TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND DISCOVER SOME OF THE MUST-SEE ART DECO LANDMARKS.
By Vanessa Molina Santamaria
MIAMI BEACH
IS SYNONYMOUS WITH STUNNING BEACHES, SIZZLING NIGHTLIFE, AND, PERHAPS MOST NOTABLY, ITS WORLD-RENOWNED ART DECO ARCHITECTURE. THIS ICONIC STYLE, CHARACTERIZED BY BOLD GEOMETRIC PATTERNS, PASTEL COLORS, AND LAVISH ORNAMENTATION, HAS LEFT AN INDELIBLE MARK ON THE CITYSCAPE, TRANSFORMING MIAMI BEACH INTO AN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM OF 20TH-CENTURY DESIGN.
HISTORY OF ART DECO
The Art Deco movement, which began in France in the 1920s, found its way to Miami Beach during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Following the devastating hurricane of 1926, Miami Beach was in need of revitalization. Architects seized this opportunity to embrace the modernity of Art Deco, creating buildings that not only were aesthetically pleasing but also symbolized the city’s resilience and rebirth.
What makes Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District unique is its concentration of over 800 preserved buildings, more than any other city in the world. It’s no wonder that it’s been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. These structures, often referred to as “Streamline Moderne,” feature nautical elements such as porthole windows, sleek curves, and horizontal lines that evoke the glamour of ocean liners, reflecting the city’s connection to the sea.
AN ICON OF MIAMI FOR SHOPPING, DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT
As you stroll through Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District — between 5th Street and 23rd Street, along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue — you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by the architectural brilliance that defines the city. Here are just a few of the mustsee landmarks that capture the essence of this vibrant era.
DELANO SOUTH BEACH
Located at 1685 Collins Avenue, the Delano hotel is a masterpiece of minimalist Art Deco design. Originally built in 1947, the Delano’s striking white exterior, set against the backdrop of the turquoise ocean, epitomizes the sleek elegance of the period. Today, it stands as a luxurious boutique hotel, offering visitors a taste of Miami Beach’s glamorous past.
COLONY HOTEL
Standing proudly at 736 Ocean Drive, the Colony Hotel is one of the most photographed buildings in Miami Beach. Opened in 1935, its neon blue sign and striped awnings make it an iconic symbol of the Art Deco era. The Colony’s quaint charm and prime location on Ocean Drive make it a favorite among visitors and a must-stop on any Art Deco tour.
HOTEL BREAKWATER
Just a few steps away from the Colony, at 940 Ocean Drive, lies the Breakwater. This stunning structure, built in 1939, is instantly recognizable by its central spire and vibrant blue neon lighting. The Breakwater’s symmetrical design and vertical lines are classic examples of Art Deco style, and its lively ground-floor café is the perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere of Ocean Drive.
THE ART DECO MOVEMENT, WHICH BEGAN IN FRANCE IN THE 1920S, found its way to Miami Beach DURING THE LATE 1930S AND EARLY 1940S.
CLEVELANDER SOUTH BEACH
Known for its pool parties and lively nightlife, the Clevelander at 1020 Ocean Drive is much more than just a hotel. Built in 1938, the Clevelander is famous for its lively atmosphere and iconic curved façade. Today, it remains a social hub, attracting visitors who want to experience both the architectural beauty and the electric energy of the district.
THE CARLYLE
Featured in several movies, including the 1996 film The Birdcage, The Carlyle is an iconic Art Deco gem with its unique corner location, pastel colors, and sleek design. Built in 1941, it’s located at 1250 Ocean Drive.
THE AVALON HOTEL
Located at 700 Ocean Drive, The Avalon Hotel is famous for its classic 1950s car parked out front and its beautifully preserved Art Deco architecture, making it a popular spot for photos. Designed by world-renowned architect Albert Anis, its storied history dates back to 1941.
THE TIDES SOUTH BEACH
Known for being the tallest Art Deco hotel on Ocean Drive, The Tides was built in 1936 and is located at 1220 Ocean Drive. Its towering façade and elegant design make it a must-see.
BASS MUSEUM OF ART
For those seeking a cultural experience, the Bass Museum of Art, located at 2100 Collins Avenue, offers a fascinating blend of contemporary art and historical architecture. Originally built as a library in 1930, the museum’s Art Deco façade is a work of art, featuring intricate bas-relief carvings that depict scenes from Florida’s history. The Bass provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate both modern and historical art within an Art Deco setting.
LINCOLN ROAD
No visit to Miami Beach would be complete without a stroll down Lincoln Road, a pedestrian promenade that is both a shopping destination and an architectural treasure trove. Designed by Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, Lincoln Road
Lincoln Theater
is lined with Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern buildings, as well as outdoor cafés, boutiques, and galleries. It’s the perfect place to explore Miami Beach’s vibrant art and design scene while indulging in some retail therapy.
Don’t miss The Lincoln Theatre, located at 541 Lincoln Road. Originally a cinema, it now serves as a retail space but retains its Art Deco charm with its curved façade and decorative detailing.
These buildings are just a glimpse of the vast array of Art Deco architecture that defines Miami Beach. Exploring these sites gives you a chance to step back in time and experience the glamour and elegance of the early 20th century. Whether you’re admiring the sleek lines of the Delano, capturing a photo in front of the Colony’s neon sign, or enjoying an art exhibit at the Bass, you’ll find that every building tells a story.
Did you know?
Visitors can explore Art Deco architecture by joining one of the daily walking tours organized by the Miami Design Preservation League. These tours, lasting up to two hours, offer an overview of the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles featured in the district’s historic hotels, restaurants, and other landmarks. The League also operates the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center, where guests can learn more about Art Deco’s signature design elements, such as symmetry, glass blocks, neon lights, curved edges, round porthole windows, terrazzo flooring, and more. MIAMI HEAT’S COUTURE QUEEN HAS QUICKLY BECOME PART OF THE CITY’S CULTURAL FABRIC.
By Shayne Benowitz
IIf you’ve attended a Miami Heat basketball game in recent years — or cheered from home — you may have noticed a courtside standout: Radmila Lolly in one of her custom Jersey Gowns or a unique piece from her fashion house, Eltara Casata by Radmila Lolly. Blending her passion for fashion with her musical background, Lolly has also performed the National Anthem for the Heat, seamlessly
merging her talents as an opera singer, fashion designer, and composer.
After moving to Miami from New York in 2019, Lolly’s partner, John Utendahl, suggested they get season tickets for the Miami Heat, as it’s a key part of Miami’s culture. He reached out to his friend and former Miami Heat player Shane Battier to see if tickets were available, and soon Lolly
Jorge Ramirez
and Utendahl began attending games regularly. It didn’t take long for Lolly to fall in love with the team. In 2022, she went viral at an Eastern Conference semifinals game wearing a striking custom red strapless gown that she made from Heat jerseys — and the rest is history.
Since then, Lolly has officially collaborated with the Heat and launched two collections. She even performed her song “Magic City” during halftime. “I love the energy of the arena. I love the excitement. I love people cheering,” she says. “I wish people could express themselves that way with the classical arts.”
Since moving to Miami, Lolly has fully embraced the city’s performing arts scene, drawing on her background in opera, which includes releasing two albums at Carnegie Hall. She is currently on the board of Florida Grand Opera and Shalala MusicReach, which allows Frost Musicians from the University of Miami to teach and develop community engagement skills for disadvantaged youth in Miami-Dade County. You will also find a collection she curated for the Hurricane Team Store at the University of Miami.
We caught up with this multifaceted mover and shaker to learn more about how she experiences the Magic City.
What are your favorite Miami venues for live music?
I love the Arsht Center, where I’m the chair of the Green Room Society. They always have touring Broadway musicals. I love the Nu Deco Ensemble, which performed there recently. The calendar is always filled with great performances. And, of course, the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat. I’ve seen Madonna and J.Lo, and I’m going to see Usher there in December.
Can you share your must-visit local boutique?
I love The Bazaar Project in Coconut Grove. It’s such a cute little store for nice jewelry, cute objects for the home, unique books, bikinis… I love it! There are also so many great finds and local shops in the nearby CocoWalk area.
What are some of your favorite restaurants?
I am a creature of habit. I like to sit at the same table and typically order the same thing. I recently joined The Club at
"Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is truly a mustsee attraction. There’s so much history — the architecture and European-inspired gardens remind me of France or Italy. "
The Moore in the Design District. I also like ZZ’s Club over there and Bellini at Mr. C Hotel in Coconut Grove. I’m vegan, so I like to order the endive salad and side vegetables. These restaurants are very accommodating, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or pescatarian. The chefs are highly flexible and willing to tailor dishes to meet your needs.
Any tips for vegan and vegetarian travelers?
You have to go to PLANTA in South Beach. I do a lot of takeout from there.
Where do you go for nightlife?
Socialista, the lounge beneath Cipriani on Brickell. They’re my family; I have known the owners since I was 19, and it was my go-to spot back in New York.
What’s a favorite off-the-beaten-path hidden gem?
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is truly a must-see attraction. There’s so much history — the architecture and Europeaninspired gardens remind me of France or Italy. It’s just so beautiful, and I’ve also performed there. There’s also a new Lucky Strike bowling alley right across from the arena. It has an arcade, and it’s so nice and clean and new. A brand-new Serafina is opening there, too. My friend is the owner, so I will be going there a lot.
What outdoor activity do you enjoy?
I love playing tennis. I picked it up when I moved here. I also love walking on Brickell Key on beautiful Biscayne Bay. Where I live in Coconut Grove, the bay is right in front of us. From my view, I can see South of Fifth in South Beach, Downtown Miami, and Brickell. I enjoy watching the boats, especially the sailboats, on the weekends when people are taking them out; it’s so peaceful and pretty.

