annual report
2 012
TIMOTHY
Timothy J. Nelson President
Northwestern Michigan College is committed to providing our learners and communities with the skills, experiences, and values needed to create economic and social wealth in their lifetimes. This Foundation Annual Report is a valuable opportunity for us to share some of the great work being done by our students, our faculty, and our staff toward that end. Additionally, this report affords us another chance to thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, to make Northwestern Michigan College the longest-running community college success story in the state.
Sixty years ago, a group of people just like you recognized the great promise and potential of bringing a community college to Traverse City. NMC was the first community college established in Michigan. All these decades later, the spirit of our community and the pride in our college has not waned. We have benefited greatly from an active and energized group of students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and friends in helping us grow into the world-class institution that we are today. NMC has always fostered a spirit of wanting to see what’s next. We have programs today that few could have envisioned twenty years ago, and it is exciting to think about where we are headed. Spend a few minutes with this annual report. You’ll learn about an aviation student from India who just a few months ago had never seen the inside of a plane, and who is now piloting them. You’ll read about retired nursing faculty Hettie Molvang, our most recently inducted NMC Fellow and how she continues to give back to the college and the community. You’ll also meet Terry Malone, an NMC Fellow and one of the newest members of NMC’s Biederman Society. Finally, you’ll see the stories of our three most recently honored outstanding alumni. These community leaders boast varied and accomplished careers and public service, and each credits their success to the time they spent at NMC. Thank you for the opportunity to share these stories, and thank you for all you continue to do to support Northwestern Michigan College.
REBECCA
Rebecca M. Teahen, CFRE
Executive Director of Resource Development & NMC Foundation
At the opening conference for fall semester, President Tim Nelson took the opportunity to rally faculty and staff members in attendance around this priority: student success. It makes sense. If we don’t achieve that goal, to nurture our students and help them achieve success in their pursuit of higher education, we’re not doing our jobs. Many of our students face barriers that are seemingly out of our control ranging from financial challenges to learning disabilities and everything in between. Thankfully, your support is helping our students overcome many of these obstacles. Founded in 1981, the NMC Foundation was established to provide a vehicle by which generous donors could help support our students and our college.
Thanks to you, we awarded 552 scholarships totaling $645,428 in fiscal year 2012 – helping to ease some of that financial burden. Thanks to you, we awarded “innovation grants” to faculty and students working to bring new, innovative approaches to learning at NMC. Recent awards included funding for PowerPath Learning Systems - which helps students overcome learning challenges. Thanks to you, we’re expanding our reach beyond traditional borders to offer our students an opportunity to gain global perspectives – often without leaving home. Through the Global Opportunities Fund, NMC students are exposed to diverse cultures through world-class performances and exhibitions at the Dennos Museum Center, a Freshwater Studies internship opportunity in Costa Rica, or engineering courses in Russia. These are just a few examples of how we’re transforming NMC into an international classroom. This Annual Report has been created as a way to say thank you. Every day, your gifts are impacting our students, our college, and our community in a positive way. Together, I am confident that we will meet President Nelson’s challenge to support our students’ success, and change all our lives for the better.

