SES: Seasonal Environmental Science Thinktank (Grades 3-6)

How do the seasons of Northern Michigan affect our biggest environmental problems? How can we create solutions? You will spend a week “diving” into the waters of our area during each season. Will you be the scientist to design a system to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes? Maybe your filtration system will remove the microplastics in the water. Do you have great ideas about slowing sediment runoff and algae blooms? What is the safest way to perform maintenance on the pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac? Grab your inventor cap and help create solutions to these environmental concerns. Perhaps you will discover the answer!

Create abstract artworks using the wonderful shapes found in nature. Every day after a short walk you will use different materials and create artworks inspired by the great outdoors. Endless Shades of Blue! Drawing and Painting Scenes of Lake Michigan (Grades 3-6) Have you noticed how the color of Lake Michigan changes depending on the sun? Learn how to use different mediums and mix colors to create the varied hues that color the landscapes, sunsets and sailboats of Lake Michigan. Become a safe and confident boater with this fundamental U.S. Power Squadron course. Learn boat terminology, safe watercraft operation, rules and regulations, boat navigation, and communication. We’ll discuss how to deal with a boat in adverse conditions and how to operate a boat trailer and a personal watercraft (PWC). You will also learn how to tie knots that are essential to boating. Cost includes the textbook. You must attend each day and take an exam to earn the U.S. Power Squadron course completion certificate and card. Don’t wait until you grow up to become a real writer! Learn how to write stories that readers cannot put down. See which magazines publish writing by young people and how to successfully submit your work. As a group, we will make our own magazine featuring the stories written in class—so you will get the chance to see your story IN PRINT! College for Kids Learning Formats NMC prioritizes your safety and requires everyone to follow safety guidelines outlined at nmc.edu/keep-safe. Before coming on campus, please view nmc.edu/safety-protocols. Face to Face courses (pgs. 4-17) These classes occur face to face in a classroom on campus and most class sizes are limited to 10 or less. Students (and adults entering buildings) are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. Livestream courses (pgs. 18-25) These classes meet during a regularly scheduled time via a web conferencing tool like Zoom. A link to your class is emailed the Friday before class begins.

Would you like to create an innovative aircraft that can outperform even the most technologically advanced prototypes? Join us on a STEM exploration of all aspects of flight. We’ll create artistic interpretations of new specifics of birds and insects, construct prototypes of gliders, conduct experiments involving precious cargo safely and much more! Kids • Face to Face Simple Machines: Imagineering Your World (Grades 3-6) Are simple machines really that simple? Come along as we investigate how 6 wondrous inventions improve our lives! Jump into a world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Imagine driving a car without axles or not being able to turn your head from side to side. We will dissect chicken wings, create a hovercraft, cultivate a mini-garden, and test our physical strength with a weightlifting experiment! All Aboard the Hogwarts Express (Grades 4-6) Don’t be late! Once you cross platform 9¾, you will be transported to the Hogwarts School for wizardry. Upon arrival, you will be sorted into houses and whisked away to a week of fun—Harry Potter style. Use your wand to mix potions, play wizard games and practice Quidditch. All week, you will earn points in hopes of winning the house cup. End the week on a sweet note with treats from Honeydukes and butter beer you make yourself. Pet Lovers (Grades 3-6) How can you tell if your pet dog, cat, bird or reptile is happy or sad? What do they like and dislike? Join a former zookeeper and current animal trainer to explore the biology of many different kinds of animals and all their peculiar behaviors and adaptations. Through games, you will explore the unique ways that pets see, hear, smell and touch. Research fascinating (and weird!) facts about these friendly pals. Expect some four-legged visitors! Great Tween/Teen Writers’ Machine (Grades 5-8) Expand your mind and discover “limitless writing”. Starting with unique prompts each day, you’ll create new worlds, tell the stories of original characters and get some of your existing ideas down on paper. Get more comfortable as a writer while you learn different strategies for successful story development. There will be plenty of opportunities to share your writing with others who love to write as much as you. Bring a notebook and pencil/pen and get ready to write! In this course you will learn all about how to create your very own incredible food package! You will create a fun food box, a zany character or logo, and a name for your food along with the imaginary ingredients. Add a fun toy or a cool game to include on the back of your box for kids to play while they enjoy your food!

Kids • Face to Face Third Grade Academy with College for Kids Third Grade Academy courses are taught and designed by TCAPS teacher, Jackie Stremlow-Hansen, and aligned with learning benchmarks for students entering third grade in fall 2021. These full-day classes model a school day, but are organized around fun themes and full of hands-on activities blended with academic content. Students practice learning concepts including skip counting (to prepare for multiplication); review addition, subtraction and science concepts; and practice writing connections and personal narratives. They work collaboratively to complete tasks and activities. Dress for a mess as this learning will be fun, messy and experiential. There is a supervised lunch break at noon and regular outside breaks.

