oOn Bermuda’s West End lies a destination that uniquely melds the island’s history with modern-day fun. Royal Naval Dockyard is a crown jewel of delights where shopping, dining, activities, and nightlife converge to offer an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

From Battleships To Cruise Ships

Bermuda’s settlement kicked off with a shipwreck, and over the centuries, the island’s growth and development remained strongly connected to the sea surrounding it. The 200 acres on which Dockyard exists today were purchased in the early 1800s by the British

Royal Navy, which massively transformed the area with large land reclamations. Over the next 50 years, the dockyard, victualling yard, and ordnance depot were built painstakingly by hand by enslaved and free Bermudians and convicts brought to the island from the United Kingdom. The site went on to serve as a strategically located secure anchorage for the Navy, and it also had a heavy impact on 19th-century life in Bermuda. The dockyard employed an average of 1,000 Bermudians at a time, accounting for more than 15 percent of Bermuda’s income. It laid the foundation for a workforce skilled in plumbing, carpentry, and other trades.

The site has evolved through the years to meet the modern-day needs of Bermuda. Today, Dockyard is where most cruise ships calling on Bermuda tie up for their stay. It’s also a hub of activity where visitors and residents alike come to shop, dine, and play.

 The 200 acres on which Dockyard exists today were purchased in the early 1800s by the British Royal Navy.

Journey Through Time

Royal Naval Dockyard’s present-day development is guided by the West End Development Corporation (WEDCO), which works to keep the area’s offerings fresh and captivating, making Dockyard a highly sought-after visitor destination. As WEDCO continually evolves the Dockyard experience, the corporation maintains elements of the area’s distinct history, ensuring visitors can experience and learn about the site’s unique 200year history. Modern offerings are housed in historic structures in a juxtaposition that

gives visitors a window into historic and present-day Bermuda.

The best place at Royal Naval Dockyard to learn more about the area’s history is the National Museum of Bermuda, housed in The Keep — the largest fort on the island. Once a proud symbol of British naval might, the fort was designed by the Royal Engineers to defend the various approaches to the dockyard. The Keep’s buildings, many of which are former ammunition storehouses, have been transformed into exhibits, storage, offices, and event spaces. Visitors can explore 500 years of Bermuda’s history at this 16-acre museum site, where more than 80,000 unique objects are displayed. Items to peruse include historical documents, photographs, plans and maps, art, archaeological finds including shipwreck artefacts, small watercraft, relics of Bermudian life spanning more than four centuries, and much more. Exhibits and displays tell the story of Bermuda’s history and

culture, its links with the West Indies and the Azores, enslavement in Bermuda, and the island’s defence heritage.

History comes to life at Dockyard with a free historical walking tour sponsored by WEDCO and the Bermuda Tourism Authority. Every Tuesday and Friday at 9:45 a.m. from May 7 through October 4, 2024, visitors are invited to join this interactive, fun, educational tour and historical skit depicting Dockyard’s life in the mid-1800s. Fully dressed in period costume, knowledgeable guides and actors pull you back as you explore and learn about Dockyard’s breakwaters, fortifications, workshops, and storehouses. Your guides’ lively performance and historically accurate dress help you connect with the area’s history in a dynamic, enjoyable way.

Cultural Canvas

See Bermuda through the eyes of local artists at the Bermuda Arts Centre. This nonprofit organisation promotes an appreciation and understanding of visual arts and crafts in Bermuda through exhibitions, workshops, and education. Themed exhibits and group shows capture the beauty and whimsy of the island, whilst a robust schedule of classes invites novices to put paint to paper in their creative pursuits. The Bermuda Arts Centre is also a working art studio, allowing visitors to watch as the creations of talented artists come to life.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

THE PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY IN BERMUDA HAS PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SHAPING THE ISLAND’S HISTORY OF ENDURANCE AND SUCCESS.

