DR. GARY LEE
SPEARS
PRESIDENT u 9TH YEAR
Dr. Gary Lee Spears is in his ninth academic year as president of Northwest Mississippi Community College. While he is proud of all the accomplishments the college has achieved during his tenure as president, he is particularly proud of the Building on Tradition campaign in which he has played a major role. Students and visitors to the main campus in Senatobia can see evidence of the college’s ongoing building campaign with the recent completions of Tate Hall, McLendon Student Union, Division of Nursing Building and Ranger Outdoor Complex. You can’t spend more than a few minutes with Dr. Spears before you see that his love of the college runs deep. In 2007, Dr. Spears was named Alumnus of the Year by the Northwest Alumni Association and recognized during Homecoming festivities. Prior to being named president July 1, 2005, Dr. Spears served as registrar and director of Admissions and Records for 25 years. A native of Eudora in DeSoto County, Dr. Spears has held positions at the college including instructor, vocational counselor, assistant to the DeSoto Center director and vice president for Student Affairs. Dr. Spears is a graduate of Hernando High School. He earned an Associate of Applied Science degree and an Associate of Education degree from Northwest. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in social science and a master’s degree in counseling from Delta State University. In 1991, Dr. Spears earned a doctorate in educational leadership at the University of Mississippi, where he has taught courses in higher education as an adjunct instructor. His profound love for Northwest inspired him to write a history of the college for his doctoral dissertation. He began his career in education at Leland Consolidated School District, where he taught American history while working on his master’s degree. He came to Northwest in 1975. Dr. Spears is a past president of the Senatobia Rotary Club, where he was honored as a prestigious Paul Harris Fellow, and has been a board member of the Tate County Economic Development Foundation. The Northwest Foundation Board of Directors, his wife, Marilyn, and friends of the college created the Dr. Gary Lee Spears Endowed Scholarship in May 2011 for his lifelong dedication to education and the college. In May 2010 the Spears family joined the college in celebrating the dedication of the Marilyn R. Spears Building for the Early Childhood Education Technology program, named for Northwest First Lady Marilyn Spears, a Northwest graduate who retired from the college in spring 2005 after 25 years as an instructor in that program.
Dr. and Mrs. Spears have two adult sons, Jared and Daniel, who are also Northwest graduates. Jared graduated from Delta State and earned a Master of Fine Arts terminal degree at The University of Mississippi. A member of the UM faculty, Jared is a musician and sculptor outside of the university and resides in Taylor. Daniel also completed a bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss. He is a recreation therapist with the North Mississippi Regional Center and a musician. He and his wife, Julie, an architect with Julie Spears Architecture, live in Oxford and have two sons—Jack, 1, and Samuel, born August 13. The Spears family has lived in Tate County for 37 years and are active members of the First Baptist Church in Senatobia. They moved into the college’s President’s Home on the Senatobia campus in March of 2009.

Question & Answer
with Hunter Lawrence BY KEVIN MALONEY
Q. What was it like playing for South Panola? A. We were national champions my sophomore year and also won a pair of state championships. I learned what it took to win and how to play the game to the best of my ability. Q. What made you choose Northwest out of high school? A. They had a winning program, it was close to home and I liked the staff who recruited me. Q. What are your personal & team goals for 2013? A. I plan to earn a Division I scholarship and want to do my best for the team, play hard and play my position. Q. How do you think the Coahoma win will get us going? A. It helped out our team a lot. It’s given us a little push to work harder and practice harder. I really feel the momentum will help us out this week against Northeast. Q. What game are you looking forward to the most? A. East Mississippi. We gave them a good run for their money last year and want to get the win. Q. You’ve spent time at fullback, tight end and on the offensive line in the spring/fall? A. At the beginning of the year, the new staff tried me at guard for a little bit and I enjoyed it. But I moved back to fullback and am really comfortable in that role. Q. What Division I schools have shown interest in you? A. Auburn, Middle Tennessee State, UAB, Delta State and Northwestern State.

Question & Answer
with Tarow Barney BY KEVIN MALONEY
Q. How long have you been playing football? A. My asthma kept me from playing until my senior year. I always went out for the team (Bainbridge, Ga.) but couldn’t make it through summer workouts because of my asthma. Q. What made you choose Northwest out of high school? A. I was going to sign with South Alabama, but didn’t have the grades, so they placed me here. Q. How different is it this year with a new staff? A. It’s a lot different. This staff puts a lot more into it and we’re learning a lot more. Q. What are your individual and team goals for 2013? A. To be either first or second on the team in tackles and lead the team in tackles-for-loss and sacks. As a team, to win the north division. Q. What do you like to do for fun in your free time? A. Just hang out with my teammates, watch TV and play NCAA14 and Call of Duty on XBox. Q. What Division I schools have shown interest in you? A. Southern Mississippi, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy, UCF, UAB, UT-Martin, Arkansas State, South Alabama and Bethune-Cookman. Q. Your mother is originally from Africa. What’s that like?
A. Yeah, she moved over here in 1994 and I hear a lot about their civil wars and how they lived through it.

