VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

On behalf of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism I welcome you to our islands. We are delighted you have chosen to vacation or conduct business in America’s Caribbean.

petroglyphs found along Reef Bay trail or visit Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins. Two quaint towns with eclectic shops and restaurants complete the one-of-a-kind St. John experience.

The U.S. Virgin Islands offer four unique islands in one appealing destination. Cultural St. Croix, idyllic St. John, cosmopolitan St. Thomas and tranquil Water Island each have their own special personality. I invite you to experience the varied offerings of each island. With their proximity and array of transportation options, island hopping could not be easier.

Energetic St. Thomas will captivate you with its superb dining, exciting nightlife and dutyfree shopping. Our capital, Charlotte Amalie, is the most visited port in the Caribbean and boasts one of the most picturesque harbors in the world. Fill your days with a trip to a beautiful beach, swim with the sea lions, ride the Caribbean’s only tramway or shop for one of our handmade souvenirs.

The rich heritage and culture of St. Croix comes alive in our architecture, cuisine and traditions. I encourage you to stroll through the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, travel back in time with a visit to Estate Whim Museum or enjoy our culinary delights through a Food Tour. A sailing trip to Buck Island National Monument, one of only two underwater monuments in the United States, is an exceptional day trip. Diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day.

Just within the Charlotte Amalie harbor you’ll find Water Island, the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Relax at romantic Honeymoon Beach, tour the island in a golf cart and get to know a few of the 200 residents that call this island gem home.

Peace and tranquility are plentiful on St. John. Two-thirds of the island is a national park with one pristine beach after another. Twenty plus hiking trails let you explore our history, wildlife and the natural beauty that makes this island spectacular. Be sure not to miss the pre-Columbian

Sincerely,

Whatever way you choose to spend your vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, it is sure to be unforgettable. Enjoy your stay.

WELCOME U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the U.S. Virgin Islands! Whether this is your first visit or you are a returning guest, we look forward to showing you how our home has grown since Hurricanes Irma and Maria swept through in September 2017. Despite the devastating effects of such natural disasters, Virgin Islands residents were determined to once again open our doors to visitors. In the immediate aftermath of the storms, several of our accommodations and businesses were forced to close their doors. Both the public and private sectors faced difficult decisions about how to proceed with recovery. Fortunately, Virgin Islanders are a resilient group, and we rallied together to rebuild our home, clean up our beaches and reopen our businesses. As you make plans for your visit, we hope you will take note of the new attractions, restaurants, shops, accommodations and other businesses that have joined our family since the storms, as well as your treasured favorites that are here to stay. We invite you to experience a variety of delectable local and international cuisine. Discover shops ranging from world-renowned brands to unique boutiques. Enjoy land and water activities for both the bold adventurer as well as for the hammock enthusiast. Explore spectacular beaches and nature trails vibrant

with fresh vegetation and wildlife. Kick back on the white sand as the turquoise waters sleepily lap the shores. We hope you will also take this opportunity to experience the USVI in its entirety by visiting all of our beautiful islands. Each island boasts its own unique personality, with exciting things to do for everyone — from couples to families to those visiting for business. Enjoy bustling St. Thomas and the historical capital of the territory, Charlotte Amalie. Take a break on peaceful St. John as you explore national parks and ruins that tell the story of the territory’s past. Dive the majestic barrier reef known as The Wall or enjoy open roads and lively towns on expansive St. Croix. Though there is still work ahead, we are elated to show you how far we have come in our restoration and improvement. We would not be able to succeed without the support of our visitors, and we are delighted that you are a part of our journey of recovery and rediscovery. Warm regards,

Lisa Hamilton President, U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel & Tourism Association

The tropical isle of St. Croix was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. For all its natural beauty, he named the island “Santa Cruz” meaning Holy Cross. Years later, under the French flag, Santa Cruz was renamed St. Croix. Cruzan Rum, locally known as “The Rum of the Islands,” comes from St. Croix and the name Cruzan comes from the name of the local people of the island known as Crucians. Since the early 1800’s, the Nelthropp family has lived on the island and has been an integral part of this legendary island’s rich history. And for the last two hundred years, the island has not only left its mark on them, but also their rum. It is here that the family produces Cruzan Rum, thereby upholding the centuries-old tradition of crafting the finest Virgin Islands’ rum. Using only the purest, natural ingredients and processes, the Cruzan Rum Distillery has vastly improved on rums of the past. At Cruzan, every last drop of rum is brilliantly crafted to exceptional standards, using natural ingredients and a unique distillation process. Each stage of the process is closely monitored and controlled to ensure that every expression boasts remarkable taste and incredible flavor that shines through in every sip. Cruzan Rum consistently achieves the light, distinctive taste which has made it one of the fastest growing, premium rums in the world. Cruzan’s line of rums has grown to include Aged Dark, Aged Light, Aged 151 Proof and Black Strap, as well as 14 flavors, including the newest member of the flavor lineup, the very popular, Blueberry Lemonade. Cruzan also reintroduced its Estate Diamond Rums in Aged Light & Aged Dark. For rum connoisseurs, Cruzan Single Barrel is the world’s first single barrel rum and winner of a Double Gold Medal at the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition. Rounding out the portfolio is Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum, made with a unique blend of nine spices and Cruzan Velvet Cinn, which takes the naturally sweet flavor of rich dairy cream a step further by adding a robust and lingering taste of bakery cinnamon. Cruzan reminds you to take your time with this on-of-a-kind rum and appreciate its smoothness and quality. So be sure to ask your bartender for 1 part Cruzan® Coconut Rum a Cruzan Rum 1 part Cruzan® Mango Rum Splash of pineapple juice Drink, because in the Virgin Islands Combine over ice and serve. when we say Skewer a pineapple wedge, “Rum” we mean a mango cube and a pineapple leaf for garnish. CONTRIBUTORS U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

ANDREA MILAM

GISELE MORALES

Andrea Milam has lived in the Caribbean since 2005. Enamored with the region’s culture and natural beauty, she moved to St. John after graduating from college. There, she got married, built a home and a family, and established her writing career. Experiencing the way her island community came together following a direct and devastating hit by Hurricane Irma only further fueled her love for St. John and the Caribbean as a whole.

Gisele Morales currently calls the beautiful island of St. Croix home. Although she’s also had the opportunity to call Los Angeles, Miami and Palm Beach home, St. Croix has stolen her heart. As the owner of Gisele Morales Photography, she specializes in wedding, lifestyle and branding photography. When she’s not photographing or traveling, you can find her whipping up a new recipe at home with her husband and fur babies.

CAROL BAREUTHER Carol M. Bareuther, R.D., visited St. Thomas by cruise ship in 1986, returned two months later from her native New Jersey to work as the hospital’s nutritionist and never left. One husband, two children and a three-decade tandem-writing career later, Bareuther still loves life in the USVI. She’s authored Virgin Islands Cooking and Sports Fishing in the Virgin Islands and has written for Cooking Light, Vegetarian Times, Cruising World, Marlin and SAIL. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, swimming, hiking and reading.

STEVE AND JANET SIMONSEN ANQUANETTE GASPARD Born and raised in St. Croix, Anquanette Gaspard is a freelance writer and blogger with extensive experience in food, travel, marketing and research. Her website, www.cruzanfoodie.com, focuses on the food culture in the USVI, the Caribbean and beyond. The blog encourages readers to experience different foods and cultures and explore locations outside of their comfort zones, allowing them to fully understand how food and travel connect people from all walks of life. Her work has been featured in publications such as EBONY and Destination Marriott and www.onshegoes.com.

VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

Steve and Janet Simonsen met on St. Thomas in 1987, got married at Secret Harbor in 1989 and moved to St. John in 1991. Since then, Steve’s photography has taken them around the world but has always been rooted in the islands they call home. He’s contributed to the V.I. Department of Tourism’s branding for two decades, and his work has appeared in Islands, Scuba Diving, Outside, National Geographic Adventure and Caribbean Travel and Life. They also have supplied footage to Kenny Chesney for music videos, concert tours and documentaries.