THE SPIRIT OF MIAMI™: Miami Club Rum™
Miami, a city synonymous with vibrant art, culture, and rich musical traditions, has long been an incubator for creativity and innovation. Yet, few know of the city’s rum heritage, brought to life by one passionate entrepreneur — Matt Malone, founder of Miami Club Rum™. This brand isn’t just about producing world-class rum; it’s about crafting a spirit that embodies the essence of Miami itself or, as Malone calls it, “The Spirit of Miami™.”
A LEGACY ROOTED IN TRADITION
Malone’s journey to becoming Miami’s first distiller began with a rich family history in rum production. Originating over a century ago in Puerto Rico, Malone’s family by marriage cultivated a deep understanding and appreciation for the art of crafting rum, passing down this legacy through generations. For Malone, producing rum wasn’t merely a business — it was a generational opportunity to contribute to a family tradition and an art form steeped in heritage. In 2011, he set out to honor this legacy by founding Miami Club Rum, the first (legal) distillery in Miami’s history.
Originally Located in the heart of Wynwood, Miami Club Rum’s mission echoes Malone’s passion and commitment to this ideal: “To craft and to cultivate premium liquor brands and complementary lifestyle products that enrich modern culture, inspire genuine connections, and reflect the highest standards of quality.”
THE MAGIC OF MIAMI CLUB RUM: INFUSED WITH MUSIC™
One of the most unique aspects of Miami Club Rum is the infusion of music into the distilling process. Malone, a lover of music, was captivated by the rhythms and textures of Miami’s rich Latin and Caribbean music scenes when he first moved to the city in 2000. From salsa and merengue to samba, the sounds of South Florida became an integral part of his vision for Miami Club Rum.
To bring this to life, Malone decided to incorporate music directly into the production of his rum. As the rum is produced and aged in barrels, it’s continuously serenaded by a playlist of Latin and Caribbean sounds, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind aging process. Vibrations from these lively genres gently agitate the rum in its barrels, potentially impacting the spirit’s texture and character. It’s a process that connects the product to Miami’s cultural fabric in a way that’s both innovative and deeply meaningful.
PREMIUM QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Miami Club Rum is not only distinctive for its infusion with music; it’s also renowned for its dedication to quality. Each of the brand’s five unique products (Miami Club Rum™, Miami Club Anejo Especial, Miami Club Cuban Coffee Liqueur™, Miami Club Café Con Leche™, and Miami Club Coconut Grove™) is handmade, using locally sourced ingredients.
The attention to detail in each step of the process has paid off in the form of global recognition. Miami Club Rum has won 11 worldwide competitions, including prestigious awards like Best Rum in the World twice at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as Double-Gold medals in Los Angeles, New York, and London. These accolades are a testament to the superior quality and authenticity of Miami Club Rum and the skill that goes into each bottle.
THE MIAMI CLUB RUM COLLECTION: QUINTESSENTIALLY MIAMI
Each product in the Miami Club Rum collection is crafted to be quintessentially Miami, reflecting the city’s diversity, energy, and sense of community. By building upon quintessentially Miami themes like rum, Cuban coffee, café con leche, and coconuts from coconut grove, and infusing the rum with vibrant music, Malone ensures that each bottle captures the Spirit of Miami in a way that’s both authentic and memorable. (And get ready for their new Florida Mango release in early 2025!)
These offerings allow consumers to enjoy a taste of Miami in every sip, whether they’re locals or simply fans of the city’s unmistakable energy. Malone’s vision extends beyond just selling spirits; he aims to deliver an experience — a journey into the heart of Miami with every pour.

