The Mashulaville Dormitory is exploding with hilarity. Our mishmash of a group of young Amish folks from Pennsylvania, Nappanee and civilization is in the common room playing a game of What Would You Do If …? on the first day of 2015.
We arrived here in Mississippi late Saturday, attended church on Sunday and managed to get some work done this weekend. Now it’s Thursday and the trip is almost over. This game is a fitting grand finale.
Each of the 20 or so participants writes down three What Would You Do If …? Questions on one sheet and three random answers on another sheet. The papers are passed out at random, each participant getting a set of questions and a set of answers. They’re read in rotation around the room, each player asking a question of the person beside him. Then the second person reads his answer.
Some of the combinations are fitting, such as: “What would you do if it snowed five feet?”
The answer is, “I would praise the one who sent it.”
Some are awkward, such as the one I have to read. “What would you do if I asked you to marry me?”
The lass I’m “asking” is from Pennsylvania, she is certainly a nice girl, but I am nowhere near ready to pop the question. Her answer extinguishes any sparks. “I would throw mud at his horse and run like crazy.” So much for that. I just want to know who the joker is who wrote down that question.
Some combinations are funny and at least one rises to gut-bustingly hilarious. This is when Rachel Glick asks Junior Beiler, “What would you do if I kissed you on the cheek?”
Junior is laughing too hard to read his answer, so I read it for him. “I would jump up and down and shout, ‘You bet!’”
At 1 a.m. Friday morning, the drivers come. It is time to leave Mississippi. So we do. But it will be a long time before we forget this week.
Our three van loads of Yankees roll northward through a dark and quiet Mississippi. We pass through Tennessee and into Kentucky. We stop for breakfast and then at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.
This is my first visit to a truly remarkable piece of God’s creation. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave in the world with 400 miles of recorded passageways.
Our first tour covers two miles and takes us through places like “The Rotunda,” “The Bottomless Pit,” “Fat Man’s Misery” and “Tall Man’s Misery.” We find no trace of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher.
We hit one other tour before we leave. This one is called “Domes and Dripstones” and many of us feel it is the more scenic of the two. The highlight of this tour is a place called “Frozen Niagara,” a huge mass of flowstone that exhibits God’s creative might.
Kentucky marks our parting with the other groups. It is bittersweet, as the ending of so many such trips are. It is such a joy getting to know these fellow Christians and then it is a bit wrenching to part. But, we would do it again in a heartbeat.
If I may paraphrase the popular saying, “It is better to have met and parted than to never have met at all.’
We quite deliberately neglect to ask the girl from Pennsylvania for her sentiments on this.

SHOULD I PAVE MY DRIVEWAY?
When considering home improvements before selling, homeowners may wonder if paving the driveway will significantly boost their resale value. The simple answer is: yes, it can. However, whether it’s the best investment for your particular situation depends on a few factors.
In some cases, a newly paved driveway can increase a property’s value by $10,000 to $20,000. This figure might be at the higher end, but the added value often outweighs the initial cost of installation. The cost of installation can vary significantly between companies, but keep in mind that opting for the cheapest option might cost more in the long run when considering future maintenance.
Different materials bring different benefits and maintenance needs; concrete: known for its durability and low maintenance, can increase property value by 5-10%, while asphalt is a more cost-effective option upfront that requires periodic sealing and repairs, though adds a great value along with a higher aesthetic.
Curb appeal plays a huge role in a buyer’s first impression. A well-paved driveway can significantly enhance this appeal, especially if other homes in the area have well-maintained or paved driveways. On the flip side, if your driveway is in poor condition while your neighbors’ are pristine, your home might be perceived as less valuable.
While a driveway improvement is valuable, it’s wise to consider whether it’s the best investment. In some cases, projects like kitchen improvements, painting your front door, or bathroom upgrades may offer a higher return on investment, or ROI. Likewise, addressing essential home repairs before selling can prevent costly delays after the home inspection process.
One consideration often overlooked is how paving can affect your property taxes. Driveway enhancements, especially with asphalt or concrete, can lead to a higher property valuation, which in turn may increase your property taxes. It’s always a good idea to check with your local tax assessor’s office to understand the specific impact in your area.
FINAL THOUGHTS
While paving your driveway can yield a solid return, it’s important to weigh your options. If your home is already in line with neighborhood standards, this could be a great way to boost its value and appeal. However, for maximum impact, you might also want to consider other upgrades that fit your home’s specific needs and market demands.

