BUILD INNOVATION

Josh Hart, northern Michigan native, earned his bachelors degree from The University of Olivet and embarked on a 15-year journey in the Insurance industry. In 2019, he settled in Traverse City, where he is establishing deep roots in the community.

Like many, prompted by the pandemic, Josh reevaluated his career path. He pursued his entrepreneurial ambitions by founding Riley’s Candles and the “Riley Foundation,” both named in honor of his beloved 15-year-old Beagle, Riley.

The overarching mission of these organizations is to raise funds for dogs in need of life-saving surgeries, who might otherwise face euthanasia due to financial constraints.

Beyond his commitment to the welfare of animals, Josh is fervently dedicated to nurturing startups and contributing to the entrepreneurial ecosystem here in Traverse City.

For more on Josh & Riley’s story, see page 29.

Dear Learners,

As autumn paints the world in vibrant hues, we welcome you to a season of learning and introspection. For adults, try your hand at Painting With Acrylics: Autumn Leaves & Colors (pg. 5). To cultivate creativity for kids, try our new after school program, Art Ventures (pg. 49).

Together, we’ll expand our thinking and understanding with classes like Intro to AI & Prompts for GenAI (pg. 46) and Exploring the World Through Celebrations (pg. 25). Our Supreme Court: Should We Be Worried?

Public trust and confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court and its “legitimacy” has been seriously eroded in the last ten to twenty years. Is there any basis for that loss of confdence? This Court has been accused of everything from “weaponizing the First Amendment to achieve a particular political agenda” to being “bought” by wealthy “donors” who want to see more politically conservative decisions from the Court on cultural issues, federal regulatory issues, corporate and business interests of various types, etc. Is that a fair and objective criticism or simply “sour grapes” by those who disagree with the Court’s decisions of late? What is the difference between “political conservatism” and “judicial conservatism” and what might be fair and objective criteria for deciding whether a court is judicially conservative or a more “activist” court. What is the “shadow docket” and what role, if any, does it play in the overall decisions of the Court? How does the Court decide which cases it will hear out of the thousands of requests it receives every year? How do some of these decisions afect us? Key cases demonstrating some of these principles (such as Citizens United, Dobbs, and others) will be covered on this timely and topic that should lead to interesting class discussions and a better understanding of the Court. Hamas’ October 7, 2024, attack on Israeli civilians and Israel’s devastating response have destabilized the region. Israeli forces have efectively defeated most of Hamas’ military forces but not Hamas’ political hold over Gaza and parts of the West Bank. The current administration initially embraced Netanyahu but has since pressed for a ceasefire without demanding Hamas’ removal. The current administration also successfully pushed Congress to approve substantial new military aid and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians. Former President Trump’s position on Israel is not clear, but he made several pro-Israel decisions while in power. The Origin & Meaning of the Second Amendment NEW!

The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” That deceptively simple twenty-seven word sentence has become the source of much controversy. Is the “right” being protected an individual right or a community right? Does it have to do with personal self-defense, or does it only deal with membership in a militia? What is the significance of the militia clause and what does “well regulated” mean in this context? Does “bear arms” mean to carry a weapon in public, or does it have a narrower, military meaning? What role do policy considerations such as public safety play? Explore colonial and early U.S. history surrounding gun ownership and regulation and the adoption of the Second Amendment. And, we’ll discuss the most important subsequent laws and judicial decisions dealing with guns and the Second Amendment to see how the amendment has been interpreted over the years. Whether your opinion on the Second Amendment changes as a result of this course or not, you will gain a deeper understanding of the issues and arguments involved and of the pertinent history and law.

MEET THE TEACHER

DAVID ABEEL

David Abeel, retired from a career in social work, spends 7 days a week in his wood shop crafting Windsor furniture and preparing for chairmaking classes nationwide.

Seeking an artistic passion two decades ago, he discovered “How To Make a Windsor Chair” by Mike Dunbar. He shares, “This affordable, space-efficient craft blended artistry with practicality, sparking his quest ‘for the perfect chair’ —well-engineered, proportioned, portable, and above all, comfortable.” Though perfection remains elusive, each creation improves.

“My perfect chair? It’s the one I’m crafting today!” David laughs. Join him in his journey at one of his classes this Fall.