Circle of Excellence Award Winner The NMC Foundation was recently selected as a Circle of Excellence Award winner for Overall Performance by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This award honors superior fundraising programs across the country.
**
Northwestern Michigan College was selected to receive an Overall Performance Award based on the judges’ analysis of three-years of fundraising data that NMC submitted to the Council for Aid to Education’s annual Voluntary Support of Education Survey (VSE). CASE’s Circle of Excellence program honors exemplary advancement programs and activities. CASE President, John Lippincott said this in a letter to NMC President Timothy J. Nelson: “Your institution has not only demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism and best practice in its fundraising efforts, it has contributed to the betterment of educational advancement worldwide.”
NMC Aviation Program Goes Global
“It’s expensive, and at the same time, there are lots of students,” Kishan said of flight training in his home country. Classes in India could contain between 60 and 70 students, compared to the 30 to 40 at NMC. Aviation, along with freshwater studies and engineering, is on the leading edge of NMC’s effort to globalize programs and the student experience. Last year, ten NMC students took an aviation course in the UK.
In May, Om Kishan Jakka of Hyderabad, India, boarded his first flight ever, to enroll in NMC’s aviation program. Less than two months later, the 19-year-old was sitting in a cockpit himself. So was Aneesh Chegudi John, 20, also of Hyderabad. And Tayo Onibokun of Nigeria. The trio are among the first of what’s expected to be an influx of international aviation students in the future, as NMC parlays its ability to offer pilot training in smaller classes, on newer aircraft, and more affordably than overseas schools. “These are not provided in India,” Aneesh said of the “glass cockpit” planes featuring digital instrument displays that comprise most of NMC’s training fleet.
“ No one responded like NMC,” said Kishan.
“It’s not just about bringing international students here,” said Steve Ursell, head of international aviation. Rather, it’s reciprocity across the Atlantic – and beyond – which benefits both domestic and international students as they prepare for a global job market. “There are more and more jobs which involve going overseas as a pilot,” Ursell said.
Both Aneesh and Kishan have aerospace engineering diplomas from the Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, one of NMC’s five international aviation partner schools. At NMC, they are enrolled in an intensive 16-month program to earn their commercial pilot license and other flight ratings. Both said they considered other American schools, but NMC’s responsiveness as well as its updated fleet of aircraft won them over. “No one responded like NMC,” said Kishan. 4
NMC Aviation
continued
In addition, NMC has five different types of aircraft, including multiengine, a seaplane, and an aerobatic plane. The variety enables students to earn many different pilot ratings.
can help to make dreams come true for many of our students seeking a life-changing international experience like Kishan’s.
“That will be useful for my future,” Kishan said. For Aneesh, NMC was able to provide the ultimate personal touch. Shortly after his arrival, Ursell and aviation director Aaron Cook were scheduled to meet with a UK partner in New York. After learning that Aneesh’s father worked in New York – and that they hadn’t seen each other in eight years—they invited the new student on the trip. “It was a good surprise,” Aneesh said. “I had fun.” His father plans to visit Traverse City in December. The three students share an NMC apartment on main campus and are exploring their new community. Traverse City is a stark contrast to Hyderabad, a city of 10 million. Even at Cherry Festival time, the city seems quiet and peaceful, relatively speaking. The best view of their adopted home is, of course, an aerial one. Kishan said he will always remember his first time in the pilot’s seat: June 3, 2012. “It’s my childhood dream,” he said. “It was wonderful. No words to express.” By supporting NMC’s new Global Opportunities Fund, donors www.nmc.edu/global For more on NMC’s international opportunities.

NMC Fellows The Fellow is Northwestern Michigan College’s highest honor, awarded annually since 1964. Fellows may be nominated because they have demonstrated influential networking on behalf of the College, have demonstrated a pattern of outstanding financial or personal time contributions to NMC, or as a retiree of the College continue to contribute back to their academic or professional fields as volunteers, mentors, or advisors. Exceptional contributions in one or more of these areas may justify nomination. No staff, faculty, or trustee shall be named a Fellow while still employed or in office.
Hettie Molvang
Please join us in congratulating our 2012 recipient, Hettie was a nursing instructor at NMC from 1974 to 1994. As a teacher, Molvang believed she had a broader duty to students than overseeing their academic performance. To that end, she went so far as to make personal loans so struggling students could continue their education. As a birthday gift, her late husband, Eric Molvang, established an endowed scholarship in her name. Established in 1989, more than 40 individuals have been helped by the Eric & Hettie Molvang Endowed Scholarship, awarded to nursing and maritime students. She also received NMC’s Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence award in 1986, only the second female faculty member to be chosen for the distinction. Now a retiree, Molvang has been instrumental in helping NMC remain connected to other retirees.
She has co-chaired the retiree committee within NMC’s Annual Campaign for several years. Her support also includes the Dennos Museum Center, where she retains an active membership, Commitment Scholarships, and the NMC Scholarship Open golf outing. Beyond NMC, Molvang is active in the community. In 2011 she was named Distinguished Senior Citizen of the year by the National Cherry Festival for her advocacy for people, especially veterans, with Parkinson’s disease. She is as a board member and facilitator of the Grand Traverse Area Parkinson’s Support Group and assistant state director for Parkinson’s Action Network, the political voice for all Parkinson’s associations.