Greater Miami is a rich mosaic of neighborhoods, cultures, and stories that extend far beyond the glitz and glamour of Ocean Drive. Join us as we explore seven spellbinding spots that offer a glimpse into the true heart of Miami, guided by the lens of local history.
CORAL CASTLE
Ed Leedskalnin, a Latvian immigrant, spent many years in the 1920s and 1930s chiseling and sculpting oolitic limestone into a home and garden sculptures in Longview, a tiny community in south Miami-Dade County.
Known as Coral Castle, the project consisted of a house comprised of oolitic rock equipped with oversized rock furnishings, including massive chairs weighing from 700 to 1,500 pounds, a 3,000-pound couch, tables, beds, and rocking chairs.
The project was apparently an effort by the lovestruck Leedskalnin to win back his fiancée, who had earlier left him. Leedskalnin worked in secrecy. His methods of employing pulleys and levers for sculpting the rock were considered ingenious. In the late 1930s, he moved the Coral Castle by himself to Homestead. The move itself is also considered an astounding feat. www.coralcastle.com

VENETIAN POOL
Coral Gables’ gorgeous Venetian Pool was initially a rock quarry. In 1924, George Merrick, creator of this beautiful Mediterranean-styled community, turned to his uncle, Denman Fink, to transform the quarry into a beautiful Mediterranean-inspired pool with Venetian-styled elements.
Fink’s masterpiece was ready a year later. It features Venetian striped poles, humpback bridges, majestic waterfalls, and even “caves” to explore. In its inaugural year, the pool hosted William Jennings Bryan, a statesman and eloquent speaker, who pitched Merrick’s real estate to prospective buyers. Later, it hosted 1920s-era bands, American swimmer and actress Esther Williams, and the public. www.coralgables.com/attractions/venetian-pool
BARNACLE HISTORIC STATE PARK
Ralph Munroe was “a man for all seasons,” who built, in phases, Coconut Grove’s Barnacle — so named for the small marine crustacean with an external shell that attaches itself permanently to a variety of surfaces. Munroe, a New Yorker, adopted Coconut Grove as his permanent home in the 1880s. Initially, he worked and lived in a boat house at the edge of a five-acre tract of high ground highlighted by a thick subtropical hammock. After marrying Jesse Wirth, Munroe built the one-story Barnacle in 1891. In 1908, as the
Munroe family expanded, he raised the home and built a new first floor under it. Four years later, Munroe added a library room. Many elements of the Barnacle are comprised of wood and other items from shipwrecks. In 1973, the State of Florida purchased the property, thereby preserving the nonpareil hammock and home, considered the oldest domicile on its original site in Miami-Dade County. www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/barnaclehistoric-state-park

VILLA VIZCAYA
Located in the City of Miami and county owned since 1952, Villa Vizcaya offers — along with its great palazzo — 10 acres of sculptured gardens and stunning views of Biscayne Bay. It is the most stunning home in vast, sprawling Miami-Dade County. Inspired by two centuriesold homes in Italy, Vizcaya was constructed between 1914 and 1916 on a bluff by James Deering, a Gilded Age prince from his role as a top official of the family’s International Harvester, the world’s largest manufacturer of farm equipment.
Hailing from many parts of Europe and elsewhere, the stunning furnishings across 34 rooms reach back centuries and are characterized by a wide variety of styles and points of origin. The same is true for the lush gardens. www.vizcaya.org
FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN
Colonel Robert Montgomery, a federal tax authority and avocational horticulturalist, owned a large swath of land along South Dade’s Old Cutler Road. He was also a devoted follower of Dr. David Fairchild, a world-renowned horticulturalist who adopted Miami as his home. In 1938, Montgomery decided to create a garden with plants selected by Fairchild.
Montgomery selected an 83-acre site near his home for the garden. The landscape design, created by noted landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, features 11 lakes, winding paths, and two important vistas with plants grouped in informal, flowing patterns. The garden consists of a vast array of palms, cycads, flowering trees, shrubs, and vines. The garden also contains a mangrove thicket stretching to Biscayne Bay.
County-owned Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden offers many events and activities, including its annual mango festival. www.fairchildgarden.org

DEERING ESTATE
Charles Deering, a cultured collector of great artwork, one-time chairman of the board of International Harvester, half-brother of James Deering, and a Naval officer, completed work on a grand Mediterranean-styled home in today’s deep south Miami-Dade County in 1922. The three-story home, designed by Coral Gables architect Phineas Paist, sits on a ridge overlooking Biscayne Bay amid a large, lush tropical hardwood hammock. Building materials used in its construction included oolitic limestone for the walls and barrel tiles made by Cuban artisans for the roof. Deering lived there until his death in 1927. The home, which doubled as an unofficial art museum for Deering’s vast collection, is attached to the Richmond Cottage, which
Deering purchased and restored and used primarily as a dining room. Nearby is a burial site for Paleo-Indians dating back more than 10,000 years ago, representing one of the earliest archaeological sites in North America. Owned by the State of Florida, the home is managed by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department.