WELCOME TO

ST. THOMAS By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D.

IT’S THE MIX OF OLD WORLD AND NEW THAT MAKES St. Thomas a bucket-list destination. First settled by the Danes in 1671, the territory’s capital of Charlotte Amalie remains the largest historical town in the United States, complete with red-roofed buildings, Danish-language street signs and step streets for navigating the hills. Yet, under the U.S. flag since 1917, the 32 square miles of town and country boast 21stcentury creature comforts like upscale resorts, fine dining, jewel-filled shops and classy charter yachts. Sophistication aside, St. Thomas also boasts a laid-back, toes-in-the-sand tropical paradise vibe. You can see it in the lush, rugged hillsides just waiting to be explored that give the island its Rock City nickname. It’s also evident in one of St. Thomas’ claims to fame as the only U.S. territory bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, a fact that makes watersports a native language here. Visit for a day, a week or longer — and come back often. There’s always something to see, do and discover on St. Thomas. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

Land of LEISURE

ST. THOMAS OFFERS SEVERAL WAYS TO ENJOY THE SPORTING LIFE, AS WELL AS ECOTOURISM ADVENTURES. Coral World Ocean Park TAKE ONLY PHOTOS, LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS, AND KEEP paradise in its place. This is a great mindset to experience the natural treasures in the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as America’s Caribbean Paradise. Whether you opt to touch starfish, swim with sea lions and sea turtles or wander the ocean floor without scuba skills, Coral World Ocean Park is the premier spot to kick off an eco-exploration of St. Thomas. The park’s Touch Pool is where you can enjoy the look and feel of critters such as conch and sea cucumbers, and you can book the swims with sea creatures in advance by going to the park’s website. Strapping on a special helmet — attached to an oxygen source — is what allows you to take a stroll some 20 feet under water, right through the coral reef that surrounds the park’s Undersea Observatory. You can also try snuba, which combines elements from snorkeling and scuba diving, or schedule a private tour of the park. Coral World is located adjacent to Coki Beach. Skim through uninhabited mangrove forests on a kayak, then hike through a deserted island and wrap up by snorkeling with schools of fish in a wildlife sanctuary. These are just some of the options available with guided expeditions from Virgin Islands Ecotours, which organizes trips on both St. Thomas and St. John. On St. Thomas, the most popular is the three-hour excursion. This includes a paddle

among the many small red mangrove islands, which serve as a nursery for juvenile marine life; a stop at Cas Cay with a stroll to the tidal pools and geological blowhole on the south side; plus a swim over the surrounding coral reef to spy the plentiful rainbow-colored fish. Virgin Islands Ecotours is located at the Mangrove Lagoon. While the cool waters will clearly be calling you as soon as you arrive, be sure to go inland to experience the myriad fun spots found throughout the island. Fly through the air with the greatest of ease at Tree Limin’ Extreme. Six zip lines, two sky bridges and eight breathtaking aerial platforms that span acres of jungle add up to an amazing experience. Located on the island’s lush north side, views above the tropical canopy stretch from the neighboring offshore cays to the British Virgin Islands beyond. Tree Limin’ Extreme is also home to the Caribbean’s “Yo-Yo” zip, an exhilarating backward and forward zip. Play 18 holes when the Mahogany Run Golf Course reopens after hurricane-related repairs are complete. Developed in a picturesque valley and boasting gorgeous views of the Atlantic, the 6,000-yard, par-70 course was designed by globally renowned architects George and Tom Fazio. One of the best views may be from the 14th hole — part of the famed Devil’s Triangle — which sits on a rocky cliff some 200 feet above the ocean.

Heritage Highlights THESE 5 ADMISSIONFREE MUST-SEES OFFER A WINDOW INTO THE ST. THOMAS OF CENTURIES PAST. STEP BACK IN TIME TO LIFE IN THE DANISH West Indies. This Nordic country ruled the Virgin Islands for over 300 years until the United States purchased St. Thomas and its siblings of St. John and St. Croix in 1917. Today, the capital city of Charlotte Amalie, named for a 17th-century Danish queen, boasts remnants of Denmark that include street signs in Danish, red- and whitecolored roofs reminiscent of the Dannebrog and historic sites built by the Danes themselves and their contemporaries.

99 STEPS: Steep hills necessitated the construction of step streets of ballast brick to make it easier to navigate the town. One

STT6 |

of the best known is the 99 Steps. Located on Government Hill, the yellow-hued brick-built steps start about 50 yards west of Government House and link the buildings here to the homes and historic sites such as Blackbeard’s Castle above where there is an excellent view of the harbor. Location: Kongens Gade

EMANCIPATION GARDEN: See the Freedom Statue, a bronze bust of a man blowing a conch shell that’s located on the western side of this tree-lined town square. The figure commemorates the 150th anniversary of then-governor Peter von Scholten’s emancipation proclamation on July 3, 1848. The white-painted wooden bandstand and numerous wooden benches are a great spot for resting up after a shopping jaunt along nearby Main Street. Location: Forte Strade

FREDERICK LUTHERAN CHURCH: Notable for its Neoclassical architecture and Gothic Revival trim, this 18th-century house of worship is one of the oldest Lutheran churches in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1666. Walk up the welcoming arms staircase to the entrance where you can see the stained-glass windows and the altar, which was crafted from local mahogany. Services take place each Sunday. Location: Norre Gade

GOVERNMENT HOUSE: This three-story “White House” was built in the 19th century, with a Neoclassical design that included intricate ironwork along its balconies. These days, it’s the working office of the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Among its notable outside details are the red and white wooden Danish-style guardhouse and First Lady’s garden, located across the street. Location: Kongens Gade SYNAGOGUE: Sand floors are just one remarkable feature of this longest continuously used synagogue in the United States. Built in 1833 for a congregation that was founded in the late 18th century, the Greek Revival temple front opens through white pillars to a high-ceiling sanctuary that features a central Baccarat crystal candelabra and mahogany pews. Next door, the Weibel Museum presents a small but impressive array of plaques and artifacts that memorialize the congregation’s remarkable past. Location: Crystal Gade

Day at the Museum

LOCAL MUSEUMS TAKE YOU ON A TIMELY TOUR OF ST. THOMAS’ COLORFUL PAST. MUSEUMS ARE MAGNIFICENT PORTALS into the past. Step inside, and the astounding artifacts take you to a bygone time and tell a story about famous moments in history. The golden age of piracy is a theme at two St. Thomas museums, albeit in delightfully opposite ways. That is, Fort Christian is the stronghold that has protected Charlotte Amalie’s residents against pirates since its 17th-century founding, while the more recent Pirates Treasure Museum lets visitors in for a thrilling tour of these plunderers’ treasures, traditions and tales.

FORT CHRISTIAN MUSEUM. Take a guided tour or explore on your own. This red painted fort is a focal point in downtown Charlotte Amalie. It opened in the late 1600s and took nearly a decade to build. It’s easy to see why: The walls are three- to six-feet thick, it stands three stories high and its expansive diamond-shaped building and courtyard take up a little more than 1.5

acres. Through the centuries, the fort has served as a protector, a prison, the colonial governor’s residence and government offices, the first church and even as an early cemetery. Exhibits include a small period chapel, an old-fashioned Danish oven and antique furnishings that include a fourposter mahogany bed. The top floor is a must-see. Here, there are model cannons with an eagle-eye view of the harbor to the west, south and east. Location: Forte Strade. Hours: Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission: $10 adults, $7 children ages 5 to 12. Guided tours: 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

exhibits include a working model of an undersea ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) used to explore the ocean floor and a wind chamber that imitates the effects of a Category 1 hurricane. Upstairs, there’s a two-minute virtual reality undersea tour, a replica of a brig and plenty of pirate paraphernalia. Best of all Captain John, a real-life look-alike of Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is always ready to take pictures and tell tales. Location: Route 30, across from the West Indian Company Cruise Ship Dock. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when a cruise ship is in port. Admission: $16 adults, $12 children.