COURTESY OF NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA CURATORIAL DEPARTMENT Annual Portuguese Festival or festa honouring saints or other religious figures, Hall of History mural by local artist Graham Foster Artwork courtesy of National Museum of Bermuda (2)

BERMUDA’S STORY spans hundreds of years and was shaped by diverse peoples and cultures from across the Atlantic who made this 21-square-mile island their own. One hundred seventy-five years ago, 35 men, 16 women, and 7 children disembarked the Golden Rule, starting their new lives in Bermuda and marking the first arrival of immigrants of Portuguese descent in Bermuda.

Throughout the 19th century, skilled farmers from Madeira and the Azores, seeking opportunities, established an enduring connection between Bermuda and Portugal’s Atlantic islands. Their migration, part of a broader transatlantic movement, reflected a quest for better lives in places like Bermuda, Brazil, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States.

Bermudians of Portuguese descent have made considerable contributions to Bermuda’s political, social, and corporate spheres; but Bermuda’s Portuguese connections date far earlier.

From the 16th century’s seafaring age, Portuguese sailors, often involuntarily through shipwrecks, found Bermuda a pivotal point on their way back from the Caribbean. This tiny isle, though a fraction of the size of the Azores, shared strategic importance as a whaling hub, military post, weather station, and Atlantic port. Portuguese whalers and seafarers frequented Bermuda from the 18th century onwards, some settling after abandoning ships bound for the U.S.

Today, Portuguese communities in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and other cities are thriving, with links to fellow populations in Bermuda and around the world.

Learn more about Bermuda’s Portuguese connections in the Azores and Bermuda exhibit on the first floor of Commissioner’s House at the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard. For more information or to plan your visit, go to www.nmb.bm.

STARSTUDDED ISLAND

DISCOVER THE ALLURE OF ISLAND LIVING THROUGH THE EYES OF CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE FOUND SOLACE AND SERENITY IN BERMUDA’S IDYLLIC SHORES.

BERMUDA’S BEAUTY is so irresistible, even those who could live anywhere in the world have chosen to make a home here. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are perhaps the most recognised names to maintain a residence in Bermuda. The couple was likely lured to Bermuda’s shores due to Douglas’s lineage. His mother, Diana Dill, was a Bermudian who went on to become an actor and model in the U.S. Born in Devonshire, she was married to actor Kirk Douglas from 1943 to 1951. Some of her best-known television appearances include Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and Days of Our Lives.

American playwright Eugene O’Neill had a home in Bermuda in the 20th century, as did famous illustrator William Wallace Denslow, most famous for his work on the children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; former U.S. presidential candidate Ross Perot; and U.K. tech guru James Martin.

Many of the island’s most notable residents call Tucker’s Town home. Situated in St. George’s Parish on the east end of the island, Tucker’s Town is one of Bermuda’s most exclusive neighbourhoods. Another sought-after enclave, dubbed “Millionaire’s Row,” is closer to the City of Hamilton, further enhancing Bermuda’s allure for discerning residents. You can see these stunning homes and other interesting landmarks only visible by water during the Famous Homes & Hideaways Tour,

departing out of Royal Naval Dockyard. This tour pairs sightseeing by boat with a wealth of well-researched historical facts and humorous personal stories about the island. A two-level boat slowly coasts just off the shoreline as the well-informed staff share their broad, deep knowledge of the island. In addition to Millionaire’s Row and other brightly coloured colonial-style homes, you’ll see classic landmarks like the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, the oldest cast-iron lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere. Guests enjoy live entertainment on the return to Royal Naval Dockyard.

Those who’ve taken this tour rave about the easygoing, accessible excursion whose staff are highly knowledgeable when it comes to the island’s history and its wellknown residents. The boat’s captain and crew work hard to deliver a lively, interesting tour, and their hard work has paid off with stellar reviews.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Bermuda from a new perspective.

Savour the Flavour

You’ll certainly need to refuel as you play, shop, and explore at Dockyard; and the destination is home to many great restaurants. Sip on a refreshing tropical cocktail from their beachfront bar and delight your taste buds with delectable culinary creations at their restaurant.

Treasure Hunt

Another big draw of Dockyard is shopping. Aside from Clocktower Shopping Mall, you’ll find several retailers at Royal Naval Dockyard that invite you to get your shopping fix whilst finding relics of the island to bring home.