CALLE OCHO AT SW 15TH AVENUE
Miami’s Little Havana is one of the area’s hottest tourist attractions, and Calle Ocho (Eighth Street) and Southwest 15th Avenue is “ground zero” for visitors, for here resides the venerable Domino Park, a draw for residents and tourists alike for six decades. It’s exciting to watch the regulars playing dominoes, sipping cafecito (Cuban coffee), and chatting with friends. Nearby, you’ll also find the Tower Theater, opened in 1926 during the Silent Screen era; the fabled Ball & Chain bar and music hall, which traces its beginnings to 1934; and the new kid on the block, Azucar Ice Cream Company, with its outsized artisanal ice cream cones welcoming customers and whose ice cream flavors are inspired by its bountiful tropical fruit offerings and Latin flavors. Bracketing these landmarks are hand-rolled cigar factories and stores, art galleries, other bars with live music, and restaurants serving outsized heapings of delicious Cuban food. www.miamiandbeaches.com/neighborhoods/little-havana

GREATER MIAMI AND MIAMI BEACH’S MANY NEIGHBORHOODS ARE AN INVITATION TO DISCOVER THE UNEXPECTED IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST DYNAMIC DESTINATIONS.
By Lisa Simundson
It all started with a few idealists who envisioned a glittering city by the ocean. Where others saw a jungle of sawgrass and wetlands, pioneers like Julia Tuttle, George Merrick, and Carl Fisher saw potential, pushing the tiny settlement on Biscayne Bay into the spotlight, where it has remained ever since.
I
Growing, developing, changing, welcoming, Miami through the years has made a stunning transformation, from a seasonal getaway for snowbirds to an international hub for business and technology, manufacturing, trade, and — as always — tourism.
While many associate Miami with the beach, there are fascinating towns and neighborhoods stretching from Aventura in the north to Homestead in the south, each with its own exciting discoveries.
Let’s take a tour around some of the vibrant areas that make up Greater Miami and Miami Beach.
MIAMI BEACH
When automotive entrepreneur Carl Fisher built the first bridge to Miami Beach, he had no idea that it would turn into the resort destination it is today, coveted by celebrities and glitterati who seek out its lavish oceanfront hotels, posh shops, restaurants, and clubs known around the world, including Nikki Beach and the original Mango’s Tropical Cafe. Yet vintage Miami Beach is everywhere here, including South Beach’s Art Deco District — whose charming, pastelcolored hotels line Ocean Drive — housing the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. In fact,
hundreds of hotels, apartments, and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943, including Mediterranean and Streamline Moderne, are all represented in the District.
South Beach’s Española Way was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style, modeled after San Sebastian on the coast of Spain and Cannes in France, and today is loved for its unique restaurants, boutiques, hotels, and late-night salsa dancing.
While Ocean Drive offers great beach and Art Deco selfie and Insta spots, a couple of blocks west, Washington Avenue is popular for its bars, nightclubs, and unique shops but its also renowned as being the home of the 5th Street Gym, where future world champion boxer Muhammad Ali honed his skills. But Washington Street’s fame doesn’t end there: The singer Prince once had a club here, and the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater sits on the street’s northern end.
Heading to Lincoln Road — the northern boundary of the Art Deco District — this pedestrian promenade is still the glamorous shopping destination it always was yet today offers sidewalk cafés, galleries, bars, and live entertainment while
also being home to one of the area’s most esteemed cultural venues, the Deco-style Colony Theatre.
History and culture also live on at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, the only museum dedicated to telling the story of more than 250 years of Florida Jewish history, arts, and culture, with a growing collection of more than 100,000 items.
The pace slows down north of South Beach in Mid Beach, stretching from 23rd to 63rd streets and home to the fabled Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels, among many other captivating resorts. This leisurely destination hits all the right notes — an architectural district, a historic 18-hole golf course,
a scenic boardwalk parallel to the beach and, of course, plenty of great dining, shopping, and entertainment. One of the newest enclaves of Mid Beach is the Faena District, hosting art and entertainment throughout the year, while the acclaimed Art Basel show descends annually at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
North of 63rd Street, the laid-back community of North Beach offers fantastic, family-friendly beaches, including the North Beach Oceanside Park, along with golf and tennis clubs, a skate park, and a variety of historical sites, including the Miami Beach Bandshell, welcoming diverse acts from all over the world. The Bandshell is located on Collins Avenue, the Miami Beach thoroughfare stretching all the way from South Beach up to Sunny Isles; a trek on Collins Avenue can take you anywhere on Miami Beach.
DOWNTOWN MIAMI
Downtown Miami has always been the place where big things happen. Set on the Miami River and overlooking Biscayne Bay, the downtown area has developed from a major trading post to a major metropolis — diverse and dynamic, with a multifaceted arts scene, global dining, and luxe hotels. Anchoring a host of downtown venues are the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the PAMM Art Museum, and the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat. Set against Biscayne Bay, Bayside Marketplace offers some of the city’s best shopping and dining as well as its most thrilling attractions, including Skyviews Miami, whose 42 climate-controlled gondolas tower 200 feet above the bay,
and Thriller Miami, featuring 45-minute speedboat tours around Miami and Miami Beach.
Just south of the downtown core, the Brickell Business District is one of the world’s largest financial centers, but as the “Manhattan of the South” is also a vibrant place to live and play, with shopping and dining at places like the Mary Brickell Village steps away from towering bank buildings.
Head north to find the historic enclave of Overtown, Miami’s second-oldest neighborhood (after Coconut Grove) and once known as the “Harlem of the South” with venues including the Lyric Theater welcoming legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole. Today, the Lyric still stands as part of the Black Archives Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex, joined by a vibrant new collection of restaurants and attractions.
North of Overtown and spanning the vintage Miami neighborhoods of Lemon City and Little River, the bustling Creole-speaking community of Little Haiti echoes its Caribbean homeland through exotic architecture, traditional churches, and authentic foods, spices, and music. The community’s hub is the Little Haiti Cultural Complex, home to a weekly marketplace, art gallery, dance studios, and festivals.
MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AREA
Whether you’re on a layover or stayover, the Miami International Airport (MIA) area offers a pleasing mix of amenities and attractions — including right in the terminal, where you can buy stone crabs, order a mojito, or savor authentic Cuban cuisine.
If you’re staying over, you’ll stay nearby at one of several nationally flagged hotels, including Hilton, Hyatt, and DoubleTree.