PIRATES TREASURE MUSEUM

To see more of the island’s legacy and playful spirit on display, try the St. Thomas Historical Trust’s museum on Raadets Gade in Charlotte Amalie, the French Heritage Museum in Frenchtown and the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum on Route 30 next to the Pirates Treasure Museum.

Dive into the legends and lore of buccaneers and their booty at this interactive museum, which is owned by actual undersea treasure hunters. The first floor features authentic artifacts, including the oldest-known telescope from a pirate ship. Interactive

Make a SPLASH

NO SURPRISE HERE — ST. THOMAS IS A PARADISE FOR ALL TYPES OF WATERSPORTS. By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D. THERE’S A WHOLE OTHER WORLD TO SEE ON, UNDER and above the sea. That’s because the Atlantic Ocean surrounds St. Thomas to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the south, and some 17 islands, cays and rocks are found within a mile offshore. In fact, over 80 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands is comprised of water — the rest is land. This makes watersports, everything from boating to scuba diving and parasailing, iconic “must-do” activities in this tropical paradise. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

CAST OFF Options for doing this include renting a power vessel, since companies on the east end of the island are perfectly placed to cast off for a day exploring nearby St. John, with its Virgin Islands National Park, and the British Virgin Islands beyond. Nauti Nymph Powerboat Rentals has 29- to 31-foot speedy center console craft, while St. Thomas Boat Rental’s fleet of yachts includes 26- to 40-foot stable-riding power catamarans, which can carry 6 to 12 people aboard, as well as luxury 46- to 55-foot Sea Ray yachts. Captain yourself or hire a captain for the day. For a more laid-back way to skim the seas, charter a sailboat for a day or a week-long sail. Virgin Islands Yacht Charters collection includes roomy 40- to 50-foot catamarans, with three staterooms and three heads, plus 34- to 54-foot traditional monohulls. Both are perfect to take the helm, feel the wind in your hair and sea spray splash your face, or let a hired captain do the driving.

You can also float your boat with a more personalized approach by taking a kayak or paddleboard tour. Virgin Islands Ecotours offers both at the Mangrove Lagoon, a 680acre marine reserve replete with shallow waterways, mangrove forests and small uninhabited islands to explore.

5 Bucket-List Beaches

THESE SUPERB SPOTS DELIVER DIFFERENT WAYS OF ENJOYING THE ISLAND’S SHORELINE. Over 40 sugar-soft, white-sand beaches rim the island of St. Thomas. Some are mere spits, while others are more than a mile long. All are perfect spots for sunning and swimming, resting and relaxing. But these five should be at the top of your to-visit list:

1

BREWERS BAY Watch planes land at the airport across the bay while walking on the shell-strewn sands. This localsfavorite beach is often uncrowded and comes complete with restrooms, picnic tables and food trucks selling saltfish pate, fried chicken legs and johnnycakes. Route 30. Entrance fee: None.

2

COKI BEACH Rainbow-colored schools of fish swim in

waters steps from the beach, making it feel like you’re snorkeling in an aquarium. There’s a watersports shop here with gear for rent. Wooden shack–style shops sell everything from “fish food” (dry dog food pellets) to T-shirts, souvenirs and the unofficial national dish of fish (whole with head on) and fungi (a cornmeal polenta-like side dish). Route 38. Entrance fee: None.

freely. Big waves, especially during the winter, create ideal surfing conditions. A laid-back beach bar and restaurant across the street offers food, drink and live entertainment on most weekends. Route 37. Entrance fee: None.

4

LINDQUIST BEACH Since this pristine beach is part of a

21-acre park, it has a wonderful Robinson Crusoe–like feel: Even the car lot isn’t visible from the wavy waterline. Aside from a restroom, lifeguard and benches, there are no other signs — or services — of civilization. Watch for sea turtles while swimming and snorkeling. Route 38. Entrance fee: $5 per person; free for children under age 12; $2 vehicle parking.

5

MAGENS BAY Named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, this 68-acre waterfront park boasts calm waters, a welcoming arc of white sand and plenty of coconut palms for shade. It’s easy to spend the day. There are picnic tables, restrooms with saltwater showers, lifeguards, an open-air bar and restaurant, paddleboat and kayak rentals and even a boutique in case someone forgot their bathing suit. Route 35. Entrance fee: $5 per person; free for children under age 12; $2 vehicle parking.

Time TRAVELING

LOCATED OFF THE COAST FROM ST. THOMAS, HASSEL ISLAND OFFERS A FASCINATING DAY TRIP INTO THE ISLAND’S HISTORY.

Mother Nature’s volcanic handiwork created the U.S. Virgin Islands eons ago, but Hassel Island is a human invention. Up until the 1860s it was a peninsula of St. Thomas, but the Danish government — which was in charge of the island at the time — wanted to improve circulation in the Charlotte Amalie harbor. So, it dredged a channel at St. Thomas’ western end, thus creating 136acre Hassel Island. Even though it’s a relatively young island, Hassel was far from being virgin territory. Archaeological research by the Virgin Islands National Park Service, which purchased 95 percent of the island in 1978, shows that the ancient Arawak people once called Hassel home. Today, it’s still possible to see and visit remnants of the Napoleonic War era British-built fortifications Fort Willoughby and Garrison House on the island’s east side. To the west is the Creque Marine Railway, one of the oldest steam-operated marine railways, which was built as a base of operations by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company.

HOW TO ENJOY HASSEL WITH NO HASSLE The best way to experience Hassel Island is via a guided historic kayaking tour with Virgin Islands Ecotours (Tel: 877-959-2687 or 340-779-2155). This three-hour adventure begins at the Frenchtown Marina. A short paddle takes you to Garrison House for an informative talk, followed by a brief hike to Fort Willoughby. Kayaking continues back to the Creque Marine Railway. Masks and fins are provided at Garden Bay to explore the reef off the beach. Virgin Islands Ecotours donates a portion of the proceeds from each tour guest to the Friends of Virgin Islands National Park. This donation gives guests a full one-year membership to both organizations. VIRGIN ISLANDS ECOTOURS: HISTORIC HASSEL ISLAND Kayak, Hike and Snorkel Adventures. LOCAL SPOTLIGHT ST. THOMAS

Valerie Peters

SHE’S WORKING TO PRESERVE THE ISLAND’S PRISTINE SURROUNDINGS. By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D.

Valerie’s love for the sea probably started with her adventure-loving father, who actually sailed to St. Thomas from France and enjoyed sailing, fishing and diving. Of course, it also didn’t hurt that she’s lived on St. Thomas all of her life. As a lifelong resident, she developed a unique, firsthand understanding of how special St. Thomas’ environment is — and how important it is to preserve it. “What I like are puzzles, crazy ideas or the things that hurt other people’s heads as they say, and finding solutions,” says Valerie — who brings degrees in International Business and Tourism and Travel Services Management, as well as several years’ experience working as convention manager at island resorts — to tackling real-world brainteasers. A good example is when Valerie impressively orchestrated seven events, including five fireworks displays, on three islands, all on one night: New Year’s Eve 1999.