First things first: rum. This sugarcane spirit is the star of Bermuda’s national cocktails, the Dark ’n Stormy and the Rum Swizzle. At The Rum Barrel, a duty-free shop at Dockyard Terrace, you can pick up everything Goslings alongside Bermuda souvenirs, T-shirts, and duty-free liquors, including their award-winning Goslings Black Seal Rum, a blend dating back to the mid-1800s. Bring home a bottle of a delectable libation of rum, orange juice, and pineapple juice with 9 Parishes bottled, premixed rum swizzle.

Find the perfect pairing for your rum drink at Churchill’s Cigar Cabana, a small open-air kiosk that’s an offshoot of Churchill’s flagship in St. George’s. This cabana has an excellent selection of Cuban, Dominican, and local cigars.

If you’re searching for an authentic keepsake to remind you of your time in Bermuda, look no further than The Bermuda Craft Market. More than 60 local artists sell their creations here, from Bermudian cedar work and ceramics to jewellery and quilts.

Jon Faulkner Pottery is a must-stop if you’re looking for something high-

quality and unique to Bermuda. A true master of his craft, Faulkner develops his glazes from scratch and fires his salt-glazed ceramics in a kiln powered by waste vegetable oil. The artist works on-site and is often available to sign his creations, which range from handmade Bermuda rockpools to vases, kettles, serving trays, and much more.

Another made-in-Bermuda memento: sweet treats from the Bermuda Fudge Co. Located at Dockyard Terrace, this third-generation island family-owned company offers delectable confections to snack on as you walk around Dockyard or to take home and enjoy. There are 27 fudge flavours, like classic dark chocolate, vanilla rum, peanut butter, and mocha. Bermuda Fudge Co. also produces homemade rum cakes infused with El Dorado rum and “singing” chocolate tree frogs to take home.

From sweet treats to sweet scents, find fragrant aromas reminiscent of Bermuda at Dockyard. Discover your favourite Lili Bermuda fragrances at their new location at the National Museum of Bermuda during the summer when a cruise ship is in port. Whilst there, you can choose from various scents for ladies and gentlemen and gift sets featuring perfumed soaps and lotions. The complete line of fragrances is available for sampling and purchase. The Bermuda Fragrance Collection is a trio of scents that capture the island’s essence and can be found at Island Outfitters and Clocktower Shopping Mall. Bermuda Blue, Bermuda Breeze, and Bermuda Heat will remind you of Bermuda with every spritz.

Thanks to an absence of sales tax and a top-notch selection, jewellery shopping in Bermuda is a rewarding pursuit. At Royal Naval Dockyard, elements of the island are captured in stunning pieces created by Davidrose Boutique. The Ocean Collection’s cat’s-eye gemstone mirrors the impossibly blue waters of Bermuda.

The island’s pink sands take centre stage in pieces handmade by Jennifer Rodrigues Designs, found at The Bermuda Craft Market. Each unique piece is made in Bermuda, and each grain of pink sand is artfully arranged in shapes like the beloved Bermuda Longtail. Jennifer Rodrigues offers earrings, necklaces, bracelets and bangles, charms, rings, and men’s jewellery.

For a jewellery shopping trip that rivals any big-city experience, head to Diamonds International. More than 8,000 square feet of retail space, including a VIP lounge, kids’ room, and bar, welcomes shoppers for a fully immersive experience. The staff is dedicated to providing a high level of service as you browse amongst internationally renowned brands like Hublot, TAG Heuer, pre-owned Rolex, and Montblanc.

Looking for essentials like over-thecounter medications, beach gear, or sun-care products? Head to Dockyard Pharmacy, where a wide selection of European and American prescriptions can be filled. The pharmacy also stocks local and international magazines, postcards, snacks and beverages, and other souvenirs.