There’s a great golf course practically within swinging distance of the airport — Miami Springs Golf & Country Club — or you can take the plunge at nearby Grapeland Water Park (in season). MIA is also convenient to three major malls: Miami International Mall, Dolphin Mall, and Midway Crossings.
Heading for your flight? It’s hard to leave Miami, but Three Zero Five makes the going easier with luxury sedans and limos at your service. They also provide executive minibuses and coaches for larger groups.
AVENTURA
One of Miami’s newest neighborhoods turns a youthful 30 in 2025, and there’s a lot to celebrate in Aventura, from its great restaurants to its incredible variety of shopping that often seems to be concentrated in one venue: Aventura Mall.
One of the top shopping enclaves in the country, Aventura Mall features a mix of luxury boutiques, including Hermès, Balenciaga, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Fendi, along with a range of dining and entertainment options from chef-driven restaurants to the landmark 93-foot-tall Aventura Slide Tower.
It’s great when you’re outdoors in Aventura as well, a city of flowing waterways, rolling golf courses, and tranquil parks. End the evening at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, whose calendar includes theater, concerts, and dance.
SUNNY ISLES BEACH
Connected by bridge to the beachfront re-creation of Haulover Park, Sunny Isles Beach was a longtime vacation spot for families who flocked to the small hotel and motels lining its golden shoreline — replaced by luxury hotel towers that still beckon families and everyone else to find their spot on the sand.
Many of the hotels linking the ocean in Sunny Isles Beach are a short walk from several shopping centers, while the free SIBshuttle runs daily with routes including Aventura Mall, the Intracoastal Mall, the Intracoastal Yacht Club, and other shopping and neighborhood destinations. Or just take it easy at the beach or local parks, including Heritage Park, a four-acre recreation area with a playground and stage for music and concerts.
BAL HARBOUR
Fashionably fun and casually elegant, Bal Harbour is a quiet beachside village set on the north end of Miami Beach, where sophisticated shopping and signature dining are complemented by relaxing diversions under the sun.
Set like a jewel in an oasis of open-air walkways, fountains, and palms, Bal Harbour Shops is the village’s centerpiece, offering upscale dining options like Carpaccio, Makoto, and Le Zoo; while luxury boutiques include options like Lalique, McQueen, Bulgari, Prada, and Versace. Check out the luxe watches and fine accessories at Gray & Sons Jewelers, located just south of Bal Harbour in the seaside town of Surfside; while in nearby Bay Harbor Islands, Mike’s Cigars offers the premium brands that make great gifts.
The artistic side of Bal Harbour shines with Unscripted Bal Harbour, a public art program that also includes the Art Access Card, providing complimentary access for residents and guests to dynamic museums like the Rubell Museum, the Bass Museum, and the Pérez Art Museum.
COCONUT GROVE
The present day encroaches only so far in Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood and home to some of its most historic buildings. Set against Biscayne Bay just south of Downtown Miami, and with Bahamian roots dating to the 1800s, “the Grove” has an eclectic makeup and tropical

charm, with farmers markets, art galleries, and historic Black churches blended into a fine-dining scene, open-air shopping, trendy bars, and artisanal coffee shops.
Dinner Key Marina is the launch point for sailing and boating — take lessons at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club — while local history is explored at places like The Barnacle Historic State Park and Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a bayside mansion built in the early 1900s but filled with priceless art and furniture from the Italian Renaissance and Mediterranean Revival eras.
The Grove’s signature community event is the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024 and draws nearly 300 artists and 100,000+ attendees every Presidents Day weekend to view works in watercolors, glass, metal, photography, and more, along with music and culinary delights.
Other famed events in the Grove include the annual King Mango Strut, called “the weirdest parade in the universe” … and the names of the parade “strutters” will tell you why: The Marching Freds, The Synchronized Briefcase Brigade, The Booger King, The Million Chad March, The League of Dead Voters, Cuban Eye for the Gringo Guy, Osama Piñata, and The Hare Krishnas are among the past participants.
At the end of the day, many Grove restaurants transition into nightspots — so plan to stay late. Getting a room at one of the local hotels might be a good idea.
CORAL GABLES
One of the first fully planned communities in the nation, Coral Gables was created by Miami pioneer and developer George Merrick, who had the Spanish and Italian Rivieras in mind when he designed his city of fountains and plazas, magnificent terra cotta–colored homes, and tranquil waterways. He named the picturesque new town “Coral Gables,” after the gabled coral home — now a museum — his family built in the 1900s.
Merrick’s vision of the “City Beautiful” still distinguishes Coral Gables from anything else in South Florida, making it one of Miami’s most enviable residential addresses as well as a fascinating place to visit, with breathtaking architecture ranging from the grand City Hall building to the Biltmore Hotel, a registered historic landmark.
Easily walkable, especially for guests staying in nearby hotels, downtown Coral Gables has a European feel as shoppers cruise the streets — including the famed Miracle Mile — stopping to browse local wares or ducking into a fragrant bakery for pastries and coffee, all while enjoying the South Florida sunshine.
Scenic attractions in the sun are another aspect of the City Beautiful. Set on Coral Gables’ southeastern end, the lush