STT22 |

VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

What I like are puzzles, crazy ideas ... and finding solutions. The new millennium presented Valerie with the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream, that is, to serve as marketing director at the Coral World Ocean Park, an eco-park located on the east side of the island. This ended up as the first step on a path that would take her deep into the environmental arena. In 2001, Valerie coordinated an exhibition for the United States’ Coral Reef Task Force at an island hotel. There, she met professionals affiliated with the Blue Flag program, one of the world’s most recognized voluntary eco-labels awarded to beaches and marinas. Valerie would then go on to launch Blue Flag USVI in 2010. Soon after, she went even further with her

environmental endeavors by volunteering with the Virgin Islands Conservation Society (VICS). Most recently, and despite two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017 which left her homeless, Valerie has successfully launched two major environmental programs in the Virgin Islands. One is Eco Schools, a national program that puts an understanding of the outside world inside the classroom via educational curricula. The second is the VI Clean Coasts Campaign, an initiative aimed to help local businesses reduce the use of single-use plastics. “Launching these programs have been some of my proudest accomplishments. It’s given me an opportunity to get off my soapbox and move beyond being a token tree hugger. After all, I firmly believe that education is the way to sustain our islands,” says Valerie. Judi Nagelberg

THIS DESTINATION MANAGEMENT EXTRAORDINAIRE ARRIVED IN ST. THOMAS AS A VISITOR AND DECIDED TO MAKE IT HER HOME. By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D.

Her story sounds similar to a Hollywood movie screenplay. A young girl escapes the confines of a strict upbringing in a small New Jersey town for life in the big city of New York. Then she flies off to vacation on a tropical island paradise, settles down and lives happily ever after. This is the true story of how Judi Nagelberg, owner of Island Meetings & Incentives, made St. Thomas her home. Over the past half-century, Judi has welcomed scores of visitors, ranging from everyday folks to famous politicians, poets and public officials. What’s more, hers is a story of a self-described people person and risk taker who believes in the power of being happy even in the face of catastrophe — and continues to successfully survive and thrive both personally and professionally.

lived an incredible life, and I’m happy to say I’m still home,” she says. The path towards an extraordinary island life started serendipitously when her landlord — a local businessman — told Judi about a position with the Department of Tourism. The year was 1967. She took the job and almost immediately was given a $1 million budget — plus the assistance of a coworker and board — to host the annual Governor’s Conference that would coincide with the

— on St. Thomas’ Magens Bay. It was onthe-job-experience that no book could offer and that no class could teach, and it opened the door for Judi to start her own company in 1988. Since then, she’s met and worked with thousands of VIPs, including Maya Angelou and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Like a good Hollywood movie, Judi’s story has a key crescendo point. For Judi and her fellow Virgin Islanders, this happened in 2017, when two hurricanes disrupted daily life and pulled the rug out from under the tourism industry. Never one to look at the glass as being half-empty, Judi has since been resourceful, imaginative and reinventive. This has meant working with smaller groups of visitors, managing informal events and using her organizational skills to support nonprofits in helping the community. However, one thing that has remained constant for Judi: her regular weekly swim at Magens Bay.

I fell in love with the island, with its people and immediately felt like I was home.

“I fell in love with the island, with its people and immediately felt like I was home,” says Judi of her second trip to St. Thomas, which took place after day-tripping to the island two years earlier while visiting nearby Puerto Rico. “I sent a telegram to my boss: ‘Not returning, letter to follow.’ Then I asked a friend who had keys to my apartment to pack up my things and send them to me. I’ve

50-year anniversary of the U.S. purchase of the Virgin Islands from Denmark. Since there were not enough accommodations on island at that time, Judi chartered the SS Independence to offer extra lodging for guests. She also coordinated conference events on the sibling islands of St. Croix and St. John and hosted a picnic for over 1,000 people — including governors Ronald Reagan, Spiro Agnew and Nelson Rockefeller

“It’s all about being creative, maintaining what you have and being open to change, to be ready when we soon get back to normalcy,” she says. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

STEEP SAVINGS AND ONE-OF-A-KIND FINDS MAKE ST. THOMAS IDEAL FOR ALL TYPES OF SHOPPERS. By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D. THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTE AMALIE MIGHT NOT BE PAVED WITH GOLD. However, Main Street, the shopping capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is lined with snazzy shops and name-brand boutiques selling gold as well as silver, platinum and precious gems like diamonds, sapphires and rubies all crafted into spectacular pieces of jewelry. That’s not all. Main Street, along with several other locales on the island, collectively add up to St. Thomas as a shopper’s paradise. There’s everything from incredible “something specials” to one-of-a-kind handicrafts, simple yet significant souvenirs for family and friends and must-haves like

beachwear. What’s more, the duty-free allowance in the U.S. Virgin Islands is twice that of other Caribbean islands. Plan to spend a full morning or afternoon cruising the shops on Main Street for some Caribbean-style retail therapy. The buildings here were once warehouses for

the goods that were off- and onloaded by European ships sailing into port. Today, items such as jewelry, cameras, perfume, china, crystal, electronics and tobacco sell for 30 to 60 percent less than prices on the U.S. mainland, while several cafés and restaurants (continued on pg. STT30)

make for perfect mid-shop refueling stops. Plus, Emancipation Gardens, at the head of Main Street, and Roosevelt Park one block east, are two places with shade-covered benches that are ideal for a scenic break. Several other hot spots to shop span the island. The Crown Bay Center, located a mile and a half west of Charlotte Amalie, boasts over a dozen stores and kiosks that open whenever a cruise ship is in port. The Havensight Mall, a five-building complex filled with shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, bank and post office, sits at the West Indian Company cruise ship dock, a little over a mile east of town. Right next door is the Port of Sale Mall and the Shops at Yacht Haven Grande. Red Hook, at the island’s far eastern end, offers clothing, jewelry and souvenir stores along with a supermarket, pharmacy and bank. A great place for necessities is the Tutu Park Shopping Mall, where a major supermarket and department store bookend several smaller shops that make up the island’s only enclosed mall. U.S. residents, including children, can take home up to $1,600 each from a shopping spree in the U.S. Virgin Islands without having to pay taxes or duties. It’s also possible to send gifts (except for alcohol and tobacco) to family and friends back home, as long as their value is no higher than $100 each day. Great prices on liquor are matched by an equally good deal that lets you bring back six liters rather than five if one of the products is made in the Virgin Islands, such as Cruzan rum.

WELCOME TO

ST. JOHN By Andrea Milam

ST. JOHN MIGHT BE THE SMALLEST OF THE THREE main U.S. Virgin Islands, but with a majority of its nearly 20 square miles protected by Virgin Islands National Park (VINP), it offers the biggest dose of natural beauty. You’ll arrive by ferry to the charming, walkable town of Cruz Bay, where quaint shops and unique restaurants abound. Coral Bay, on the island’s eastern side, is an even smaller town where the pace is set by the slow-moving goats and donkeys that meander freely along the road. With hiking trails that ascend to sweeping vistas, 18th-century plantation ruins that inspire wonder and reverie, along with gorgeously unspoiled north shore beaches, St. John offers a simplistic, nature-centric and utterly exquisite getaway. Experience the one-of-a-kind culture that’s evolved from the island’s storied past.

ANNABERG PLANTATION: Formerly one of the island’s most productive sugar plantations, this protected historic site gives a true glimpse into the 18th and 19th century Danish plantation era. IN ONE SPOT AND IN ONE SHOT, YOU CAN DELVE INTO THE MANY BLESSINGS THAT MOTHER NATURE BESTOWED ON ST. JOHN. Immersing yourself in nature is not hard on St. John thanks to the plethora of natural wonders found in the Virgin Islands National Park (VINP). Here are some of the best ways to experience the island’s natural bounty in different parts of the park.