LaPlante, Rangers Pick Up First Win of 2013 at Coahoma 38-23 From NWCCRANGERS.com • September 12, 2013 CLARKSDALE – Northwest had its best offensive output of the season and held Coahoma to just 37 yards in the second half as they picked up their first win of the season, 38-23, on Thursday night at James E. Miller Stadium. Northwest improved to 37-2 all-time against the Tigers and 37-7 in north division play in its last 44 games. Brad LaPlante also picked up his first career win with the Rangers as they went to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the north. Coahoma fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the north. “It was a great team victory and I’m very proud of our staff,” LaPlante said. “But we still had to battle some adversity with a few injuries. We had a great defensive second half, a strong running game and great performance by Damian Baker and our entire offense.” Coahoma took the opening drive of the game 82 yards on 13 plays over 6:07 and quickly took a 7-0 lead when Quaintavous Peterson connected with Kshun Evans for a 26-yard touchdown on 4th-and-8. It took exactly 28 seconds for the Rangers to respond, as Marcel Newson took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a score, the 11th-longest return in single-game history. Northwest made it 14-7 on its next possession after forcing a three-and-out, driving 65 yards on just two plays, aided by three Tiger penalties. Baker capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, his first of three on the night. Josh Hamilton opened the drive with a 35-yard reception to put the Rangers in scoring position. Coahoma tied it at 14-14 on its second drive of the second quarter, as Peterson connected with Evans for a second time from 22 yards out. Again, it took just one play for Northwest to respond, with Baker racing 83 yards for a touchdown to put the Rangers back on top 21-14. The 83-yard run is the 7th-longest in single-game history. After Coahoma pulled it within 21-17 on Cody Spears’ 35-yard field goal, Northwest put together its best drive of the night to take a 28-17 lead at the half. The drive was 10 plays, 90 yards over 3:07. Baker’s 70-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the third gave Northwest a 35-17 lead and a little breathing room before Coahoma scored midway through the quarter to make it 35-23 Rangers after three. Boone Frederick connected on a 32-yard field goal to start the fourth and cap the scoring. Northwest outgained Coahoma 395-263 on the night, paced by Baker’s 16 carries for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Karsten Miller was 16-for-23 for 185 yards and a TD and connected with seven different receivers on the night. D’Montrise Swinney led the way with five grabs for 69 yards and a score. Defensively, Terrell White and Joshua Barry had eight tackles apiece, while Joseph Phillips added seven. Barry also added 2.5 tackles-for-loss, a half a sack, a forced fumble and an interception. Northwest will try and build on the momentum next Thursday night, welcoming Northeast (1-2, 1-0) to Senatobia for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. The game is tabbed as an Armed Forces Appreciation Game.

Freshman Marcel Newson (Coldwater) had five tackles and a 91-yard kick return for a touchdown against Coahoma. The return was the 11th longest in school history and longest for the team since 2005.

Northwest and Northeast Meet for 54th Time
Freshmen Alec Michael (left) and Demetrius Farmer (right) take down the quarterback. The Ranger defense is allowing just 274.7 yards per game through the first three weeks.
The fifth-oldest series in Northwest football history, the Rangers and Tigers will meet for a 54th time Thursday. Northwest leads the all-time series 35-16-2 and has won six of the previous seven meetings. The series has been tight the past few years, with four of the last six being decided by a touchdown or less. Both teams are coming off their first victories of the 2013 season, with the Rangers winning 38-23 at Coahoma and Northeast edging Holmes, 17-14, and are looking to stay atop the north division standings. Northwest escaped with a 19-13 win in Booneville last year and used four Chase Carpenter field goals and a game-saving interception by Randolph Williams in the final seconds. The game turned into a defensive battle, with neither team gaining over 200 yards. Northwest was held to a season-low 194 yards of total offense while Northeast managed just 167. This year’s matchup is expected to be another good one in the rivalry, with Northwest boasting the fifth-best defense in the state at 274.7 yards-per-game and Northeast having the sixth-best offense in the state. Special teams, as always, could play a major factor.