preserve of Matheson Hammock features a 45-minute nature trail and a man-made atoll pool, which is flushed naturally by the tidal action of nearby Biscayne Bay.
Nature’s bounty and people’s ingenuity meet at another popular Coral Gables attraction, Venetian Pool, which began life as a rock quarry whose rich limestone was used to build the city in the 1920s but evolved into a swimming pool of vine-covered loggias, coral caves, and sparkling waters fed by an underground spring.
KEY BISCAYNE
Just over the scenic Rickenbacker Causeway from Downtown Miami, Key Biscayne is a haven of brilliant blue waters, golden beaches, and lush green
Did you know?
In addition to Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, Greater Miami and Miami Beach offers a wide variety of challenging golf courses — from the iconic Blue Monster at Trump National Doral to the idyllic championship golf course at The Biltmore in Coral Gables and Miami Beach’s two beautiful public courses. spaces, including Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, where visitors can stroll a mile-long shoreline, ride an antique carousel with views of the ocean, be transported around the area by a miniature train, and explore coastal hammock trails by boardwalk.
Tennis and golf enthusiasts, you’ve come to the right island. The acclaimed Crandon Tennis Center houses 27 courts, including 13 lighted, while also offering lessons and hosting tournament play. Close by is Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, boasting a championship 18-hole golf course surrounded by water, mangroves, and tropical foliage. Secluded and inviting, Crandon is the only public golf course on Biscayne Bay.
Continue on to the village of Key Biscayne, home to most of the island’s boutiques and restaurants. At the end of the road — and the island — is Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, whose 1825 lighthouse overlooks beaches that are consistently ranked among the best in the country.
WYNWOOD
Wynwood’s rebirth as a hip enclave of art, dining, and entertainment began with the murals that began appearing on the old warehouses and shuttered factories lining the onceneglected streets. After developer Tony Goldman got the ball rolling in this 16-block area north of Downtown Miami, it wasn’t long before derelict warehouses became gigantic canvases for enormous, colorful, and compelling works of art, created by street and graffiti artists from not only the United States but also all around the world.
That evolution created today’s Wynwood Walls, a globally renowned street art museum acclaimed for transforming the definition of modern art and defining the careers of its contributing artists. Wynwood Walls has been joined by 10 amazing art galleries along with an eclectic roundup of restaurants, bars, and shops.
MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT
Bordering Wynwood to the north, the Miami Design District was created by the same team who transformed South Beach; and they achieved the same feat here, transforming an overlooked part of the city into a happening hub of art and design.
The furniture boutiques that once dominated the 18-block Design District have largely been replaced by luxury retailers like Versace, Christian Louboutin, and Bulgari, while shoppers strolling along its tree-lined, sculpturefilled streets can see even more highend brands, including Tiffany & Co., Fendi, and Breitling.
The District is also a dining destination showcasing Michelinstarred restaurants like COTE, Michael’s Genuine Food, Swan, ZZ’s Club, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, and Le Jardinier.
LITTLE HAVANA
Set directly west of Downtown Miami’s Brickell area, this slice of Old Havana created by Cuban exiles in the 1960s seems to hum with perpetual activity, especially along
SW Eighth Street — known locally as Calle Ocho — a vibrant thoroughfare lined with Latininspired restaurants, bakeries, fruit stands, cigar shops, rum bars, art galleries, and music venues.
You’ll stroll past cigar factories and exotic shops, stop to watch a game of dominoes in the park, and uncover history at Cuban Memorial Plaza. With open-air coffee counters on nearly every corner, you can grab a quick, sweet shot of café cubano as you contemplate dining options spanning the world from Cuba to Central America and Europe.
Weekends on Calle Ocho heat up with Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays), a street festival of music, dancing, and art. But the biggest festival of all here is the annual Carnaval/Calle Ocho, known as the world’s largest block party, which takes over 15 blocks of Little Havana with musical stages, international food, sampling sites, folkloric dance, and entertainment.
DORAL
Anchored by a historic golf resort, the community of Doral offers cosmopolitan pleasures like great shopping and dining mixed with abundant outdoor diversions.
The community that grew up around the resort — now the Trump National Doral Miami — offers world-class parks and cultural activities, multiple universities, multinational companies, world-class hotels, a flourishing art scene, and scores of dining experiences, including the Doral Food & Wine Festival.
Be sure to stop in at CityPlace Doral, which combines retail space and residences with dining, shopping, wellness, and entertainment.
Getting around Doral is a breeze thanks to Freebee, a free door-to-door, on-demand transportation service offered by the City of Doral.
SOUTH MIAMI/ KENDALL
Bordering the University of Miami and Coral Gables is the municipality of South Miami, a community of leafy residential areas, lush parks, and a vibrant downtown filled with historic buildings, restaurants, and unique shops.
Combining big-city living with a small-town feel, South Miami lures visitors with 48 acres of parkland and an extraordinary blend of shops, eateries, and entertainment venues. Whether you’re craving a cozy café, seeking out the latest fashion trends, or eager to indulge in a culinary adventure, “SoMi” Town Center has it all.
. NEIGHBOR HOODS
A bit further south, the city of Kendall is known for the popular Dadeland Mall, offering more than 150 stores and restaurants such as Texas de Brazil, Earls Kitchen + Bar, and CVI.CHE 105.
Meanwhile, new locally owned eateries are debuting everywhere in the Kendall area, from the bustling Downtown Dadeland — a hub of shopping, fashion, and nightlife — to the vibrant, up-and-coming West Kendall, serving everything from farm-to-table cuisine to organic, vegetarian, and vegan options. Golf courses and family-friendly parks are also part of the fun in Kendall.
SOUTH DADE/HOMESTEAD
South of the Miami metropolitan area, the southern reaches of the county offer new worlds of discovery, while agriculture and wilderness spread toward the ocean and Florida Bay.
Once in Homestead, you’ll be at the gateway of two natural wonders: Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park. The lush, mysterious Everglades are the state’s “River of Grass” and the only subtropical in North America. East of Homestead, Biscayne National Park is one of just a few
parks in the world, a watery wonderland of brilliant fish and coral reefs.
Then step back in time on a walking tour of the Downtown Historic District, which is filled with heritage sites from its days as a frontier town but also offers boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, and eateries.
In addition to the charms of vintage Homestead, South Miami-Dade County offers a more modern shopping scene, with The Falls, Southland Mall, and the Florida Keys Marketplace in Florida City among the choices.