Great Lakes Maritime Academy regardless if the vessel is located on the Great Lakes or the oceans. There is a deep sense of community and pride among mariners and GLMA alumni. NMC and GLMA are grateful when this leads a mariner back to campus to establish a legacy gift for the Academy. There are seven Maritime Academies in the United States that are regulated by the Federal Government. The federal Academy located in Kings Point, NY and six state Academies; Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, California, and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA), a division of Northwestern Michigan
College (NMC). Having opened its doors in 1969, GLMA is the youngest of the Academies, and is unique in that it is the only Academy located on freshwater. GLMA is the only academy where a deck graduate can sail as an officer on any size vessel in the United States Merchant Marine immediately after graduation,
“Interlake Steamship Co. is counting on Great Lakes Maritime Academy to provide us with the capable and dynamic Officers that our industry requires.” -Brendan O’Connor
Many graduates have named NMC/GLMA in their estates resulting in lasting gifts to support capital needs and scholarships. Recently, industry partners and alumni of all ages have made charitable gifts toward the purchase of a new deck simulator. The new simulator will allow cadets to train using the most up-to-date technology available to meet the
demands of a rapidly evolving industry, and ensure the GLMA program meets current and future regulatory requirements.

Dennos Museum Center The Dennos Museum Center at NMC is the product of a mutual need recognized by the College and this community in the 1980s. That collaboration of College know how and community support from over 1,000 donors led to the realization of this premier cultural institution for the region and the state. Since opening on July 6, 1991 the Dennos has enriched the region with programming in the visual and performing arts and sciences. Whether art exhibitions from prestigious museums like the Detroit Institute of Arts, the University of Pennsylvania Museum, or unique concerts featuring performers from around the world, the Dennos has changed the cultural landscape of our community. In recent years, visitors have seen a pre-Columbian River of Gold, celebrated the lives of women around the world, and peered into the human body. They have heard and seen remarkable performances
by dancers from India, bluesmen from Louisiana, throat singers from Inner Mongolia, Japanese drummers, and internationally renowned jazz artists. The Dennos depends on the community for support both in dollars and in participation. Each year thousands of visitors attend events at the Dennos – on average 6,000 K-12 students come for exhibition tours and educational concerts and well over 1,000 visits are made by NMC students as part of their classroom instruction or on their own. Thanks to generous charitable support, the Dennos Museum Center is one example of what makes Northwestern Michigan College an exceptional place to learn throughout your lifetime. If you’d like to learn more about ways to create a legacy by making a gift to the Dennos Museum, please contact the NMC Foundation.