Third Grade Academy: Learning and Creating Outside (Grade 3) Spend a week working on projects to show off outside at your home! Projects include building your own birdhouse, fairy house/gnome home, bug village and more. We will infuse fun outdoor themed math, science and language arts learning activities to prepare for 3rd grade but don’t worry, this week will not feel like anything other than a fun week of summer with play, art and exploration! Wear clothes that can get messy and closed toe shoes as we will be exploring outdoors as much as possible. Third Grade Academy: Third Grade Academy: Animal Research Lab (Grade 3) Learning in Color Did you know that sea otters hold (Grade 3) hands while sleeping so they don’t float apart? Did you know that over 60% of living creatures live in the rainforest but that rainforests only make up 6% of the Earth’s land surface? We will explore the rainforest, desert, ocean, polar and wetland animal habitats to learn about the unique animals that call these regions home. Fun animal-themed math, science and language arts learning activities will be infused to prepare for 3rd grade - but don’t worry, this week will not feel like anything other than a fun week of summer with play, art and exploration! You will create animal inspired projects, taste regional foods and learn more fun facts about these amazing animals! Kids • Face to Face STEM Camp for Grades 3-6 Summer is here, and it’s time to explore the chemical and physical aspects of our natural world! Join STEM educator Janine Winkler for week-long adventures in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Engineering and more! In week 1, learn about rocks and minerals, build a glacier, and take a rock recess to find your own specimens to investigate with your own tools. Week 2 focuses on the magic of science all around us, and week 3 is all about science sleuthing to solve a mystery and imagining new inventions that can change the world. Each week is guided by a new STEM curriculum filled with hands-on activities; register for each week separately. Join us for one, two, or all three weeks! Wear closed toe shoes. Camp Hawk Owl (Grades 3-6)

Explore the fabulous feel of clay while making useful and unique objects. Use pinch, slab, and coil methods to create original items and glaze them. Make a clay relief sculpture that is also a bowl, an animal that whistles or rattles, or a vase with a face! Items are fired at the end of the first week and ready for glazing the following Tuesday. You will be notified when the finished pieces are ready to pick up. Dress for an artsy mess. This class meets Mon.-Fri. July 12-16 plus the following Tues., July 20, for glazing.

Camp is a great time to explore new hobbies and learn new games! Are you curious about the tiny worlds we share with other living things in the outdoors? Have you ever wanted to learn the strategy of chess? How about becoming a magician or a master artist? In week 1, learn about bugs and their habitats in the morning and learn the game of chess in the afternoon! Week 2 focuses on magic and art! Learn to perform magic tricks in the morning and develop your skills as an artist in the afternoon. Explore the fascinating world of critters that fly and crawl. Go on daily hunts to locate, observe, count, and collect exciting critters like butterflies, dragonflies, ants, spiders and worms. You’ll learn to catch them with nets to add to your custom-made habitat. Then, after your lunch break you will join the world of Rooks, Knights, Bishops, Pawns, Kings and Queens. Stretch your skills with strategies and tactics for opening, capturing and winning—checkmate! Chess is perfect for those who are drawn to learning something new, enjoy pondering and sitting for periods of time, and appreciate focusing on the game at hand. Chess sets are provided for inclass use, but feel free to bring your own. You’ll be outside most mornings (weather permitting), so wear shoes and clothes that can get dirty.

In the afternoon you will expand your artistic talents by mimicking the styles of the most celebrated and talented artists: Seurat, Chagall, O’Keefe and others. LEGO® Camp: Architects & Producers (Grades 3-6)