GO TO THE GLYPHS: Descend the island’s popular Reef Bay trail to see the beguiling petroglyphs, likely carved into rocks by the Taínos who inhabited St. John around 1,000 years ago. Join one of the regularly scheduled VINP guided hikes of this trail, and not only will you pick up plenty of interesting facts from the ranger leading the way, you’ll also travel back to Cruz Bay in style — by boat via the island’s south shore. www.friendsvinp.org

FOR THE BIRDS: Explore three unique bird habitats on the guided Francis Bay bird walk, scheduled for Fridays at 7:30 a.m. Self-proclaimed bird nerd/VINP supervisory ranger Laurel Brannick leads the weekly walk, which goes through a forest, by the ocean and around a salt pond. www.nps.gov/viis/index.htm

SPICE IT UP: If you’re lucky enough to be on St. John during a dry period, make Salt Pond one of your first stops. The salt pond for which this beautiful beach is named lies just behind the sandy shoreline, and when it’s dry enough, the pond’s water evaporates, leaving countless pounds of salt at its edges. Nothing beats seasoning your dishes with all natural, self-harvested pure island sea salt. www.nps.gov/viis/index.htm

LEARN SOMETHING NEW: Every year from January through April, the Friends of the VINP hosts a series of seminars that introduce visitors to some of the island’s most special resources — its knowledgeable residents. Learn about piracy with the VINP’s archaeologist, discover medicinal uses for island plants or sample rums from across the Caribbean. Sign up early, as these popular seminars fill up fast. www.friendsvinp.org GET TRASHED: If you find yourself enamored by the island’s pristine beauty and you want to help keep it that way, join the volunteer group Get Trashed for their next cleanup. About once a month, the group gathers at a beach or shoreline to clean up litter, and they generally reward themselves with an after-party or happy hour gathering. Help beautify St. John while mingling with residents who care about the environment’s well-being — it’s a winning idea all around. www.facebook.com/gettrashedstj/ VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

GO BEYOND SUN AND SAND TO EXPLORE THE ISLAND’S INLAND CHARMS.

By Andrea Milam

THE STUNNING SEA THAT SURROUNDS ST. JOHN IS AN OBVIOUS DRAW FOR VISITORS, but there’s just as much to do and see on land. Whether you want to get your heart rate up with a competitive tennis match or bring it down a notch with some tranquil beachfront yoga, check out these active outdoor pursuits, island-style. HIKING: Numerous trails crisscross the island. Some lead to sweeping views, others lead to beaches, and many take hikers past historic Danish plantation ruins. Opt for an easy stroll at the accessible Francis Bay trail or challenge yourself with something more strenuous like the Caneel Hill trail, where a viewing platform offers incredible 360-degree island and ocean views. Exploring by foot is one of the best ways to experience St. John’s beauty. HORSEBACK RIDING: There’s something so peaceful about meandering slowly over island trails by horseback. Carolina Corral offers guided rides on rescue horses that are lovingly and painstakingly cared for by owner Dana Bartlett, whose gentle communication

with the horses — and donkeys, goats, sheep and countless other animals that call the Corral home — will be a highlight of your day. www.horsesstjohn.com

TENNIS: Fire up your competitive spirit with an island tennis match. The Westin St. John, set to reopen in 2019, offers six artificial grass courts, while two public courts in town are a great spot to pick up a match with a local. The Westin offers lessons and the chance to match you up against players at your skill level. www.westinresortstjohn.com

GEOCACHING: You can hunt for treasure on St. John, but it’s not pirate’s gold that you’ll find. Small trinkets, known as “caches,” are hidden in various places across the

island, just waiting to be discovered by newbie and novice geocachers alike. Take a found trinket for yourself and leave a new one behind in its place, or simply add your name and date to the log that accompanies most caches. www.geocaching.com

YOGA: St. John has a way of inspiring relaxation. Why not take it further with some soul-centering yoga? This is a popular activity on St. John among both residents and visitors, and the varied classes and venues ensure you’ll find your perfect match. From beachfront meditations to the challenging yet calming stand-up paddle board yoga, St. John offers unique yoga experiences. www.facebook.com/doyogastjohnvi VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

ON THE WATER ST. JOHN

IT’S NO SECRET THAT ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT ST. JOHN IS THE WATERS surrounding the island. Whether you want to paddle through the silky blue sea under your own power or you prefer to motor through at top speed, the island offers countless ways for you to experience and interact with all the ocean has to offer. KAYAKING AND SUP: There’s something so satisfying about paddling through the sea, taking in the coral, turtles, and fish from above. If you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person, try out a paddle board rental. Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a relatively easy, peaceful activity that doesn’t require a lot of strength or skill. Just remember to stand in the middle of the board, plant your feet about shoulder width apart, keep your knees slightly bent and paddle! You may fall off once or twice while you get the hang of it, and that’s okay. It happens to the best of us. Arawak Expeditions, conveniently located in Mongoose Junction, will help you load your board onto the soft rack they provide for the top of your rental car, and you’ll get

STJ12 |

VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

a brief free introduction to the sport. Arawak will also deliver a board to you at your rental home or at the beach, and weekly rentals are available. Virgin Islands Ecotours also offers SUP rentals as part of their day pass packages at Honeymoon Beach or Hansen Bay, and they offer weekly rentals as well. Another option for exploring on your own is a kayak rental, which Arawak and Virgin Islands Ecotours both offer. If you’d prefer a guided experience, both businesses offer tours. Try out Arawak’s half-day trip, which takes you to Honeymoon Beach and Henley Cay, or their full-day trip, which includes a picnic lunch and several routes to choose from. Virgin Islands Ecotours combines their kayak tours with snorkel and hiking stops,

with destinations including the waters off Caneel Bay Resort and Henley Cay. For a truly unforgettable excursion, check out Arawak’s multi-day kayak and camping trip. Kayaking between the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and camping on the beach under the stars as part of this five-day trip is a once-ina-lifetime experience.

SNORKELING AND DIVING: If you’re more interested in what’s going on below the surface, try your hand at snorkeling or scuba diving. St. John is one of those islands where visitors are lucky enough to be able to snorkel right from the shore, transitioning from pristine white sands to the tranquil underwater world with ease. If it’s turtles you seek, head to Maho Bay, where the turtle

population continues to thrive in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Salt Pond Bay, on the island’s south shore, is known to be home to a spotted eagle ray who makes appearances from time to time, and you’re sure to see an octopus or two when you snorkel the underwater trail at Trunk Bay. If you’re really lucky, you might get a visit from the wild dolphins that are known to frequent the waters around St. John. Both Arawak and Virgin Islands Ecotours offer rentals of highquality snorkel equipment. And if you’re in the mood to plunge in even deeper, try a scuba diving excursion with Cruz Bay Watersports. They’ve been in the diving business for decades, so whether you’re a beginner or you’re looking to earn a certification, you know you’ll be in good hands. On a good day, visibility goes up to 100 feet, and life on the sea floor is nearly as lush as the island’s hills. Sea fans, sponges, hard and soft corals, and all the fish and other marine life that call them home are enchanting to witness firsthand.

SAILING AND PRIVATE CHARTERS: Boat days are the best days in the Virgin Islands. Stay local and zip over to Pizza Pi, a sailboat that serves up some of the most delicious pizza around, or head over to the British Virgin Islands for some world-class snorkeling and a day of fun and revelry at White Bay, where the Painkillers flow and the party vibes don’t stop. Custom charters, offered by both Cruz Bay Watersports and Calypso Charters, are the best way to plan your perfect day on the water. Or you can let the experts do the planning for you with a boating tour. Cruz Bay Watersports will take you to White Bay for the day, to Pizza Pi for lunch and a snorkel, or on an enchanting champagne sunset sail. Calypso Charters’ 49-foot power cat, Bad Kitty, takes visitors on a “Best of the BVI” tour to The Baths in Virgin Gorda, then to a snorkel stop before ending the day at Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke. You can also skip the customs fees and stay local with

their USVI trip, with stops to beaches and reefs only accessible by boat.

FISHING: As you might imagine, the Virgin Islands offers a thrilling fishing experience. Treat yourself to a fishing charter and your captain will likely steer you directly to the North Drop, about 20 miles north of St. Thomas, or the South Drop, about eight miles south of the island. In these steep underwater drop-offs, migrating schools of fish congregate, attracting predators like tuna, wahoo and billfish. Game fish like marlin will give you the fight of your life, so bring your stamina and determination. Fishing from shore is a rarity here, and with much of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park, you’ll want to read up on the park’s regulations before attempting to do so. No matter which option you choose, you can’t go wrong with a day on the water in St. John, and it’s sure to be the highlight of your vacation. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

BEACHES ST. JOHN

Sublime SANDS

IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A BEACH ON ST. JOHN TO FIT EVERY TASTE: HERE ARE A FEW TO TRY. On St. John, where each beach is more beautiful than the last, deciding where to sink your toes into the sand for the day can be an overwhelming task. From glowing white sands to lush undersea reefs to unique cobblestone shorelines, each beach entices with its own special charm.

