Best Beach for Baywatching Beautiful people are everywhere at Lummus Park Beach in the Art Deco District. That may be why its nickname is Glitter Beach. The scenic shore has been the backdrop for many a television and film scene. It’s a great place to people watch or hang out with family and friends. Amenities include restrooms and paved paths for walking and biking.

Best Beach for Romance As the sun sets over tropical seas, the horizon sometimes seems to briefly glow green. Science says the Green Flash is caused by light refraction. Or maybe it’s magic. The flash lasts for a nanosecond and is easy to miss. Islanders say couples that catch it are blessed with eternal love. We can’t guarantee that you’ll see the Green Flash at South Pointe Park Beach, but with 360-degree ocean views we will tell you that this southerly shore is one of the island’s most popular spots for enjoying romantic sunsets.

The City of Miami Beach offers myriad sporting options — and some surprising innovations. Lummus Park, for instance, combines postcard-perfect scenery with technological advances. Thanks to an extensive makeover, the beach now offers a high-end gym experience, the first of its kind, with more than 30 workout options and even tutorials linked to a smartphone app. But there’s more to Miami Beach than fun in the sun. Music, dance, theater and museums are among the city’s cultural offerings, along with architectural treasures like the Art Deco

hotels you’ve admired in countless TV shows and movies. Given its enthusiasm for culture, it’s not surprising then that Miami Beach hosts the prestigious Art Basel international art fair, which brings thousands of artists, collectors and curators to the Miami Beach Convention Center each year. We’ve taken giant steps to transform this barrier island into a world-renowned playground and a livable community that will sustain generations to come. iami Beach is a paradise for players, a get-out-and-go destination that makes it easy to get your game on. Rent a Jet Ski or ride a high-speed boat and make some waves, dive or snorkel and discover underwater wonders, play a round of golf, take an open-air bus tour or walk back in time on a guided tour of the city’s 1930s-era Art Deco District. No matter what kind of excursion you’re looking for, the city’s must-do deck is stacked with fun-filled activities and attractions. It’s hard to imagine that just a few decades ago, Miami Beach was a run-down retirement community in the eyes of many travelers. Then came Miami Vice and Gianni Versace and a slew

of investors and entrepreneurs, and suddenly, it seemed, no one was at a loss for things to see and do in the new American Riviera. Now tourists from around the world flock to Miami Beach, and the first place they go is — you guessed it — the beach.

A Shore Thing Only it’s not just one beach. The city boasts 15 miles of postcardperfect shores, each with a distinctive flavor. South Beach (SoBe) — the one everybody sees on TV and reads about in magazines— begins at Fifth Street and Ocean Drive, and it’s everything you’ve imagined: beautiful bodies basking on sun-kissed sand and frolicking in crystalclear water as lifeguards keep watch

from candy-colored stations. Stargazers may spot a celebrity or two at South Pointe Park. Film crews tend to frequent this popular beach and its spectacular 360-degree ocean views. Or perhaps you’ll sight a supermodel posing for a photo shoot at Glitter Beach, the South Beach strand more properly known as Lummus Park. For a change of pace, head north to tamer Mid-Beach, from 23rd Street to 63rd Street. A small but scenic stretch of shore is the appropriately named 21st–45th Street Beach. Out and About Although it may not seem like it, bustling South Beach is an eminently walkable neighborhood. Day or night, Lincoln Road is a paradise of promenades. The miles-long pedestrian mall is home to scores of trendy galleries and famously branded boutiques. Buskers and other street performers will tease your appetite for entertainment. Reserve a table at a chic restaurant or sidle up to a sidewalk café for hours of perfect people watching. Pedestrian-friendly as well is South Beach’s small but charming Española Way. Only about two blocks long, this

Euro-flavored street was beloved by gangster Al Capone, who ran a gambling ring here in the Roaring ‘20s. Today it’s a tranquil cluster of Spanish Colonial–style shops and restaurants just off heavily trafficked Ocean Drive. The handful of boutiques here are stocked with treasures you won’t find elsewhere, from funky chunky bracelets to one-of-a-kind collectibles. lines, the Art Deco style popular in the 1920s and 1930s is well represented by the Delano and other hotels along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive. Other historic buildings have found a new life as galleries, restaurants and entertainment venues. The Colony Theatre, for example, opened in 1935 as a Paramount Movies house. Today it’s the 415-seat, state-of-the-art host of music, dance and theatrical productions staged by resident Miami New Drama. In addition, structurally minded sightseers should check out the Collins Waterfront Architectural District, north of 24th Street. Here you’ll find a variety of styles reminiscent of the 1940s through the 1960s, including