Donor Profile A member of the NMC Foundation board, Terry Malone and his family have been dedicated supporters of NMC for more than 15 years, supporting multiple initiatives that have helped shape the college into the multi-faceted institution it is today. Their philanthropic activities have included: • Supporting the University Center capital campaign in 1995 • Members of the Dennos Museum Center since 1997, and Dennos annual campaign supporter • Established the endowed Malone Antrim County Scholarship to provide assistance to single mothers from Antrim County in 1998 • Supporter of International Affairs Forum through Extended Education In 2010, the Malones joined NMC’s Biederman Society by making a planned gift to NMC . In this way, they have created a meaningful legacy for their family, and to provide essential scholarship support for future generations.
Scholarship Funds George Elliot wrote, “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” Charitable gifts to NMC scholarship funds help to make life less difficult for students who are striving for success. The cost of education today has nearly put this dream out of reach for many students. Generous donors like you have established nearly 300 scholarship funds at the NMC Foundation to help our students achieve their dreams. Thank you for your support of these scholarship funds. 50th Anniversary Scholarship Adopt-A-Student Scholarship Adopt-a-Student - Kalkaska County Adopt-a-Student - Leelanau County Adopt-a-Student - Wexford County Nick Adamski Memorial Scholarship Adamson Engineering and Automotive Technology Scholarship AEROS Extended Education Services Scholarship Don Agosa Scholarship John V. Outstanding Alumni
This honorary award was established in 1988 to recognize NMC alumni who are noteworthy for their:
KATHLEEN MCMANUS
TIMOTHY YOUNG
2012 Honorees
McManus earned a nursing degree in 1974 and is now executive vice president and chief operating officer at Munson Medical Center. The Traverse City resident said she considers her nursing education and the patient care she went on to do post-graduation “foundational” to the leadership position she now holds. “There have been so many experiences associated with having that good foundational work,” she said, adding that growing up with four other siblings in a single-income household, simply having NMC accessible was a critical starting point for her career. “Then you could use that as your platform,” she said. As an alumnus, McManus has served on NMC’s nursing advisory board. She and Munson have also actively supported NMC’s advocacy for legislation to allow Michigan community colleges to offer baccalaureate degrees in nursing.
STEVE RAWLINGS
Rawlings, a 1991 aviation alumnus, is a second-generation NMC student. After NMC he pursued his bachelor’s at Ferris State University through the University Center, and then earned a master’s from Michigan State. He now serves as regional manager of corporate and government affairs for DTE Energy. “NMC has just as rigorous and challenging, if not even more challenging classes than either of the universities I’ve attended,” Rawlings said. In his capacity at DTE Rawlings has secured corporate support for NMC’s Water Studies program, the Dennos Museum Center, and scholarships and programs. He is halfway through a twoyear commitment as co-chair of NMC’s Annual Campaign. “I take the community service seriously, and I’m very grateful I have an employer that not only encourages its employees to become engaged but supports its employees to connect with the communities in which we live,” he said.
• Continued donation of time, talent, resources, and enthusiasm on behalf of the college • Significant professional achievements • Exemplary leadership in community and professional activities

Remembering Arthur M. Schmuckal (1921-2012)
Northwestern Michigan College sends deepest sympathy to the families of Arthur Schmuckal, Michael Dennos, and Helen Milliken. Michael H. Dennos (1920-2012)
Helen W. Milliken (1922-2012)
Art and the entire Schmuckal family are tremendous examples of philanthropists. Art became a member of the NMC Foundation Board in 1983 and led by example. He committed generously to all the major initiatives of the college since that time, up to and including the current Annual Campaign.
Mike Dennos was a man of vision and a man who supported the vision of others. That was never more evident than when he said “yes” to Paul Welch, then chair of NMC’s art department, when Welch presented the idea of a gallery for the college.
With her husband, former Gov. William Milliken, Mrs. Milliken was the namesake of Milliken Auditorium at NMC’s Dennos Museum Center, fittingly reflecting her lifelong commitment to the arts.
Mike and his wife, Barb, were named NMC Fellows
She was named an NMC Fellow, the college’s highest honor, in 1990 for her many roles at NMC as a

in 1983. Mike’s support did not stop with the opening of the museum; he continued to support the museum throughout his life. Mike’s giving continued after his passing through a charitable remainder trust, to support the Dennos Museum.
patron, speaker, student, visitor, and caring friend. She enriched the campus with her generous affection and support. Mrs. Milliken was also known for her advocacy in the community for environmental issues and women’s rights.

Annual Campaign Learn. Grow. Give. The NMC Annual Community Campaign for Programs and Scholarships began nearly 30 years ago to raise money for student scholarships. Today, the Annual Campaign consists of many activities which build a base of support to provide funding to offer enhanced programming and scholarship opportunities to students. Gifts to the Annual Campaign make it possible for more graduation gowns to be worn, more degrees to be obtained, and more lives to be changed through the power of achieving higher education. In the last five years, the community has responded overwhelmingly, enabling the college to exceed progressively higher goals in terms of both dollars raised and scholarships awarded. “Students today are faced with real obstacles as they pursue education. Cost shouldn’t be one of them,” said campaign co-chair Sarah Harding. “Giving to the NMC annual campaign isn’t just another donation. It’s an investment in the future of our students, and in the future of our community.” If you’d like to learn more about giving opportunities at NMC, please visit www.nmc.edu/foundation.

Created with gratitude for the generous support that helps NMC and our students thrive. NMC Foundation Annual Report
“Like a lot of students and staff that I’ve met since returning to NMC, everyone has a story, everyone has a challenge to carry through life and mine is not different. What is different is the occasional kindness we receive along the way.”