Top 10 Ways to Play
WITH ITS MIX OF CULTURE, NATURE, AND ENTERTAINMENT, GREATER MIAMI AND MIAMI BEACH OFFERS ENDLESS WAYS FOR FAMILIES TO CREATE UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES TOGETHER.
By Lisa Simundson
Lots of visitors — from art aficionados to foodies to fashionistas — think Miami was made just for them. But it was also made for kids, with kid-sized excitement around every corner. Little ones — and their older siblings — will have a blast with these 10 family-friendly activities and attractions.
ZOO MIAMI
LMiami houses more than 2,500 animals in environments that mimic their natural habitats, with large, openair exhibits allowing guests to observe beautiful and endangered wildlife.
Rated one of the top 10 zoos in the country, Zoo
Animal ambassadors introduce critters in the zoo’s amphitheater, while the Conservation Action Center allows guests to crawl through a larger-than-life python. Take the kids on a VIP Experience or guided tram tour; or rent a safari cycle and pedal the four miles of walkways together. Playgrounds and water play areas allow kids to cool off while blowing off some steam.
AIRBOAT IN EVERGLADES
Explore Everglades wetlands and swamps via Airboat in Everglades tours, which kids will love because it’s fast (but safe) and gets you up close to the gators lurking just below the water’s surface. You’ll also see manatees and birds of every feather flocking together as an expert guide narrates the action. Make an afternoon of it with a private or semiprivate tour including food and drink, if desired.
JUNGLE ISLAND
One of Florida’s original attractions, Parrot Jungle evolved over the decades into Jungle Island — actually set on an island between the Miami mainland and Miami Beach. Kids will love animal encounters with lemurs, sloths, and tortoises, while birds are everywhere, from chattering parrots to elegant flamingos. Among the many attractions are a playground, a petting zoo, and a Treewalk Village, where kids can climb from tree house to tree house through eight-foot-tall hammocks, nets, and wood bridges.
CORAL CASTLE
Called “Florida’s Stonehenge,” Coral Castle was built by one man, Edward Leedskalnin, who was able to move tons of rock,
seemingly without machinery of any kind. He only worked at night, away from prying eyes, and secretly sculpted 1,100 tons of coral into an open-air “castle.” It’s been said his interest in physics and knowledge of the ancient pyramids led to this accomplishment. Maybe you or your kids will figure it out.
THE FROST MUSEUM
Located in Downtown Miami’s Maurice A. Ferré Park, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is a leading-edge science museum dedicated to sparking wonder and investigation while fueling innovation. The 250,000-square-foot museum is divided into four distinct buildings: the Frost Planetarium, Aquarium, and the North and West Wings. Without realizing how much they’re learning, kids can explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun, experiential setting with interactive exhibitions and unique shows.
MIAMI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
When (or if) you’re ready for a break from the beach, the Miami Children’s Museum is an ideal family destination, with hands-on activities and interactive exhibits galore. Among the experiences are Roar & Explore with Dinosaurs, All About Art, Construction Zone, Castle of Dreams, and even a mock Cruise Ship including interactive models of the real thing.
FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN
Fairchild will captivate the entire family as you view orchids and other native plants, not to mention the “Wings of the Tropics” butterfly exhibit, home to hundreds of butterflies creating a living rainbow of color. Kids can interact with the natural world in the Children’s Garden, and they’ll also love Expedition Discovery, an adventure through the rainforest, deserts, science labs, and more.
A DAY AT THE BEACH
It’s no secret Miami is loved for its beaches, and all you have to do to find the shoreline is head east. In addition to hotel beaches, public beaches run along the sand-fringed shores of southernmost Miami Beach north through Mid
Beach and Surfside and beyond that, Bal Harbour, Haulover Park, and Sunny Isles Beach. Many beaches offer activities like volleyball, bicycle trails, and watersports equipment rentals. For the little ones, the waters of Crandon Park in Key Biscayne are tamed by an offshore sandbar.
GULFSTREAM PARK
Gulfstream Park offers an exciting experience for families with a variety of kid-friendly attractions beyond its famous horse racing. This entertainment zone just north of Aventura also includes The Village at Gulfstream Park, where families can enjoy a wide array of shops, casual dining options, and even a playground for younger children. Additionally, the park often hosts family-focused events, including festivals and live entertainment, making it a fun destination for all ages.
A WALK IN THE PARK
Parks and green spaces are everywhere in the Magic City, including state, national, and local parks with bikeways and nature trails, plus watersports equipment rentals and even pony rides — offered at Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park in North Miami. To the south, kids will love the petting zoo and Splash ’N Play water playground at Pinecrest Gardens; while in South Dade, the Fruit & Spice Park entices with tastings galore and 150 varieties of mango alone.
Miami Children’s Museum
Stroll or cycle through stunning botanical gardens, marvel at exotic animals from Africa, Asia, the Amazon, and right here in Florida.
Whether you create lifelong memories with family or enjoy a solo escape into nature, every step you take helps make a di erence.