In a previous life, this haven for multicolored fish was a margarita bar that was purposely sunk off South Beach during the Cinco de Mayo Festival of 2000. Pérez Art Museum Miami in Museum Park, Downtown Miami

Miami Beach was founded in 1915, but the area’s history stretches back more than 10,000 years. That’s what you’ll learn if you visit HistoryMiami Museum in Downtown Miami. Since its opening in 1940, the Smithsonian affiliate has reigned as Florida’s largest history museum, featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions and shows. Not to be missed is the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach. It’s housed in two

adjacent synagogues steeped in history. Jewish immigrants began to arrive in Miami at the turn of the 20th century. By the 1970s they accounted for more than 80 percent of Miami Beach’s population. Local concentration camp survivors worked with sculptor Kenneth Treister to create The Holocaust Memorial in 1984, which features an impressive wall that honors victims. Next door, it’s all about horticulture

at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The meditative urban oasis showcases subtropical plants and trees from all over the world, such as bromeliads, palms and orchids, as well as a Japanese garden, edible garden and water features. It’s absolutely picture-perfect, and a stroll through the 2.6-acre garden will surely feed your soul. If you’re looking for artistic enlightenment, you’ve come to the right

place. With a booming cultural scene, Miami Beach boasts world-class art museums and galleries. Here are just a few standouts:

Miami Mountain, Ugo Rondinone

The Bass Museum of Art presents contemporary works of art ranging from paintings and sculptures to fashion and architecture. Founded in 1964, it is named after John and Johanna Bass, two of the first private collection donors. Their collection can now be found in one of the first-level galleries. The museum reopened in October 2017 after a $12 million renovation. A complete visual rebrand took place along with structural upgrades, including the addition of four galleries, a museum shop, café and an education facility. Facing Collins Park and the Art Deco District, the entrance of The Bass is marked by one of its permanent collection pieces, Ugo Rondinone’s Miami Mountain. The structure is bursting with bright shades of red, lime green, orange, electric blue and bubblegum pink. Inspired by the “hoodoo” rock formations in the American West, Miami Mountain stands 42 feet tall and was designed to emulate a moment frozen in time. The neon Eternity Now sign (the work of Sylvie Fleury) glowing above the main entrance is another part of the 10-year initiative to add international contemporary art to the museum’s permanent collection. Along with Rondinone and Fleury, the official acquisition for 2017 was Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla’s Petrified Petrol Pump (Pemex II), 2011. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Juan Chipoco spent countless hours as a kid learning about all the flavorful and aromatic soups and stews his grandmother made. After holding several jobs in the restaurant and hospitality industry, his passion for the restaurant business was ignited. Chipoco moved to the United States more than 25 years ago to follow his dreams — and with all the awards and accolades he’s received since then, it’s clear his is a true success story. Known for its vast selection of innovative ceviches, as well as mouthwatering traditional Peruvian dishes and modern interpretations of that country’s staples, CVI.CHE 105 has gained quite a following. With locations in South Beach, Downtown Miami and Aventura Mall, CVI.CHE 105 was named best ceviche in Miami by Miami New Times, ranked as best Peruvian restaurant by TripAdvisor and selected as one of the best restaurants in Miami by Zagat. The happily married father of twins has quickly risen to the top of

Miami’s culinary scene, yet he remains humble. “I strongly believe that in order to achieve greatness, you must be truly humble in every action or direction you take,” says Chipoco.

What are some of the most memorable moments in your career? One has to be the Ceviche Throwdown at Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill back in 2010, where I had the enormous pleasure of competing against highly skilled celebrity chefs and winning the best ceviche award. Another memorable moment takes me back to the Icon Brickell in 2007, where we catered an event for more than 1,800 people. Staying on top of every detail for such a large event — from the logistics to the cooking — proved to be quite challenging, but everything was perfect.

What makes CVI.CHE 105 stand out from the rest? Although we are focused on our craft and our constant evolution, important concepts such as consistency, determination, excellence and true passion for what we do have proven to be key in our continued success.

Who has been the biggest source of inspiration in your life? Without a doubt, my children.

What’s your favorite dish on the menu? My active lifestyle requires a dish high in protein, which is why Juan Chipoco’s Iron Man has become my personal favorite. It combines tender pieces of filet mignon and select seafood, cooked in a fiery wok with onions, cilantro, mushrooms and tomatoes. Andean potatoes, Peruvian choclo and Paria cheese also accompany it. It’s the perfect option for those into fitness.

