Matthew Ross Extended Education Instructor Director, Botanic Garden at Historic Barnes Park

On The Cover

Matthew Ross began gardening at age 3, growing chives at his late grandmother’s house in Detroit. When he returned home and began grazing the front lawn, he told his parents, “at Grandma’s house we eat the plants.” And so began his lifelong learning adventure, beginning with learning the difference between chives and turfgrass.

Many years later, Matthew now serves as the Executive Director at The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park.

We are thrilled to add Matthew’s knowledge and passion for the natural world to our offering of Fall gardening courses (p.33).

Samurai Martial Arts

Nami Ryu Aiki Heiho is a martial arts system that consists of unarmed techniques (aiki-jujutsu) taken directly from the study of Japanese sword arts (kenjutsu and iaijutsu) and knife arts (tantojutsu). Nami Ryu principles and techniques originated in ancient martial arts (bujutsu) and strategies (heiho, or hyoho) that were exclusively used by the samurai. These principles also apply to the study of jujutsu. Jujutsu comes from the study of the sword; both use the same “operating system.” Our curriculum covers a wide range of bugei (Japanese martial arts), which encompass skills that were once necessary for the samurai warrior in the performance of their martial duties.

Think of it - you go where you want, when you want, eat what you want, stay where you want, go and stop when you want. Do you see a pattern here? A fun bonus is meeting people when you are not always engaged with a person you are travelling with. The class will cover the logistics of solo travel whether for a day or a few weeks in a foreign country! Safety, frugality, practicality, and many starting ideas will be shared.

Our Supreme Court: Should We be Worried? NEW!

Public trust and confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court and its “legitimacy” has been seriously eroded in the last ten to twenty years. Is there any basis for that loss of confdence? This Court has been accused of everything from “weaponizing the First Amendment to achieve a particular political agenda” to being “bought” by wealthy “donors” who want to see more politically conservative decisions from the Court on cultural issues, federal regulatory issues, corporate and business interests of various types, etc. Is that a fair and objective criticism or simply “sour grapes” by those who disagree with the Court’s decisions of late? What is the difference between “political conservatism” and “judicial conservatism” and what might be fair and objective criteria for deciding whether a court is judicially conservative or a more “activist” court. What is the “shadow docket” and what role, if any, does it play in the overall decisions of the Court? How does the Court decide which cases it will hear out of the thousands of requests it receives every year? How do some of these decisions affect us? These questions and issues, as well as key cases demonstrating some of these principles (such as Citizens United, Dobbs, and others), will be covered in this two-part class on this timely and very important topic that should lead to interesting class discussions and a better understanding of the Court.

Learn & Play Contemporary Tabletop Games NEW!

We are living during a renaissance of tabletop games: thousands are published each year. If you have enjoyed a game of Monopoly, Risk, or Yahtzee (and even if you haven’t!), then you owe it to yourself to try some newer board games that add depth, unique strategies, thematic elements, and interesting interactions. At each session, we’ll briefly talk about an aspect of how tabletop games work and have evolved, then learn and play a recent title. At the first session, we will decide what sort of games we’ll explore and play some introductory games. For future sessions, possible games to learn and play include Flash Point: Fire Rescue, a cooperative game where each player is a frefghter trying to rescue victims from a burning house; Parks, a game of visiting national parks by collecting experiences; Concordia, an economic game set in the ancient Roman Mediterranean; and Wingspan, a card game of building strong bird habitats. Each session will last 3 hours and is intended for interested teens and adults.

Certifed Nurse Aide

WORK & CAREER student spotlight

Become a Certified Nurse Aide! A certified nurse aide, or CNA, helps patients or residents with healthcare needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Tasks include, but are not limited to, personal care, monitoring vital signs, setting up meal trays, feeding, making beds, turning bed-ridden residents, and bringing residents to therapy. Since CNAs have daily contact with patients, they are the nurses’ eyes and ears, gathering vital information about the patients’ conditions. A CNA’s workload can become intense and fast-paced, but the human contact and ability to help those in medical need can be very rewarding. A desire to help people and compassion for residents is essential.
