HUNTING

There’s no doubt about it: Bermuda’s idyllic location and stylish finds make it a retail paradise, where you’ll find everything you are looking for — and more.

W hen you think about a shopping destination, big cities like New York, London or Paris come to mind. But with coastally curated, pink sand–inspired shopping, Bermuda has them beat. Even if you don’t intend to do more than windowshop, you’re likely to end up making a purchase — or a few — here. Whilst Bermuda has various shopping districts, the heaviest concentration

of stores is in the City of Hamilton. It’s here where you’ll find the iconic candycoloured buildings Bermuda is known for. Luxury brands and local favourites dot the Hamilton Harbour — and you’ll be sure to find something that suits your fancy. If your goal is gathering great gifts for loved ones, you’ll find them in an array of outlets, ranging from smaller personalised speciality shops to bigger department stores. Some of the standout items that can be found in Hamilton include Wedgwood china and Baccarat crystal, local clothing brands, leather goods, perfumes, Irish linens and even locally made art and jewellery. Bermuda is also known as a top spot to purchase gems and jewels. You’ll find everything from high-end timepieces and diamond rings at Crisson Jewellers to unique charms and jewellery made from coins recovered from shipwrecks at Walker Christopher Goldsmith’s. You’ll even find unique works that are fashioned out of the island’s famous pink sands. Inspired by the natural beauty of Bermuda, Jennifer Rodrigues Designs’ hand-fabricated Pink Sand Collection pieces will take your breath away. Her jewellery can be found throughout the island.

For more pink-sand treasures, visit Alexandra Mosher Jewellery Studio, where the design process involves the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. She carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold. She and her team of Bermudian artisans create the entire collection by hand on-site at their flagship store and studio on Front Street in Hamilton. Another popular keepsake that captures Bermuda’s natural beauty is sea glass jewellery. If you’re lucky, you may spot sea glass on our stunning shores, but to take the guesswork out of your

search, shop for unique Bermuda sea glass jewellery. Some Bermudian brands, such as Atlantic Jewellery Studio in Hamilton, carry gorgeous hand-crafted pieces made with the island’s one-of-a-kind finds. Here you can find their most popular creation, The Bermuda Medallion, a pendant containing sea glass, pink sand and replicas of tiny seashells cast in silver that resemble the little tide pools left on the rocks by the waves. Whilst you will find many options on Front and Reid Streets, don’t forget to visit the shops located off the beaten Continued on page 12

FORWARD Bright colours, beachwear and an iconic business ensemble that puts the fun in functional: welcome to making a statement in Bermuda.

COLOURFUL, creative and

sometimes couture, Bermudian designers are taking strides towards the future of fashion. “I always had a love for fashion and always liked to be different,” says Desiree Riley, the 28-year-old designer behind Dezir Designs. Growing up, there weren’t a lot of different options for clothing for Riley — and she was determined to change that. “I believe that’s what really helped me get more into design,” she says, “the chance to create something different from what was already trending on the island.” The Warwick-based Riley always incorporates colours and patterns in her well-thoughtout pieces. She has been designing for just about two years, but don’t let that short timespan fool you. Her eclectic design aesthetic has drawn plenty of attention from the likes of the Bermuda Fashion Festival and soon Vancouver Fashion Week, where she’ll design a spring 2020 collection to be shown in September. Riley incorporates different styles from around the world in her designs and likes to push the fashion limit. “I draw inspiration from variety, such as cultures, architecture, wildlife and time periods. I [think of all of this] when I think of [creating] new collections.” She has been creating about two to three collections per year since she started, and designs for women of all ages whilst often breaking gender stereotypes. Don’t be surprised to see fun takes on the iconic Bermuda

shorts in her designs. “I love to design for women who are not afraid to stand out in the crowd and be admired for their outfits,” she says. Former Miss Bermuda Rochelle Minors is also putting Bermuda fashion on the map with pieces made for women who want unique looks that set them apart. She started her career in fashion in 2014 and was also inspired by Bermuda Beautiful and its unique sense of style. “We mix British and American fashions together and add our own unique twist,” she says. “Our [Bermuda’s] style aesthetic has always been implemented in my designs.” The 29-year-old powerhouse has shown her brand, Rochelle Nicole, at New York Fashion Week but still feels that “there is no culture like ours and no fashion sense like ours.” She often incorporates Bermuda’s architecture and the colours of Bermudian homes in panelling and colour blocking in her collections. You can find many of her designs in her hometown, Sandys Parish, where the Rochelle Nicole studio is based. Minors’ sporty-chic aesthetic incorporates sophisticated silhouettes with sporty details and a modern twist. Her target demographic is expansive, ranging from women in their mid-20s to those in their early 60s. “She is the ultimate go-getter,” Minors says about her typical customer. “[She’s a] business woman, a fashion icon, creative, a stay-at-home mom, a city girl. She is

sophisticated, bold, fearless and unafraid to stand out.” Beyond Rochelle and Desiree, other local designers are also shaping island fashion. James Lee of Xoetiqu Designs creates bold concepts and has been on the scene for about five years, whilst Anthony Dean Williams of Definitions by Deane is quite seasoned, with more than 25 years of experience in creating custom creations and dresses… and he’s also the force behind a budding menswear label. All based on the island, all inspired by our beautiful pink-sand beaches and idyllic views, and all ready to show that Bermuda’s sense of style extends way beyond its iconic shorts. SMOKES Bermuda isn’t just an island paradise with all the usual fun-in-the-sun features; it’s also a paradise for enjoying the finest Cuban cigars this side of Havana.