BRAD
LaPLANTE
HEAD COACH u 1ST YEAR
Brad LaPlante was named the 28th head football coach in Northwest history on January 17, 2013. "I want to thank Dr. Spears, Cameron Blount and the entire search committee for having the faith in me to lead this program," LaPlante said. "For my wife and two children, this is a great community and a great place in our lives to be right now." LaPlante, 35, is the youngest known head coach in the program's 83-year history and will be formally introduced next week at a press conference in Senatobia. He will immediately hit the recruiting trail with national signing day less than a month away. “We're excited to start a new era of football under coach LaPlante,” third-year athletic director Cameron Blount said. “His work ethic and past success speaks for itself. It's a great opportunity for our kids to excel with the plan coach has for his players moving to the next level. He's come from a winning program at Rochester and we hope that translates to success at Northwest and in the MACJC.” LaPlante spent last season at Manvel High School as the special teams coordinator/defensive line coach and prior to that spent a year at Alvin HS where he served as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
10
Prior to a short stint in the Texas high school ranks, LaPlante spent 11 seasons at NJCAA Division III Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) from 1999-2002 and 2004-10. He spent his first two seasons as the offensive line coach and his second two as the cooffensive coordinator before being named the head coach in 2004. LaPlante had a cumulative head coaching record of 64-16 (53-10 conference record, 10-2 playoff record) from 2004-10 and led RCTC to four state championships in six appearances, five NJCAA bowl games and the 2007 NJCAA Division III National Championship. "It's going to be great to get back to college football and build those relationships again," LaPlante said. "I think that this is one of the premier jobs in the nation and it has a great history. As a staff we want to continue to build on that." During his tenure at Rochester, he coached 114 All-Division players, 35 All-Region players and 18 football All-Americans. He was Region XIII Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2010. In 2007, he received the Rochester Area Sports Commission "Coach of the Year'' award. LaPlante also served as the men's athletic coordinator since 2008 and coordinated intramural athletics at the college. A former All-State player from Chatfield, Minn., LaPlante played center for RCTC in 1997 and 1998, earning all-conference, all-state and all-region honors. Both years, the Yellowjackets were state champions and earned bowl games in New York and Iowa. LaPlante earned his associate's degree from RCTC, bachelor's degree from Winona State University and his master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He is married to the former Christie Bronte and the couple has two children, Carson (7) and Cashton (6). LaPlante replaces Ricky Woods who compiled a 35-13 record (24-6 north division) in five seasons with two north division titles, two runner-up finishes and the school's first bowl win in 20 years.
Coaching Experience 2012: Manvel High School (Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Line) 2011: Alvin High School (Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line) 2004-10: Rochester Community and Technical College (Head Coach) 1999-02: Rochester Community and Technical College (Co-Off. Coordinator/OL)
Question & Answer with Brad LaPlante entering the 2013 season Once again we’re preseason ranked. We are unranked in the NJCAA Poll, but come in at No. 21 by JCGridiron.com. “It’s just awesome that we have so many good teams in this league. When you add in the NJCAA and California teams, that’s a pretty good list to be on. It’s a credit to this fine program and its history.” Talk about the spring and battling the weather. “We started on April 1, and the weather was the biggest issue during the spring. To get quality practices, whether they were in the gym or on the grass, was difficult. We only had a handful of actual grass practices to work with.” Talk about the fall. “We are way tougher, more aggressive and got more plays in than we did in spring ball. I think our quarterbacks are coming along and we’re athletic at the receiver and running back positions. We have some guys on the defensive line that are very explosive, while the secondary is very athletic and explosive. Things are looking up and up for the Rangers.” Entering the season, tell me about some guys that may standout. “Quarteback Karsten Miller and running back Damian Baker have showed a lot of leadership, poise and technique. Kendall Carr and Tarow Barney on the defensive line have showed a lot of great extension and good explosiveness, while Chris Fox and Terrell White have looked good in the secondary. White is the most aggressive player we have on defense and is always flying around on every play.”
We signed 37 players on National Signing Day and only have about a dozen players returning. Talk about the youth of this team. “We only had 12 players from last years roster to work with and have a lot of youth. We had a few tryouts and will have to work to get to our final 55-man roster and the additional redshirts that we’re given. As the year progresses, we hope to show the brand of football that we’re going to play. With so many new kids, you may not see that in Week 1, but we’re certainly excited to get started.” How much pressure do you feel coming in to win in your first season? “We’re just coming in here to work and demand a lot from each other as a staff. We want to do things right and we’re going to hold our players accountable. We want them to have a future after Northwest and that’s why we have study tables and grade checks. If you’re doing things right, there’s no way that success can’t happen.” On challenging the fans to come out with five home games this year. “It’s for the kids. When you take the rules in our league with just eight out-ofstaters, a majority of our roster is in-state kids. There’s no reason to not come out and support our Mississippi kids. There are some tough games against some tough opponents, but we’re excited to have five out of those nine in Senatobia. We’re going to have a new defense, new offense and a different look on special teams. ”

The co-ed squad supports the college’s athletic teams while boosting fan support and having fun. They represent Northwest at football and basketball games and travel to bowl games and tournaments around the nation. Although they are non-competitive, certain requirements must be met at tryouts held each spring.
For more information contact: Liesl D. Davenport, Cheer Sponsor Work: (662) 562-3899 E-mail: ldavenport@northwestms.edu
Members must be proficient in stunting, motions, toe touches and cheering, maintain a certain fitness level and receive a positive recommendation from their most recent cheer sponsor.