We hope Wayne’s article was of value to your decision-making process. To add to that, we believe there is a buyer for every property, and even the right buyer will have things they’d like to change. Catching up on routine maintenance or finishing old projects is a tried and trued way to impress potential buyers, and could save you the hassle of a major renovation that may not tip the scale for your “right buyer” anyway. The Question
By James Miller
“How are you treating life?”
Wait…What? How am I treating life?
The question, reversed from the usual “How’s life treating you?” caught me completely off guard.
It’s one to ponder, isn’t it?
Consider the following story:
Many years ago, in the small town of Outlook, lived Wilbur and Penn, best friends since birth. Having lived no more than a quarter mile apart their whole lives, they learned the dos and don’ts of life together.
For years, some of the townspeople had struggled financially, and as Wilbur and Penn grew older, the situation seemed to worsen. Going to bed hungry became a common practice—in fact, they barely remembered what a full stomach felt like.
At the age of fifteen, they both managed to land a job with the local blacksmith. Wages, however, were very low, and every week’s pay went directly to slightly lower the debt their parents had been accumulating in order to survive.
Every day they had to pass the expansive estate of the wealthy Crafts, and every day they would pause a little to gaze longingly out across the sheep-dotted landscape.
One such evening, Penn remarked, upon impulse, “You know, John Craft could lose a hundred sheep and not even realize it.”
Wilbur agreed. “Besides, he’s so rich, if he lost the whole flock, his finances would never suffer. He would just buy another thousand.”
Suddenly a gleam of anger flashed through Penn’s eyes. “Why is he so rich and we’re so poor? Life shouldn’t be like that!”
Wilbur was taken by surprise. He had always accepted the fact that some people were rich and some people were poor—that was just the way life was. Now, however, the injustice of it all settled upon him. His blue eyes snapped. “You’re right! We work hard every day, and still we’re starving! It’s wrong! He should share!”
Penn agreed. “Isn’t it just as wrong for him to hoard his sheep as it is for us to steal? I say we needn’t even feel guilty!”
Wilbur was already heading for the fence. “One sheep,” he said. “No one will know. No harm will be done.”
Thus encouraged, the boys proceeded to carry out their first act of robbery.
Unfortunately, it was not the last. As is often the case, if you give Satan your finger, he will grab your whole hand. Stealing sheep became a regular practice, the boys having convinced themselves that what they were doing was actually not wrong, and that Mr. Craft would never notice.
But he did. He stayed up one night to find out what was happening.
The boys were caught red-handed.
The town was shocked. Wilbur and Penn—thieves? No one would have guessed! The boys had seemed like such responsible young adults—the envy of every parent.
A punishment was decided—the boys would get an “S” branded on their foreheads, so everyone would know that they were Sheep thieves.
Dismayed and upset, Wilbur tried to return to a regular routine and normal life—but he could not. Everywhere he went, it seemed, people were pointing and whispering.
Finally, having had enough, Wilbur moved to another town. However, the “S” went with him—people wanted to know what it stood for, and the pointing and whispering started all over again.
Years passed. Wilbur kept moving, trying to get away from people’s accusing looks, but always the “S” remained, openly condemning him.
It came to a point, finally, that Wilbur thought he could no longer bear the burden that had been thrust upon him, and he took his own life.
Penn too, was horribly ashamed and embarrassed. Sorry for what he had done, he apologized to Mr. Craft, offering to someday repay whatever he asked of him, and to his parents for bringing such disgrace to the family name. Then, realizing that no amount of effort would change the past, he determined to never again do such a thing, and from that day forth do his best to live a godly and upright life—in fact, he would rather starve than steal.
The stares and accusations were at first disconcerting, but Penn decided to not let it bother him. Even though it took a while, he realized that eventually it no longer did.
Then, too, it seemed the whispers and pointing fingers were gradually dying down. People seemed to be forgetting about it.
Sixty years later
As the trio of nine-year-old boys made their way down the street, they looked up to see Penn, now an old man, approaching them. As usual, he smiled and chatted with them a little bit before moving on.
As they watched him go, one of the boys remarked, “I wonder what that S on his forehead stands for.”
After a few moments of thoughtful silence, another of the boys said, “All I can think of is saint.”
Story derived from a sermon—names, details and conversations added.
* * *
The difference between Wilbur and Penn and how they treated life is astounding. One allowed himself to be miserably controlled by his past; the other chose to learn from it, move on, and make the best of things.
“How are you treating life?” might, after all, be the proper way to say it.

God Is In Control
by Cristy Eash
It was a beautiful, sunny, late spring morning almost twenty years ago. The heavy morning dew gave the grass a sparkling array, along with hundreds of dandelions, to add splendid color to the pasture fields.
I hitched the faithful old steed to the buggy to go to church and turned the other horses out to the lush, green, early summer grass.
I let my Sunday morning thoughts be distracted by the beautiful yearling filly as she was leaving the barn. I watched her as she moved about, holding her head and neck just right. Perfect formation, perfect color…everything seemed so in place for me to finally “ring the bell” with a prize winner at the upcoming fall auction.
For one year now I had been admiring this elegant filly and dreaming of this prize winner in my barn.
Coming home from church that afternoon, she caught my attention again, lying flat on her side, absorbing the sun’ s warmth.
A couple of hours later we went out to do the chores, and this filly (MY prize-winner) did not come to the barn. She was still lying in the same spot, so we went out to investigate.
What! She was dead! MY “big money” filly! MY prize winner! Dead!
The hair towards the bottom of her legs were still bunched together from the heavy dew. Her mouth was still full of grass. There were no signs of struggling. We rolled her stiff body to the other side to check for a stray bullet hole. There was no bullet hole, no blood, nothing out of place.
I stood still for a while and pondered, my thoughts turning to God and the Scriptures. Had she died on any other day of the week, it might not have conveyed the message as loud and clear to me as it did on that Sunday afternoon. A day God had purposefully set aside as a day to worship Him, and where had my thoughts been?
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal… (Matt. 6:19)
God is in control. All “our” (prize-winning) possessions are not ours. How will we use and manage His possessions He gives to us?
The wisdom of Solomon in Proverbs 22 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver or gold.”
Her death was mysterious to me until I was “jolted” to my senses. God IS in control.

AUTIONEER’S NOTE: In 2005 Jerry & Anneliese Grogg moved down off the Knob Hill to build their little dream log retirement cabin in the woods. Well, at least that’s the way it started out. Of course, one idea led to another and the result today is one of the most unique properties in Lagrange County. The property includes a relaxing country home, well-maintained outbuildings, and a scenic pond complete with it’s own swan. The land includes woods, wetlands and pastures. The tillable land is almost entirely certified organic.
The Groggs are living in Sturgis, Michigan with their daughter and are offering this property to the public to enjoy and appreciate as much as they have. Don’t miss this opportunity to inspect and consider this dream property for your family.