BERMUDA ALREADY HAS PLENTY OF BUILT-IN CHARMS, including stunning beaches, exquisite

dining options, myriad fun activities on land and sea, a rich arts scene and shopping outlets offering both sleek style and iconic, island-grown treasures. But one added attraction that not everyone knows about is Cuban cigars. Whilst it’s still not easy (or even possible) for American cigar aficionados to visit Cuba to sample them there, Bermuda offers the chance to both enjoy them and bring a few back. Bringing back the flavour One of the most commonly asked questions Bermuda cigar retailers encounter is, “How many Cuban cigars can I import to the U.S. legally?” The answer is qualified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in several ways… and you will be happy to know the allowance is quite generous. Here’s the breakdown: 1. U.S. citizens may import 100 Cuban cigars, or less than $800 worth of Cuban cigars, duty-free from anywhere in the world,

3. The Office of Foreign Assets Control’s new laws allow you to give your imported Cuban cigars to friends as gifts. Top spots to enjoy a smoke There are no limits on the number of Cuban cigars you may consume whilst you are in Bermuda. There are many and varied cigarfriendly venues to choose from where you can enjoy great food, wine and time with friends whilst you savour your favourite Habanos. Particular favourites include: • Kick back with your luscious Habanos whilst enjoying a spectacular harbour view at The Crown and Anchor Lobby Bar at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club • Harry’s Bar on the waterfront has a vibrant, urban atmosphere where you can enjoy a cigar as part of an aperitif or postdinner indulgence • Both Rosewood Tucker’s Point and Port Royal Golf Courses offer Cuban cigars to add a further level of enjoyment to these two great golf courses • Ascots restaurant at The Royal Palms, which has a delightful conservatory in the adjacent garden Pairing pointers Pair a full-bodied red wine or port with an equally full-bodied cigar such as a Montecristo No. 2, Cohiba Genios or Partagás Maduro No. 1. Later in the evening, a good malt whisky or dark aged rum also complements a full-sized Habano and will bring new meaning to the phrase, “Savour the moment!” Of course, Cuban cigars offer pairing potential with many more libations, though perhaps the best pairing option is taking leisurely puffs of a full-bodied puro whilst the setting sun gazes down on the ocean, marking the end of another beautiful day in Bermuda — and setting the stage for a great night.

reason to lose ground whilst on the island. For conventional fitness routines (weights and cardio), you’ll find gyms with top-quality equipment and cardio classes. If you prefer to take in the natural surroundings, go for an early walk or jog on the beach whilst soaking up the sunrise and the pictureperfect views. The fresh ocean air will also inspire you and help you relax as you burn some calories. Another way

to keep moving is by signing up for fitness classes, such as CrossFit or tai chi. You can even work out with a personal trainer. Inquire at your hotel to find out more or visit a local gym, as some offer the option to purchase a day pass. For yoga aficionados, many of the island’s resorts offer group classes for you to start or maintain your routine. You can also practise yoga on your own right on the beach. Head out early to catch the sunrise, sit upright and enjoy the beautiful shoreline. Take deep breaths and connect with your surroundings. This will help you start your day feeling refreshed and motivated. If you prefer an afternoon or evening experience, sign up for a class or relax your mind and body with some unforgettable sunset views. Just imagine yourself enjoying a hydrating, natural aloe or cedar warming massage during a half- or full-day spa retreat. For a more romantic experience, opt for a couple’s massage. Some body treatments focus on stress relief, whilst others use local products like the Bermuda lily-infused aromatherapy. Other options include reflexology and microdermabrasion. Even the younger ones can enjoy treatments that are specially designed for children ages 13 and under. GLAM IT UP Most spas offer beauty treatment services, but you’ll also find full-service salons where you can get styled so you’re ready for a memorable night out. Whether you’re looking for a complete makeover or a quick updo, you’re sure to find just what you need at one of the island’s salons. In addition to hair therapies, you can enjoy skin-care treatments made with natural ingredients to soften and firm up your skin. SKIN SENSE Speaking of skincare, it’s important to protect and take care of your skin whilst enjoying some fun in the sun. Here are a few key suggestions: •B e sure to apply sunscreen throughout the day and reapply after swimming. •A lways cleanse and moisturise your skin after a day out. • Aloe is a time-tested natural remedy to apply if you spend too much time out in the sun. •S tay hydrated; it’s important to drink lots of water during the day, especially in tropical climates. Of course, aloe isn’t your only option for treating sunburn. Local spas also offer soothing treatments to help alleviate the effects of the sun’s harmful rays, whilst a scrub with honey and cane sugar is also used to enhance your skin’s natural glow.
