PHILIPSBURG The Dutch side’s capital, Philipsburg, offers historic ambience and plenty of places to shop. Shops line Front Street and Back Street, the main thoroughfares of St. Maarten. Many of the shops are housed in what were once dwellings. This island is the premiere place to get GIA-certified diamonds and gemstones, loose or mounted in a handcrafted setting. The store’s connection with the island started some four decades ago when two brothers, jewelers Mike and Peter Mirpuri, and their father Sam set out to offer clients quality items and exceptional service. St. Maarten–produced Dutch Blonde Ale brings home a coveted silver medal.

When Dutch Blonde Experiences and Caribbean Brewing Company founder Sunil Vaswani first thought about brewing up his own batch of beers, he was thinking about the flavor, feel and reception his products would receive on St. Maarten/St. Martin, where the market had grown accustomed to imported beers. Little did he know that he would one day bottle a prize-winning brew. Vaswani, along with master brewer B. Campbell, have crafted several unique brews, including Dutch Blonde Ale, which put the island on the world beer map by bringing home a silver medal from the international London Beer Competition in April 2021. The competition’s jury cited Dutch Blonde as “fruity and spicy with honey, orange and clove flavors — overall, very complex and refreshing.” More than 2,000 entries were submitted from the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. Medal winner Dutch

Blonde Ale was the top-ranking Caribbean entry and the first beer from St. Maarten to be lauded on a global platform. “Heineken still depicts the medals they won in the 1900s on every bottle,” says Vaswani. “Just as proudly, we will cherish Dutch Blonde Ale’s new badge of honor.” Dutch Blonde, he says, draws inspiration from the rich history of The Netherlands with just a touch of sweetness from the Caribbean. SXM Light is a refreshing, crisp light beer. Pirates Edition is a treasure chest of flavor brewed with pale malts, making it the island’s only IPA (India Pale Ale). The 1863 stout commemorates the year that slavery was abolished in the Dutch West Antilles. Caribbean Brewing Company in Pointe Blanche is open for tours. You’ll see state-of-the-art technology and learn how the beers are made. You can sample them with snacks in the taproom. Then be sure to stop by the souvenir store. In addition, the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar and restaurant, inside the windmill on the Boardwalk in Philipsburg, is a place to relax and enjoy all the beers, as well as specialty cocktails such as the “Naughty Blonde.” While you’re there, be sure to sample some authentic Dutch mini pancakes, or poffertjes. Adding a new dimension to the island’s entertainment scene, Dutch Blonde Beach Bar and restaurant will also be home to the island’s first escape rooms, a thrilling experience in which players in a locked room race against the clock to find clues that will free them. “Blackbeard’s Brig” (1716 A.D. pirate adventure) is the main attraction, connecting the themed room with the expanding St. Maarten export beer. Through this joint venture with Canadian specialists GameMasters, three other escape rooms are being developed at the same location.

s a result of the global pandemic, practically every person on this planet has had an opportunity to reevaluate his or her living conditions. Experiencing a social lockdown puts a lot of things into perspective. Homeowners and renters who have been in a position to upgrade or change their living conditions have been more motivated than ever to do something about it. One of the most noticeable real estate trends that emerged in the past year is the exodus from major cities to nearby suburbs. “Social distance is the new luxury” quickly became the most common phrase used by real estate agents in almost every market. Some real estate markets have exploded in the past year, with homes being sold via bidding wars as soon as they are listed. In some cases, homes have been sold to buyers who never even stepped inside them beforehand! While there might be a few isolated incidents of this happening in St. Maarten/St. Martin, the island has not had this level of extreme sales activity, at least

not yet. That said, the island’s real estate market continues to thrive, and there has been a growing buzz and excitement within this sector. St. Maarten/St. Martin was in lockdown for several months in 2020. The real estate market was one of the first sectors of the economy to start rolling as soon as free movement was allowed again. The immediate wave of real estate activity post-lockdown came primarily from full-time residents who were eager to improve their living spaces. This included long-term rentals and residential sales. As the end of 2020 rolled around, a wave of American buyers started to show up on the island’s shores, which helped make 2021 one of the most productive years in recent decades for the local real estate market. There is no sign of slowing down; if anything, the wave of activity is expected to intensify in 2022 with direct flights from Canada resuming. St. Maarten/St. Martin’s real estate market has always had strong appeal for international buyers looking to own a vacation property in paradise. In

2013, the former president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, purchased an 11-bedroom beachfront estate on the French side. Love him or hate him, Trump is someone who attracts media attention wherever he goes. When he listed his property for sale, the international media took notice. The exposure of such a highprofile listing on the island has helped shine a global spotlight on the luxury segment of the local real estate market and has added even more credibility to the allure of owning property on this island. There are no restrictions against foreigners owning property in St. Maarten/ St. Martin, and the easy accessibility from many major cities in the United States, Canada and Europe has helped to make this island a preferred destination for second home buyers. Both sides of the island have a wide variety of real estate offerings, with pricing starting at around US$100,000 and going up into multimillion-dollar figures. Several property owners have established a solid track record of income from the vacation rental market. This is often a great way to offset carrying costs and maintenance fees. For some, this approach has even turned into a lucrative business. On the Dutch side, there are no annual real estate taxes (rental income is subject to tax) and no capital gains taxes when the property is sold. On both sides of the island, transfer of ownership is executed via a civil law notary who serves as a neutral party between buyer and seller and essentially guarantees a free and clear title. Overall, the process of buying and selling
