Tommy’s scoops Salon Design of the Year award
Tommy’s Hair Company was founded in Ruthin by Tommy and Esther van der Veken, originally from the Netherlands, and have established themselves as the must-visit salons in North Wales.
With two salons located in Ruthin and Llandudno, each is very different and has been designed to provide a high end salon but with a warm, welcoming atmosphere because of the team, embracing the ‘Tommy’s Experience’. Inspired by Tommy and Esther’s Dutch heritage, their commitment to salon excellence has seen them win a multitude of awards including the British Hairdressing Business Awards, Creative Head Most Wanted Awards as well as a host of regional and international awards.
2002 saw the opening of Tommy’s first salon, on the square
in Ruthin – a momentous occasion. Upon opening the very first Tommy’s salon, the duo had no brand, no logo and started
from scratch, not knowing anyone in the area or industry. Fast forward 18 months the duo quickly grew out of the space and with a three month waiting list, moved into a bigger location on the other side of town, in a converted Mill House – at the time the largest salon space within Wales. At this stage, business was growing at an incredibly fast rate, Esther and Tommy began putting every effort and focus into building a strong and loyal team and brand – the Tommy’s Hair Company was born, it was time for the journey to begin. A large and welcoming environment, Tommy’s Ruthin boasts a floating mezzanine floor
with double height ceilings that radiate light and space. With an ever-growing reputation Tommy’s opened their Llandudno salon in 2011. Situated in the fashionable seaside resort town, this salon is the largest Tommy’s salon to date and has become extremely popular with the residents of North Wales.
With over 100 award wins and finalist statuses, recognising
their creative vision and successful business expertise, Tommy’s have achieved a reputation as one of the most successful and exciting salon groups with Wales and the South. Under the expert leadership of Tommy and Esther, Tommy’s have initiated their own modern training facilities for hairdressers in the region.
Over the years they have worked tirelessly to promote and excel industry standards for their team, their guests and the hairdressing industry as a whole. Through creative photographic work, brand campaigns and partnerships, education and continual career support as well as their loyalty to their local regions, the duo has taken the business to new heights, driving the business through recessions and pandemics and coming out the other side every time.
Following a devastating flood in January of 2021, Tommy’s along
with many other neighbouring businesses were sadly left with a trail of destruction following flash flooding throughout the
town centre from Storm Christophe, leaving the salon under a large amount of water. Once assessed, Esther and Tommy had to fully renovate the salon, taking the interior back to the bare brick and rebuilding what has been their pride and joy for 16 years, unveiling a fabulous, newly designed salon in June 2021.
Fast forward to 2022, Tommy’s Hair Company is thriving and working continuously to provide their guests with the most exceptional skills and services, setting the benchmark for the wider hairdressing industry. As a small, local business the team are continually working to provide upmarket services to their guests in the comfort of their home towns of Llandudno and Ruthin. As the hairdressing industry has opened up once again following a hiatus, Tommy’s took the decision to put every effort into brand recognition, and were awarded the title of Salon Design of the Year at the 2022 Salon Business Awards. The Salon Business Awards are an industry wide awards recognising the hard work, passion and commitment of those within the hairdressing industry and their businesses, of which continue to allow the craft to thrive.
With both salons fully open and the team thriving on their latest success, Tommy’s Hair Company are once again working hard towards making every guest happy and spreading the Tommy’s feel good experience. The team are also finalists
within the 2022 British Hairdressing Business Awards within the Salon Design category and will find out the results at a
glittering awards ceremony in London later this month. n
