Raju Budhrani: The Heart of a Jeweler THE STORY OF ORO DIAMANTÉ spans decades and continents, but at its heart is a St. Maarten/St. Martin-based family business headed by a jeweler with much heart, Raju Budhrani. In 1972, Raju’s father, Mohandas G. Budhrani (Mike, as friends and clients knew him), undertook a journey that would change the course of his family’s history. He made the bold decision to migrate to Puerto Rico from India and open a business. Over a short time, he grew his business from one retail store to three. In 1983, the family business took another step when Mike sent his oldest son (Raju’s older brother) to survey the business climate in St. Maarten, and soon enough, the family expanded and opened a location on The Friendly Island. Three years later, Raju joined the family enterprise. “Those initial years were a time of learning and understanding the jewelry business and its various nuances from the ground up,” Raju shares. The early 1990s brought with them both challenges and life-altering decisions. A downturn in business 38 Visit St. Maarten / St. Martin 2024

in Puerto Rico and health concerns prompted the Budhrani patriarch to close the business there and make St. Maarten a permanent home. By this time, Mike’s youngest son had also joined the family business, and the operation had expanded to three stores on the island. Years passed, and Mike decided to entrust each of his sons with a share of the business to run independently. “It was a defining moment that would shape our future. Armed with the values and principles instilled by our father, I began the journey of running my own part of the family business and named it Oro Diamanté (Gold and Diamonds in Italian and Spanish),” Raju says. Oro Diamanté has grown to offer clients exotic and hard-to-find gemstones certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). “We’ve come to specialize in these unique gems, from Paraiba tourmaline to Padparadscha sapphires and even natural color-changing gems like alexandrite,” he says. In recent years, the jewelry industry has seen the rise of lab-created diamonds and gemstones. How-

Let me tell you a story that’s like mixing Indian spices in the Caribbean sun – a bit of a geographical mishmash! Picture this: a dude, born and bred in India, lands smack dab in sunny Sint Maarten. How’d I get there? Long story short, what was meant to be a chill vacation turned into my crash course on island life. So, here I was, 17, basking in the Caribbean rays, and guess what? I fell head over heels for all things Dutch! Totally unexpected, right? Now, helping my uncle, who was already a big shot with a bunch of jewelry stores on the island, was where my journey began. I got sucked into the world of glitz and glam—sparkling rocks, shiny watches—the whole nine yards! And then a light bulb moment struck! A tiny spot at Princess Juliana International Airport screamed, “Hey, set up shop here!” That’s when I decided to take a leap, backed by my dad’s wisdom and expertise. Speaking of dad, he used to call his mom “ama.” Now, wanting her blessings for this adventure was a nobrainer. It felt right to honor my grandma, so guess what the store’s called? You got it! On a shiny September 1st in 1986, AMA was born, and boy, did we hit the ground running! Dad’s business mojo and values were the wind beneath our wings. AMA soared, spreading its sparkle to more spots around the island. But, life’s a rollercoaster, right? 1993 hit hard when we lost my dad. It was gutwrenching, but I vowed to keep his legacy alive – honest dealings and genuine values. Turns out, those values became the secret sauce! Our customers became more like pals, coming back for more bling and watches, some even after 30 years! Can you believe it?

Now, about AMAsterdam – brace yourself, this one’s a kicker! You see, Sint Maarten is all about half Dutch vibes, but everything around screamed Caribbean or American. There was this glaring Dutch-shaped hole that needed filling. Lightbulb moment number two! “Let’s call it AMAsterdam!” I proclaimed. Seemed fitting, right? So, off I went on my trips to the Netherlands, collecting Dutch goodies left, right, and center. Picture this: an actual 1914 tram, straight from the heart of Amsterdam, sitting pretty in Sint Maarten! It was like I caught a bit of that Dutch magic and brought it home. And that’s when the brainstorming began. Why not bring a slice of the Netherlands to the Caribbean? Enter AMAsterdam – where Dutch treats meet island vibes. It’s a treasure trove of cool stuff: tees, souvenirs, booze (yeah, you read that right), Cuban cigars, Dutch cheese that’ll make you weep with joy, chocolates that’ll melt your heart, and Delft Blue porcelain that’s just fancy. But wait, the best part? We kept our jewelry and watches game strong! AMAsterdam’s a work-in-progress, but hey, we’ve got a stash of whiskies, cognacs, spirits, cigars, and even shishas to keep you entertained while we spruce things up. Jonathan Schaede has a love for island life, food, and languages. His passion, however, is real estate. By Alita Singh SCHAEDE IS THE HEAD REALTOR at Sunshine Properties in St. Maarten/St. Martin. He stepped into this three-plus-decade-old family business 17 years ago. “I grew up in the real estate business,” he says. “I started young, and living here helps me know the market.” Sunshine Properties is more than the buying and selling of immovable property. Schaede explains, “We are a one-stop shop. We build homes and are involved with several high-end developments on the island.” This, as
