Brian and Cristin Hosmer have deep roots in northern Michigan’s wine industry. Brian is a winemaker at several local wineries, and Cristin serves as the Viticulture Program Coordinator for NMC and Michigan State University’s Institute of Agricultural Technology.
The local wine industry is of significant importance to many. On the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas combined, there are more than 50 of Michigan’s 140 total wineries. We’re pleased to showcase some of our local and regional bounty in this winter’s lineup of wine tasting and culinary classes, right here at NMC.
New this winter, wine tasting classes will now be held at the tasting bar in Lobdell’s Restaurant, overlooking beautiful West Bay! Enjoy a wine tasting experience with a partner, parent, or friend this winter.

Learn together! Partners, friends, or creative teens who like to work with your hands - this class is for you. Make it a couples date or a friends activity! Or, teens bring an adult with you to create a project together. Say “hello” to curvy edges and corners in your hallway or living room. Join David for two days of creative woodworking to turn a natural-edged slab of cherry, walnut, or maple into a beautiful bench. A practical addition to the back hallway or foot of your bed. Leave behind the predictability of the big box store to work with a variety of natural shapes, colors, and curves. Choose from wood slabs ranging from 8-14” wide and 24-36” long. Expect curves, color, pattern, and wavy edges. Many of these slabs will be from the outer edge of the log where bugs and bacteria have been hard at work making unique colors and excavations. All turnings for legs and stretchers will be provided. Choose from cherry, walnut, or ambrosia maple. All students will take home a completed bench that is glued-up, leveled, and ready for paint or clear finish at home. Teens and first-time woodworkers are especially welcome! Participants under the age of 20 will enjoy a $100 discount on materials and prep. Class cost is for two people.

The o ination Method NEW!
Intrigued by the potential to learn a new knitting method? Combined knitting or combination knitting is a knitting method that combines elements of Eastern-style knitting techniques with the Western knitting techniques. Join expert knitting instructor Lindy Barnes to learn the reasons to use this stitch, including her favorite- it can help you firm up your ribbing without having to change your needle size. It’s suitable for flat stockinette stitch work (knit one side and purl the other side), and it’s physically easier to form purl stitches with less hand motion. It can eliminate wide purl stitches that happen after a knit stitch. It can affect your gauge and allow you to get more stitches and rows per inch. Combination knitting will make all of your ribbing much neater-looking! Supply list will be emailed to you two weeks before the start of the class.

Umbria, often called the green heart of Italy, offers a unique blend of rustic charm and culinary delights. Renowned for its lentils, farro, pork, truffles, and mushrooms, Umbrian cuisine is a celebration of simple, yet flavorful ingredients. Lentils, a staple in the region, are often served in hearty soups or stews. Farro, an ancient grain, adds a nutty texture to salads and risotto. Pork, especially wild boar, is a common ingredient in Umbrian dishes, often slowcooked to tenderness.
And of course, the region is famous for its prized truffles and mushrooms, which are celebrated for their earthy aroma and flavor.

This first session examines the pivotal changes in American foreign policy during the Truman and Eisenhower presidencies. Truman faced unprecedented challenges: Creation of the UN, Nazi surrender, division of Europe at the Potsdam Conference, use of the A-bomb at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japanese surrender, starvation in Europe, post-war Soviet challenges, independence of Israel, and demands for decolonization. Eisenhower ended the Korean War and confronted the USSR in the Cold War while Communism challenged U.S. power in China, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa. Students will examine how the effects of all these events carry forward to today’s wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, and in subsequent sessions, the U.S. wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In this second session, we will delve into the complexities of the Cold War, exploring the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the evolving confrontations among the United States, the Soviet Union and China. U.S. policy makers experimented with “soft power” through initiatives such as the Alliance for Progress and the Peace Corps while grappling with the effects when the Middle East exploded into the Six-Day War. The superpower’s confrontation accelerated as they pursued dominance in nuclear weapons and in the space race.

This session delves into the tumultuous era of American foreign policy under Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter. We will examine the winding down of the Vietnam War and the subsequent normalization of relations with China. We will also explore the concept of détente and its impact on the Cold War. With the Watergate scandal, the limits of Presidential power were established, for a time. Presidents Ford and Carter both dealt with the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the first steps toward peace in the Middle East, and the early efforts at nuclear arms control. We will examine Carter’s emphasis on human rights and his attempts to improve relations with the Soviet Union through arms control treaties, only to see his work upended by the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

This session provides an in-depth exploration of the foreign policy strategies employed by President Ronald Reagan during his time in office. We will examine Reagan’s assertive approach, which was marked by a significant increase in military spending and a confrontational stance towards the Soviet Union. His administration believed in the necessity of projecting American strength to deter Soviet expansionism, leading to heightened tensions during the early years of his presidency. However, a notable shift occurred in his second term when Reagan and the USSR’s new leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, began to explore diplomatic avenues for cooperation. This evolving relationship ultimately played a pivotal role in reducing Cold War hostilities and contributed to the eventual end of the Cold War, reshaping international relations in the late 20th century.
