Message from Our President We made it. 2021 is here. Ringing in the New Year on December 31st never felt so fulfilling. And although 2021 hasn’t been as new or different as we had hoped (SNOVID-21), we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And as we recognize the oneyear anniversary of the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is much to celebrate and be proud of as a healthcare community: local healthcare organizations coordinated more than ever before, we stepped up to coordinate the massive effort of administering vaccines and managed a large-scale weather disaster, to name a few. You all have shown resilience and courage in the face of major obstacles, both professionally and personally, and I commend you for all you have overcome. The ACHE of North Texas board, committee chairs and volunteers have pivoted to a new normal, offering virtual everything, from virtual education to virtual networking, to even virtual mentor/ mentee meetings. Through it all, we have found a way to stay connected while being miles apart. As we move forward to inperson events later this year, I expect we will retain some level of virtual events because we have heard from you that you like the convenience these events offer. Don’t worry though, we know how important in-person networking and connecting are to you and we all are anxiously awaiting the opportunity, when it is safe to do so. I am filled with optimism as we return to a ‘new normal.’ I am thankful to be given the opportunity to lead the ACHE of North Texas chapter this year and look forward to seeing you - both virtually and in-person - in the coming year. Amanda Thrash, FACHE Vice President of Professional & Support Services Texas Health Plano

Message from Our ACHE Texas – Northern Regent Dearest ACHE Colleagues, I pray this message finds you well. First of all, I would like to thank you all for allowing me to serve as Regent of Texas Northern. I am honored to serve in this capacity and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to represent you in this appointment. There’s much that has been achieved by my incredible predecessor and we will continue on this upward trajectory in upcoming years. Thank you for believing in me. This year has already been one that has been trying for many of us. From the political to the medical, we’ve faced challenges that have caused many of us to wonder “what’s next?” Although we’ve been stretched, we have faith that things will soon improve. We’ve seen many triumphs in the initiative to get COVID vaccinations administered to our communities. We continue to see COVID hospitalizations and deaths decrease in our North Texas facilities and communities. There is now a glimmer of hope at the end of this long, frightening tunnel because of the dedication and vigilance of healthcare professionals like you. Thank you for all that you do for our communities and healthcare organizations. You are greatly appreciated and the world would not survive without each of you doing what you do each day. Thank you. As we continue the journey that is 2021, please remember to take care of yourselves. As healthcare professionals, we are taught to take care of all by giving all. We do this well, but how do we care for ourselves? Do we care for ourselves as well as we care for others or do we see this as “being selfish?” The

most important thing we can do for those who depend on us is to care for ourselves. As one anonymous author states, “you cannot pour from and empty cup.” Simply put, you cannot give what you do not have. If we who have dedicated our lives to the health and well-being of the human race are not mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually whole, we are limited in what we can give to others. Our gifts are depleted and casualties may result if we lack self-care. The verbiage of airline flight attendants resonates in this moment: “Please put your oxygen mask on first before attempting to help others with theirs.” It is not selfish to care for ourselves. Self-care is imperative to ensure those who count on us receive the best that we can possibly give. What is that makes you smile? What do you enjoy? What beloved activities can you safely perform now that will bring you a little joy? Please take time to do some of those activities. Factor in a little time each week to do something for yourselves. You are worth it. I look forward to working with and for you. Until then, be blessed, be safe, and take care of you. Dr. Trinette K. Message from Our ACHE Regent At Large, District 4 healthcare leadership in a number of ways, including through its offering of two online diversity-focused communities, the Asian Healthcare Leaders Community, and the LGBTQ Healthcare Leaders Community. Also, ACHE works with other diversity-focused professional associations through the Better Together collaborative, including the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE), and the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives (NALHE). You can learn more about their collaborative work at the Executive Diversity Career Navigator website (edcnavigator.org).