Name one hidden gem that visitors should check out. Fratelli Milano in downtown has outstanding Italian cuisine.

Back in the 1970s, there was little reason to visit Wynwood. Then graffiti artists got the notion to brighten up drab walls with giant murals. In 2009, the late Tony Goldman had a vision to create an open-air, pedestrian-friendly art gallery. Soon artists from around the world took notice of the funky Wynwood Walls and flocked here to set up shop. Today Wynwood is a close-knit community and a haven for artists and art lovers alike. Developers have taken previously abandoned warehouses and transformed them into stylish bistros, trendy boutiques and red-hot nightspots. O Cinema, for example, turned a

Like its Miami Beach sister, O Cinema Wynwood features the best of first-run foreign and art films, along with classic and family movies. Head brewer Eric Hernandez puts a Miami twist on traditional beer styles to

produce creative, quality craft brews like Havana Lager. It’s brewed in the Vienna style but surprises you with a tropical twist. Stiltsville Pilsner is hopped up with the herb that gives beer its distinctive bitter edge. So is the aptly named Más Hops. A bit sweeter is the exotic Tangerica, brewed from wheat and the juice of tangerines, with zest from the peels. In addition, the brewery creates special beers to go along with special events. Other events on the calendar include Battle of the Bands, American Craft Beer Week, and the Concrete Beach Brewery Anniversary Party. Deck the (Wynwood) Walls with a Walls Imperial Porter! But, when it comes to Lincoln Road, it’s hard to forget Alchemist, a boutique carrying specialty designers. The most unique aspect of this store, however, is its appearance and location. Designed by Rene Gonzalez Architecture, the shop sits in a striking glass box on the fifth level of the 1111 Lincoln Road parking structure, with sweeping views of the Miami skyline.

Located north of 14th Street between Washington and Pennsylvania Avenues, Española Way is known for its beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture that dates back to the early 1920s. Rather than feature a score of world-famous brands, this pedestrian-friendly European style enclave has art galleries, hip bars and unique little shops — like Bia’s Jewelry, where you’ll find eclectic, funky pieces that you probably won’t see anywhere else. A hot destination for club hopping, Washington Avenue is known for its energetic nightlife. Don’t be surprised if you spot a celebrity or two at Dream Nightclub, where Kim Kardashian West, Diddy and Usher have been spotted. Washington Avenue also boasts a score of uncommon shops. Embrace your alter ego with costumes and vintage wear from Beatnix, celebrate the beach bum in you with beach-ready gear at Surf Style and browse an immense selection of bikes, skateboards and paddleboards at Fritz’s Skate Bike & Surf. Sunset Harbour is one of the newest go-to spots in South Beach for fashionistas. Here you’ll find popular boutiques such as Peace Love World, Blush and Eberjey. Next to the boat launch are the Sunset Harbour Shops. With its trendy, checkered design along the building’s façade, it’s hard to miss. Adding greenery to your home can be just as important as other accessories — if not more so — and the tropical setting will make you feel like you’re still on vacation. Miami-based interior designer Maite Granda (maitegranda.com) is passionate about creating luxury spaces using a mix of colors, textures and modern elements that result in visually stunning designs. Whether she’s designing a primary residence or a vacation home for her upscale clientele, there are plants she favors to add a good vibe and spruce up her designs. We sat down with Granda — who received the “10,000 Ideabook Saves” badge from Houzz, with more than 10,000 people adding images of her interior design work to their inspiration boards — to talk about the power of plants.

Houseplants are hot right now! What are some of your personal favorites? Yes! Houseplants have become very fashionable in today’s home. Orchids and ficus are my favorites, but I like most indoor plants. I often use Ficus lyrata (also known as the fiddle-leaf fig) because it blends in nicely with most interiors. It has a tall slender trunk with big lush leaves that create a warm, elegant look. Areca palms and bamboo plants are beautiful, too. What are some health Maite Granda benefits? Most plants convert the carbon dioxide we exhale into fresh oxygen, and they can also remove toxins from the air we breathe. Therefore, indoor houseplants are

effective natural air purifiers. Edible plants offer benefits, too — rosemary improves memory; mint helps with nausea and digestive problems, as well as depression; aloe vera strengthens the immune system, alleviates menstrual problems, reduces arthritis pain and heals wounds. The list goes on. What is the best placement for greenery? Most interior plants do well near a window because there’s good natural light without direct sun exposure. Is there a planter you favor? Self-watering planters by Lechuza. They are stylish, modern and come in many sizes and colors.
