other in shallow, crystal-clear water that’s perfect for snorkelling or diving. The wrecks, on the north-west side of the island, can only be accessed by boat. Sightings of parrotfish, black grouper and snapper are not uncommon; the reef is teeming with life. Jobson’s Cove/Warwick Long Bay If you are looking for a leisurely snorkel near a lovely stretch of pink sand, this spot should be on your short list. For starters, the reef is a short swim from shore, which makes it great for families. Warwick Long Bay Park is located on the south shore of the island and also makes a great family day out. The reef is covered in tropical reef fish, including parrotfish, butterflyfish and blue tang. If you’re lucky, you’ll also spot spiny lobster, too. Tobacco Bay Situated on the north-east side of the island near the historic Town of St. George, Tobacco Bay is amazing for kids and adults. With no current to speak of and shallow reefs, it is ideal for beginners. Not to mention, the abundant sea life — like squirrelfish and sea urchins that hang out under ledges and overhangs — will keep you entertained for hours. North Rock If you’re an intermediate snorkeller or diver, North Rock is a fun option. The reefs surrounding the North Rock navigational beacon are some of the most northerly reefs in the world. It’s located 8 miles north of the island and only accessible by boat so the journey can sometimes be rough. It’s worth heading here, though, for the pristine coral reefs teeming with barracuda, parrotfish, snapper, blue tang, angelfish and butterflyfish.

Some of the oldest offshore yacht races see Bermuda as the finishing point — many fighting across the oft-times challenging Gulf Stream to battle it out to the finish line. One of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races is the Newport Bermuda Race, which first took place in 1906. Taking place biennially in June, the next event will be held on June 19, 2020. In the past it has seen close to 200 boats make the 635-nautical mile journey. Also biennial, the Marion to Bermuda Race takes sailors from
Buzzard’s Bay in Massachusetts on a 645-nautical mile journey to Bermuda that starts on June 14, 2019. On June 5, 2020, the Annapolis to Bermuda Ocean Race offers a combination of inshore and offshore racing as sailors navigate the Chesapeake Bay before heading into the Gulf Stream onto Bermuda for this 753-nautical mile race — the longest ocean race on the U.S. East Coast. In connection with Antigua Sailing Week, the Antigua Bermuda Race covers 935 nautical miles starting on May 8, 2019. The Argo Group Gold Cup sailing event takes place in Bermuda’s Great Sound from May 6 to May 11, 2019, and is the oldest match-racing regatta for one-design yachts.

P E R F E C T YO U R SW I N G Bermuda is a golfing paradise, whether you’re looking to challenge your game or partake in a family-friendly round of mini golf. The 21-square island boasts six world-class golf courses spread across the island, each with exciting challenges. And in Royal Naval Dockyard, you can play your way through models of the best golf holes in the U.S., Bermuda and Scotland at Bermuda Fun Golf, complete with waterfalls, saltwater ponds with live fish and beautiful sunset views. If tennis is more your preference, the island offers about 100 courts. Tennis has been a popular sport in Bermuda since its introduction from England in the late 19th century. Many hotels feature courts available to guests, and many permit non-guests to use them. There are also public courts on island for hire.
GET A MOVE ON For some vacationers, the focus is on maintaining their active lifestyle. For runners, Bermuda offers races they can join on most weekends from September through May. And if your stay falls in January, look into signing up for Bermuda Marathon Weekend. A total of three races are held — the Front Street Mile, a 10K and either the half or full marathon. You can take your pick of these three or really push yourself by signing up for the Bermuda Triangle Challenge, where you run all of them. Cycling is equally popular on the island, and there are several locations to rent a bicycle and plenty of places to explore, especially along the famous islandwide Bermuda Railway Trail and in the Town of St. George. VIEWS THE BERMUDA RAILWAY TRAIL,
a right of way of the disused railway line, which was affectionately called “Old Rattle and Shake,” stretches the length of the island. In 1984, 40 years after the railway line was dismantled, most of the 18 miles of the Railway’s original 22 miles were transformed into a national park. Over the past couple of years, bridges connected parts of the Railway Trail that had previously been inaccessible. Footbridges connecting both sides of Bailey’s Bay — as well as the more recent installation over Flatts — now allow access to almost five miles of trails that are mostly off the main road. The trail affords some of the most amazing views, and it is a great way to see the island, particularly because it’s limited to pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. Along the route there are trail signs with maps and historical details for further learning about the trail’s past.