SAVORING LATIN AMERICA
No visit to Miami is complete without feasting on Latin American fare. From classic Cuban dishes to Honduran street food and Puerto Rican specialties, here are some of the best spots to experience Latin cuisine. When it comes to Cuban cuisine, Havana 1957 leads the pack with three popular locations in Miami Beach, including one on the iconic Española Way. Signature dishes like Roast Pork, Flank Steak, and Charbroiled Skirt Steak are served with traditional sides of rice, beans, plantains, and yucca. For delicious Cuban sandwiches, head to Old’s Havana Cuban Bar & Cocina, just a short walk from Downtown Miami’s Little Havana Visitors Center, where you can enjoy classics like the Cubano, Media Noche,
Sid Hoeltzell (2)
and Pan Con Bistec. Nearby, Paseo Catracho offers a taste of Honduras with its famous pupusas — thick corn tortillas stuffed with pork, beans, and/or cheese.
Also in the Little Havana area, Mofongo serves up its Puerto Rican namesake dish: crispy green plantains mashed with garlic and pork rinds, served with your choice of meat, seafood, or veggies. Another standout on the menu is the Kan-Kan Pork Chop, an enormous pork chop glazed in passion fruit and accompanied by Puerto Rican rice with pigeon peas and mofongo of your choice. A CULINARY MASTERPIECE
By Vanessa Molina Santamaria
There’s no shortage of big and fancy restaurants across our great city, but if you’re craving a more intimate and authentic dining experience that will leave a lasting impression on you long after you’ve savored the last bite of your meal, then Chef Juan Camilo Liscano’s Palma in Little Havana is your ideal culinary destination.
Palma is Chef Liscano’s first foray into restaurant ownership, and his years of culinary experience really shine through in each dish you’ll enjoy as part of his $85, eight-course menu of rotating options. Though the flavors are unquestionably local with a Latin flair, you can also feel the global influences that Liscano has learned throughout his years in the restaurant business.
GLOBAL INFLUENCES
Palma has provided the ideal setting for Liscano to showcase his creativity and global influences. The modest space, with seating for just 20 at tables and 5 at the counter, located just south of the Miami River, offers an intimate and exclusive atmosphere — a refreshing change of pace from Miami’s other dining spots.
INCREDIBLE OFFERINGS
Born in Miami to Colombian parents, Liscano was exposed to diverse cultures from an early age thanks to his father’s career in the airline industry. This love of travel played a significant role in shaping his culinary journey. As Liscano pursued his career as a chef, he steadily worked his way up in some of the world’s top restaurants, including Quintonil in Mexico City, Maison by Sota Atsumi in Paris, Momofuku Ko in New York, and Ikoyi in London. Before long, he was ready to return to his hometown and embark on the next chapter: opening his own restaurant.
The real star at Palma is, of course, the food. The ever-evolving eightcourse menu is a delightful showcase of seasonal ingredients, offering an eclectic array of flavors. Depending on when you visit, you might savor dishes such as beef tartare, fresh scallops and oysters, steamed fish, freshly baked bread with butter, house-made ice cream, pastries, and more. Each dish is crafted with care, ensuring you’ll want to return again and again to see what new culinary creations await.

From the moment Cleveland native Julia Tuttle set foot in the swampy forest that would one day become modern-day Miami while visiting her homesteader parents on Biscayne Bay, she knew she was home. After her husband died, she became the region’s greatest ambassador, ultimately convincing railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his railroad south from West Palm Beach to a land she promised him would never freeze. Since the “Mother of Miami” swapped her own land for a train station, Miami and its namesake county have welcomed millions of visitors — many of whom have returned to stay — turning the region into a kaleidoscope of riveting colors, vibrant culture, and distinctive flair. Whether you’re strolling through the eclectic shops of Miami Beach, exploring the chic boutiques of Coconut Grove, or discovering hidden gems in Little Havana, there’s no shortage of one-of-a-kind items that capture the essence of the 305. Come along with us as we introduce you to a few local finds that you may want to take back home with you.
ROMERO BRITTO

That led to other advertising campaigns with Movado, Disney, BMW, Pepsi, and Royal Caribbean Cruises. Today you can visit his iconic Miami Beach gallery or the BRITTO® stores in Aventura Mall, Brickell City Centre, or Dadeland Mall, where he titles his use of bold and brilliant colors as The Art of Happiness. If you get to MIA for your flight home and realize you can’t live without a Britto, head over to the North Terminal, where you’ll find another of his galleries near Gate D-30.

From thrilling matchups to world-class events and tournaments, Miami is a destination where sporting excellence takes center stage.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
Since 1966, this ninth expansion team of the American Football League has been the pride of South Florida. The Miami Dolphins is now rated the second-best team in the National Football League by the NFL Players Association, whose game record of 11-6 only trails the 13-4 record of the Baltimore Ravens. Two years after the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970, the Dolphins sealed their legacy by becoming the only team in NFL history to remain undefeated, achieving a 17-0 score in 1972. The team currently boasts 13 American
Football Conference East division championships, five American Football Conference titles, 25 playoff appearances, and two Super Bowl Championships. The Miami Dolphins hold court in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. www.miamidolphins.com
MIAMI HEAT
Established in 1988 as an expansion team of the National Basketball Association, the Miami Heat earned acclaim early on with such outstanding players as Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, and Dwyane Wade. They were coaxed to fame by Coach Pat Riley, who led his players to win their first NBA championship in 2006. Six and seven years later, their on-court prowess won them back-to-back NBA trophies in both 2012 and 2013. The Miami Heat’s 2024-2025 season runs through April 13, 2025. www.nba.com/heat
FLORIDA PANTHERS
While it may sound ironic in the tropics, professional ice hockey players have made a name for themselves here since the Florida Panthers were founded as an expansion team in 1993. They compete in the National Hockey League as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers proved their hokey mettle on the ice almost immediately, lacking only one win to qualify for the playoffs in each of their first two seasons. They played their home games at Miami Arena until 1998 when they relocated to the City of Sunrise in nearby Broward County. The Panthers made it to the big time in 2024 after winning the title of Eastern Conference Champion and then beating Western Conference Champion Edmonton

INTER MIAMI CF
Officially launched as Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami in January 2018, Major League Soccer’s 25th Club is now simply known as Inter Miami. Although technically based in Fort Lauderdale about 30 miles north of Miami, Managing Owner and CEO Jorge Mas Santos — a descendant of Cuban refugees born in Miami — doesn’t really note the difference, describing Miami’s first professional soccer team as “a hyperglobal, yet local, team that represents our fans and our city.” Along with team owner David Beckham, he planned and designed the 19,100-seat Chase Stadium and Florida Blue Training Center on the site of the old Lockheed Stadium. While the team lost its inaugural game 1-0 against Supporters’ Shield in Los Angeles on March 1, 2020, its talented players quickly rebounded with a debut home-turf victory against Orlando City Soccer Club in their brand-new stadium. The team’s many outstanding international players include Argentine Forward Lionel Messi and Uruguayan Forward Luis Suarez. www.intermiamicf.com