28 VISIT BERMUDA | 2024/25 clocktower shopping mall
An erstwhile British Royal Navy warehouse is now home to an eclectic collection of modern stores and boutiques.

bBuilt in 1856 as the Great Eastern Storehouse and the Great Northern Storehouse to support the British Royal Navy’s operations, Clocktower Shopping Mall’s formidable three-foot-thick protective stone walls and stately twin spires serve as a picturesque beacon for today’s visitors. Each of the structure’s 100-foot-tall spires features a clock — one keeps the time, whilst the other gives the time of high tide.

Clocktower Shopping Mall hosts more than 20 local businesses and has become one of the most popular shopping destinations on the island.

The Great Eastern Storehouse safely stowed items like sails, oars, shot-stoppers, and rigging. The commissioner, and later the captain-in-charge of the dockyard, also kept offices in the storehouse. The Great Eastern Storehouse resembles the naval bakery at the RN Dockyard in Malta, as both structures were designed by civilian architect William Scamp, who, at the time, worked for the Royal Navy.

In 1990, former naval offices and storage space gave way to a two-level, wheelchairaccessible, air-conditioned shopping mall that, at the time, was home to just 10 shops. Today, Clocktower Shopping Mall hosts more than 20 local businesses and has become one of the most popular shopping destinations on the island.

STYLE STAPLE

A CLASSIC WARDROBE CHOICE FOR BUSINESS OR PLEASURE, BERMUDA SHORTS NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.

BERMUDA SHORTS first gained popularity with British naval officers stationed in Bermuda during World War I. More than 100 years later, however, they remain a style standard and a wardrobe staple all over the world. Their versatility makes them perfect for both outdoor adventures and hitting the boardroom.

Though Bermuda shorts always remain fashionable, there are some tips and tricks to really make them shine. To help you look your best in Bermuda’s finest fashion — as well as choose the trendiest colours for 2024 — we spoke with an expert on the subject: Rebecca Singleton, the founder of TABS Bermuda (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts).

THE ULTIMATE IN BERMUDA STYLE

Singleton says that the key to looking your best in Bermuda shorts really comes down to accessorising properly. If you’re wearing a tie with your shorts, you’ll want to choose either a matching colour (blue with blue) or a complementary colour (blue with coral or pink with turquoise). The same rule applies to the customary knee socks worn with Bermuda shorts, although she shares that navy blue is always an excellent choice. Just be sure to wear them up to your knees — or not at all.

“Your black or brown dress shoes should match your belt, and a crisp pastel dress shirt works with most colours,” says Singleton. “The Shoreby, our take on the Bermuda blazer, which is both lightweight and stylish, will finish the look.”

COLOR ME HAPPY

Wondering what colour combos work best? Pair neutral-coloured Bermuda shorts with a bright-coloured top. If you prefer bright-coloured Bermuda shorts, then combine that with a neutral top.

WHAT’S TRENDING

Of course, there’s really no wrong colour to choose when it comes to Bermuda shorts. It’s all about expressing your style and choosing what makes you feel good. But if you like to stay up to date on the latest fashion trends, Singleton recommends going bright and bold this summer with your short’s selection.

“In 2024, colour trends are shifting towards bold and vibrant hues inspired by nature, with selections reflecting a fusion of energising greens, calming blues, and warming earth tones alongside accents of lively coral and rich jewel tones,” she says. “Considering the 2024 trends, we turned to our natural island surroundings for inspiration. At TABS, we align the colours of our products with the elements that inspire us on the island. This year, we drew inspiration from Bermuda’s distinctive architecture and the surrounding natural world, envisioning

pastel-coloured houses set against vibrant sunsets, juxtaposed with the serene tranquillity of the sea on a summer’s day.”

ARTSY COLLECTIONS

TABS Bermuda is also known for showcasing and collaborating with talented artists to create unique collections.

“This year, we’ve partnered with Christina Sgobba to create our newest pattern, Wild & Restrained, that features abstract patterns inspired by both geographical and architectural aspects of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands,” says Singleton. “The bold design’s bright colours and shapes are sure to be a conversation starter and will feature throughout our collections for men, women, kids, and home.”

To find your favourite styles and accessories, peruse their Hamilton or new Dockyard store or visit www.tabsbermuda.com.