Dear Colleagues, I am extremely honored to begin my service as Regent-at-Large for ACHE District Four, which includes Texas, my home state of Missouri, as well as Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. The Regent-at-Large role is a bit unique in ACHE’s leadership structure as there are only six positions throughout the nation–one for each ACHE district. The role was created to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in healthcare leadership. Given the focus of the Regent-atLarge role, I wanted to share a bit of my background as it relates to DEI. As a Black member of the gender and sexual minority community, a millennial, and as a male who entered healthcare leadership through nursing, diversity and inclusion is literally part of everything that I do. Additionally, my service to ACHE as a former chapter leader, national faculty member, and as the 2020-2021 Chair of the ACHE LGBTQ Healthcare Leaders Community, has allowed me to support DEI initiatives at local, regional, and national levels. This is an exciting time for DEI at ACHE and for the field of healthcare leadership. Our 2021 Congress on Healthcare Leadership kicked off with an important message from ACHE Gold Medal Recipient, Chuck Stokes, FACHE, who discussed that we must not only ensure that diverse voices are present at decision-making tables, but that they are heard, valued, and equitably integrated into the decisions that are made in healthcare organizations. ACHE is supporting diverse voices in

I look forward to connecting with you and working with everyone in the North Texas Chapter and ACHE District Four to continue to advance DEI in healthcare leadership. It is everyone’s responsibility to create environments where all people can experience belonging and truly thrive. MENTORSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE ACHE is dedicated to helping leaders develop their skills and their careers, through education, networking and building strong relationships across the healthcare administration profession. ACHENTX’s Mentorship Committee connects seasoned leaders with early careerists to help guide and develop the skills and experiences to help them realize their potential. New this year is the University of Texas - Dallas (UTD) mentorship program, where graduate student mentees selected by the Master of Healthcare Management Program Director have been matched with mentors from the Life Fellows Members of the chapter. The pilot started on January 1 and will conclude April 30, 2021. There are six student mentee/ LFACHE mentor teams, with all the mentors having served as past Mentorship Program mentors. The pilot follows the standing Chapter Mentorship Program protocols. The Mentorship Committee will complete a mid-session assessment and end-of-program assessment in conjunction with the UDT/MHA, Undergraduate Academic Director for recommendations and considerations for possible future similar activity by the Committee and ultimately the ACHENTX Chapter Board. Also new this year, the Life Fellows Committee is working with the Mentorship Program Committee to provide mentors for a pilot program with UTD. The pilot is focused on mentoring a professor-selected group of current Healthcare Administration graduate or undergraduate students to support their professional growth and development. If you are considering participating in the Mentorship Program next year, here are some important dates to remember:

ABOUT THOSE FACE-TO-FACE CREDITS…. “I was up for re-certification in 2021. Being a planner, I was a little nervous about having enough face-to-face credits. Twelve face-to-face credits aren’t normally difficult to attain in two years. But, of course, this is a strange time. So, around May 2020, I just started checking ACHE national and ACHE of North Texas for virtual face-to-face opportunities. Our chapter evolved quickly with the times and offered quite a few virtual face-to-face credit events. It was fun to participate in them with local healthcare executives and it was my least expensive re-certification ever! I think I’m on my third or fourth re-cert…and the Continuing Ed usually runs close to $1200 for sessions plus travel expenses. While it is worth every penny, 12 hours of face-to-face can get expensive. We are so fortunate to have a lot of local chapter events that offer high quality, inexpensive face-to-face programming. The highlight of my recent recert was seeing Daniela Decell and Cindy Schamp on a panel together. We are incredibly lucky to have two awesome female CEOs running our hospitals in Irving!” Amanda Brummitt, FACHE ACHENTX member

MARCH HEALTHCARE MADNESS:

64th Annual Congress

on Healthcare Leadership Goes Virtual

Mid-March is traditionally the time when thousands of healthcare executives make the annual pilgrimage to Chicago to attend ACHE’s Congress on Healthcare Leadership. But, as we all know, COVID-19 has turned tradition on its head. So, when I registered for this year’s virtual Congress, I was intrigued and slightly skeptical. Already suffering from Zoom, Teams and Web-ex meeting exhaustion, I couldn’t imagine sitting in front of my laptop for three and one-half days watching keynote addresses, general sessions, and concurrent sessions. But, from the moment the opening session speaker appeared on the screen, I knew I had made a wise investment of my time and resources. More about the opening session later. Attending Congress in person is exhilarating, informative, motivating, and slightly overwhelming. While the networking opportunities and educational sessions are worth the registration price, the cost of travel, lodging, and food can add up. And for many of us, that’s significant since we, not our employers, are footing the bill. This year, I thought the registration price was a bargain and apparently so did many others. More than 9,000 healthcare leaders from across the country attended this year’s virtual Congress.

“In over 40 years of attending conferences, I can truly say this was probably the best opening session I’ve ever experienced.”

Several themes were central to this year’s event – innovation, digital transformation, and diversity and inclusion. A highlight of Congress was the “Fireside Chat with Dr. Anthony Fauci,” who presented a behind-the-scenes look at the battle against COVID-19, and where we are today.

Back to the opening session – “Unleashing the Power of Innovation to Impact Health.” In over 40 years of attending conferences, I can truly say this was probably the best opening session I’ve ever experienced. Featuring a company called Zipline (not the cable that dangles precariously over the jungle), Keller Rinaudo, co-founder and CEO, took participants on a jaw-dropping real-time Zoom journey to the company’s drone base in Rawanda. Zipline’s stated mission is to provide every human on Earth with instant access to vital medical supplies using the latest drone technology. The company has a contract with the government of Rawanda to provide blood and medical supplies to its network of hospitals and clinics located throughout the country.

The base’s manager demonstrated how drones are stored, assembled, stocked with the requested medical supplies attached to a paper parachute, launched, GPS-guided to their destination, deliver their payload, and return to base where they are captured, cleaned, checked and readied for their next delivery destination. Turnaround time from supply request to launch averages an astounding five minutes. Participants were immersed in the entire experience, feeling the emotional high from such a lifesaving, innovative venture. Zipline built a second base in Rawanda to better cover the entire country and it has secured a contract with the government of neighboring Ghana to begin delivering COVID-19 vaccine. You can check out Zipline here. Several sessions examined the rapid adoption of digital health, especially tele-health, propelled by the pandemic. While hospitals are seeing a gradual decline in the number of virtual visits as the country begins to adapt to a new normal of a vaccinated population, most of the industry experts agreed that telehealth is on the cutting edge of the at-home or in-home care trend and will continue to be an important component of healthcare delivery going forward. Finally, a tip of the hat to ACHENTX’s own Dr. Stephan Davis, past chair of ACHE’s Diversity and Inclusion Forum.

Stephan, DNP, FACHE, MHA Director and Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, was a co-presenter of “Best Practices of LGBTQ+ Inclusion: Lessons Learned from Leaders in Healthcare Equality.” Stephan’s copresenter was Kenneth White, PhD, RN, FACHE, UVA Health Professor of Nursing Emeritus, University of Virginia, a long-time LGBTQ+ healthcare activist. The session looked at how healthcare organizations were using, if at all, the Human Rights Campaign Healthcare Equality Index, HRC’s benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare organizations based on practices related to diversity and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ patient population and members of the healthcare workforce. Stephan and Kenneth’s presentation featured objective, thoughtprovoking examples of best practices used by some of the country’s leading healthcare organizations. It also clearly showed that the diversity and inclusion journey has just begun for hospitals and health systems who still have a long way to go to score 100% on the HRC HEI. Participants were highly engaged and chat comments indicated the session presented information that was valuable and would be used by attendees at their own organizations. Several other topics covered at virtual Congress are worth noting. A senior executive from Walmart explained how the company is expanding its focus on superior employee health through direct provider relationships with high-quality, cost-effective providers. The company has launched an online physician rating service for employees based on specific criteria related to quality outcomes and cost. Walmart has launched the service in a few markets including Dallas-Fort Worth. The current and future state of the healthcare

