about the university center

Serving students since the fall of 1995, the NMC University Center (UC) has enabled thousands of northern Michigan residents to complete bachelor’s and advanced degrees without leaving the Traverse City area. Through NMC’s four-year university partners, the UC offers more than 50 degree programs in the areas of Business, Education, and Health and Human Services. Headquartered at NMC’s University Center campus on Boardman Lake in Traverse City, the UC provides programming at conveniently scheduled times, most often evenings and weekends, to accommodate working students. The response has been strong: Both class offerings and enrollment have more than doubled over the UC’s 19-year history. In fall 2012, more than 1,500 students were enrolled in nearly 200 classes. UC students are also overwhelmingly satisfied with their experience.

In a student survey, 99 % of respondents said they would recommend UC classes to others.

Students who graduate from the University Center receive their degrees from the four-year university in which they are enrolled. Each partner maintains a staffed office at the NMC UC campus in order to best assist prospective and current students. Current UC partners are: • • • • • • •

getting started What can I study? The University Center partners offer programs in the areas of Business, Health and Human Services, and Education. What degrees are available? Bachelor’s completion degrees, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees, professional certificates, education endorsements and planned programs. How do I apply? The ideal approach for admission to a bachelor’s degree program is to complete the first two years of college courses (and an associate’s degree) from Northwestern Michigan College. You can then apply for admission to the four-year institution of your choice. Applications are available through the UC campus office representatives listed on pages 6-13. Once accepted to a university, you are literally a student at that institution, with the same rights and responsibilities as other students at that college or university. How can I get help? Consult directly with representatives from the university to learn about their programs. Planning ahead will ensure that you complete courses or tests required for admission. How do I register for classes? You can register by mail, telephone, onsite, and online. Call the university representative for details. How do I pay? Tuition and fees are assessed by the individual partner institutions. The UC campus office representatives listed on pages 6-13 are the best source of information. Is financial aid available? Financial aid eligibility and awards are primarily determined by the student’s school of choice. Refer to the UC campus representative directory on pages 6-13 for contact information, or visit www.nmc.edu/uc. Where are classes held? Most classes are held at the NMC University Center Campus on Boardman Lake in Traverse City. Located at 2200 Dendrinos Drive, the UC campus is off Cass Road, north of South Airport Road. How can I find out more? Find out more about the programs and universities you’re interested in by using this catalog or visiting www.nmc.edu/uc. Tours of the University Center are available by calling (231) 995-1777 or stopping by the Welcome Center at the UC campus during regular business hours.

Start Your Journey Once you decide on an academic program and school, you can apply to become a student of that university. The NMC University Center is where you will attend class, where you have access to our open computer lab, where you can study, and where your hard work and dedication will further your education. The NMC UC is your “home base” no matter which university you attend.
