MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT What a year! As I look back at the 2018 fiscal year (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018), I see a year of milestones and new beginnings made possible by you and everyone who is part of the NMC community. In this annual report, you will find stories of how your support is making a difference for NMC’s programs, facilities, and scholarships. You and others in the community stepped forward last year to join us in celebrating two important 50th anniversaries—those of the college’s radio station, WNMC, and the aviation program. The Dennos Museum Center was re-opened after a 14,993 square foot expansion. This renovation allows for more collaborative learning opportunities across our campuses. All of these endeavors exemplify the strong relationship between the programs that happen at the college

and the community’s interest in supporting cultural and educational resources.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I am so pleased to share this annual report, because you have made it possible. It is thanks to you that our students are supported with scholarships, our programs are thriving, and our facilities are being reimagined for the next generation of learners. In 1951, friends like you came together to raise funds for NMC. Thanks to those initial gifts, and your continued support, we are celebrating milestone anniversaries of some flagship programs. The aviation program celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017 among supporters and alumni from across the country. Similarly, the college radio station, WNMC, celebrated its 50th year bringing educational and culturally enriching programming to the airwaves. In the next year, we’ll invite alumni and friends of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy to begin the celebration of its 50th anniversary year. Thanks to you, the Dennos Museum Center celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016 and the grand re-opening in 2018. I hope you’ve had a chance to visit! I will look forward to our continued work together to support and celebrate these programs, places, and all they bring to our students and community. Thank you for all you do to make this possible.

DENNOS EXPANSION BENEFITS STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY

Thanks to your support and the gifts of many generous donors, the Dennos Museum Center opened the 14,993 square foot expansion in January 2018. These awe-inspiring new spaces moved from plans to reality with initial major gifts from Diana and Richard Milock and Barbara and Dudley Smith III in 2015. At the Dennos Museum Center, known for world-class programming in the visual and performing arts, you can now enjoy two new permanent collection galleries, a new sculpture gallery, a larger Inuit gallery, additional classroom space, backstage storage space for musical equipment, and a revamped loading dock to Milliken Auditorium. Concurrent with the new expansion of the Dennos, upgrades were made to the exhibits of the Discovery Gallery ensuring that it will be a vibrant part of the Dennos for many more years to come. These expanded spaces enhance the Dennos Museum Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to educate and fulfill its mission to engage, enlighten, and entertain our audiences through the collection of art, and the presentation of exhibitions and programs in the visual arts, sciences, and performing arts. While becoming an even

greater cultural asset for the community, the expansion provides significant opportunities to connect more effectively with the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic programs.

After many months of construction and renovation, the ribbon cutting ceremony provided a joyous occasion to celebrate the new spaces available to you and the generous donors who made them possible.

Inspired by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, in the new Dennos youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll enjoy a greater use of glass along with expansive ceilings throughout the new galleries. These, and all the newly expanded spaces, were dedicated in a special ceremony unveiling named galleries and spaces in June 2018. 7

LEADING THE WAY THROUGH VOLUNTEER SERVICE AND PHILANTHROPY BILL AND SUSIE JANIS ARE CHANGING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION AND ART Bill and Susie (Kildee ’67) Janis have been leaders at NMC for more than 30 years through their volunteer service and generous philanthropic support. This year, they made a significant gift to support the Dennos Museum Center and the Annual Fund. Today, in the museum’s recently expanded galleries, you can stroll through the William G. and Susanne M. Janis Family Foundation Promenade.

Inspired by Susie’s leadership, Bill took on an important role at the college as well. Following the death of his friend and NMC Trustee, Bill Cunningham, Bill Janis was appointed to the vacant seat in 1998 and then went on to serve an additional full term as NMC Trustee. Through his company, Century, Inc., Bill has also been a philanthropic leader, supporting NMC’s Scholarship Open for more than 30 years.

Following her time as a student, Susie was recruited to the newly formed NMC Foundation Board. She remembers the first meeting well, saying, “It was one thing to be on campus as a student, and quite another to be on the Foundation Board with your former professors!” Susie’s leadership skills were noticed by the group immediately, and she became the first woman to chair the Foundation Board.

“Giving to the college is a great, wonderful feeling,” says Bill. “I hope that more people have the opportunity to enjoy the personal meaning of philanthropy. Once you have participated, it is part of you.”

