itting at the eastern end of the island and home to the Town of St. George, the parish of St. George’s may be the oldest inhabited part of the island. Serving as Bermuda’s capital until 1815, the Town of St. George was established back in 1612, shortly after the Sea Venture was shipwrecked on nearby reefs with Bermuda’s first settlers on board. Today the area is constantly being pumped with a fresh and youthful energy.

King’s Square, on the waterfront, is the heart of town. Colourful reenactments take place here at the Stocks and Pillory and the Ducking Stool, where town gossips met a watery punishment for their loose lips back in the day. Across the small bridge from the square is Ordnance Island, with great views looking back at town and Somers’ Wharf. The St. George’s Foundation operates the full-scale replica of the Deliverance, one of the two ships built by the castaways of the Sea Venture wreck of 1609. Explore above and below the decks and follow the audiovisual

exhibits that portray what life on board would have been like and how this ship became famous as “The Ship That Saved America.” As a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, St. George’s features historic attractions that are always worth exploring, whether they’re the reenactments in King’s Square or learning about the history of the town and its settlement at the World Heritage Centre on Penno’s Wharf… or simply wandering the town’s meandering lanes. T I M E T R AV E L L I N G A walk through any of the town’s narrow streets feels like a step back in time, with quaint names like Needle & Thread Alley, Featherbed Alley and Old Maid’s Lane, and will quickly reveal examples of buildings dating from as early as the 1600s — many now occupied for residential or commercial use. Several of the buildings in the town have been lovingly restored by the Bermuda National Trust and are home to museums that hold a glimpse into the town’s past. Whilst the buildings that are for private use can only be viewed from the road, they are still fascinating examples of Bermuda’s early architecture. Take a stroll along York Street to find St. Peter’s, Their Majesties Chappell, which has proudly stood sentinel over the town since 1612. The church is one of the oldest continuously used churches in the Western Hemisphere. The interior of the church is worth a look; the exposed cedar beams in the church were all harvested from Bermudian cedar trees. The church’s graveyard — where many early Bermudians are buried — is fascinating; read the weather-worn-but-still-legible epitaphs on crumbling headstones. Just on the outskirts of the town sits the Unfinished Church, which was meant to replace St. Peter’s in the 1870s after it was damaged by a storm. Whilst the interior of the church is no longer accessible, it’s a picturesque ruin that’s worth exploring.

GETTING TO ST. GEORGE’S St. George’s is easily accessible by scooter or electric car, and you will find charging stations in the town. You may also take advantage of Bermuda’s excellent public transportation and head out to St. George’s by bus or ferry. Sea Express Ferry offers a seasonal Orange Route that operates from April to November to St. George’s from Hamilton, via Dockyard (295-4506; marineandports.bm). To take the iconic pink Bermuda Breeze bus ride from Hamilton to St. George’s, choose routes 1, 3, 10 or 11. Or you can take the bus from Dockyard, via Hamilton, to St. George’s (295-3851; www.gov.bm/bus). Pick up a Transportation Pass, which is good for unlimited rides on the bus and ferry system. Passes cost $19 for one day, $31.50 for two days, $44 for three days, $48.50 for four days and $62 for seven days, with discounted rates for children ages 5 to 16. Children under 5 ride free. St. George’s also boasts several military fortifications and batteries, including the island’s largest fort, Fort St. Catherine. Along with exploring the tunnels, ramparts and cannons, Fort St. Catherine also offers one of the most spectacular views on the island. Nearby are several beaches, including Tobacco Bay, which features a calm bay surrounded by limestone rock formations and is home to a variety of sea life, including parrotfish — it’s the perfect place for children to snorkel.

fall off, don’t worry — the boat captain will pick you up. Or you can go a more relaxed route by zipping around on a Jet Ski on a tour led by a fun and knowledgeable guide. If you feel like commanding your own vessel, aye-aye, captain: Rent a 13- or 16-foot Boston Whaler or a larger 23-foot pontoon boat and explore St. George’s coastline at your own leisure. For something a little slower paced, try kayaking or rent a paddleboard, which can be perfect for all ages and skill levels.

P R E S E N T - D AY P A S T I M E S Whilst some of the back roads in St. George’s are a little sleepy, there are plenty of activities to take advantage of in the East End, whether by land or on the water. A great way to explore the East End coastline is by horseback. Trail rides can be organised to take in many of the sites, as well as along the beaches. There are also plenty of watersports to choose from here. Thrill seekers can hop on a wet and wild ride aboard an inflatable banana boat as they try to hang on and not fall off. But if you do

TA K E I T E A S Y If you’re just looking to take it easy with some chill-out time on the beach or centre yourself with some blissedout yoga, there are plenty of ways to unwind. The town offers places for a few quiet moments of reflection, whether it’s in the well-manicured greenery of Somers’ Garden — featuring an iconic Bermuda moongate — or strolling along the waterfront on Ordnance Island whilst checking out the boats in St. George’s Harbour. In neighbouring St. David’s, you can find more beach options and amenities

The nature reserve is only accessible by foot but is well worth the trek. PURCHASING POWER Shopping in the Town of St. George has undergone a bit of a renaissance recently, with new boutique shops popping up. There are still several outposts of island favourites selling clothing, shoes, souvenirs and, of course, the eponymous shorts. Unique finds include jewellery inspired by the sea, locally made soaps and handmade Bermuda products, as well as books, health and beauty supplies, and cigars. The Town of St. George is also home to Bermuda’s iconic perfumery, Lili Bermuda. Here you can find all of the perfumer’s Bermuda-inspired scents, as well as take a tour and see how each bottle is lovingly hand-crafted on-site.

FOR A FRESH WAY TO DISCOVER ST. GEORGE’S AND ITS HISTORY look no further than

the guided walking tours of the town. Whether walking, biking or cruising in a minivan, there are several options that will offer a chance to explore the town and surrounding area through the eyes of a local, as well as sample some of the food and local gifts unique to the East End. Bringing to life the town’s past, a Haunted History tour is a novel approach to learn about the town’s history. Whilst there are certainly stories of hauntings within the walls of many of the town’s 400-plus-year-old buildings, the tour also revives the stories of the people that inhabited the town and those that made their mark on the history of the island. Storytellers in period costumes appear to guide visitors through the narrow streets and alleyways that tell tales from slavery to witchcraft. As the sun sets, the backdrop of the centuries-old town creates an eerie atmosphere offering a way to experience the history of the town — and the island — like no other. The Bermuda National Trust also offers tours around their historic properties and sites, many of which are situated in St. George’s, including The Globe Hotel, which houses the Bermuda National Trust Museum. The 17th-century building is one of the oldest stone buildings in Bermuda. The tour guides visitors through the island’s former capital and its historic streets and buildings, with a unique perspective on St. George’s role throughout history. Within one of the town’s historic properties is The Lili Bermuda Perfumery, which operates tours daily (except Sundays and public holidays). Along with exploring Stewart Hall, the former 18th-century home that houses the perfumery, the tour offers the chance to sample Lili Bermuda’s exclusive perfumes, as well as get a glimpse inside the techniques of their hand-crafted perfumes, which are still individually bottled and packaged at the perfumery.
