wWhen those aboard the ill-fated Sea Venture shipwrecked amid Bermuda’s rocky shores in 1609, they found safety on the island’s most eastern point, now known as St. George’s. Fast forward, and luckily for those who find their way upon these shores today, the town has prospered and offers a glimpse of that storied past.
While more than 400 years have passed since that fateful shipwreck, much of the town of St. George’s, which was the island’s original capital before that title was bestowed upon the City of Hamilton in 1815, continues to highlight its historical treasures, being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The town showcases its beginnings as an English colonial village with its fine examples of early architecture, winding lanes with uniquely Bermudian names, and museums full of historical stories, all whilst maintaining its importance as a living and working town.
Throughout the year, St. George’s plays host to several events that help bring the town to life and make visiting a must-do. In
The town showcases its beginnings as an English colonial village with its fine examples of early architecture, winding lanes with uniquely Bermudian names, and museums full of historical stories.
May, the annual Peppercorn Ceremony sees King’s Square full of pomp and circumstance at this uniquely Bermudian event where the Masonic Lodge of St. George’s pays its annual dues of one peppercorn to the town. For a thrilling atmosphere, head to one of the three Eastern Counties Cup Association Annual Classic cricket games held in July, August, and September, and get a taste of the local competitive spirit and the island’s
summer vibes. At the end of summer, feast on locally caught fish and seafood at the St. George’s Seafood Festival, which brings together the island’s talented chefs delivering delicious Bermudian-inspired cuisine. This annual event featuring Bermuda’s rich seafood culture will take place on Sunday, September 15, 2024. In the winter, celebrate the season at the Bermuda National Trust’s annual Christmas Walkabout, which takes place the first Friday in December. The town is aglow with the sights and sounds of festive lights, holiday entertainment, and historic homes decorated and opened to the public.
But on any given day, the town is a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, and activities as well as exploration of its fabled attractions.

A Walk through History
The best way to explore the Town of St. George’s is by foot or electric bike. With such a large collection of historic sites in just a small area, a half-day is enough to get a sense of the history of the town. However, plan to spend a full day if you want to go a little further afield or plan to visit any of the museums.
Start your walking tour at Ordnance Island, where you’ll be greeted by the statue of Sir George Somers, for whom the town owes its name and its settlement, as his welcoming arms usher visitors into the town. This is also the location of the grim reenactments featuring the stocks and pillory and the ducking stool, used as tools of cruel punishment that have thankfully been left in the past. On a brighter note, Bob Burns Park offers a lovely spot to relax and watch the comings and goings across St. George’s Harbour. After enjoying the nautical sights, head north across the bridge to King’s Square. This is the heart of the town, with many events taking place here. The 18th-century St. George’s Town Hall presides over the

Square and, along with municipal meetings, it is open to the public during the week and includes a small exhibit. Heading east behind the Town Hall are several of St. George’s oldest buildings, including imposing Buckingham, beautifully understated Bridge House, and the island’s first stone building and first iteration of the island’s House of Assembly, the State House. All three buildings boast unique Bermuda architecture that is worth seeing. Walking along Bridge Street, head north towards Somers’ Garden, a green respite in the middle of the town, which also features one of the island’s iconic moongates, making for an excellent photo op. Walking along the western edge of the park, head up the hill to the striking edifice of the Unfinished Church, which was abandoned mid-construction in the 1800s. Head back down the hill and turn west on to Featherbed Alley and reach the back of St Peter’s, Their Majesties Chapell, where you can wander through the graveyard and reflect on the fact that a section was segregated for blacks, casting a sobering reminder of the island’s darker past. Within the whitewashed walls and wood beamed interior of the oldest surviving Anglican church in continuous use in the new world, you will find the original altar as well as artefacts such as an 18th-century throne salvaged from a shipwreck and com-
munion silver from the 1600s. Across from the church, you’ll find the Globe Museum, which currently houses the Bermuda National Trust (BNT). The museum highlights the evolution of the town as well as Bermuda’s involvement in the American Civil War. Between the BNT and the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Visitor Services Centre, located just steps away on Duke of York Street, you can plan the rest of your day in St. George’s. Whilst there, chat with their helpful staff, who can provide insider knowledge about the town. Buy tickets for local tours, bus and ferry tickets and passes, and Bermuda-branded merchandise. Scan the QR code on the poster found inside the Visitor Services Centre to view the digital Town of St. George Guide, as well as their Maps of Bermuda Guide, to help you navigate the area with ease.
Getting to St. George’s

Out and About
Once you’ve made yourself familiar with the town, discover adventures awaiting both on land and by water. There are electric bike tours of the town and further afield that make the rest of the parish more accessible. Another perk to exploring by electric bikes include traversing the East End tracks of the disused former Bermuda Railway line, which have been repurposed as walking and biking trails (www.bermudarailway.net/ trail/taking-trail/). Both Ferry Reach and the Bailey’s Bay tracks are accessible by bike from the town. St. George’s Harbour is the perfect place to spend some time on the water whether by boat or, for a slower pace, paddling along in a kayak.
Rental boats and pontoons or paddleboards and kayaks can be rented or book a tour on a Jet Ski or a boat with a licensed captain to get the inside scoop on hidden gems and local favourites.
Several beaches are within walking distance to the centre of town. Tobacco Bay is one of the best snorkelling spots on the island. It offers tranquil turquoise waters, stunning limestone rock formations, and Photo courtesy
incredible reefs that house a wide variety of sea life.
Across St. George’s Harbour sits St. David’s Battery. While the area is mostly residential, at the furthest point of land sits Cooper’s Island. This is also an excellent location to cycle to and then spend time discovering the island’s coast-
al natural environment, and the observation tower is the perfect lookout to spot humpback whales migrating past in March and April.
For the golf enthusiast, there are several courses within close proximity to the town, including the Five Forts Golf Club at The St. Regis Bermuda Resort.