BEACH BABIES: Maho Bay’s constant calmness paired with its sandy, gradual entry and crystal-clear waters make it the perfect place to introduce your little ones to the beauty of a day at the beach, St. John–style. Sea grape and maho trees line the shoreline to offer up gorgeously dappled shade, while the turtles that graze on seagrass just off the shore will surely delight the whole family.

ALL YOURS: Stretch out on beautiful Denis Bay, and listen: no rowdy beachgoers. It’s just you, the sun, the sand and the sea gently rolling to shore. There’s a short hike to get to this secluded north shore beach, but your reward for the effort is a day of beachy bliss.

CLASSIC BEAUTY: Trunk Bay is popular for a reason. If you can deal with the crowds,

HAWKSNEST BEACH (ABOVE) TRUNK BAY (BELOW)

spend the day feeling the island’s softest sand between your toes and marveling at the impossibly brilliant turquoise waters at the island’s most beautiful beach. Check the cruise ship schedule ahead of time and head to Trunk Bay on a day when no ships are in for a slightly less crowded experience. https://cinnamonbayresort.com

TAKING THE PLUNGE: Most St. John beaches offer something to see below the surface, but Salt Pond on the island’s south shore wins this category hands down. Stingrays, turtles, a variety of corals and sponges, eels and too many species of fish to count can be seen here. When you’re finished snorkeling, the beautiful, shaded, white-sand beach awaits for some wellearned relaxation. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT ST. JOHN

Steve Simonsen © DAVID BERG

HIS UNERRING EYE HAS ALLOWED HIM TO CAPTURE THE VIBRANCY OF ST. JOHN BOTH ON LAND AND DEEP UNDER ITS WARM WATERS. By Andrea Milam Since he arrived on St. John in 1991, Steve Simonsen has spent nearly as much time below the surface as he has on land. His appreciation and gratitude for the sea is evident in his magical underwater photos, which have graced countless magazine covers. Steve’s images of the island’s abovethe-surface beauty are just as alluring, and his stunning coffee table book, Living Art, remains popular among Love City fans more than a decade after it was first published. Though Steve is the longeststanding professional photographer on island, he’s not ready to slow down just yet. In fact, he continues to evolve while chasing his ultimate dream of becoming an accomplished cinematographer — even after Hurricane Irma, a particularly harrowing experience for Steve. He was caught outside during the height of the storm, wearing his son’s football helmet to protect his head as the home he and his wife, Janet, had bought in 1991 and paid off in full six months prior, blew apart and was completely destroyed. Despite what he went through that terrifying day, Steve and Janet remain ever committed to their island home, and they’re working to rebuild.

“Simply put, we love our history here and we love our friends and community,” Steve says. “We can’t imagine living anywhere more wonderful, even after the hurricanes. The natural beauty of the island and people are still hard to beat.” How did you decide on photography as a career? When I was at school in Boulder, I got into diving and began underwater photography there. I had plenty of people tell me that they were working 40-hour weeks, so they could go on vacation and dive. They said, “If this is what you love to do, you should make it a career.” You don’t have to hear that many times before realizing it’s true, and it was the right move for me. I began my career in earnest doing underwater photography in Cozumel, and I was just blown away by the crazy color patterns of things like the sponges and the fish. I thought, “The only way to share this is to take pictures and show people.” I’m also fascinated by the water itself. It’s in constant motion, wobbling, wiggling and creating weird reflections. I’ve spent a large part of my underwater career specializing in pictures that show the

underside of the surface of the water and reflect objects like coral or turtles. What is your greatest accomplishment? Self-publishing my coffee table book, Living Art. I went to big publishers with the idea and they all said the same thing: “St. John is too small of a topic for a book to be successful, so we’d be interested if you did all three islands.” But that wasn’t the idea. I live on St. John, and I know that the kind of people who really love St. John have a special feeling about it. That’s the audience I was creating the book for. The Friends of the Park ended up funding the first print run, and as a result, they shared in the profits, which brought in a substantial amount of money for them. That felt good. What is a hidden gem on St. John that visitors should check out? Many people don’t know this, but there’s a Spanish anchor in plain sight underwater at Denis Bay. Right off the dock you can see something black sticking out of the sand in the perfect shape of a spade. It’s just the top of a 2,000-pound, 200- to 300-year-old anchor covered with sun anemones.

SHOPPING ST. JOHN

SHOPPING ON ST. JOHN IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND EXPERIENCE. Here, you’ll find shops run by small business owners selling the carefully curated wares they’ve sourced locally and from across the globe. There are no chain stores on this island. The main town of Cruz Bay is easily walkable, anchored on either end by two shopping destinations, each offering up their own kind of island charm. Lining the Cruz Bay beachfront is Wharfside Village, where you’ll find charming little shops like Bamboo Studio, just steps from the ferry dock. Many of their designs give a nod to the island — like petroglyph-themed earrings, rings and bracelets — as well as their take on the well-known hook bracelet, whose hook is shaped like a “J” for St. John. Bamboo Studio’s charms and pendants display the outline of St. John or feature a compass rose with the island’s latitude and longitude coordinates. You can also customize your own charm or bracelet with a loved one’s name or initials. There’s even a dedicated hurricane collection, featuring an iconic hurricane-themed swirl incorporated into pendants, earrings and bracelets, showcasing the island’s strength and resilience following Irma. Also in Wharfside Village is Freebird Creations, an island institution that’s sold an eclectic collection of jewelry and duty-free watches for nearly three decades. The store features the popular petroglyph

design in earrings, rings and pendants, as well as money clips, belt buckles, brooches, cufflinks and key rings. Other themed collections include Larimar, pearl, sea life and mermaid, pirates and certified ancient and shipwreck coins, sure to serve as conversation starters. Freebird also offers its own hurricane-themed collection, featuring a Larimar IrMaria bracelet, with 4mm of Larimer serving as the eye of the storm, and five wraps of 14k gold on either side of the hurricane symbol, representing the two Category 5 hurricanes the Virgin Islands survived in 2017. Located on the other side of Cruz Bay near the ferry dock, Mongoose Junction is a lush, inviting complex featuring native stone designs and tranquil water features. Shopping has never been a more calming experience. Stop here to pick up lunch from the North Shore Deli on your way to one of the island’s beautiful beaches, or enjoy a relaxing breezeway lunch at Sun Dog Cafe. Browse creations by local artists

Stunning island photographs are incorporated into works of art at the St. John Experience Gallery, and Just BEach has everything you need for a fabulous day on island, including sunscreen, snorkel gear rentals, hats, swimsuit cover-ups and much more. Perhaps one of the most unique stores at Mongoose Junction is Caravan Gallery. Jewelry, gifts and ancient artifacts from around the world come together in one captivating space at this boutique, adjacent to the Tap Room. Taking in all that Caravan Gallery has to offer is like perusing a treasure chest. African masks, Buddha statues and artwork featuring ancient fossils evoke a different time and place, while keepsake boxes and wood inlaid cribbage boards make for whimsical gifts. Among Caravan’s

jewelry collection, you’ll find the traditional St. John petroglyphs and hook bracelets, along with their take on the hurricane theme — a Bad Sisters bracelet that features iconic representations of Irma and Maria. The Marketplace, also located in Cruz Bay, has an ATM, pharmacy, deli and mail center. Eight miles away, Coral Bay offers a small collection of shops that are as charming and eclectic as the town itself. In both Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, you’ll find a decent selection of supermarkets with a surprising range of products. Starfish Market, conveniently located at The Marketplace in Cruz Bay, is perhaps the most similar to the grocery stores you shop at home. Their weekly sales offer competitive pricing, and you can find everything you’ll need for meals and snacks during your time on the island — from fresh produce to gluten-free items.