landscape was front and center in a session featuring the CEOs of the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, and America’s Health Insurance Plans. Amy Walter, national editor of the Cook Political Report took an in-depth look at the politics of healthcare. Finally, a distinguished panel of healthcare executives from some of America’s leading hospitals and health systems discussed “Tackling COVID-19 From the Ground Up - Moving Towards a Large-Scale National Strategy.” Congratulations to the organizers and IT support staff who were responsible for this superior learning experience. Job well done! I know there were several ACHENTX members who attended virtual Congress. We’d like to know your thoughts about this year’s event. Tom Peck, FACHE

Student Case Competition Builds the Next Generation of Leaders The ACHE Student Council is a distinctive committee for the North Texas Chapter. These young and upcoming professionals are active in many of the other committees in the chapter, but one of their most unique contributions to the chapter is the Student Case Competition. Over the years, the case competition has been an event that students genuinely look forward to because of the experience and opportunities awarded.

competition requires the students to work together as teams, an important quality in healthcare organizations. While in years past, the competition was held live, including multiple teams from other states, in 2020 the chapter successfully adapted the format of the competition to meet virtually. The 2020 competition included:

The case competition provides students with exposure to healthcare professionals and potential employers, offering them opportunities to network with recruiters, alumni, professors and healthcare executives. The competition simulates reality in the healthcare environment where several qualified groups must innovate to distinguish themselves. And of course, the

· Two rounds · Five universities, · Twenty-five student participants · Three distinguished judges · Professional coaches

Paridhi Sheth is an exemplar of the importance of this competition. She is the chair of the ACHENTX Student council committee, alumni of the University of North Texas Health Science Center MHA program, and a current student at the University of Texas at Austin MSBA program. She has participated in the competition twice and has gained an immense amount of industry exposure and many marketable skills. “I have participated in various case competitions through which I have fostered some of the motivational benefits of the competition, and I felt that the challenge accurately simulated my critical thinking and decision-making process.”, said Paridhi.

The ACHENTX Student Council The Student Council was established when forward-thinking MHA students engaged others in the inaugural ‘Leading Change in Healthcare’ summit, which met in January 2020. Paridhi Sheth came up with the big idea that is paying big dividends for healthcare administration students of DFW. Her concept was to partner with ACHENTX and bring students together from other universities as part of an event planning and community engagement experience, to develop a program for networking with and learning from established, successful professionals in the local healthcare industry. From this, the motto of the ACHENTX Student Council committee arose, ‘For Students, By Students’.

Some of her key takeaways include: · Being part of a team allows a single unit to achieve a common goal. · Case competition allows students to showcase their professionalism through organization and presentation. · The competition provides an opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge gained professionally and academically. · The case competition allows a student to experience an “executive” role in decision making.

The council worked to organize six industry events and two Lean Six Sigma certification courses, each a resounding success. After recognizing the demand for more events like as the case competition, the Student Council advisors, Dr. Valerie Johnston and Dr. Keith Thurgood, representatives of the ACHENTX board, combined efforts and founded the Student Council committee in May 2020 to further efforts on student career enhancement opportunities. It is the vision of the Student Council to instill commitments of compassion, respect, integrity, excellence, and justice within the student members for further dissemination into the business of healthcare. ACHE North Texas is dedicated to broadening members’ perspectives on the business of healthcare and the career possibilities in the field, by providing opportunities to explore the industry academically and to engage healthcare professionals directly. For students, by students. The current executive board consists of students from six local universities (UT Arlington, UNT Health Sciences Center, UT Dallas, TWU, TCU and UNT). Looking ahead, the council plans to continue the teachings and the events established this year and to gauge the student and professional market environment to introduce new events.