AROMATIC CHARMS
STEP INTO THE ENCHANTING WORLD OF THE LILI BERMUDA PERFUMERY, WHERE FRAGRANT BLOOMS AND ISLAND-INSPIRED SCENTS ARE METICULOUSLY CRAFTED INTO TIMELESS FRAGRANCES.
FOR ALMOST 100 YEARS,
the island’s scents have been captured in a luxury collection of fragrances.
In the current iteration of the timehonoured perfume business, The Lili Bermuda Perfumery has refined each scent and created a sensory experience that epitomises the beauty of Bermuda.
From fresh ocean spray to spring florals, these bottled delights are a gorgeous way to take back a unique memory of time spent on the island.
While The Lili Bermuda Perfumery was founded in 1928, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone
has been its master perfumer for over 20 years. It is located at Stewart Hall, an 18thcentury Bermuda National Trust mansion on Queen Street in St. George’s. There, visitors can tour the Perfumery, see where the perfumes are hand-crafted, and sample their many fragrances.
The Perfumery recently began offering fragrance workshops for aficionados to learn how to create a customised fragrance. At the 90-minute Fragrance Making Workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of the art form of making perfume, including learning how to expertly blend natural
essential oils and specialty aromas and leave with a personalised 50ml fragrance.
“Most people have never created perfume before, and we’ve set up the workshop by selecting some of the most popular essential oils,” explains Ramsay-Brackstone.
Scents ranging from citrus, spice, aromatics, fruits, floral, woody, musk, and ambers have been curated to create the basis of a signature fragrance. Participants spend time learning the basics of perfumemaking and smelling many aromas to build a truly personal blend.
Ramsay-Brackstone compares perfumemaking to mixing colours — taking different scents and blending them to make one unique creation.
While it can take Ramsay-Brackstone months to create one of Lili Bermuda’s signature fragrances, she has created bases from a family of scents as a starting point for the workshop. “The magic of our workshops is that we basically have written 80 percent of the song for you, so you can accent it how you like; but it will still have a beginning, middle, and an end. Everyone can have fun and leave with something that smells really good.”
Ramsay-Brackstone is often asked how she knows when a fragrance is ready; she says it’s like “falling in love.”
“When you know, you know — you just can’t explain the way a certain smell makes you feel. It makes the workshop very intimate because it’s your very own creation. It’s very special.”

JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
EXPLORE THE RICH HISTORY OF ST. GEORGE’S, WHERE CENTURIESOLD FORTS STAND AS GUARDIANS OF THE PAST, OFFERING GLIMPSES INTO THE ISLAND’S STRATEGIC SIGNIFICANCE AND STORIED COLONIAL HERITAGE.
As one of Bermuda’s main gateways, St. George’s and its surrounding islands became an ideal spot to build fortifications to protect the town and the island from unwanted military advances. While some, like Fort St. Catherine, remain in wellmaintained condition, others are no more than ruins. However, they still offer exploration and remain an exciting glimpse into Bermuda’s defensive past.
FORT ST. CATHERINE
Originally built in 1614 and continually expanded over its years of use, this is one of the island’s most prominent and significant forts. Housed within the fort is a museum showcasing Bermuda history, specifically focusing on military history. Outside, along with large cannons and rifles, visitors will be rewarded with stunning vistas off Bermuda’s north shore.
ALEXANDRA BATTERY
Like many fortifications dotting the island’s eastern end, Alexandra Battery is mainly enjoyed by viewing its exterior and appreciating the views from atop the hill nearby or relaxing on the small beach below. Initially built in the 1860s on the site of Buildings Bay Fort, it saw active duty up until the 1920s. Military enthusiasts will find the pedestal-mounted breech-loading guns fascinating.
GATES FORT
Just south of Alexandra Battery, sitting on the edge of the Town Cut — the small channel that feeds into St. George’s Harbour — Gates Fort is small but offers beautiful views of the northern coastline and into St. George’s. It is especially spectacular if you catch a cruise ship or other large vessel navigating through this narrow waterway.
ST. DAVID’S BATTERY
On the southern side of the parish, outside the main town, sits St. David’s Battery atop Great Head Park. This is one of the last gun batteries built by the British military in the early 1900s and is spectacular for the views it affords across St. George’s Harbour, South Shore, and Castle Harbour, as well as coastal walking paths. There are still gun emplacements and a sobering memorial to those lost at sea.
FORT VICTORIA & FORT ALBERT
Fort Albert was initially completed in 1843 to complement and support Fort Victoria and was named after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. Almost all the stone used to build Fort Albert was quarried at the site by creating a moat surrounding the fort. The fort was renovated between 1865 and 1876 but was abandoned by the early 1900s. It was later turned into a hotel nightclub but closed in 1989 after the closing of Club Med. Recently, The St. George’s Foundation and volunteers have been working to restore both forts.