Starfish’s full-service deli serves up freshly sliced meats and cheeses along with pizzas made in-house, ideal beach picnic foods like coleslaw and chicken salad, hearty meals like fried chicken and french fries, made-to-order sandwiches, and traditional West Indian foods like curry chicken. Specialty cheeses and a wide variety of beer, wine and spirits round out the offerings here, and there’s plenty of on-site parking, making shopping a breeze. You can also arrange to have your food waiting at your villa for you with Starfish’s easy online ordering and provisioning services. No matter what shopping needs you have or what kind of goodies you decide to bring home — whether a souvenir T-shirt or hook bracelet — you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for at St. John’s shopping establishments. These treasures will bring a smile to your face long after you’ve departed, as you remember your happy time on St. John.

GIVING BACK U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

KENNY’S LOVE FOR

LOVE CITY

Country music singer Kenny Chesney’s love of St. John is no secret, and when Hurricane Irma devastated the island, he was among the first to step up to help. From sending in supplies like generators, rakes, shovels and other tools needed for the initial cleanup to food, water, medicine and other necessities, Kenny’s efforts started as soon as the skies cleared. The Love for Love City foundation was formed “from the heart of Kenny Chesney’s No Shoes Nation,” the organization says, and that group helped evacuate more than 1,000 people from St. John. As the island’s recovery progressed, it was announced in June that Kenny would continue to help the island by donating all the proceeds from his new album, Songs for the Saints, to the Love for Love City fund. He also personally delivered new instruments to the St. John School of the Arts, where he visited with faculty and students. For more information on the foundation, go to https://loveforlovecity.org.

DINING ST. JOHN

Fare with

FLAIR

SCALE UP, DIAL IT BACK OR KEEP IT SIMPLE: ST. JOHN SATISFIES ALL KINDS OF CULINARY APPETITES. By Andrea Milam

ST. JOHN MIGHT BE SMALL, BUT THE ISLAND’S DINING options are surprisingly numerous and varied. Whether you’re looking for quick and easy sandwiches to take to the beach, a casual beachfront happy hour or a fine-dining experience, the island delivers. CASUAL AND FUN: There’s plenty of fresh, easy and delicious fare to be had for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with countless happy hour options. Cruz Bay is where you’ll find the biggest concentration of dining venues. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at various restaurants here, most of which are open-air, allowing you to enjoy the cool island breezes. Coral Bay serves up an impressive array of dining options considering its small size, and most restaurants on this side of the island lean towards the casual. Sunday brunch is available at restaurants in both Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and many restaurants have happy hour drink specials; some offer food specials during happy hour as well.

UPSCALE AND INCREDIBLE: If you want to go all out for a showstopping meal, St. John offers a surprising array of fine-dining establishments. French and Spanish cuisines feature prominently on the high-end dining scene, and of course you’ll find fresh seafood on most upscale restaurant menus. The level of service matches the quality of food at the island’s fine-dining options, which are all located on the Cruz Bay side. Go all out for an elegant evening, and you’ll surely be talking about your incredible meal for years to come. DINE IN: Perhaps you prefer to spend time in the kitchen yourself when you’re on vacation. Most of the island’s accommodations, consisting largely of private condos, homes and villas, offer their own fully equipped kitchens, making cooking in easy and a pleasure. The island’s grocery stores are well stocked, and sale pricing is surprisingly competitive. Alternatively, treat yourself with a catered night in. Skilled St. John caterers will cook you a meal in-house, allowing you to enjoy

your beautiful vacation accommodations paired with a delightful, custom meal. LOCAL FOODS: You’d be remiss to visit the Caribbean and not try the local food. There are a handful of options in Cruz Bay, and the local food called pate — a pastry stuffed with spiced chicken, beef, saltfish or vegetables then deep fried — makes for an excellent handheld snack. If you’re on island in June, don’t miss the annual Food Fair, when local vendors line the Cruz Bay waterfront and sell up delicious local goodies like tarts, jams and jellies, tamarind balls, local juices, curry chicken and more. PICNIC AT THE BEACH: There are no food options at St. John beaches, so if you’re planning to stay awhile, you’ll want to bring your own. Grabbing a sandwich from one of Cruz Bay’s delis or picking up a plate of food at an island grocery store, where you’ll find surprisingly delicious fried chicken and other picnic foods like pasta salad and coleslaw, is a convenient way to ensure you and your crew stay sated during your time at the beach. DINING DRESS CODE Whether you’re eating at the most upscale restaurant or enjoying happy hour at the beach, the dress code on St. John is decidedly casual. Even at the most high-end establishments, men are welcomed in shorts and a short-sleeve collared shirt, and women can wear sundresses. Leave the high heels, hair products and makeup at home. Flip-flops are acceptable footwear in all dining venues. Do note, however, that shirt and shoes must be worn at all establishments and when you’re anywhere other than the beach. Local culture tends to be conservative, and it’s best to respect the locals and cover up when you leave the beach. Dine in, enjoy a casual beachfront breakfast, or treat yourself to an evening of fine dining — or do a little bit of each. With the island’s numerous restaurants, bars and supermarkets, you’ll never run out of options and you’re sure to find several that leave you feeling pleasantly full and happy.

ACCOMMODATIONS ST. JOHN

The SUITE LIFE

LODGING OPTIONS TEND TO BE AS UNIQUELY APPEALING AS THE REST OF THE ISLAND’S CHARMS. If you’re looking for a place to stay on St. John, you’ll want to skip those major hotel websites. With the exception of the Westin St. John, which is set to reopen following renovations in early 2019, there are no major hotels on the island. Most accommodations consist of small inns, private homes, villas and condos, and there’s a wide range of price points — from cozy studios to incredible six-bedroom villas with sweeping ocean views. Because much of the island is protected by the Virgin Islands National Park, beachfront accommodations are few and far between. One of the few true oceanside options is Gallows Point Resort, located on a peninsula at the mouth of Cruz Bay. This collection of condos is known for its lush landscaping; entering the grounds is a true tropical escape, and the verdant palms and bright flowering plants that line the walkways add an air of privacy to each unit. The newly renovated pool deck is ideal for some early morning yoga, or relax poolside with an afternoon cocktail and watch the boat traffic move in and out of Cruz Bay. There’s excellent snorkeling just off the point, and a swim platform for when you need a rest or want to adjust your mask and fins. Gallows offers on-site dining at their Ocean 362 restaurant, where you’ll find arguably the best sunset views on the island, and the resort’s convenient location means you can walk right into town for shopping, happy hour, or to catch some live music. St. Croix offers a number of celebrations and festivals that you definitely want to work into your itinerary while you’re on the island. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT ST. CROIX