GRASP Reading and Math At-Home Program (Grades K-8) Help your child (grades K–8) stay on top of language arts and/or math skills this summer with GRASP—guided at-home mail-in programs that have shown great success in helping children retain critical skills. Whether you are home for the summer or on the road, this flexible program goes with you in nine fun, easy-to-use lessons. Open to students in all school districts, the program was developed to align with local, state and national standards common to most schools. Students complete one lesson a week and mail their work to the teacher consultants who review, score and return assignments. A virtual Start-Up Session via zoom at 6 p.m. on June 8 kicks off the program (students welcome), to meet the teachers and learn how to help students make this a successful experience. The link to the Start-Up Session is sent the day before the meeting, which is recorded so you may watch it later if you prefer. Take your LEGO® skills to the next level and Join Christina Collins for a week-long exploration into the movie set building, planning, creating and making of LEGO® animation. In the morning, you’ll work on the architecture of your movie set. Learn to build structures from blueprints and building plans while maintaining scale. Choose and work on your own scale model of an actual local building. In the afternoons, hone your skills using the Stop Motion Studio (free or Pro edition $4.99). Gain basic knowledge of hand stitching, cutting and figuring a pattern, inserting a zipper or button, plus how to repair or personalize your own garments! Learn the groutless Italian method of mosaic tile art. Leelanau artist Adam Phillip Begley trained in Italy and teaches workshops throughout the area for artists of all ages! This class teaches the specific method of placing ceramic tiles close together to create an image. Take home your image after this 4-day class. Bring basic safety goggles. Material art started with mosaics in the ancient world. Join Leelanau artist Adam Phillip Begley and get an introduction to creating your own mosaic fish or bird design. Into the Wilderness (Face to Face) Join park expert, Kerry Kelly, to explore first-hand what the ‘wilderness’ designation means for the 71,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SBDNL) that have been set aside as wilderness by the US Congress. Day one is a 2-hour discussion in the classroom; day two is a guided tour, including morning and afternoon hikes with different habitats and natural features. The hikes can be challenging but will be selected based on the capabilities and interest of the students. Expect each hike to be 2.5 hours of hiking and exploring. Wear hiking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water, a snack and your lunch for a picnic at a park location. DIY Microgreens Kit & Class (Livestream) If you buy a bag of microgreens you eat healthy for a day. If you learn how to grow them, you can eat healthy for a lifetime! Discover how to grow microgreens, how nutritious they are compared to other vegetables, and how to use them in recipes and with every meal! Did you know, in some forests, the fungi in the soil weigh more than the trees? Come investigate the relationships between the plants of the forest and soils that support them. Gain experience sampling soils and identifying plants. We will walk, crawl, dig and learn our way across a variety of plant communities, ending in one of the oldest patches of forest in Grand Traverse County. This course qualifies toward the Naturalist Certificate. Meets at Pelizzari Natural Area (6852 Center Rd. on Old Mission Peninsula, just north of the Unitarian Church).

Orchids are fascinating, beautiful, and rare plants – and Northern Michigan has some of the best. Join James Dake of Grass River Natural Area as we learn about these important environmental indicators in an exclusive off-trail expedition to see rare orchids and other amazing plants that grow with them, like carnivorous pitcher plants and sundews, in some of the lesser known areas of Grass River. Limited space. Must be able to walk on some uneven and very wet terrain for the hike. Wearing muck boots is recommended. This field class will walk you through a variety of wetland communities as we learn some of the most common sedges you are likely to encounter in Northern Michigan. By the end of the class you will walk away with an identification guide and a new-found appreciation for these unique plants. Marine Navigation (Face to Face)

An America’s Boating Club course, Marine Navigation is the first in a sequence of four courses in navigation. This course covers the basics of coastal and inland navigation, focusing on navigation as done on recreational boats today. GPS is used as the primary navigation tool while traditional techniques, such as chart plotting and dead reckoning, are covered to provide a boater with additional skills, especially needed if the GPS fails. Rigid Heddle Weaving (Face to Face) Are you curious about handweaving? Rigid Heddle looms are easy to use, portable and less expensive than a multi-harness loom. With some experience and an experimental attitude, these looms can also do some very complicated weaving tricks. Become familiar with weaving vocabulary, finishing techniques, and make a plain weave scarf. Additionally, you will learn how to design a second project and warp your loom for a second time. Open to beginners and experienced rigid heddle weavers. Returning students will have the opportunity to work on their own projects and ideas. A supply list will be mailed before class. You will need your own rigid heddle loom. Beginning Tapestry (Face to Face) Tapestry is among the oldest forms of fine arts. Originally for cathedrals and castles, they were used to insulate big stone halls, illustrating battles, parables and metaphors. While the techniques have not changed for centuries, the imagery has. Today’s smaller, portable, personal size looms make it easier for more people to enjoy this art form. Learn how to warp a tapestry loom and explore different ways to create shapes using slits, interlocks and other types of joins. Then learn finishing and mounting techniques. Students who have woven tapestry before may explore advanced techniques. Bring a tapestry loom with a ten-inch wide weaving width (minimum), a notebook/sketch pad, drawing utensils, scissors, and a kitchen fork (used to pack in wefts). Printmaking II expands on processes and concepts explored in Printmaking I with the emphasis on more complex techniques including lithography, reduction relief prints, and multi-color intaglio prints. You will refine your technical skills and conceptions begun in Printmaking I. You will explore contemporary printing techniques and issues. We are pleased to offer you access to the NMC Fine Arts Building ceramics studio! This “class” is for the experienced potter that would like to use our wheels, kilns and facilities. There will be a studio assistant present who can offer limited assistance, but there will be no formal assignments or instruction. Use of the facilities includes access to studio clay (earthenware and stoneware) and basic glazes as well as kiln firings. Artists must supply their own porcelain and specialty glazes if desired. Zoom Made Easy (Livestream)

Since the pandemic, Zoom has become the “go-to” app for bringing people together for online meetings, conferences, instruction and other virtual public and private gatherings. All the steps required to register, schedule, invite, host and record Zoom meetings will be explored. Learn about gallery vs. speaker view, screen sharing, showing videos, setting up break-out rooms, conducting polls, blocking ‘Zoom bombers’ and other helpful features.
