COLLEGE FOR KIDS

On The Cover

Marcy Ford has enjoyed many Extended Education classes over the years, including favorites Mah Jongg Madness (p44), Northern Michigan Glacial Landforms (p49), and Winter Weather.

ADULT ENRICHMENT + DEVELOPMENT

Her grandson, Ben, is a new learner. He completed his first two College for Kids classes last summer. A special memory of his was “going to college with ‘Munga,’” then sharing what they each learned at the end of the day.

They are both thrilled to return to campus this summer to see what else they can learn!

Learning is truly a lifelong adventure. We are proud to offer classes for all ages on any topic you can imagine. Find a class for yourself at nmc.edu/ees.

Letter fro M the Director

Love the life you live.

Dear Learners,

What do you know by heart, and how do you grow this knowledge? From wine tasting in Italy to mastering your sewing machine - the joys of learning are heartfelt. Join us to experience, express, and engage with our community and the world in which we live - so that you may “know by heart” the wonders of this world and this stunning place we call home.

Foster the love of learning for a child through College for Kids (featuring 57 new classes this summer.) Grow their love of the outdoors through classes like Power Island Adventure (p28). Provide them with knowledge and skills that today are almost forgotten in classes such as Kid’s Quilt Camp (p24) and Beginning Fly Fishing (p27). By the end of this summer, what will they know by heart?

Grow your love of culture and cooking through Masterclasses like Refreshing Summer Desserts, Pizza & Foccacia, and Japanese Cuisine (p35). Classes like Herbaria: Plant Pressing and Botany Tour: Treat Farm (p51) are sure to inspire any aspiring naturalist. Or, open your heart through art and try something new, like Plein Air Painting for Beginners (p32) The heart of any organization can be measured through its people and their passion. Workforce & Professional Development classes range from customized team retreats (p39) to options for upskilling quickly and earning a certificate online over the summer (p48).

Crafty, reptile-loving Ophelia is a College for Kids all star. After she took her first class, Geo Kids, in 2019, she has returned every summer since.

Ophelia has participated in a range of classes, from Drawing and Painting to Simple Machines. Of them all, her favorite was Clay Works for Kids. “[I loved] Clay Works because I’m really good at working with clay and you got a lot of freedom to make what you wanted,” she shares. “Making all the clay pieces and learning to glaze them was a lot of fun. I made a whole lot of dragons.”

Unicorns, Rainbows, and Mermaids!

Ophelia gives it her stamp of approval. “I would strongly encourage it; it’s a fun way to spend your summer instead of being cooped up playing video games,” she says, “and you make a lot of friends!”

Her best advice is for parents to sign up quickly before classes fill up. (And she’s right!) Ophelia is excited to come back again this summer and make more new friends.

From Warhol to Lichtenstein, printmaking has made a lasting impact in the art world. I have found that printmaking is a fascinating experience for students. Though it is still a two-dimensional medium, printmaking requires a unique process for a finished piece. Instead of the direct “paintbrush-on-canvas” or “pencil-on-paper” approach, students will learn how inks must first be applied to a plate or stamp and then transferred onto paper to achieve a variety of effects. Students will learn the process and explore the subtle nuances from one print to the next in this class. Projects will range from creating monoprints with non-traditional plates, relief printing, and designing an original stamp. Offered in partnership with Arts for All. Special needs welcome.

Side Flow Yoga for All Levels

Connecting yoga poses in a flowing sequence is called vinyasa. Learning the basics of foundation in our Beginning or Beginning & Beyond classes is best before doing a flowing type of yoga, which requires good health and strength. Side flows compliment sun flows with the majority of poses moving laterally, thus minimizing upper body weight bearing positions. Side flows are great for strengthening legs, opening hips and shoulders, and increasing stability and stamina.

MEeT NEW INSTrUCtOR MATTHEW ROSS

Matthew Ross began gardening at age 3, growing chives at his late grandmother’s house in Detroit. When he returned home and began grazing the front lawn, he told his parents, “at Grandma’s house we eat the plants.” And so began his lifelong learning adventure, beginning with the difference between chives and turfgrass. Having worked in horticulture and education at various institutions, Matthew is currently the Executive Director at The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park. His students have ranged in age from 5 to 85, and he has enjoyed watching each of them apply their knowledge to their own homes, gardens, and communities. Matthew encourages gardeners new and old to be unafraid of having to grow again. “Whether it is growing a plant that you may have not been successful with in the past or starting your first garden in decades. Even professionals have amassed hundreds of “plant fails,” which have provided compost that fed others,” he shares. “It’s a beautiful cycle and only ends if you fail to try and grow again.”

We are thrilled to add Matthew’s knowledge and passion for the natural world to our offering of summer gardening courses:

"Mr. Stanton created a course that made it accessible for those in the very early stages of knowing how to use the iPad as well as those farther along. His handouts really made the difference. I was able to add notes quickly, [then] easily recall what I could do to set up a hot spot, move my widgets, etc. Thank you, Steve!

Do you ever wonder why you act the way you do? Do you have trouble understanding why others don’t seem to view the world through the same lenses as you? More people today are finding answers in the study of the Enneagram (Map of Nine), a system which presents 9 personality types, 3 centers of intelligence, 3 instincts, 9 passions, 9 fixations, subtypes, tritypes, and much more. The Enneagram grows out of basic psychology and spirituality and has proved to be a valuable tool in personal and group therapy, relationship building, police work, politics, business, and many other areas. This introductory course will help you identify your own personality type and introduce the basic concepts and resources that will enable you to engage with this fascinating system of personal development.