VW Club of St. Croix

THIS LOCAL CLUB IS KEEPING TRADITIONS ALIVE WITH THESE UNIQUE ISLAND VEHICLES. By Anquanette Gaspard

The St. Croix Twin City VW Club is changing the way people view automobile clubs. Usually when these clubs get together, they’re cruising around the town in large groups, working on the cars’ interior and exterior or just plain hanging out. However, club president Tyrone Luke and the 25 members are doing more than cruising around St. Croix in their vintage Volkswagen buggies. They’re giving back to the local community in more ways than one and are committed to making an impact on the lives of children and families on the island. How did the club get its start? Growing up, my dad and brothers all had Volkswagen vehicles. It was all I really knew and saw the most of as a kid, so in 1995, I got my first Volkswagen bug. My love for these cars is what made me start the St. Croix Twin City VW Club in 2011. The purpose and overall mission for the club is to help showcase the cars around the island at various charity events, fundraisers and community events. How has the club evolved into what it is today? What originally started as a club has become more of a family over time. Throughout the years, we’ve become well known throughout the community because of our unwavering support to charities and nonprofit organizations on the island. We sponsor and lend our support at the family fun day hosted by the Department of Agriculture at the Agriculture Fair Grounds. We promote the event around the island by encouraging others to come out and bring their families

for a free fun day that’s filled with activities. We’ve also been huge supporters of the St. Croix Educational Complex Vocational School’s auto mechanic class. They have a car show and shine event in conjunction with Napa Auto Parts where we go out in droves with our vehicles and educate them on Volkswagen buggies. They’re unlike most cars out there, and because they’re typically older, they operate and are cared for differently. We get to share our knowledge with these students. What would you say has been the biggest accomplishment since the club started? Our biggest accomplishment has been supporting our charities, which is our local chapter of Toys for Tots and the St. Croix Boys and Girls Club. Each year, these two charities join forces to organize a live and silent auction on the first Thursday of December to raise money for underprivileged kids on St. Croix. The club does a presentation at the auction called Bike a Bug, where each VW bug in the club donates a bike to the organizations. At a separate event the following week, we do a ride out to the Boys and Girls Club facility in Frederiksted with Santa Claus and the fire trucks. There, we put the names of all the children into a hat and gift the bikes to the names that are drawn. We’ve been doing this for the last four years, and it’s such a rewarding experience for us as well as the children. What is the makeup of the club members? Some of our members are born and raised in St. Croix. Others are from the neighboring

Caribbean islands such as Dominica, Antigua, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia. We have a diverse culture of members who all have a love for Volkswagen buggies. What upcoming events or initiatives is the club working on? We have an annual anniversary drive out and beach picnic that happens every April. We make it into a fun day for the community. We provide free food and drinks and invite the local charities we support to come and have a day of fun with us. On this day, we combine forces with the different car and motorcycle clubs on the island — the Classic Car Club, STX Jeep Club and the 340 Misfits Motorcycle Club — and we ride out to the picnic location. The drive starts mid-island from the Sunny Isles Shopping Center and heads to Cramer’s Park Beach where the picnic is held. What do you think is a hidden gem on island? Some people don’t know it, but the most southern point of the United States is located right here on St. Croix at Point Udall. We often visit the site with the other car clubs when we have a full moon because the view up there is priceless! What’s your favorite local dish? Our club loves food! The one thing we can agree to be a favorite local dish is kallaloo. Even though everyone has their own version of this soup, our local greens are what make ours different. I personally enjoy mixed kallaloo with seafood and pigtail because it’s like the best of both worlds. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

Pampered PALATE

WHETHER YOU’RE AN ADVENTUROUS EATER OR ALWAYS OPT FOR THE SAME FOODIE FAVORITES, ST. CROIX WILL DEFINITELY ENSURE THAT YOU GET YOUR FILL. By Anquanette Gaspard SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD AND LOCALLY GROWN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DRIVE BOTH

St. Croix’s authentic island cuisine and its superbly prepared selection of international favorites, allowing for some major palate pampering all over the island. ISLAND INDULGENCES: One way to kick off your sampling of local fare is by trading in your morning coffee for a cup of local bush tea. Pair this intoxicating medley of mint, lemongrass and basil with local homemade butter bread or a coconut pastry. Or you can sample a heartier Crucian breakfast that has been enjoyed by locals for generations: a nourishing plate of saltfish and smoked herring, boiled egg, spinach, banana fritters and johnnycakes (a delicious deep-fried dough). If you’re looking for a snack, try a savory pate. These are flaky pastries that are filled with spiced beef, chicken or veggies. And no meal on St. Croix is complete without a popular local drink like passion fruit, tamarind, sorrel, mauby or ginger beer.

CASUAL CHOICES: In addition to the local fare, visitors will find a variety of cuisines available throughout the island, including American, Asian, Italian and Mexican. These international options are often casual fare that are perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner while exploring the island. For instance, you can pair a picture-perfect view with a tasty lunch at Rum Runners on the Christiansted Boardwalk, which features a fresh catch of the day, soups, salads and wraps. Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there’s something for everyone at this popular downtown restaurant. Find the tastiest pizza on island at East End Pizza at Divi Carina Bay Resort & Casino, and be sure to order the exclusive Pleasure Spot cocktail, which is only available here.

ELEVATED EATS: Of course, more elegant options are also on the table in St. Croix. Head west to Fredericksted and catch a spectacular sunset any night of the week while dining on jumbo lump crab in a passion fruit vinaigrette and eggplant caprese at Beachside Café at Sand Castle on the Beach. The amazing views in their open-air, seaside terrace restaurant elevates your meal to the next level. The culinary landscape on the island has evolved into one with an intense focus on sustainable agriculture and eco-friendly processes and techniques that support and protect the environment. Balter is one of the most notable restaurants on St. Croix that prides itself in this practice, crafting delectable dishes and artisanal cocktails with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The Buccaneer

Deciding on your dwelling when visiting St. Croix really depends on what kind of experience you’re after: The island’s accommodations options are diverse enough to fit a wide range of expectations. Below we look at a few of the options. RECHARGE: Some of us want energizing experiences when we get away — which is fine. But a lot of us simply want to kick back, and St. Croix delivers on that fundamental wish at a variety of charming resorts that feature the usual oh-so-good amenities like spas, snorkeling, golf and tennis. One good option is The Buccaneer, the Caribbean’s longest-running resort. Here, guests can experience a touch of Old World charm with a heaping dose of warm island hospitality. For those in need of charming sea or garden view accommodations nestled in lush green hills, Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa is the perfect choice. Each room is trimmed in tropical wood featuring private screened-in porches with built-in couches and fully furnished kitchenettes as an added bonus. At press time, this resort was still closed due to the hurricane, so please contact them directly for a reopening date. RECONNECT: If you’re looking to get back in tune with nature, a number of eco-lodgings can help you. Some are tucked away in the

hills of the rainforest; others are a short walk from beaches, nestled in the valley. You can opt for a rustic eco-bungalow built from local tropical hardwood or elegant, beautifully appointed villas. Hikes through gorgeous walking trails, yoga, kayaking, scuba diving and picking local fresh fruit are just some of the eco-experiences to enjoy. RETREAT: While an amenity-laden resort can be relaxing, maybe you want to keep it simple: waking up to the sounds of crashing waves just outside your door and feeling cool Caribbean breezes once you step outside. In this case, you want to explore one of St. Croix’s beachside villas or book a room at one of St. Croix’s well-known oceanfront resorts, Tamarind Reef Resort. Located on the island’s East End, guests of this resort can enjoy views of Buck Island and Green Cay from the shore and explore the vibrant offshore reef with the use of the resort’s complimentary snorkeling gear. LIVING THE DREAM I have had the opportunity to live on St. Croix for the past few months. During this time, I’ve fallen in love with this island as I scouted venues for photo shoots and destination weddings. St. Croix is graced with natural beauty, culture and history. On a clear day you can see St. Thomas, St. John and a few of the British Virgin Islands. The ocean breeze here is constant and welcoming on hot days, perfect for a ceremony that would take place outside. While living here, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the bride and groom, Drs. Loriann and Jay Laugle, two local chiropractors. Jay was born and raised on St. Croix, and he met his wife, Loriann, while they attended medical school in the U.S. mainland. Loriann is a native of Indiana. Their reception took place in the beautiful area of Judith’s Fancy, a lovely spot peppered with the ruins of 300-year-old Danish sugar mills. The rest of their special day was spent in historic downtown Frederiksted, where formal pictures were taken. One of the activities the bride and groom arranged for out-of-town guests was a day trip to various historic and unique places, which included a Cruzan Rum Distillery tour. St. Croix truly has so many gorgeous places for couples that are looking for something off the beaten path. With historic places of worship, centuries-old architecture, sprawling villas and glorious palm-lined beaches, the U.S. Virgin Islands is a welcoming paradise for those on a budget and for those seeking ultimate luxury.

Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, which is currently closed due to the hurricane, is another fantastic location for your wedding day.