Susie excelled in the role and went on to join the newly formed advisory board of the Dennos Museum Center, creating the membership program from scratch and running it for three years. In honor of her achievements, Susie received the Outstanding Alumni award in 2010.

In recognition of their volunteer leadership roles and generosity, both Bill and Susie have been named Fellows of NMC, the college’s highest honor. “Bill and Susie are true gems,” says NMC President Timothy J. Nelson. “I deeply value the guidance and support they provide the college. They are committed to ensuring the economic and cultural vibrancy of this community.”

Dr. Edward and Sharon Rutkowski Recognized as NMC Fellows and Great Friends to Community In recognition of their longtime support of the Dennos Museum Center, Dr. Edward and Sharon Rutkowski were recognized by the NMC Board of Trustees as the 2018 recipients of the college’s highest honor, the NMC Fellow award. The Rutkowskis were founding donors to the Dennos, naming the Thomas A. Rutkowski Discovery Gallery in 1992 in memory of their late son. As part of the recent expansion of the Dennos, the Rutkowskis joined other generous supporters

like you to support significant upgrades to the Discovery Gallery. “We are pleased to help give children a fun introduction to the Dennos Museum and hope to expand their appreciation of the arts and their community,” Sharon said. For many of you, supporting the college has become ingrained. Similarly, the Rutkowskis have supported NMC since 1984, and have

given consecutively for the last 27 years! They are regarded consistently as “great friends” both to individuals and to organizations throughout our community. As longtime friends, Terry Lobdell shared that the Rutkowskis “work well as a team. Sharon has been very proactive and productive with children and children’s groups. Ed is a great leader and an inspiration to a lot of young people; I’ve really enjoyed our friendship.”

Ed is president and CEO of Quantum Sails, the world’s second-largest sail maker with headquarters in Traverse City. The company has operations internationally, including a high-tech sail manufacturing plant in Malaysia and plant designers and engineers in Spain. Reynolds turned heads and broke into the elite sailing market in 2008 when on the starting line of the MedCup Circuit, his was the only boat without the then-dominant competitor’s sail. His team dominated the series and won the overall championship sailing under Quantum sails. The company has grown and prospered ever since, achieving double-digit growth from 2007 to 2015.

The son of Preston Tanis, NMC’s first administrator, Robert at first floundered in college. With encouragement from faculty he achieved a turnaround in his second year and embarked on a career in the sciences. Career highlights include working at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the National Institutes of Health, and Harvard Medical School, where his 27 years with the administrative team included serving as director of Harvard’s Genetics Department. In 2015, Tanis made the decision to give back to NMC, where he got his start, by establishing the President Emeritus Preston N. Tanis Scholarship which provides scholarships for NMC students studying the sciences.

Trevor is the president and CEO of Traverse City Tourism, a position he began in 2016. Prior to that, he spent a decade at the National Cherry Festival, including five years as Executive Director. During his tenure with the Cherry Festival, he earned wide respect for managing the event in a way that was respectful of local concerns while also effectively serving the tourist population. Trevor was recognized as part of the Traverse City Business News’ 40 under 40, as one the region’s most influential professionals under the age of 40, for eight consecutive years.

“NMC instructors were some of the first people that ever told me, ‘you might be smarter than you think you are.’ These weren’t people preaching at me. They quickly became my peers.”

Robert vividly remembers the input and guidance he received at NMC: “Velma Brand encouraged me to fall in love with biology. Helmut Trepte and Nick Rajkovich, among others, were great teachers. And I achieved much better grades. I can’t give enough credit to the faculty. They helped me so much. They saved me!”

“I received a Presidential Scholarship, and it made a huge difference for me. Now I’m honored to support current NMC students through the Scholarship Open. NMC is a wonderful resource in this community.”

CAMPBELLS’ GIFT HELPS AVIATORS REACH NEW HEIGHTS The 50th anniversary celebration for NMC Aviation was punctuated by a very special gift. Inspired by the heroism of his brother, Kerm Campbell and his late wife, Sallie, shared their commitment of $1 million through their estate plans. This future gift, combined with current giving, has established the Ronald Kent Campbell Fund for Excellence and Innovation in Aviation— making a difference for every student who passes through the hangar’s doors. Ronald Kent Campbell was a great aviator and mentor. He was a true community servant, changing and saving the lives of others through his military service, service as a state representative in Kansas, and as a mentor to youth.

The Campbells’ gift supports scholarships, programs, facilities, and equipment for the program.
